Top Exhibitions to See in London in 2023
Architectural: Vanishing Points
While we like to think of architecture existing purely in the real world, emerging designers and architects are using platforms like Instagram to create structures in the virtual world. This collection of works, which range from the practical to the fantastical, are all by architects who have gathered significant social media followings.
In the Digital Universe at ROCA London. 8 February—31 July, free.
Flowery: Orchids
This annual festival is back in bloom (开花), this time inspired by the beauty and biodiversity of Cameroon. Just like previous years, the orchids are spread throughout the various zones of the Princess of Wales conservatory and accompanied by sculptures that are just as colourful as the flowers on display.
At Kew Gardens. 4 February —5 March, &16.50—entrance to the gardens included.
Female Abstraction: Action, Gesture, Paint
Art history has often shone a light on the men of Abstract Expressionism, such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Well, now’s the time to let the most important women of the movement take the limelight in an exhibition that includes works by American artists such as Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler, but spreads the net wider to include the female abstract artists from Europe, Asia and the wider world, with whom most of us will be unfamiliar.
At Whitechapel Gallery. 9 February—7 May, 16.50—concessions available.
Powerful Portraits (肖像): Alice Neel
The largest UK exhibition to date of American painter Alice Neel’s work will bring together her figurative pieces from across her 60-year career. Neel went against the popular grain by painting figures when abstract works were most popular, and she painted subjects that other artists ignored — pregnant women, labour leaders, black children, civil rights activists and strange performers. It’s high time we had a major show of her work in London, and the Barbican has duly provided.

The US government took extraordinary steps on Sunday after the historic failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), assuring depositors(存款人) at the institution that they would be able to quickly access all of their money. The announcement came amid fears that the factors that caused the California-based bank to fail could cause a banking contagion(漫延), and only a couple of hours before trading opened on Asian markets.
The Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) said on Sunday that all SVB clients will be protected-including accounts that exceed the FDIC-insured limit of $250,000. “Depositors will have access to all of their money starting on Monday, March 13. No losses associated with the resolution of Silicon Valley Bank will be borne by the taxpayers,” the agencies said in a joint statement. “This step will ensure that the US banking system continues to perform its vital roles in protecting deposits and providing access to the money deposited in the bank for households and businesses in a manner that promotes strong and sustainable economic growth.”
Regulators had worked over the weekend to try to come up with a buyer for SVB, the second-largest bank failure in history. Those efforts appeared to have come up empty as of Sunday.
The regulators also announced that the New York-based Signature Bank had failed and its property was taken on Sunday. At more than $110 billion in assets(资产), Signature Bank is now the third-largest bank failure in US history. The officials also said that depositors at the bank, which was closed on Sunday by the New York state financial regulator, would not bear the loss. Signature’s shareholders and unsecured debtors will not be protected, and management has been removed, the officials said.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had said earlier on Sunday that she was working with banking regulators to respond after SVB became the largest bank to fail since the 2008 financial crisis, during which Washington Mutual collapsed. SVB had $ 209 billion in assets and $175.4 billion in deposits at the time of failure, the FDIC said in a statement. The bank mostly served technological companies. “We want to make sure that the troubles that exist at one bank don’t create contagion to others,” Yellen told CBS’ Face the Nation.
24. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The cause of the failure of Silicon Valley Bank.
B. The drawback of the US banking system.
C. The reaction of the public to the step.
D. The purpose of the measure.
25. How did the regulators deal with the failure of the New York-based Signature Bank
A. The unsecured debtors will bear the loss themselves.
B. The management of the bank is still in power temporarily.
C. The benefits of signature’s shareholders will be guaranteed.
D. It was closed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
26. What does the underlined word “collapse” in the last paragraph mean
A. Come to light. B. Come to a conclusion.
C. Come to an end. D. Come to life.
27. Which can serve as the best title for the news report

