“Every life is a boat, the dream is the boat sail.” Every child has a dream of what they want to be. When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father died and she was never able to do volunteer work with him. However, Renee's story didn't end there. She was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be anEmergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’ s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver's seat or using the water pump. Renee works nine to eleven days a month on24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter.Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job was, she replied, “Helping people and saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She's always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry.” With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn't bother her. She says everyone can get a fair shot and do the same jobs.
I was inspired by this because I knew I would be very scared to do her job and didn't know if I could handle seeing people die. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee's determination rubs off on me and makes me believe that I can do anything.

A TV series in England, Away from It All, has surprised everyone by becoming a huge success with young people.
Its success is surprising because its main character is a shepherd(牧羊人), and the series is about the relaxing lifestyles of people who live in the country. There is none of the action that we usually see on TV. There are also no stressful moments, busy offices, or crowded cities. Away from It All is set in the peaceful English countryside and tells simple stories of people's kindness.
The director of the series says its success is a sign of teenagers suffering from stress. He says that watching Away from It All helps teenagers forget about the pressures of exams and homework and the troubles that fill the world. He also claims that it's a good sign that today's youth are switching to happier TV series, as it shows they would like a happier and healthier life.
Although the series' success might have a good side, many teachers and parents are worried. They say that some of their students and children are becoming couch potatoes(电视迷) and are using Away from It All as an excuse for not completing homework. Some students have even refused to study for exams because they say that they can only achieve happiness by avoiding stressful situations completely.
One mother, Lucy Linney, said of her son Patrick, “Before he started watching Away from It All, he loved challenges and volunteered every afternoon. But now he has become a couch potato. His grades have dropped and he no longer volunteers. He says it doesn't matter as he just wants to‘get away from it all’.”
And what do the experts say Paula Ray, a doctor, says that TV can influence young people's lifestyles. But she says that if a young person reacts as strongly as Patrick, it's likely that there are other reasons for his change in the behaviour.

Although computer technology is often necessary today, using a pen or pencil activates more areas of your brain than a keyboard does. You can potentially remember more by handwriting, according to a new study.
The potential benefits of handwriting for memory have been debated for some time. The new study set out to answer one question: How does handwriting compare to using a keyboard when it comes to remembering new information
In total 24 participants took part. Researchers asked each of them to write with a pen and then each was also asked to type on a keyboard. While performing these tasks, each volunteer wore a cap that held electrodes(电极) next to their head. It looked somewhat like a hair net fitted with 256 sensors. Those sensors recorded the participants' brainwaves. The electrodes noted which parts of the brain turned on during each task. And they showed that writing turned on memory areas in the brain while typing didn't.
Audrey van der Meer, the new study's leader, says this suggests that when we write by hand, we remember better. “This is because writing involves complex movements that activate more areas of the brain. The increased brain activity gives the brain more‘hooks’ to hang your memories on,” she explains. Van der Meer also points out that writing by hand is related to visual notetaking. “Rather than typing blindly, the visual notetaker has to think about what is important to write down. Then, key words can be interlinked by boxes, arrows and small drawings,” she adds.
This study does not recommend banning digital devices. In fact, its authors point out, computers and other devices with keyboards have become indispensable in modern society.Keyboarding can especially benefit those with certain special needs (such as if they have trouble using their hands) and typing beats writing when it comes to speed, they add.
32. Why did researchers ask participants to wear caps in the study
A. To prevent them from being hurt.
B. To record their brainwaves.
C. To find out their hair's difference.
D. To test the new products.
33. What can be known about handwriting
A. It detects your memories for further recalling.
B. It reminds you to have regular reviews.
C. It helps us remember more details.
D. It eases your tension of memorizing things.
34. What does the underlined word“indispensable” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Necessary. B. Amazing. C. Precious. D. Relaxing.

One day a man saw an old lady, standing on the side of the road, but even in the poor light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her car and got out.
Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, “I'm here to help you, ma’ am. Why don’ t you wait in the car where it's warm By the way, my name is BryanAnderson.”
Well, all she had was a flat tire(爆胎), but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan checked under the car looking for a tool. Soon he was able to change the tire. As he was tightening up the lug nuts(螺帽), she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. The lady asked how much she should pay him. Any amount would have been all right with her. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He told her, “If you really wanted to pay me back, next time you see someone in need, give them a hand.” It had been a cold and cheerless day, but he felt good as he headed for home.
A few miles down the road the lady saw a small café. She went in to grab a bite to eat. It was a dirty looking restaurant. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant(怀孕的), but she had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase.
