31-year-old Canadian sustainability advocate Kristen Mandala worked as a tour guide in Central and South America before returning to Toronto in 2018. That experience was an eye-opener, revealing how people often feel too discouraged to act on the climate crisis.
Mandala has since grasped an essential truth: when it comes to finding a motivation for change, fear, shame, and judgment simply fail to prompt people to take action, especially regarding climate issues. Instead, they long for hope and the belief that they can make a difference. In 2019, motivated by these insights, she founded The Greener Good consulting agency. As stated on its website, the agency aims to bridge the gap for those hesitant about sustainable action by reconnecting them with nature.
Mandala actively promotes several sustainable practices. She advocates mass purchasing, buying pre-owned goods, and clothing repair, suggesting travelers support local hotels and restaurants. She also encourages public participation in climate conversations, whether through social media’s environmental accounts or by contacting government officials. The Greener Good doesn’t stop at consulting. It offers virtual and in-person workshops focused on enhancing planetary health, personal well-being, and understanding of sustainability. In her work with Earth Day Canada, Mandala is involved in workshops that explore smarter consumption methods, like reducing food waste, using alternative transportation, and cooking zero-waste, plant-based recipes.
Looking ahead, Mandala’s next objective is to scale up and hold workshops more frequently. Recognizing that young people will bear the principal burden of the climate crisis, she aims to conduct more workshops in schools, hoping to equip them with the knowledge and tools they need. She’s also trying to transform her own feelings of frustration, fear, and anger regarding the climate situation into fuel. By doing so, she aims to be a positive influence, encouraging those in developed regions to believe they can create change. Mandala invites people to follow her on social media, believing that everyone’s voice matters in the sustainability journey.
24. Why did Kristen Mandala found The Greener Good consulting agency
A. She was too discouraged to act on the climate crisis.

I was born with a missing left hand due to amniotic band syndrome(羊膜带综合征). Though it was a shock to my parents, a nurse encouraged them to raise me like any other child. My parents took this to heart, and I had a fairly normal childhood. I played sports, acted in theater, did well in school, and had friends. However, on my first day of high school at age 13, a classmate's stare made me start hiding my limb difference. I felt the need to fit in was strong at that age, and this incident made me impulsively put my hand in my pocket. Little did I know, this one day of hiding would turn into 25 years.
During those years, I always kept my limb difference hidden by tucking it in my pocket, covering it with long sleeves, or hiding it behind objects. I believed that my missing hand made me hideous and that people would be scared of me if they knew. I internalized this self-loathing and felt lonely and scared all the time. Despite friends, co-workers, and boyfriends telling me it was okay and that I shouldn't hide it, their words didn't matter. Only my own negative self-talk had the upper hand.
At 38 years old, tired of hiding and lonely, I met someone special who helped me unhide. This relationship lasted for 10 years, and from it, I learned self-love and compassion. Afterward, I saw my limb difference as unique and beautiful.
Unhiding brought about positive changes. I started taking better care of my hand, learning to protect it from the cold. My relationships improved too. Being comfortable with myself made others more at ease, and we could bond on a deeper level. I also found others with limb differences and discovered the Lucky Fin Project. I joined its board to raise awareness. Accepting my disability inspired me to educate others about disability as part of diversity through public speaking and writing. I transformed my career to expand the conversation about disability and wrote a book about my journey. Now, I'm building a global movement around unhiding.

