My legs were starting to ache from standing by my research poster for nearly ten hours. At 15, I was anxiously awaiting the possibility to speak to my biggest role model, J. Michael Bishop, MD. I'd learnt from other students who had previously participated in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) that the Nobel laureate walks around from poster to poster to speak with students during the Public Showcase Day.
J. Michael Bishop, MD, who was the winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, talked about his childhood and how he had hardly been exposed to science. Throughout his college education, he never imagined himself becoming a scientist. He had even been denied entry into countless labs due to a lack of prior experience. He had an ambition to become a scientist, but lacked the guidance to visualize his future career. Over time, he developed relationships with instructors who believed in him. More importantly, he learned how to believe in himself.
I found inspiration in Dr. Bishop's goal of becoming a scientist and his willingness to be open and vulnerable—he often gave talks about his own self-doubt. Dr. Bishop is a role model for anyone who, like me, comes from an unconventional background, inspiring us to persevere and work through self-doubt to pursue a career in science.
When Dr. Bishop was just inches away from the posters nearest to mine, I ran up to my role model and asked him to come to my poster even if I wasn't on his list. He was kind enough to spend at least an hour with me, discussing my research and ultimate goal to pursue a PhD.
Seven years after meeting Dr. Bishop, I had the privilege of pursuing a PhD in cancer biology, and my path continues to mirror his. I am devoting my graduate and scientific career to instructing students from underrepresented backgrounds through teaching, guiding them through their own research projects, and openly sharing my own story, just as Dr. Bishop does.

B. Dr. Bishop's early exposure to science.
C. Dr. Bishop's experience in experiments.
D. Dr. Bishop's hard path to turning scientist.
28.Why did the author consider Dr. Bishop her role model
A. He overcame self-doubt to achieve his goal.
B. He was willing to talk about his vulnerability.
C. He worked hard and had strong self-discipline.
D. He was a success with a conventional background.
29.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The author feels proud of her extraordinary students.

In recent years, as an increasing number of people are allowed to work remotely, video calls have exploded. For remote workers, video conferencing programs like Zoom, Skype and Google Hangouts are absorbing more time in the day. They're used for professional meetings and virtual happy hours, then for catching up with friends and family over dinner or while going for a walk. Jodi Eichler-Levine, a professor at Lehigh University, uses video conferencing to run discussion-heavy courses. As she tells National Geographic, the experience is exhausting, leading to an after-class crash.
And Eichler-Levine isn't alone—people reporting "Zoom fatigue" find themselves mentally exhausted after what can be hours of staring at images of friends and colleagues.
"When we're actually face to face, we don't stare at each other's eyes for that long," Stanford psychologist Jeremy says. "People have their own personal norms about the proper space one should leave between themselves and others," but video calls can push that line depending on how someone chooses to frame their face.
Video calls also remove several nonverbal cues (非语言暗示) that humans rely on for communication. Micro-expressions don't come through on video feeds and sitting at a desk leaves little room for body language. At the same time, you're aware that you're being watched.
"When you're on a video conference, you know everybody's looking at you; you are on stage, so there comes the social pressure and feeling like you need to perform," Clemson University psychologist Marissa Shuffler tells the BBC. "Being behaviorally nerve-wracking and more stressful."
However, this isn't the only way that people are experiencing the change to videoconferencing. John Upton, an editor at Climate Central who recently found out he is autistic (自闭症的), tells National Geographic that the move to video conferencing has reduced the small talk around meetings and the number of people talking at a time. The change has made the "ambiguous tension" of the workplace insignificant, he says.
28.What does "Zoom fatigue" underlined in paragraph 2 mean
A. Mental tiredness caused by video calls.
B. Physical exhaustion from using Zoom.
C. Poor eyesight from too much screen exposure.
D. Serious depression created by little communication.
29.Jeremy thinks the difference between face-to-face communication and video calls is ____.
A. the level of formality
B. the amount of body language
C. the awareness of privacy
D. the duration of staring at each other
30.What is a disadvantage of video calls
A. They make it hard to hear clearly.
B. They cause misunderstandings easily.
C. They limit nonverbal communication.
D. They reduce the communication pace.
31.What is John Upton's attitude to videoconferencing
A. Unconcerned. B. Cautious. C. Critical. D. Favorable.

