So is English mania good or bad? Is English a tsunami, washing away other languages? Not likely.
English is the world’s second language. Your native language is your life. But with English you can become part of a wider conversation. A global conversation about global problems. Like climate change or poverty, or hunger or disease. The world has other universal languages. Mathematics is the language of science. Music is the language of emotions. And now English is becoming the language of problem solving. Not because America is pushing it. But because the world is pulling it.
So English mania is a turning point. Like the harnessing of electricity in our cities, or the fall of the Berlin Wall, English represents hope for a better future. A future where the world has a common language to solve its common problems
Structure of expressing ideas:
1.______________ 2._______________ 3.___________________

When someone begins speaking about robots taking over the world, most would think that person was talking about a science-fiction movie. Not many would think that such an opinion would be voiced by a world-famous scientist like Stephen Hawking. However, just this past week, Dr. Hawking explained his belief that artificial intelligence (AI) has a very real chance of going beyond human intelligence.
Artificial intelligence is the development of computer programmes with similar abilities to human intelligence, such as voice recognition, speech, or decision-making. In 1956, scientists and students attended a conference at Dartmouth College where they discussed the concept. At this conference, the term “artificial intelligence” was invented. Early AI programs used similar procedures to accomplish tasks such as playing games or solving math problems. Today, almost 60 years later, AI has come a long way. For example, computers are now able to beat humans at chess. According to most computer scientists, this evolution in AI cannot be stopped. Moore’s Law---a well known and highly regarded theory of computer development---predicts that computer speed and memory doubles every ten years. This growth suggests that computer scientists are not slowing down their research any time soon. With this increase in the abilities of AI, many famous scientists predict that AI will overtake(超过) human brain. From there, the question arises: What does this mean for the future of mankind?
According to Dr. Hawking, once the human advancement of technology reaches a certain point, computers will have the ability to evolve(进化) and develop on their own. And if computers are in control of their own evolution, they will certainly evolve faster than humans, who are limited by natural biological evolution. They would eventually have more skills than even the humans that created them. Elon Musk, the CEO of the car company Tesla, strongly advocates that humans watch out for the potential of artificial intelligence. He even went as far as to say that AI could be “potentially more dangerous than imagined”.
But not everyone is so negative with regard to the effect of high developed technology on humans. Some computer scientists believe that AI would benefit us a lot. Charlie Ortiz, at the software company Nuance Communications, says, “Increased AI might be useful for solving many problems that human intelligence cannot. There is no reason to assume that AI will work to harm us even if it does become more complex than human intelligence.”

Module 3 Unit 3 Task Giving a talk about a historical event
苏州大学附属中学 褚天舒 April 15, 2016
本节课的主题是“Giving a talk about a historical event”。既然此节课的最终目的是做演讲,我就把它定位为一节活动课。让学生通过“感受演讲---分析演讲---模仿演讲”来培养学生做演讲的技巧,最后达到能够尝试当众做演讲的目标。
Teaching goals:
learning the skill of planning an outline
learning the skill of describing pictures giving a talk
learning the skill of expressing ideas
Teaching design :
Lead-in(感受演讲---分析演讲成功的要素)
Before class, let students enjoy video clips of famous speeches. (the speeches of Obama , the Queen of UK , the Prime Minister of UK, Jay walker, and Martin Luther King) and ask students what the elements of a good talk are.
Skills building
①planning an outline(教师示范演讲---学生分析演讲的结构)
Teacher gives a talk as an example, and leads students to figure out the outline.
②describing pictures (游戏和小组合作描图---由浅入深培养描图能力)
Teacher advises students to think in the listeners’ shoes, and to satisfy listeners’ interest.
(T: If you are my listeners, what do you want to know about the picture?)
tips on describing a picture (first, mention the subject and then focus on the related background information)
practice:
playing a guessing game (a competition)
describing the historical event ---the attack on Pearl Harbor (group work)
③expressing ideas(模仿演讲---探索如何有力表达观点,同时模仿演讲者的声音和姿态)
T asks students to imitate Jay Walker’s speech (from TED), and explore the way of expressing personal ideas powerfully.
Giving a talk(以人工智能会不会取代人类为话题让学生按照演讲的结构并综合以上技巧进行演讲)
T: Last month, Alphago defeated li in a chess game, and no doubt AI has come into widespread use. Do you think AI will replace mankind and take over the world? (group discussion)
T: Try to give a complete talk about it, including a clear outline, a proper description and your personal idea. Pay attention to your voice and body language. (presentation---peer assessment)