In recent years, the phenomenon of warm winters has become more frequent, and it has brought about a series of potential impacts on winter wheat growth.
Warm winters may disrupt the growth and development of winter wheat. With the relatively high temperature, winter wheat may grow vigorously in winter. The plants may become spindly with poor tillering ability. Moreover, the growth cycle of winter wheat may be shortened. It may enter the growth period prematurely, and the roots and stems may not grow strong enough. For example, it may enter the jointing stage too early, making it more vulnerable to late spring cold spells, which can seriously affect the yield and quality of wheat.
Another significant problem is the reduction in cold resistance. Since the wheat does not experience sufficient cold acclimation during a warm winter, its ability to withstand low temperatures weakens. As a result, once sudden temperature drops or severe cold weather occur, the wheat is likely to be damaged, leading to a decline in production.
Warm winters also provide more favorable overwintering conditions for pests and diseases. Eggs, larvae, pathogens, and bacteria of pests and diseases can survive and reproduce more easily in such a warm environment. This leads to an increase in the base number of pests and diseases. In the following spring, with the rise in temperature and increase in precipitation, these pathogens will spread rapidly, posing a serious threat to the growth of winter wheat.
Soil moisture conditions are also affected. During warm winters, the evaporation of soil moisture speeds up, while precipitation is relatively scarce. This may lead to insufficient soil moisture, affecting the water supply required for the growth of winter wheat. In the following spring, when the crops start to turn green, the lack of soil moisture will also affect their vigorous growth.
According to past experience, the probability of late spring cold spells is often higher after warm winters. Severe late spring cold spells can cause freezing damage to winter wheat. The leaves and stems of winter wheat may freeze and harden, and in severe cases, the plants may even die.
It is crucial for farmers and relevant departments to closely monitor the impact of warm winters on winter wheat and take appropriate measures to mitigate potential losses.
32. What does the underlined word “spindly” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Strong and thick.
B. Weak and thin.
C. Tall and flexible.
D. Short and steady.
33. Why does warm winter reduce the cold resistance of winter wheat
A. Because the wheat grows too fast.
B. Because the soil moisture is insufficient.
C. Because the wheat is damaged by pests.
D. Because the wheat doesn't have enough time to adapt to cold.
34. What can we infer from the passage about pests and diseases after a warm winter
A. They will die due to the abnormal temperature.
B. They will grow less compared to normal winters.
C. They will cause more harm to winter wheat in spring.
D. They will severely affect the leaves and flowers of winter wheat.
35. What is the main purpose of this passage
A. To introduce the advantages of warm winters for winter wheat.
B. To warn people of the potential harm of warm winters to winter wheat.
C. To explain how to plant winter wheat in warm winters.
D. To compare the differences between warm winters and normal winters.

A bet with my friend
As the exam day loomed closer, my mind was a chaotic mess. The bet with my friend about treating the one who gets a better result to a meal kept echoing in my head. Driven by vanity, I yearned to win so badly that I could almost taste the victory. As the crucial exam, which would determine our academic progress for the semester, drew near, the atmosphere in the classroom was thick with tension. It was as if a heavy fog of anxiety had settled over every desk and chair.
My friend, sitting beside me, was fully absorbed in intense preparations. Every spare moment was seized to review piles of notes and textbooks. With a focused look, they flipped through pages quickly, their eyes scanning each line with precision. They scribbled down key points in a small notebook, underlined important concepts with a bright - colored pen, and repeatedly recited formulas in a low voice, as if trying to engrave them into their memory. Their determination was evident, and they left no stone unturned in the pursuit of good grades.
In stark contrast, I sat there, twiddling my thumbs. Despite the approaching test, I couldn't bring myself to study seriously. Thoughts of winning the bet due to some stroke of luck occupied my mind. I had made a bet with another classmate that I could pass the exam without much study.
I watched my friend's frantic efforts with a mix of envy and complacency. I envied their self - discipline but also felt complacent, thinking that perhaps fate would smile upon me without much effort on my part.
The night before the exam, while my friend was engaged in a final review session, poring over their notes and doing last - minute calculations, I chose to idle away the time. I browsed through my phone aimlessly, scrolling through various social media feeds. I watched some mind - less videos that offered momentary entertainment but no real value. I even took a long nap, all while convincing myself that I'd be able to wing it. I naively believed that my natural intelligence would be enough to get me through the exam unscathed.

Dear Mark,

In Chinese culture, snakes symbolize wisdom, as they cleverly navigate their surroundings. Secondly, the snake represents transformation and renewal. It sheds its skin, which is seen as a powerful symbol of rebirth and starting anew. What is more, wearing it is believed to attract the positive qualities associated with the snake. It's also a wonderful connection to Chinese traditions, especially during the special time of the Lunar New Year.
If you want to know more, just let me know!
Best regards,
67. 续写 Li Hua
As soon as the test papers were distributed, panic surged within me. The questions seemed daunting, and I struggled to recall the knowledge I should have learned. Glancing at my friend, I saw them confidently writing answers. Regret for my laziness set in, but I knew I had to make the best of it. With a deep breath, I focused on the paper, trying to piece together what I could. After the results were announced, I unsurprisingly didn't win the bet. But my friend, being the kind person they are, didn't gloat. Instead, they patted me on the back and said we should still go to the restaurant as planned.
Walking into the restaurant, I felt a sense of liberation. I sincerely congratulated my friend, saying, "You really nailed it! Your hard work paid off big time, and I'm so happy for you." My friend smiled warmly and replied, "Thanks! But remember, this isn't about just winning a bet. Success comes from putting in the real effort. Next time, if you prepare like I did, I'm sure you'll get great results too." Their words were like a guiding light, and I knew I had a new resolve. From then on, I'd no longer rely on luck but work hard to earn my own victories. Over the delicious meal, we laughed and talked, and our friendship grew even stronger.
