Using an app to learn a language is convenient because you can follow lessons and check your progress anywhere, even if there’s just a few minutes. Below is a list of my favorite ways to learn languages from my phone.
Google Translate
Most of apps teach you a language through exercises and progressive steps, while Google’s simply tells you how to write and speak anything you ask it. Still, I think it’s a great choice for beginners. I like to learn languages with Google Translate for two main reasons: its long list of supported languages, and the several language learning methods.
Memrise
Memrise isn’t as easy to use for quick translations as Google Translate, but it is easy to work with, supports offline courses, and lets you learn a number of languages. You can start off simple or skip all the way through to more advanced lessons. I find Memrise to be unique in how it teaches new words and phrases. They combine words into sentences alongside words that sound similar in your language, which makes it easier to remember.
Busuu
Busuu’s app is user-friendly. You get to pick where you’d like to begin in the course. The words and phrases you’ll learn are especially helpful for beginners who might find themselves around people speaking a foreign language and need to learn words in real situations quickly. However, Busuu doesn’t support as many languages as some of these other apps, and you do need a user account to get in.
Rosetta Stone
Rosetta Stone is designed specifically for helping travelers learn basic words and phrases. There’s also a phrasebook with basic words and words related to restaurants, hotels, and getting around— all very useful for someone traveling. If you want, you can buy additional phrasebooks covering topics like shopping, colors, emergencies, and so on.
21.Which apps are suitable for beginners according to the author
A.Busu u and Google Translate. B.Rosetta Stone and Memrise.
C.Memrise and Busuu. D.Google Translate and Rosetta Stone.
22.What is special about Memrise
A.It is designed for travelers. B.It has unusual methods of teaching vocabulary.
C.It supports a large number of languages. D.It has real-time translations.
23.In which part of a magazine may this text appear
A.Travel. B.History. C.Technology. D.Business.

As Cary Fowler and Geoffrey Hawtin began thinking about ways to prevent hunger and protect the world’s food supply, they came up with an idea of building a global seed vault(种子库) into the side of an Arctic mountain.
About 20 years ago, Fowler, now the US special envoy for Global Food Security, and Hawtin, an agricultural scientist from the United Kingdom, imagined the vault as a backup spot for seeds that could be used to breed(培育)new crops if existing seed banks were threatened by wars, climate change or other crises. On Thursday, officials in Washington announced that Fowler and Hawtin were named the winners of the 2024 World Food Prize for their work and would share a $500,000 award.
“To a lot of people today, it sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It’s a valuable natural resource and you want to offer strong protection for it.” Fowler said. “But fifteen years ago, shipping a lot of seeds to the closest place to the North Pole that you can fly into and putting them inside a mountain— that’s the craziest idea anybody ever had.”
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault they created opened in 2008 and now holds 1.25 million seed samples(样本)from nearly every country. The structure was built into the side of a mountain, providing protection for over 6.000 varieties of crops and culturally important plants.
Fowler and Hawtin said they hoped winning the World Food Prize would help them raise more money for seed banks around the world. Operating them is not too costly. However, the financial support needs to continue forever. “This is really a chance to get that message out and say, look, this relatively small amount of money is our insurance policy that we’ re going to be able to feed the world in 50 years,” Hawtin said.
24.Why did Fowler and Hawtin win the 2024 World Food Prize
A.They planted lots of crops. B.They provided food for the hungry.
C.They invented varieties of seeds. D.They built a seed vault.
25.What can be learned about Fowler and Hawtin
A.Their seed vault is near the South Pole. B.They protect two million seed samples.
C.They each received a $500,000 award. D.Their work has gained wide support.
26.What does Hawtin want to stress in the last paragraph
A.It is difficult to feed the world. B.It is necessary to save money.
C.It is wise to fund seed banks. D.It is expensive to operate seed banks.
27.Which word can best describe Fowler and Hawtin
A.Peace-loving. B.Far-sighted. C.Hard-working. D.Warm-hearted.

How does social media affect our life today
A lot of people believe that social media is just torture for kids and young adults, which in a way it is. It doesn’t allow them to be 100% themselves and it can cause them to overthink and become more anxious and less confident.
Social media has caused people to rethink everything they do online from liking or posting a photo to sharing a post in case someone thinks that what they support or enjoy is meaningless. Do you know that selfies(自拍) are one of the most frequent causes of death of the modern generation In 2015, it was reported that a 21-year-old girl fell down a mountain just for selfies. There is a lot of such news every day, and that statistic is increasing every day.
With this generation, very few of them are speaking to each other directly because of communication on social media like messages. This can cause social anxiety for many people; they slowly lose their skills of how to speak to others face to face. I know it first-hand and it was difficult to tell myself that I needed to cut down on screen time and even harder to listen to and do it.
At the same time, there are a lot of positives on social media. Social media is a great way to connect with people who live far away, which has really helped people come together and feel less lonely if they live alone. You can express yourself by sharing your favorite songs or posting pictures of your new outfit. It’s much harder to feel embarrassed online than in person, so it’s easier for people to express their feelings on social media.
Social media is also great for raising awareness about things like charities. It is a powerful tool for people to share their stories, reaching new audiences around the world. The list of movements is getting longer and longer every day as more and more people use social media to raise awareness and promote the movements.
In conclusion, social media has its advantages and disadvantages like everything else does. It’s all about how we use it.

