Many people are fond of volcanoes, but few are willing to be faced with extremely high temperatures by themselves. However, Katia and Maurice, a French couple, are the exception. Over the last couple of decades, they have followed eruptions and approached dangerous lava (岩浆) and poisonous gases, documenting their discoveries with amazing photography and mind-blowing imagery.
The couple met by chance on a bench at the university of Strasbourg in 1960s, and soon they formed a bond
through the shared fascination for volcanoes. On graduating, they devoted themselves to various pursuits of volcanic observation without any financial support. They hit the road with limited budget and pure love for fire.
The journey has been full of danger and excitement. In order to get the precious first-hand information, they risked their lives to brave the heat and falling rocks, getting closer to the danger than anyone else. Consequently, they have photographed the eruption of many volcanoes up-close and personal, such as the At Umari Volcano and the Cape Columbia Volcano. These incredible set of photographs attracted public officials'. attention, which later helped the couple to acquire government funds to visit hundreds, if not thousands, of volcanoes all over the globe.
In June 1991, along with 40 other people, the couple set out to film the eruption at Mount Unzen in Japan. Unfortunately, Katia and Maurice lost their lives as they were researching potential volcanic events to warn people in the area to evacuate (撤离). Later investigation revealed that Katia's and Maurice's bodies were closest to the volcano crater.
In 2022, their story was adapted into a documentary called Fire of Love by Sara Dosa, an award-winning director. And one of the audience commented, “I was fascinated by the achievement of the couple. This was all done before the arrival of drones (无人机) and remote sensors which are used today to study volcanoes.”
4. What distinguishes the French couple from other volcano lovers
A. They were well-educated volcano experts.
B. They were willing to put themselves at risk.
C. They were skillful at taking pictures of volcanoes.
D. They successfully avoided being hurt by lava and gases.
5. What did the couple do along their volcano journey
A. They attempted to save lives from future volcanic events.
B. They required the financial support from the government.
C. They were closer to At Umari Volcano than anybody else.
D. They recorded the whole journey to make it into a documentary.
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The audience was motivated to study volcanoes.
B. The couple invented drones and remote sensors for research.
C. The couple lived in an era that lacked advanced tech-products.
D. The couple were more capable than drones and remote sensors.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Katia and Maurice
A. Dedicated and cautious. B. Risk-taking and mysterious.
C. Passionate and adventurous. D. Considerate and peace-loving.
C
Last week, the Los Angeles Unified School District became the largest in US to approve (批准) a districtwide cellphone ban. For teachers, this is great news. For many kids, it’s less welcome. Parents, meanwhile, are conflicted, caught between wanting their children to learn without distraction(分心)and worried about the loss of the constant and easy communication to which they’ve grown used.
Smartphones undoubtedly hold back students’ attention to solving for x or close reading a Shakespearean poem. A 2023 study by Common Sense Media revealed that teens check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of notifications lighting up screens and interrupting class lectures, teens now spend 4.8 hours on social media each day. The relationship between screen exposure(使用屏幕)and mental well-being remains unclear, but some studies suggest there is cause for concern.
Yet many parents remain careful of banning phones during the school day. They are afraid that doing so would cut communication between them and their children —not only when they want to organize pickups or drop-offs but also in the event of an emergency.
Schools have managed to function without smartphones for centuries. For concerned parents, equipping their children with traditional cellphones, these days dubbed “dumbphones,” might be the best option; schools might consider whether selective (选择性的) phone bans that permit such devices could work. Or parents could get even more old-fashioned and simply call their school’s office when necessary.
The next question for schools is how to ban cellphones. A popular option is requiring the use of magnetic (有磁性的) bags that lock in the morning and unlock when the final bell rings, or in the event of an emergency.
When smartphone bans are done right, they can make a big difference. At Bethlehem Central High School near Albany, N.Y., for example, academic progress has improved since applying a ban last fall. Students are less distracted and more tuned into learning. Parents have even said they’re surprised at the success of the newly phone-free school.
8. What does the underlined word “conflicted” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Not knowing what to do. B. Very happy with sth.
C. Not good at some things. D. Worried about sth.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. How to learn Shakespeare’s plays and poems in school.
B. Screen exposure does make people mentally unhealthy.
C. Heavy usage of smartphones seriously affect students.
D. Students in USA love phones more than ones in China.
10. What schools can do for concerned parents
A. Ban the parents’ own smartphones.
B. Selectively ban some students’ phones.
C. Allow students carry dumbphones.
D Encourage them to shout outside window.
11. Why is Bethlehem Central High School mentioned in the last paragraph
A. Students there are allowed to use smartphones.
B. To show smartphone bans are beneficial.
C. Parents there are less distracted and surprised.
D. Just to praise the school’s achievements.
D
Businesses are finding more uses for virtual reality (VR) as the technology develops.
VR is no longer only for gaming or enjoyment. An American company called Blue Goji is using VR to improve one’s health by making exercise more fun.
Blue Goji has offices in Austin, the capital of Texas. The company showed its workout machine called the Infinity treadmill (跑步机) at the South by Southwest festival. A person using the treadmill wears a virtual reality headset when exercising. Before starting, the user is connected to a belt to prevent falls. Then, the user plays a VR game while running on the machine. The game can transport the user into the virtual world, where he or she can be
racing against virtual people.
The cost of the hardware and the computer software program is $12,000. That is a lot of money for most people. But Kyra Constam of Blue Goji says the virtual reality treadmill is ideal for 2 places where people go to exercise, like high-end gyms or recreation centers.
Recently, Leonardo Mattiazzi tested the Infinity treadmill. Mattiazzi said he had a strong feeling to actually get running and do something that pushed his limits. He said the experience was more interesting than running inside the gym without actually going anywhere.
Constam noted that a lot of VR experiences cause motion sickness (晕动病) because people are in motion during the game, but not moving in real life. But when the user is moving on the treadmill and in the game, the chances of motion sickness are reduced. She said there is generally a learning curve for VR. The first time users feel lost, but the more you do it, the more you get used to it.
After carefully studying the users’ experiences, Blue Goji plans to begin selling the Infinity treadmill to the public.
12. What are users most likely to do after running on the Infinity treadmill
A. Make more new friends. B. Gain more useful skills.
C. Be fonder of exercising. D. Prefer playing computer games.
13. What do we know about the Infinity treadmill
A. Users can not run on it. B. It is too expensive for most people.
C. Users can race against anyone. D. It can be bought in high-end gyms.
14. How did Leonardo Mattiazzi feel about the Infinity treadmill
A. Content. B. Disappointed. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
15. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To promote a new company.
B. To call on people to take more exercise.
C. To introduce a new application of virtual reality.
D. To discuss the relationship between life and modern technology.

