My family would describe me as anything but a risk-taker. “Grandma drives faster than you!” my younger son likes to joke with me. So when I announced I was going to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for a self-defense course, my children, my husband, and even my mom were a bit doubtful.
A gym near my house was offering two-hour classes including boxing, wrestling and judo (柔道). I signed up for it and for the next days I questioned whether yoga would have been a wiser choice. The morning of the class, I pulled up to the gym, grabbed my water bottle along with a bit of courage I brought with me, and walked inside. We learned how to kick and knee someone where it counts and how to strike using the palms of our hands. After the coach showed various escape skills, I found myself questioning my presence in such a setting. However, in the next second, I reminded myself that I had set out this journey to explore the furthest part of my abilities and to challenge the boundary of what I believed I was able to achieve.
Before I entered the gym, I never imagined I would have the confidence and courage to throw a blow that could discourage someone twice my size. Almost two years later, I still attend classes. As the oldest female in the class, I push myself to keep up, try harder and, more importantly, not quit.
Between increasing my strength and feeling confident about protecting myself (although I hope I never have to test my skills outside of the gym) , I’m proud of the risk I took in signing up for the course. I know that defending myself is not about strength, it’s about strategy. At the same time, I’m calmer and less anxious—a benefit my family enjoys.
As for my driving, after a recent lunch date, my mom suggested I speed up to at least the speed limit. She didn’t want to be late for her tennis match.
24. How did the author’s family think of her according to paragraph 1
A. She was dependable. B. She liked taking risks.
C. She used to enjoy her comfort zone. D. She drove fast.
25. What does the underlined word boundary in the second paragraph mean
A. limit. B. honor. C. aim. D. record.
26. What contributes to the success of the author
A. Strategies from the classmates. B. Her never giving up.
C. Encouragement from the family. D. Skills from the coach.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Self-defense training improves family relationships.
B. The training leads to better control in daily life.
C. Mom is still worried about the author’s driving ability.
D. Calmness gained from training increases mom’s confidence in me.
C
Have you ever imagined travelling to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, technology policy expert Alec Ross argued that, within ten years or so, we would be able to communicate with one another through small earpieces with built-in microphones. That’s because technological progress is extremely fast. It’s only a matter of time. Just as a “clever personal helper” like Siri or Alexa is getting better at understanding what you say, there is no reason to think that the future will not bring a “personal assistant translator”.
Nevertheless, translating is an altogether different task compared with finding the nearest Starbucks, because machines aim for perfection and reasonability, while languages — humans — are always imperfect and unreasonable. Replacing a word with its equivalent (对等词) in the target language is actually the easy part of a translator’s job. But this seems to be a tricky job for computers.
It’s so hard for computers because translation doesn’t— or shouldn’t — be simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, people need to understand a lot of information all at once. Think about all the related information that can help us understand what someone is trying to say: tone, body movements, situations, and even your culture. All are likely to express as much meaning as the words you use.
Therefore, we should doubt whether a machine can truly understand our world like we do. If people from different cultures can upset each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, when it comes to expressing and translating meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place. 28. According to Alec Ross, how will people communicate in the future
A. By using personal computers for translation widely.
B. By employing small earpieces with built-in microphones.
C. By turning to machines instead of human translators completely.
D. By hiring a clever personal helper like Siri or Alec Ross.
29. Why is it hard for computers to replace a word with its equivalent
A. Because it covers much more other than words.
B. Because it can’t infer the cultural meaning.
C. Because a man’s soul hasn’t been breathed in them.
D. Because it is different from finding the nearest Starbucks.
30. What’s the author’s attitude towards the machine technology
A. Unclear. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Difficulty of Translation. B. Travel without Headache.
C. Will the Language Barrier (障碍) Disappear D. Who will be a Better Translator
D
The rise of the Internet has been one of the most influential developments in human history, comparable in effect to the invention of the printing press and the telegraph (电报). Over two billion people worldwide now have access to more information than ever before, and can communicate with each other whenever they want, often using Web-connected mobile phones they carry everywhere. But the Internet’s huge influence has only just begun.
“Mass use of the Internet is driving one of the most exciting social, cultural, and political changes in history, and unlike earlier periods of change, this time the effects are fully global,” Schmidt and Cohen write in their new book The New Digital Age.
Perhaps the most far-reaching changes will come when the five billion people worldwide who currently have no access to Internet get online. The authors do an excellent job of examining the possible results of the Internet invention for individuals, governments, and institutions like the news media. But if the book has one major shortcoming, it’s that authors don’t spend enough time applying a critical eye to the role of Internet businesses in these sweeping changes.
At the center of the book is the idea that “technology is impartial, but people aren’t. “ By using this idea as a starting point, the authors aim to move beyond the now familiar optimist vs pessimist dichotomy (对立观点) that has characterized many recent debates about whether the rise of the Internet will finally be good or bad for society. In an interview with TIME earlier this week, Cohen said although he and his co-author are optimistic about many aspects of the Internet, they are also realistic about the risks and dangers that lie ahead when the next five billion people come online, particularly with respect to personal privacy and state monitoring.
32. Why does the author compare the Internet with the printing press and the telegraph
A. To present the development of technology. B. To show the creativity of human being.
C. To prove the efforts made by human being. D. To stress the great influence of the Internet.
33. What are the effects of the mass use of the Internet according to paragraph 2
A. They are immeasurable. B. They are uncontrollable.
C. They are worldwide. D. They are disastrous.
34. What is the major weakness of the book
A. It doesn’t recognize the influence of the Internet businesses.
B. It fails to look at the role of Internet businesses fully and objectively.
C. It lacks all-rounded monitoring on the sweeping changes.
D. It doesn’t cover the risks and dangers that lie ahead.
35. What do we know about the authors of The New Digital Age
A. They leave many questions unanswered.
B. They are optimistic about the future of the Internet.
C. They are not aware of the risks and dangers of the Internet.
D. They don’t take sides in examining the effects of the Internet.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2. 5 分,满分 12. 5 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many young Chinese people suffer from image anxiety. If you are someone who looks in the mirror every day and concentrate only on any tiny imperfection, you are not alone. 36 And for many people, struggling with body image is a continuous battle. It shows a greater and common issue: their search for self-acceptance and confidence.
“How unfriendly is the world to unattractive girls ” became a popular topic on Sina Weibo in March. 37 One internet user talked about how her friends would often cut her image out of group pictures because they thought she was too fat. “My nose is not high enough, my chin is short and flat, and my eyes are small,” Tang Yuqi, a college student, told China Youth Daily. She doesn’t even answer the door without putting on makeup first. “I just can’t accept myself if I’m not wearing it,” Tang added. What became clear was that this feeling of unsafety and alienation was all too common.
38 As the country’s economy has developed rapidly, people are more likely to be influenced by what others think of them. Greater time spent online also means more contact with advertisements promoting “paper-thin waists” or “chopstick legs”. 39 The anxiety has pushed some people into physical and mental illness. According to Beat, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity, the perfection of thinness is a key factor in worsening the illness and preventing recovery. Some people even go through surgery just to achieve what they believe society considers “beautiful”.
40 Growing taller and having perfect skin isn’t the solution to unsafety. The fact that every person is different is something to be celebrated. After all, perfection is dull and you are perfect when you fully realize yourself.
A. It is important to set up certain beauty standards.
B. Such unrealistic ideals only further young people’s anxiety and lead to unhealthy perfectionism.
C. It is a shared experience that many young people are facing.
D. The popularity of the topic shows that social media has a huge impact on young people’s self-image.
E. But beauty doesn’t come from a makeup brush or a thinner waist.
F. The topic attracted many girls who shared their personal experiences.
G. What promotes this anxiety among young people

