Feeling discouraged after a favorite show ends is common, and it even has an unofficial term: post-series depression (PSD). Rita Kottasz, a marketing professor at Kingston University, defines PSD as “a feeling of emptiness and upset when something you love finishes”. This applies to TV shows, books, or video games, creating a desire for more.
The concept of PSD gained popularity on social media and fan blogs in the mid-20:0s particularly during the Golden Age of TV. Kottasz prefers rot to use the term PSD, instead calling it “consumer saudade ,a Portuguese word meaning nostalgic (怀旧的) longing. However, a journal editor convinced her to use PSD due to its established use outside of research.
Kottasz and her colleagues published a 15-item classification scale for PSD based on interviews with fans who felt sad after their favorite things mon emotions included frustration, disappointment, sadness and emptiness. Some fans even felt that life was less complete or that they had lost “best friends”.
While PSD is often associated with TV shows, Kottasz is exploring its connection to other media, such as the abrupt break of K-pop band BTS (防弹少年团) and novels like Harry Potter. Younger people are more affected than older ones, partially due to on-demand streaming and constant new content pushes from businesses like Netflix.
Contrary to popular belief, binge-watching does not seem to trigger PSD. Instead, long-term consumption may be a factor. Kottasz thinks watching a show over several seasons or reading novels across many years strengthens a person's relationship to the characters. In her 2019 paper, she cites a Harry Potter devotee who started reading the series at age 9 and was cruelly left behind' after the final book and film released years later.
But it isn't quite as simple as saying the end of a show or novel controls our emotional state Brian Kong, a Chicago-based psychologist, is concerned that PSD might imply a causal relationship between low moods and a program's end. Instead, he says that when viewers feel lasting negativity, TV consumption might be acting as an anesthetic (麻醉剂) for a deeper psychological issue, like how some people with anxiety or depression drink alcohol. Put another way, the low mood already existed, and watching the series only masked it.
28. Which of the following is a common reaction among fans experiencing PSD
A. A fresh sense of purpose for life. B. a deep satisfaction after the show.
C. A strong desire for a new hobby. D. A great sense of loss of best friends.
29. What does the underlined word " binge-watching" in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Watching some episodes of a TV show in one sitting.
B. Reviewing every detail of a TV show day and night.
C. Following the episodes of a TV show for a long duration.
D. Reading a book series while watching the TV adaptation.
30. What does Brian Kong imply in the last paragraph
A. Viewers with negativity like drinking alcohol.
B. PSD covers up a deeper psychological issue.
C. TV consumption is the root cause of low moods.
D. Watching TV series can address psychological issues.
31. What might the following paragraphs focus on
A. The marketing strategies of TV shows.
B. The solutions to post-series depression.
C. The difference between PSD and nostalgia.
D. The impact of social media on fan emotions.

In our information-driven society, shaping our worldview through the media is similar to forming an opinion about someone solely based on a picture of their foot. While the media might not deliberately deceive us, it often fails to provide a comprehensive view of reality.
Consequently, the question arises: Where, then, shall we get our information from if not from the media Who can we trust How about experts-people who devote their working lives-to understanding their chosen slice of the world However, even experts can fall prey to the allure gf oversimplification, leading to the "single perspective instinct" that hampers (阻碍) our ability to grasp the complexity of the world.
Simple ideas can be appealing because they offer a sense of understanding and certainty. And it is easy to take off down a slippery slope, from one attention-grabbing simple idea to a feeling that this idea beautifully explains, or is the beautiful solution for, lots of other things. The world becomes simple that way.
Yet, when we embrace a singular cause or solution for all problems, we risk oversimplifying complex issues. For instance, championing the concept of equality may lead us to view all problems through the lens of inequality and see resource distribution as the sole panacea (灵丹妙药). However, such rigidity prevents us from seeing the multidimensional nature of challenges and hinders true comprehension of reality. This “single perspective instinct” ultimately clouds our judgment and restricts our capacity to tackle complex issues effectively. Being always in favor of or always against any particular idea makes you blind to information that doesn't fit your perspective. This is usually a bad approach if you would like to understand reality.
Instead, constantly test your favorite ideas for weaknesses Be humble about the extent of your expertise, Be curious about new information that doesn't fit, and information from other fields. And rather than talking only to people who agree with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree with you, and put forward different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world. If this means you don't have time to form so many opinions, so what
Wouldn't you rather have few opinions that are right than many that are wrong
32. What does the underlined word “allure” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Temptation B. Tradition C. Convenience. D. Consequence
33. What's the potential result of oversimplification
A. it causes uncertainty about the world.
B. It enhances the understanding of true reality.
C. It leads to ignoring conflicting information.
D. It encourages fair judgement on complex issues.
34. What will the author probably agree with
A. Simplifying matters releases energy for human brains.
B. Constant tests on our ideas help make up for our weakness.
C. A well-founded opinion counts more than many shallow ones
D. People who disagree with us often have comprehensive views
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. Embracing Disagreement: Refusing Overcomplexity
B. Simplifying Information: Enhancing Comprehension
C. Understanding Differences: Establishing Relationships
D. Navigating Complexity: Challenging Oversimplification

It happens from time to time that after a whole morning of studying you are tired in the afternoon. It is then that you may want to eat. something sweet, perhaps a sweet drink or a chocolate bar to lift your mood 36 .
But a study suggests that sugar can make you feel worse rather than lift your mood. The German and UK researchers collected data from 31 studies involving nearly 1,300 adults. 37 Those emotions include anger, alertness, depression and tiredness. They found that people who have too much sugar become more tired and less alert within an hour, and that these feelings become more intense over time.
According to researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly, leading to a burst of energy and a short “feel good” period. However, as they begin to digest the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling. 38 As with caffeine, this prevents the body from relaxing, leaving people being tired and less alert.
39 According to WHO, it is healthy to have the sugars found naturally in fruit, vegetables and milk, so long as they make up less than 5 percent of our daily total energy intake.
So the next time you feel tired and can't concentrate on study and work, perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar. There are still other ways to relieve tiredness 40 .
A. Maybe a little exercise at midday is a better idea.
B. So cutting sweet food out of the diet is a good choice.
