Nature’s beauty is all around you. Wild flowers shine in bright blues, yellows, and reds. Trees, with unique shaped branches, and leaves, decorate the horizon. Under your feet, pine needles, leaves, and grass give their natural beauty on the earth’s surface. But how many of you take the time to notice all of nature’s wonders
Hannah Bullen-Ryner is an artist who not only takes the time to “smell the roses”, but she uses them as a medium to craft stunning portraits of birds. Bullen-Ryner, a photographer by trade, began her artistic hobby shortly after her twin daughters were born. The young mother suffered from depression and anxiety. To seek a solution, she turned to nature.
Bullen-Ryner started spending time alone in the woods, foraging for materials: flowers, branches, leaves, and grass. On an impulse (冲动), she started forming a portrait of a bird with the items she had gathered. When her picture was finished, Bullen-Ryner realized that she felt calmand hopeful. The process had been healing and therapeutic (有疗效的).
Bullen-Ryner tells My Modern Met, “Finding the medium of land art has allowed my art and soul to connect to the earth. As a full-time Mama of nearly three-year-old twin girls, and someone who suffers from anxiety, my art is my quiet time, my peace.”
When Bullen-Ryner creates her artwork on the forest floor, she never uses glues or any other material to bond the foraged items. This means that a single breeze is able to carry away or scatter her portrait.
“People often ask me why I don’t make something more permanent or they say it’s such a shame that it’s temporary,” Bullen-Ryner explains. “But for me,” she continues, “it is the short-lived nature of what I do that has become therapy for my soul. I get to put down all my anxieties, my fears, and all the chaos from my brain and turn it into something beautiful to honor Mother Nature. I take some photos and then walk or cycle away, leaving it all behind and feeling calmer, more connected, and truly lighter.”
4. Why did Bullen-Ryner take up her artistic hobby
A. To kill time. B. To make more profits.
C. To serve as a treatment. D. To entertain her daughters.
5. What does the underlined word “foraging” in paragraph 3 mean

6. What do we know about Bullen-Ryner’s artwork
A. It is well received with customers.
B. It cannot be preserved for a long time.
C. It stimulated the local tourism industry.
D It won her widespread praise domestically.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Bullen-Ryner is grateful to nature.
B. Bullen-Ryner regrets what she has done.
C. Bullen-Ryner is into going to work by bicycle.
D. Bullen-Ryner persuades more people to participate.