One of my favorite things about the parenting stage I'm at is the amount of hugs I get to give on a daily basis. My child is quite young and a good long hug still works to calm her down when she's upset or trying to will herself to stay awake at bedtime. But that golden touch isn't something unique to our parent-child relationship. Parents all over the world use a gentle caress (爱抚) to calm our children.
Scientists say that special touch is something all of us mammals use on our children. It's thought to activate the C-tactile fibers under the parts of our skin covered with hair, which results in relief, said neurobiologist Ishmail Abdus-Saboor. As the story explains, it turns out that the fibers, which have sensory terminals that appear to be free nerve endings, are "especially equipped to detect a gentle, stroking caress... and are part of a system activating the warm, calm and peaceful feeling you're published with people who love you."
At the start of the year, Abdus-Saboor when he published a paper in Cell that demonstrated the activation of these neurons in mice. Apparently, touch sparks the dopamine (多巴胺) pathways in their brains, causing them to seek the hug or touch again and again. "These nerves basically have a dedicated, neuronal highway to the brain's reward centers," he explained. "So why would you wire a system like this Well, turning on these neurons is so important for social encounters, relationships, bonding, calming and stress relief."
There is some evidence that the nerves may also activate the release of endorphins (内啡肽) in people's brains. But even neuroscientists who are unsure about an endorphin link agree that you rarely need words to calm a bad-tempered kid: A parental caress may be all that's needed for children to feel cared for and safe. "Being touched is just a basic need, like having dinner when you are hungry," said neuroscientist Helena Wessling. "You need to have this touch in order for you to reach a good, steady state in your body. You need it so you can feel safe enough to go out and explore the world."
32.What do scientists say about the C-tactile fibers
A. They are sensitive to sounds.
B. They are unique to human beings.
C. They can contribute to positive feelings.
D. They can be found throughout our body.
33.Why did Abdus-Saboor conduct the experiment on mice
A. To learn more about their brain structure.
B. To prove the favorable outcomes of touch.
C. To identify similarities between them and humans.
D. To confirm the existence of C-tactile fibers in their bodies.
34.What can be inferred from Helena Wessling's words
A. Touch is not suitable for everyone.
B. Touch is essential for one's well-being.
C. The value of touch is often underestimated.
D. Parents' touch is especially useful for angry kids.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Calming kids without words
B. Children's emotional needs
C. Touch - a secret language
D. Effective parenting tricks

It was an ordinary Saturday morning. The sun was peeking through the clouds, casting a warm glow over the park. Emily was running in the park. She loved running because she believed that after a tough week at work, running could not only help her exercise her body but also free her mind from stress and exhaustion.
There were a lot of people in the park. Children were running around and playing, the elderly were leisurely practicing Tai Chi, and young couples were strolling by the lake. Emily was enjoying the lively and pleasant atmosphere. Her steps were light and rhythmic, and every breath made her feel more comfortable, filling her lungs with the fresh scent of the blooming flowers.
Suddenly, there was some noise not far away. Emily looked in that direction and saw a crowd gathering, looking panicked. She ran over to see what had happened. There was an old woman lying on the ground, her face pale as a sheet and her lips slightly purple and quivering. Beside her, another old woman shouted anxiously, "She's having a heart attack! What should we do Who can help " Everyone around looked troubled. Some were calling an ambulance on their phones, but no one knew how to help the old woman before the ambulance arrived.
Emily's friend Jane is a nurse. The hospital where she works once held public welfare activities for CPR (心肺复苏) training in Emily's community. Emily attended this event only because she was more interested in the free snacks and small gifts provided than the training itself. Never had she imagined there would be a day when she would use this skill.
Calming herself down, Emily offered to have a try.
Finally, the old woman woke up.

三、参考答案
Calming herself down, Emily offered to have a try. Taking a deep breath, she quickly knelt beside the old woman, the basic steps of CPR she had learned in the public welfare activities flashing through her mind. Without hesitation, she placed one hand on the center of the woman's chest and the other on top, pressing firmly and steadily. Anxious and worried, the crowd watched in silence. With time ticking with its own pace, Emily continued her press and counted aloud to keep the rhythm, "One, two, three, four..."
Finally, the old woman woke up. Seeing the old woman's eyes fluttering open, Emily took a deep breath and gently wiped the sweat from her brow. Hardly had the old woman come to life than she held Emily's hands tightly, tears of gratitude streaming down her face. Meanwhile, the crowd erupted in cheers, praising Emily for her quick thinking and effective CPR. With a sense of pride and accomplishment washing over her, Emily was determined to learn more first aid skills and help people in need.