I was really nervous on the first day of school. Even my parents seemed a bit nervous, but they were excited for me. They took pictures of me and my sister Via before we left the house, because it was her first day of school too.
We weren’t sure if I would be able to go to school because of my disability, but a few days ago, I had a tour of the school. After the tour, my mom and dad had different opinions about whether I should go or not. My mom thought I shouldn’t go, but my dad thought I could handle it. He believed I was becoming a strong person. He even told my mom that I could manage it. My mom seemed unsure, but she felt relieved when my dad said that he and Via wanted to walk me to school since it was on their way to the subway station. I was also glad that we would all be going together.
I know everyone in our neighborhood, and they know me too. I know every part of our block, from the bricks to the tree trunks and to the cracks in the sidewalk. I’m familiar with Mrs. Grimaldi, who always sits by her window, and the old man who walks up and down the street whistling (吹哨) like a bird. I know the shop where my mom buys our cookies, and the friendly waitresses at the coffee shop who call me “honey” and give me sugars. But now, everything felt strange to me.
Via whispered in my ear, saying that everyone was just as nervous as I was. She reminded me that it was everyone’s first day of school. I nodded, trying to calm down, but I still felt anxious.

Dear editor,
Nowadays, global warming is becoming serious. I am writing to put forward my suggestions on fighting global warming.
Global warming has many harmful effects, such as the rise of sea levels, many natural disasters and so on. Therefore, it’s time to take measures to make a difference. First of all, we should save energy. Secondly, we should plant more trees to absorb carbon dioxide. Finally and most importantly, we should raise people’s awareness of the importance of protecting the environment.
I hope that through our joint efforts, we can deal with global warming effectively.

【答案】As soon as we turned the corner, I saw all the kids in front of the school. Some of them were already in their uniforms, while others were still in their street clothes. My heart was pounding, but I tried to look confident as I walked towards the group. Via had already changed into her uniform and looked very cute. She gave me a big smile and walked over to join me.
The teachers were greeting new students and their parents in front of the school gate. They were welcoming everyone with smiles and kind words. I could see that my dad was feeling proud as he spoke to one of the teachers. My mom was chatting with another teacher and they both looked very happy. I realized that this was a new beginning for me, a chance to make new friends and learn new things. I also understood that my dad was right - I was becoming a strong person. I was ready for this new adventure.
