It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror (镜子) and looked at himself.
"Not bad, Stone, not bad," he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn't ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls' heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
"Perfect," he thought. "Good enough for a toothpaste ad."
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off.
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
Why didn't his legs grow with the rest of his body He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family, he was even shorter than his "little" sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from
He certainly didn't get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother's side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle.
Thanks a lot, Grandpa!
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay's short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn't like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.
But Jay couldn't see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.
Jay shook his head. "Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that's me," he said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother's voice.
"Jay! It's breakfast time!"

How many kinds of plants are there in the world Lucy Braun wondered that as a child. She showed great interest in plants at a young age. She often had energetic walks with her family through the nearby woods. Some plants and wildflowers seemed to shout at her with their wildcolours. Others hid behind rocks.
Lucy looked at the shapes of leaves as she walked in the woods. She kept a record of what she saw. She also learnt to draw what she saw. Then she could compare all kinds of plants. Later, Lucy grew more and more interested in botany, the study of plants.
Branching Out
At university, Lucy took classes in geology, or the study of rocks and minerals. Her work with geologists changed how she looked at the natural world. She continued her studies in botany as well. Lucy also took classes in ecology (生态学). Lucy believed that plant life in some areas was able to move to other places over time.
In Full Bloom
In 1917, Lucy began to teach botany at a university. She lived in a house near the woods. Lucy collected plants from all around the country. She took many photos of them, too. Colour photography was still new then. Because of that, people enjoyed her lessons and photos a lot.
The ▲ of Labour (劳动)
Later in her life, Lucy wrote many field guides. In 1950, she published her most important guide. It describes the plants in the forests across the country. Ecologists still use it to study changes in the forests over time.
Today, Lucy has a few plants named after her. One of them is Lucy Braun's snakeroot, which is now in danger. Lucy's work in the protection of nature may help prevent its disappearance.

In the bright moonlight, Jack is walking home. Suddenly, he finds a hawk (鹰) lying beside a box. Very curious, he begins to check it.
The hawk seems to be in pain. One of its wings looks broken, touching the ground. Its eyes look scared. So Jack takes off his T-shirt and wraps (包裹) it carefully round the hawk. Then he carries it home.
"I can't take him into the house," he thinks. "My mum doesn't like animals in the house!"
Thinking for a while, Jack decides to hide the hawk in the garden shed (棚子). He secretly puts the hawk down on the floor with his T-shirt. Looking at the hawk, he says, "It's your home now. Call you Falco, OK "
After that, he goes back to his room. Unluckily, his parents are waiting for him. Finding his T-shirt missing, they get quite angry and don't allow him to go out within a week. Jack goes to his room without any words, but he can't fall asleep because he is worrying about Falco.
In the early morning, Jack takes some bread to feed Falco and goes back to his room secretly. After breakfast, Jack goes to the garden shed, holding a small bowl of water.
In the shed, he finds Falco sitting quietly in a corner, the bread still on the floor. Falco's eyes are open, but not bright now. Jack puts the water in front of Falco. At first, Falco ignores (忽视) it, then he begins to drink. Jack sits quietly, looking at him, imagining Falco flying in the endless blue sky. But now he is trapped on the earth. "How can I help you return to the sky, Falco "
When Jack leaves the shed, his brother Jim is waiting for him outside.
"What's so interesting in the shed "
"Nothing."
"Tell me the truth, Jack. I think you haven't forgotten my broken rocket!"
Finally, Jack has no choice but to tell his brother the truth. Jim becomes very excited.
"Jim, please don't say anything to Mum and Dad. I can repair your rocket."
"My rocket isn't important, Jack. But Falco is!"
Then the brothers discuss how to feed Falco. They decide to get help from their friend Holly because she knows a lot about animals, birds and nature. Later, the brothers go to Holly. Holly advises them to feed some meat to Falco.
Over the next few days, Falco gets much better. He always eats the meat Jack and Jim bring him from the kitchen. Jack even digs up worms in the park for Falco. Falco loves them! His feathers look bright and shiny, too. But he still can't fly.
One morning, Holly comes to see Falco. After watching it for a while, Holly says, "Falco is well enough to fly again!" Hearing this, they happily open the door, and watch Falco step into the sunlight slowly. Falco beats his wings and tries to fly in small circles, then in large ones. Suddenly, he makes a loud cry and flies away. Jack feels a bit sad, but he knows they are right.
One evening, Jack and Jim are sitting in their room. It is a cool and quiet evening. Suddenly, he hears a cry from far away. A familiar (熟悉的) cry. A bird is flying in circles across the sky. It's Falco! Jack watches it fly, happy and wild.