The 3D printer BioHome3D has once created a house. Now, an even larger printer called Factory of the Future 1.0(FoF 1.0) shown on April 23 at the University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) may one day create entire neighborhoods.
The new printer fills up the large building in which it’s housed on the Maine campus, and can print objects 96 feet long by 32 feet wide by 18 feet high(29 meters by 10 meters by 5.5 meters). It is four times larger than BioHome3D, which was put into use less than five years ago, and capable of printing ever larger objects. It consumes as much as 500 pounds of material per hour.
To meet the growing demand for housing, Maine alone will need another 80,000 homes over the next six years, according to MaineHousing. The new printer can offer a pathway for affordable housing to address homelessness in the region by promoting its 3D-printed home technology using bio-based materials. As for the original 3D printer, BioHome3D, it isn’t going away. The two printers can be used to work on the same project and there will be even more of them working together in the future.
The university wants to show how homes can be constructed nearly entirely by a printer with a lower carbon footprint. Such printed buildings can be recycled, which is unique compared to current construction. “You can basically break it up if you wish, reprint with the 3D printed parts, and do it again,” Habib Dagher, director of UMaine’s ASCC.said.
Since 2022, the ASCC has secured more than $93 million in support of this creative and other projects. “The US government provided most of the funding for the new printer, which cost several million dollars,” said Dannel Malloy, headmaster of the University of Maine System.
32.What can we learn about FoF 1.0
A.It was put into use five years ago. B.It will replace BioHome3D.
C.It can print huge objects. D.It has created entire neighborhoods.
33.What do we know about the houses created by FoF 1.0 according to the text
A.Their materials can be reused. B.They let out no greenhouse gas.
C.They are small in size. D.Their price is high for most people.
34.What does the last paragraph want to tell us
A.The new printer is far from cost effective.
B.The projects at the ASCC have been funded.
C.The University of Maine needs creative talents.
D.The funding situation of printers may get worse.
35.Which is the best title for the text
A.The History of Printing Industry
B.A New and Larger 3D Printer Invented by UMaine’s ASCC
C.The Homeless in the US That Need Help
D.The Introduction of BioHome3D

Getting work done, meeting deadlines and being productive 100% of the time are difficult for everyone. 36 . Luckily, here are several ways you can improve your time management skills.
Create a daily schedule to organize tasks.
Use a calendar or a piece of paper for scheduling. Map out exactly how you want to use your time each day, leaving nothing out of your schedule. 37 . For example, start your schedule with something like, “7:30AM-8:00 AM: Wake up and eat breakfast.”

Take short breaks so you don’t burn out.
You can’t work or be productive 24 hours a day. Schedule breaks throughout your day to give yourself some time to rest and relax. A break allows you to recharge and come back to a task with a fresh viewpoint. 39 , like drawing a picture, playing the guitar, or playing a game of chess on your phone.
Say no to extra projects if your plate is full.

The day ended as peacefully as it has for many years, but she didn’t know that her peace was about to be broken by a phone call that would change her life a lot.
The phone rang, and Mrs. Wang answered with her customary warmth, “Hello, dear, how can I assist you ” On the other end of the line was a man, his voice full of authority and urgency. Introducing himself as “Officer Li” from the Public Security Bureau(局), he claimed that Ms. Wang’s bank account had been stolen and that her immediate cooperation was essential to prevent major losses.
Mrs. Wang’s heart raced uncontrollably as the caller detailed how her personal information was used to take her savings. He directed her to transfer(转移)50,000 yuan from her account to a “secure” account number he provided. His voice was urgent, hard to ignore. Worried about her savings, Mrs. Wang agreed after a moment’s hesitation.
She went to the bank, her hands shaking as she took out the money. The bank teller saw she was upset and asked if she was okay. Nervous and embarrassed, Mrs. Wang made an excuse about a family emergency and left in a hurry. That day, she transferred the money as she was told, feeling lost and scared.
It wasn’t until the following morning, over a cup of tea with her neighbor, that Mrs. Wang’s experience began to sound very familiar. W: I guess he doesn’t let this scare him away from the ocean.
M: Yes. We’d better go now. Mr Johnson is coming. Don’t be late for the class.
(Text 10)
M: I have been a keen bicycle rider for about nine years. When I began bicycling, I found the flat roads easy but the hills almost impossible. Surprisingly, now it’s the opposite. A long flat ride can be both boring and tiring as you never experience that fantastic feeling of freedom when speeding downhill. Years ago, going uphill left me breathless. Now I have learned to take hills slowly. When I set off, I’m full of energy and the first hundred metres are amazing; the next couple of kilometres are a bit tiring; but on the whole, the experience is very enjoyable. Bicycling is like any other form of exercise I have tried as it is never a task but always a pleasure. The physical benefits are obvious but the mental benefits are equally important. When you are bicycling, you breathe fresh air, have time to think and can relax.

One possible version:
Dear Martin,
I’m excited to hear you’ re planning a trip to my city during the winter vacation!
For transportation, our city has an efficient metro system that covers most areas, so getting around will be easy. Just make sure to have a local mobile card to use map apps. Taxis and bike-sharing services are also widely available.
As for preparations, pack warm clothes since it is very cold here in winter. Don’t forget to bring a travel adapter for your devices, as our outlets are different from the US. Also, consider learning a few basic Chinese phrases— it will come in handy.
Looking forward to your visit!
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
Heartbroken, Mrs. Wang made her way to the local police station to report the scam. There, a kind officer, with a tone of deep sympathy, explained to her that due to the advanced methods of the scammers, the chances of recovering her money were slim. He said there were so many scams targeting the elderly that they were actively campaigning against them. He gently advised her to be more careful in the future and always check with her family or the authorities when something seemed strange.
Mrs. Wang reas very sad, but she decided to do something. She wanted to help others in her community. She started giving talks at community centers and libraries, telling her own story to warn others of scarns. Even though her voice sometimes shook, she was strong and wanted to make sure no one else would have the same bad experience. By teaching others, Mrs. Wang found a new way to live and a way to fight against scams.