Massimo Bottura, a three-Michelin-Starred chef, has extended his culinary(烹饪的) empire globally. However, he says that the peak of all of his achievements is Milan’s Refettorio Ambrosiano and the following 12 global branches.
At Refettorio Ambrosiano, dinner guests are greeted by name. They dine on fine china at tables created by the country’s most sought-after furniture designers. The waiters are polite, and the chefs have been trained under the finest restaurateurs in the world. The set menu changes every day, depending on what comes in with the morning’s delivery.
This morning’s delivery contains dry arugula(芝麻菜), chicken close to its sell-by date and too-ugly-to-be-sold oranges. By dinner, however, the supermarket castoffs have been transformed into a three-course meal. The 100 or so diners — refugees, the homeless, and the unemployed — enjoy the meal with obvious pleasure, laughing with the volunteer waiters, praising the volunteer chefs, and forgetting, at least for an hour, the challenges of a life lived on the streets.
The brightest gems in Bottura’s culinary empire are not restaurants at all. He thinks of them as spaces that shine a light on the dignity of their guests while focusing attention on the food-waste problem by turning foods that were otherwise going to be headed toward rubbish bins into Michelin Guide-worthy meals.
Botura first thought of Refettorio Ambrosiano as a pop-up concept for the 2015 World Expo in Milan. The organizers had invited him to cook for the grand opening. Bottura proposed something different. He wanted to invite the world’s best chefs to cook with him for the city’s homeless, using leftovers. That idea soon got supported and turned into something more permanent.
Today the Refettorio is “a movement,” Bottura says. “It is a model for fighting food waste and isolation on the front lines. And it starts by looking at an old carrot or a piece of hard bread and catching sight of gold.”
28. How do the Refettorio Ambrosianos differ from Bottura’s other restaurants
A. The waiters are well-trained.
B. The tables are custom-made.
C. They are three-Michelin-starred.
D. Daily delivery decides the set menu.
29. Which of the following best describes the event at Refettorio Ambrosiano
A. An evening gathering for local chefs. B. A charity sale of supermarket castoffs
C. A wealthy meal for the less-fortunate. D. A volunteer training for the homeless
30. What does Bottura think of the Refettorio
A. It’s his best profitable restaurant.
B. It’s a good project for food safety.
C. It’s a pop-up concept to extend his business.
D. It’s win-win for the environment and society.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Less Waste, More Taste. B. A Dinner of Dignity
C. Best Restaurant, Best Service. D. The Power of Food
D
What may well be the oldest metal coins in the world have been identified at an ancient abandoned city known as Guanzhuang in China. Like many Bronze Age (青铜时代) coins from the region, they were cast in the shape of spades (铲) with finely carved handles. These ancient coins existed during an in-between period between barter (以物易物) and money, when coins were a novel concept, but everybody knew that agricultural tools were valuable.
Reading about this incredible discovery, I kept thinking about the way modern people represent computer networks by describing machines as having “addresses”, like a house. We also talk about one computer using a “port” to send information to another computer, as if the data were a floating boat with destination. It’s as if we are in the Bronze Age of information technology, grasping desperately for real-world reference to transform our civilization.
Now consider what happened to spade coins. Over centuries. metalworkers made these coins into more abstract shapes. Some became almost human figures. Others’ handles were reduced to small half-circles. As spade coins grew more abstract. people carved them with number values and the locations where they were made. They became more like modern coins, flat and covered in writing. Looking at one of these later pieces, you would have no idea that they were once intended to look like a spade.
This makes me wonder if we will develop an entirely new set of symbols that allow us to interact with our digital information more smoothly.
Taking spade coins as our guide, we can guess that far-future computer networks will no longer contain any recognizable references to houses. But they still might bring some of the ideas we associate with home to our mind. In fact, computer networks — if they still exist at all — are likely to be almost the indispensable part of our houses and cities, their sensors inset (嵌入) with walls and roads. Our network addresses might actually be the same as our street addresses. If climate change leads to floods, our mobile devices might look more like boats than phones, assisting us to land.
My point is that the metaphors (比喻) of the information age aren’t random. Mobile devices do offer us comfort after a long day at work. In some sense, our desire to settle on the shores of data lakes could change the way we understand home, as well as how we build computers. So as we cast our minds forward, we have to think about what new abstractions will go along with our information technology. Perhaps the one thing we count on is that humans will still appreciate the comforts of home.
32. Why were many Bronze Age coins made into the shape of a spade
A. These coins also served as agricultural tools.
B. This stylish design made the coins valuable.
C. A lot of emphasis was put on agriculture.
D. The handles made the coins easily exchanged.
33. Why does the author relate computers to spade coins
A. To show they both used to be new concepts when first invented.
B. To highlight their same importance in our civilizational transformation.
C. To suggest computers will experience dramatic changes as coins did.
D. To explain abstract digital worlds are different from concrete coins.
34. What does the underlined word “indispensable” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Flexible. B. Wasteful. C. Essential. D. Alternative.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. How Agriculture Loses to Digital Industry
B. What Coins and Computers Bring Us
C. What Bronze Age and Information Age Have In Common
D. What Ancient Money Tells Us About the Future Digital World

If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. 36 So challenge the following limits:
1.Figure out what you’re scared of and do it continuously.
If you’re a salesman, and you’re scared of talking to people personally or over the phone now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. 37 But don’t stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eye and say, “Go on. I’m not scared!”
2. 38
Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.
3. Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.
39 A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.
4.Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.
Don’t just limit yourself to your fellow travelers, try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they’re going to be. Get out of your house or go online to book your ticket right now. 40
A. Someone may hang up on you.
B. You should do it continuously.
C. You don’t need to go to the gym.
D. Running in the gym may be a better choice.
E. Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself.