There are 706 billion LEGO bricks (积木)on the earth, 7 LEGO sets are sold in every second, and more than 400 million people have played with Lego bricks. LEGO has already been a successful company in the world. Actually, there are many ups and downs along with its development.
Start from woods
The LEGO company was set up in 1934. The name comes from the Swedish "leg godt", meaning "to play well". Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the founder of LEGO, was a master carpenter (木匠大师), so it's not surprising that the first LEGO toys were made of wood. Theywere simple, such as wooden ducks. In 1942, the factory that made wooden LEGO toys was burned to the ground, which made Ole realize the disadvantages of working with wood.
Success—brick by brick
Soon Ole found out that plastic is a good material to make toys. LEGO started making self-locking bricks in 1949. But it wasn't until 1958, when the locking design was much improved, that sales were rising. Because of its quality and the endless creativity that it lets children have, LEGO achieved a huge success.
Overcome difficulties
In 2000, children began to spend more time playing video games. By 2003, LEGO's sales were down by 30%, and LEGO nearly went broke. The turning point appeared in 2004 when LEGO focused again on its bricks. And it also worked with films and televisions, like Star Wars. The Internet was used to build a LEGO group where fans show their love to LEGO collections. In 2015, it again became a name known by the world.

It might sound like magic, but in February, a paralyzed(瘫痪的) patient was able to drink water on his own by controlling a special glove with his brain. The glove then acted as his hand. This was a success in brain-machine interface (BMI, 脑机接口) technology made by a team of Chinese scientists and doctors.
BMI refers to creating a connection between the human brain and external devices (外部设备), making communication between the brain and computers. For paralyzed people, BMI can allow them to move and do simple things by themselves.
On Oct 24, 2023, the team put a BMI chip (芯片) in the patient's head. The chip can receive neural signals (神经信号) from the brain.
After three months of home recovery (康复) training, the patient can now use his brain signals to control a special glove powered by air pressure. This helps him do things like drinking water independently.
BMI technology usually means putting chips directly onto the patient's brain. However, this project is minimally invasive (微创的), making sure the patient's brain is not harmed. So it is an important breakthrough. It also uses a wireless power supply(无线电源), so the implanted(植入的) device doesn't need a battery(电池).
Li Yuanning from Shanghai Tech University told CCTV News that BMI is now mainly used in the medical field to improve the lives of people with brain-related problems or speech difficulties.
In China, BMI technology is still in the early stages of research, with no products on the market yet. Some people are worried that tests may influence patients' independence and even who they are. Ethical concerns(伦理问题) related to BMI also need to be addressed. These include whether the patient has a clear understanding of what is going on when they agree to take part in the test.
41.What is China's recent success in BMI
A.A BMI chip was successfully put into a patient's brain.
B.BMI helped a paralyzed patient drink water on his own.
C.A paralyzed patient can move freely with a BMI chip.
D.A paralyzed patient can communicate with computers.
42.What is the external device in the recent experiment
A.A BMI chip. B.A neural signal.
C.The brain. D.An air pressure-powered glove.
43.What is the advantage of the new BMI technology
A.It doesn't need any power.
B.It doesn't harm patients' brains.
C.It understands patients' needs correctly.
D.It helps people improve their speech skills.

The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important role in the development of Chinese culture.
① Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
② However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
③ Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by combining two or more characters together. For example, "休" was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character "囚" was formed with a "man" inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for "up" and "down", which are opposites of each other.
④ Though these kinds of characters indicate meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced.
