“ I feel hopeless about my school life! I’m not a popular student in our class. I can’t play basketball as well as other boys. And I failed Math exam again yesterday, which made me ....” Tom, a 16-year-old boy of Mr. Brown’s class, lowered his head, sobbing(啜泣) uncontrollably in the Teacher’s Office.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Mr. Brown patted Tom’s shoulder gently and asked the young boy to sit down in front of the desk so that they could sit opposite each other. This was the first time that Tom had turned to Mr. Brown for help because he was so shy and quiet in school. But Mr. Brown had noticed him many times in school’s volunteer work. Looking at the sad young boy, Mr. Brown was silent for a moment. Then, he took a piece of paper and a pen out of his drawer.
“I’d like to invite you to take a surprise test, my boy”, said Mr. Brown, passing the pen to Tom. “ A new Math exam ”, Tom raised his eyes which were still filled with tears, got the pen and replied in confusion, worrying about the coming challenge. “Just take it easy because it’s not about numbers or formulas(方程)”, Mr. Brown comforted him with a big smile. Not knowing what would come in the exam paper, Tom nodded his head and wiped his tears with his sleeves.
Mr. Brown handed Tom the question paper and encouraged him softly, “Now, you can begin and please finish the test within ten minutes.” To Tom’s surprise, there was no questions in the paper, but just a black dot in the center of the page. Mr. Brown thoroughly read through Tom’s puzzled expressions and said, “ I want you to write what you see there.” Confused as he was, Tom began to do what he had been asked to do. Meanwhile, Mr. Brown picked up a novel and started reading it, waiting patiently.

Version 1
Paragraph 1: Tom scratched his head anxiously, having no idea what to write. The blank paper in front of him seemed like a silent challenge, while the black dot stood out prominently, mocking his confusion(非谓语动词做伴随动作) . Hesitated to write out onto the page(adj短语做主语补语) as he described how the black dot overshadowed the clean(状从+宾从), white surface. Lost in his thoughts(非谓语动词做原因状语), he barely noticed the time passing until Mr. Brown softly announced(状从), “Time’s up, Tom.” Looking at his work(非谓语动词做伴随动作), Tom felt a mix of embarrassment and relief, unsure(adj短语做补语)if he had met his teacher’s expectations.(宾从)
Paragraph 2: “What your writing focused on was just the black dot, but you have a whole white paper,” said Mr. Brown, holding the sheet up(非谓语动词做伴随动作). “The black dot represents challenges, mistakes, or failures in life. But don’t forget, Tom, there’s so much more to celebrate in the ‘white paper’—your kindness, your talents, your potential.” His words struck a chord with Tom, making him realize how narrow his perspective had been(非谓语动词做伴随动作+宾从). “Life is never perfect, but we should focus on the positive and not let setbacks define us,” Mr. Brown added with a smile. Inspired by his teacher’s words(非谓语动词做原因状语), Tom felt a surge of confidence. He left the office that day determined to embrace his strengths and work on his weaknesses(adj短语做伴随动作), knowing that life, like the white paper, was full of possibilities(宾从).
