La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol close to Valencia in Spain. It is claimed to be the biggest food fight in the world.
What Happens at La Tomatina
At around 11 am, many trucks carry more than one hundred tons of over-ripe tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story-high wooden pole and reached the ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of a water gun. After one hour the fighting ends and the cleaning process begins.
The Rules of La Tomatina
Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants;
Do not tear other people's T-shirts;
You must squeeze(捏碎) the tomatoes before throwing them;
As soon as you hear the second shot of the water gun, you must stop throwing tomatoes.
Useful Advice
Wear old shoes and clothes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. They will most likely end up damaged or incredibly dirty;
Don't wear slippers. You may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle;
If you are not from Bunol, and you want to stay overnight, don't forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance.
Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much as possible!

It has been five years since I left my staff job and became self-employed. I remember my terror as I walked out of the office for the last time and the thrill when I sold my first piece days later. Working for yourself, setting your own hours and being responsible for your success or failure are exciting. I left my job just as summer was starting, and my first few months were as blissful as the fair days.
However, when winter came, an office where someone else paid for the central heating and my salary was guaranteed seemed attractive. January is tough for freelancers(自由职业者), and it was no different for me— after masses of work, I earned none. I shared my fears with some businesswomen I knew — what if the reality would be more like what I was experiencing
Whether through choice or circumstance, the number of freelancers is rising and, if you' re just starting out, it is scary. I've been lucky that these women making money their own way shared key lessons about what it takes.
You can't feel half-hearted about what you do because, at some point, you' re going to have painful days. When that happens, you have to remember why you wanted this life in the first place. Don't quit your job for something that you think might be more interesting, quit it for something you can't stop thinking about.
Setting up a business is tough. Rather than waiting until all is perfect, go for the moment when it feels as if momentum(势头) is with you. Look after yourself. There is no sick pay when you are self-employed. You can't do a bad day's work and blame it on your boss. You are the backbone of your business and you need to prioritize your health and well-being. Rest regularly and find like-minded people to support you and lift you up when things get hard.
Finally, enjoy it. Freedom is yours and, if you can make it work, there is nothing better.
24. What does the underlined word “blissful” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Boring. B. Challenging. C. Stable. D. Pleasant.
25. What bothered the author when winter came
A. She couldn't even earn enough to meet daily basics.
B. She eventually realized freelancing wasn't to her taste.
C. Masses of freelancing work brought her much anxiety.
D. The cold weather influenced her working performance.
26. According to the author, why should we quit for a new job
A. To escape from the current pain. B. To pursue what we really desire.
C. To explore where our strength lies. D. To satisfy our temporary interests.
27. What's author's probable attitude towards becoming freelancers
A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Cautious. D. Favorable.

Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb 15.
Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when confronted with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear.
Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid numbers-related situations, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to the subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.
Relief comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren't destined to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don't assume that they' re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math.” Daniel Ansuri, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged.”
Also, there are ways to manage your math-related stress. If you' re stressed before a math exam, spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It's about making sure you' re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist told the BBC. “A fast heartbeat and sweaty palms don't necessarily mean you will fail.”
A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fright before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University.
Math doesn't come easy, no matter how clever you are. Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Italian artist, was a huge fan of mathematics. But his notebooks show that Da Vinci couldn't do fractions(分数). He felt stressed to grasp, for instance, that dividing a number by one-quarter is the same as multiplying by four, resulting in a higher number than the original.
28. What do we know about math anxiety
A. It is common merely among students.
B. It leads to people struggling in their career.
C. It can cause physical and emotional discomfort.
D. People with math anxiety are often bad at maths.
29. Which of the following statements will Daniel Ansari agree with according to his study
A. Math anxiety may contribute to better grades.
B. Bad experience with math can cause cognitive disadvantages.
C. Math anxiety is not related to the ability to solve math problems.
D. Students with math anxiety may indeed experience lower math scores.
30. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article
A. Learn to make sense of your feelings.
B. Avoid thinking about failures in math.
C. Take all nervous energy as a challenge.
D. Pay little attention to your math anxiety.
31. Why is Leonardo da Vinci's story mentioned
A. To suggest a way to solve math anxiety.
B. To show that math anxiety is very common.
C. To explain why math is a difficult subject to learn.
D. To show it's not enjoyable for da Vinci to learn math.
D
Lots of people are concerned about the ability that artificial intelligence(AI) has to copy their voices. When AI is used to make false recordings of things that a person never said, it is called a “deepfake(深度伪造).” However. AI is helping people who can no longer speak, regain a version of their voice.
21-year-old Alexis Bogan used to love singing along with songs by her favorite musicians like Taylor Swift. She was a singer in her school music group as a teenager. But last August, doctors successfully removed a tumor(肿瘤) from the back of her brain. Then Bogan had trouble speaking. Though she has regained some ability to speak, there is no sign that she will ever be able to speak like she used to.
Last month, Bogan got her voice back in a way. Experts created a tool for her using AI. She uses a text-to-voice app on her phone by writing words and holding it up at the coffee shop so servers can hear her.
The app uses Open AI's voice tool. Programmers trained the app using a 15-second sound recording from a cooking video Bogan made as a teenager. Most of the video had cooking sounds, so that is all they could use. But it was enough.
The doctors are working with other patients to gather voice samples, hoping to bring the app to other hospitals around the world. But right now, the app, called Voice Engine, is not publicly available. The company is very limited in who we' re giving the technology to because they want to be sure everyone whose voice is being used has given permission. Other AI companies, however, are making their voice-cloning services available to entertainment companies or other organizations.
Bogan believes the technology will progress over time so that when she is older, she does not have to depend on the voice she had as a teenager. She is excited that she is contributing to a change that will help people who are currently using robotic-sounding voices.
32. What happened to Bogan last year
A. She failed to make her school music group.
B. She had a failure in the operation on her brain.
C. She lost her former voice after a brain surgery.
D. She had difficulty singing with famous singers.
33. How does Bogan use the app tool
A. By copying the sound of a teenager.
B. By making a 15-second sound recording.
C. By recording a cooking video of herself.
D. By writing down her needs in her phone.
34. What should the users of Voice Engine do first
A. Gather the samples from patients.
B. Permit Open AI to use their voices.
C. Record robotic-sounding voice themselves.
D. Provide voice-cloning services for companies.
35. What might be the best title for the text
A. AI Generates a New Voice B. AI Can Spot Deepfake Easily
C. AI Helps a Patient Regain Voice D. AI Recognizes Your Voice So Well