A Painting Just Like Home
Lisa wasn’t so happy when the bell went for break. At her old school, she used to play with her friends. Now she sat alone in the corner of the field and watched the other kids play. The only thing Lisa liked about her new school was art. She hadn’t had art classes at her old school, but here they lasted a whole hour. During the art classes, Lisa forgot that she didn’t have friends here.
When clearing her table, Lisa noticed a box of chalk by the window. She put it in her pocket. Then she took her usual place at the end of the line. As she and her classmates walked down the hall and out into the playground, Lisa remembered how she and her mother used to draw chalk designs on the long drive way leading to their old apartment. The patterns are called rangoli, a traditional Indian decoration, and they look like stars and roses. Lisa’s mother said the drawings were to welcome guests to their home. Lisa missed the times.
Lisa walked to the basketball court and sat on the sidelines. She took the chalk out and began to draw her favorite rangoli pattern with huge petals and stars with eight points. “That’s pretty,” a voice said. She turned around and saw that Eric, a boy in her class, was watching her. “It’s called rangoli,” she said. “The floor of my grandmother’s house has pattens like that,” Erie said.
“What do you mean ” Lisa asked. “Hand me a piece of chalk,” Eric said. Eric sat down and began to draw. He drew flowers that were more detailed than Lisa’s, but still had huge petals. Then he drew circles inside circles, and surrounded them with small diamonds. Lisa kept drawing too.
“What are you guys doing ” a voice asked. Lisa and Eric had been so absorbed in drawing that the hadn’t noticed their classmate Emma had been watching them. “Hey,’ Emma said, sitting down beside them, “that looks like the rugs in my house. Except on the rugs, the shapes are bigger and flatter.”

W: I’m Lee Minwoo from South Korea. When I was little I was very interested in English. I learned English at school. There was a good teacher who was not a native English speaker. He taught French and German, but he really spoke English quite well. It was funny because I was the only student in his class — it was really a private lesson. I had an excellent coursebook. I still keep a copy of it. The front cover was red with a lovely picture, and it was very modern. Learning English was quite easy for me because the teacher was so good and he helped a lot. Also, I’m quite good at learning languages. It was really enjoyable to have classes. I loved the sound of the words. I felt really proud when my spelling improved day by day and I could read a short story. In middle school, English was still my favorite subject. I even stayed in America for one year as an exchange student. I learned a lot there, not only English but different cultures.

【答案】Dear Hans,
I’m glad to hear you will hold an activity on the “Chinese Language Day”. Here are some tips to make it amazing and educational.
First, engaging audience in entertaining activities is the key. It can start with Chinese calligraphy show demonstrating the beauty of Chinese characters. Then, why not hold a Chinese speech contest to highlight the unmatched charm of this elegant language After that, it could be wrapped up with “Jasmine”, a traditional Chinese song, which will certainly impress the audience.
I am sure this will be a feast of culture and I sincerely hope you could record this unforgettable show and share your achievement with me!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】范文:
“Show us,” said Eric, handing Emma a piece of chalk. Emma took the chalk and began drawing. She drew shapes that were full of straight lines and bright colors. They were bigger than the shapes Lisa and Eric had drawn, covering each other to form new shapes. She colored the drawings purple, blue, and white. “Wow!” the art teacher showed up and said. “It’s beautiful.” The three students stood up and looked at what they had done, their heart swelling with pride.
Hearing the teacher’s praise, many students gathered around. They made various comments, varying from the universe with planets and stars to a coral reef full of fish. Finally the teacher asked for Lisa’s opinion. Glancing at Eric and Emma, whose knees, elbows, and fingers were covered in colorful chalk dust, she beamed sweetly and said, “It looks like home.” “I think so. Why don’t you enlarge the home together ” At their teacher’s words, the students joined in the painting cheerfully, joy permeating the air of the court.

Text 10
M: Thank you very much. Thank you, Dr. Johnson.Well,it is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I wanted to tell you today is this: Education is important.
When I came to the U. S. , I was only thinking about being a carpenter. But I could not read the newspaper, and I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So I entered the City College to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college, because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you're 15 years old in my country, you finish school and then you learn a trade, and that's exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old I learned how to be a carpenter. A year later I came to America. Luckily I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes, and history classes, and I became a full-time college student. And today, when I look back, I'm so happy because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well.