Tardigrades (水熊虫), with nicknames like “water bear”, may be the toughest animals on Earth. They have evolved to live almost anywhere and survive almost anything. Some tardigrades can escape conditions that would kill most living beings, including extremes far beyond anything found on Earth.
Tardigrades have been around for at least 500 million years or so, possibly sharing a common ancestor with arthropods (节肢动物). Over 1,000 species are known today, including marine, fresh water and terrestrial tardigrades. Tardigrades are near the edge of visibility for most human eyes. A typical tardigrade is about 0.5mm long, and even the largest ones are less than 2 mm in length.
Perhaps the most famous thing about tardigrades is their strange and mysterious durability. Tardigrades are not immortal, but they have a powerful adaptation that allows them to survive for decades in extreme conditions.
To endure environmental stress, tardigrades suspend their metabolism (新陈代谢) through a process called cryptobiosis. They curl up and enter a death-like state known as a tun. Their metabolism slows to 0.01% of normal, and their water content drops to less than 1%. They survive in this state by replacing the water in their cells with a protective sugar called trehalose (海藻糖), which preserves all the cellular machinery until water is available again.
Some tardigrades in a tun can handle pressure as high as 600 megapascals(MPa). That’s nearly 6,000 atmospheres, or 6,000 times the pressure of Earth’s atmosphere at sea level, and it’s about six times higher than the pressure found in the planet’s deepest ocean trenches. Even half as much pressure, 300 MPa, would kill most multicellular life and bacteria.
Two tardigrade species flew into low-Earth orbit on the FOTON-M3 mission in 2007, becoming the first animals known to survive direct exposure to space. The 12-day mission proved that exposure to the vacuum (真空) was no problem for them, and the lack of gravity had little effect, either. Some tardigrades even laid eggs during the mission. Research has shown tardigrades can survive roughly 1,000 times more radiation than a human.
Chinese scientists have decoded the key mechanisms that make tardigrades radiation-resistant, which could shed light on how to make human beings stronger against radiation and how to increase the stress tolerance of human cells in the future, according to a study published in the journal Science in October 2024.
8. How does the author introduce the features of tardigrades in Paragraph 2
A. By making comparisons. B. By analyzing cause and effect.
C By showing examples. D. By listing figures.
9. Why can tardigrades possibly survive in extreme conditions according to this passage
A. Because they are immortal.
B. Because they can change extreme conditions.
C. Because they slow down their metabolism.
D. Because they can regain life from death for many times.
10. When tardigrades face pressure or space, what is a possible condition
A. They can’t handle pressure more than 500 Mpa.
B. They will be killed by the pressure about 300 Mpa.
C. They can only survive indirect exposure to space.
D. They are almost not affected by the lack of gravity.
11. What is the importance of the study of Chinese scientists
A. Their findings can be applied to help human beings.
B. They focuses on the reproduction of tardigrades
C. Their study can promote to study the dietary habits of tardigrades.
D. They proved tardigrades radiant-resistant.
D
Anyone who has left that spark of joy when a favourite song comes on the radio at just the right moment — or wept along with a singer who is expressing heartache — will understand the emotional resonance (共鸣) of music. But now, a growing body of scientific evidence is actually demonstrating that music can be medicine, too.
In a review of 400 research papers looking into the neurochemistry of music, Daniel Levitin, a psychologist and neuroscientist in Montreal, found that playing and listening to music had clear mental and physical health benefits.
One 2007 study from a team of Spanish researchers found that listening to music before surgery had the same effect in reducing pre-operative anxiety as taking diazepam (安定) — an important finding, as anxiety before a major surgery can affect post-operative pain and recovery time. Another Spanish study, conducted in 2018, found that patients participating in a music-therapy (疗法) programme experienced significant decreases in tiredness, anxiety and breathing difficulties, as well as an increase in feelings of well-being.
The Centre for Music and Medicine in Baltimor is taking music into the “precision medicine” (精准医疗) field. The Center is the brainchild of Dr Alexander Pantelyat, who specialises in movement disorders like Parkinson’s. Applying this kind of treatment to movement disorders is relatively new; previously, it was mainly the field of cancer therapies. Pantelyat explains, “Amazingly there is an understanding in the field of music medicine that there can be tailored interventions using music that a person actually likes, that speaks to them culturally, personally or autobiographically.”
Kerry Devlin, the Centre’s senior music therapist, says there can be folks experiencing intensive symptoms, like a decline in their ability to verbally communicate. Music, she notes, can sometimes help such patients find ways to respond again. “I’ve had the honour of making music with people and all of a sudden they’re coming up with new words. It turns into this beautiful unexpected moment. It’s a powerful thing to witness someone find themselves again for a moment, and a song is the vehicle for that shift.”
12. What can be learnt about music from paragraph 1
A. It merely brings happiness to people.
B. It can indeed serve as a form of therapy.
C. It is mainly used for entertainment purposes.
D. Its emotional resonance isn’t supported scientifically.
13. How does listening to music affect patients according to researchers
A. They can soon recover as well as before.
B. They don’t need to take medicine before an operation.
C. They feel less energetic, anxious and breathless.
D. They have their worry greatly reduced before an operation.
14. What is special about music therapy according to Pantelyat
A. It is a brand new therapy method.
B. It can be flexibly personalized.
C. It applies to movement disorders all along.
D. It plays a main role in cancer treatment.
15. What can be inferred from Kerry Devlin’s words
A. Everyone can benefit from music.
B. The music moment is powerful.
C. Music may help improve the weakened speech.
D. Songs can guarantee the speech recovery.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was backpacking and planned to climb a volcano called Volcan Baru. At 3,474m, it is the highest peak in the country and one of the only places on Earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time. It is an active volcano, but last erupted around 1550.
I set off before sunrise. It was a little cold, so I had pulled on tights under my trousers. I intended to reach the top by midday, and then return before dark to get a lift to my hotel.I’ve always felt safe travelling as a woman on my own, which I’ve done since my 20s. I love the freedom. When I got to the base of the volcano at 7 in the morning, the ranger disagreed to let me go alone, but said OK because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. It was not dry as you might imagine a volcano might be — there were trees and flowers all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who worked around there.I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph.
Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me. I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively (挑衅) towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see their teeth looked sharp, and that they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. I’d never been bitten by a dog, and I couldn’t help but fear what would happen. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Terrified, I slowly kept walking, saying, “Come on, good dogs!”

【答案】One possible version 1:
Good evening, everyone,
I’m Henry, an exchange student from the UK. It’s my great honor to make a speech on behalf of all the exchange students here.
Over these two weeks, I’ve experienced rich Chinese culture: tasting dumplings, learning calligraphy, and even climbing the Great Wall. The warmth of the Chinese people has touched me deeply. Despite initial language barriers, we bridged gaps through smiles and gestures, forming lasting friendships. This exchange broadened my horizons and taught me the value of cultural respect. Thank you to all teachers and friends for making this journey unforgettable. I look forward to keeping in touch and hope for more exchanges like this.
Thank you!
One possible version 2:
Good evening, everyone,
I’m Henry, an exchange student from the UK. I have had the privilege to participate in this two-week exchange program in China.
During my stay, I immersed myself in Chinese culture, visited historical landmarks and enjoyed delicious local cuisine. I also made unforgettable friendships with my classmates here. This experience has been incredibly enriching. The warmth and hospitality of the Chinese people have left a deep impression on me. I’ve learnt so much not only from the classes but also from daily interactions with everyone. I’m grateful for welcoming us and making our time here so special.
Thank you!

【答案】参考范文
Terrified, I slowly kept walking, saying, “Come on, good dogs!” Suddenly, one dog dashed up towards me, sinking his teeth into my leg. “Oh, my God, I’m in a dog’s mouth and he’s trying to swallow me,” I thought to myself, with the pain taking my breath away as I felt his teeth in my flesh. I picked up a rock to fight him off, but was nervous that he would go for my neck or that the other one would come to attack me together. Facing these two aggressive dogs,I desperately felt at a loss. Hardly could I step out of the trouble on my own.
Just at this critical moment, a pickup appeared, driven by the ranger: Seeing the state I was in, he immediately stopped his pickup, opened the door, and signaled to me to get in. When we reached the base, he helped me bandage the leg up, earnestly reminding me that safety comes first while travelling. I felt relieved and grateful. And from then on, I travel carefully as well as cautiously. After all, nothing is more precious than life.