When school was over, the day was fading and it started to rain. I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with long sleeping hours and dinner meals specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a bad feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy (嫉 妒) , but something like depression. I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain making an annoying sound to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the countless cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a fan of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, mainly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I depended on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom. But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

It is universally acknowledged that cats can keep us company and bring us joy. Unfortunately, several homeless cats deserted by their owners are often seen around our campus. With the freezing winter approaching, their struggle to survive becomes even more challenging.
We have the responsibility and the power to make a difference to the lives of these small creatures. Here are some ways we can help. First of all, providing safe food and clean water is of great importance. Stray cats often fall ill or even die because of eating dirty and unsafe food. What’s more, we can construct simple shelters to provide them with a warm place during the freezing winter months. Finally, we can use our radio station to spread the message about the importance of caring for stray cats and to raise awareness among all students and local residents.
Stray cats do deserve our care and attention. Let’s take action together to provide a harbor of love for these furry friends.
第二节(满分25分)
Today she showed up in a raincoat. Once she saw me, mom called my name excitedly. Almost everybody present looked in her direction. Covered by a heavy gray raincoat, she looked totally a middle-aged housewife, along with the creaking old bike. I was too ashamed to greet her, while she kept waving at me in enthusiasm as she drew near. “You must wait for long, darling. Are you cold ” She asked softly. In silence, I shot her a blaming glance and threw my backpack heavily into the front basket of the bike. Without a single word, I jumped onto the backseat, hoping to go home as soon as possible. She covered me with the back of the raincoat. Unwilling to look silly like that, I removed it impatiently on our way home.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in. Hardly had I managed to remove it again when I saw her red and tough hand that sheltered me from the rain with the rain coat, from which I could tell she was so cold to prevent the bitter wind that her freezing hands turned red. Mom bent forward and pedaled (踩踏板,骑车) with all her strength. All of a sudden, I recalled that she knitted most of my sweaters but none for herself. Slowly, tears rolled down my face and I wrapped my arms around her waist tightly.

W: That’s good news! What kind of books are they

W: Sounds interesting. What else caught your eye
M: In the fiction section, there’s a beautiful display of newly published novels. I picked one called Echoes of Eternity. It should be a heartbreaking story that unfolds against the background of a war. It’s about science, love and sacrifice.
W: I might check that one out. Anything else
M: Yes! There’s a non-fiction book called The Science of Happiness. It explores the psychology behind what makes us happy.
W: Sounds nice. Let’s go to the library right now.

Text 10
W: Today, let’s begin with note-taking techniques. Note-taking is an important skill not only for taking classes, but also for doing your job in the future. I’d like to draw your attention to certain points about taking notes. First, remember that note-taking should be 75% listening and only 25% writing, so don’t try to write down every single word the teacher says. Ignore what is unimportant and write in phrases not complete sentences. Second, leave spaces and lines between main ideas. You may want to add some information later. I find that some of you are very good at making use of color, mapping web and symbols such as arrows, circles and boxes. I highly recommend these tools to all of you, because the use of them makes the outline more easily readable and interesting than the blocks of text. It also makes sure that important words stand out. Here are some examples.