Fake news spreads rapidly, especially on social media. As students progress in their education, they need to be able to distinguish fake news stories from true, fact-checked journalism. 36
Check the history and reputation of the author and publication
Most fake news sites have just existed for a short time. 37 If it's sharing a popular article disgracing a politician running for office in 2020, for example, but the website itself is newly-created, it's likely that the article and site are not trustworthy.
38
When a big news event occurs, multiple media organizations will report it. Search for other publications that have posted stories about the news. If no other news outlets are reporting the story, it's probably a fake.
Be cautious about sensational(耸人听闻的) headlines
Fake news is designed to strike an immediate emotional chord in audiences by using an alarming headline. Often people share such a story based merely on the headline. 39 If a headline seems ridiculous, or simply lacks the ring of truth, search for reliable sources that confirm the accuracy of the story.
Carefully examine photos and other media accompanying the stories
40 If you see a shocking or particularly engaging photo or video in an article, take a moment to determine whether it is intended only to arouse an emotional reaction in readers. Use a service such as Tin Eye to find where else it appears. Often, there is an original version that tells a different story.
A. They even haven't read the article itself.
B. Here's our advice on how to spot a fake.
C. Consult the experts in media organizations.
D. Fake news providers often use eye-catching photos or videos.
E. Determine whether other media are reporting the same news.
F. You can check by entering its web address in the Domain Age Checker.
G. Photos and videos used in news are usually very attractive and reliable.

Decades ago, I received a special assignment from the poet Robert L. Hass, my undergraduate literature professor. Poetry continues itself by becoming a part of those who read it. Some poems I' ve memorized 53 with me, always vivid and fresh. Memorizing poetry will not make your life 54 , but it will make you more in touch with language and expands our own 55 of what we are.

Every year, our swim team runs the Snack Bar at the pool ground to raise funds for covering the costs of swim competitions and equipment. However, during our first summer meeting last month, Coach Abby informed us that the Snack Bar would be closed for repairs until August.
Upon hearing the news, all the team members were worried that without a Snack Bar, we wouldn't have funds, which meant, our swim team might have to be dismissed.
Supposing the worst, everyone was out of spirit. “Take it easy! I'll figure it out. For now, boys, jump into the pool and get swimming!” said Coach Abby, gently comforting us. But none of us were swimming our best, and even though Coach Abby was smiling as usual, it was evident that she was concerned about the situation.
During the break, I proposed exploring alternative approaches for holding a fundraising event. My teammates erupted into a lively conversation. D. J. suggested a karaoke sing-along, while Tamara offered to bring starfish cookies for sale. Manny brought up the idea of games and prizes, while I thought we could run a drink stand.
After a heated discussion, it was decided that each of us would take turns to host the event throughout the week. Coach Abby heartily approved of our plan. My drink stand was scheduled for the last day of the event.
I was so thrilled about the upcoming event that I began my preparations a day ahead. When I was making the drinks, I noticed a very dark cloud outside the kitchen window. “Uh-oh! That's not a rain cloud, is it ” I asked my mom, feeling a bit anxious. “Rain would be a disaster! It could ruin everything.”
“You know what they say,” she answered. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”
Then came the big day. Coach Abby helped me set up the drink stand and the teammates called out loudly to get everyone together at the pool ground. I hid a big box under the table and nobody knew what was inside. Everything was going smoothly as we wished.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Para 1: Unluckily, the clouds started to gather.
Para 2: After a while, Coach Abby made a cheerful announcement.
