The last few months had brought to my attention an important incompatibility between us — one that I’d never noticed before. Despite being a pair of lifelong travelers, Felipe and I seldom travel in a similar way. The reality about Felipe is that he’s both the best traveler I’ve ever met and by far the worst. He hates strange bathrooms and dirty restaurants and uncomfortable trains and foreign beds. Given a choice, he will always select a lifestyle of routine, familiarity, and reassuringly boring everyday practices. All of which might make you assume that the man is not fit to be a traveler at all. But you would be wrong to assume that, for here is Felipe’s traveling gift, his superpower, the secret weapon that makes him peerless. He can create a familiar habitat of boring everyday practices for himself anyplace, if you just let him stay in one spot. He can assimilate absolutely anywhere on the planet in about three days, and then he’s capable of staying put in that place for the next decade or so without complaint. This is why Felipe has been able to live all over the world. Not merely travel, but live. Over the year he has folded himself into societies from South America to Europe, from the Middle East to the South Pacific. He arrives somewhere totally new, decides he likes the place, moves right in, learns the language, and instantly becomes a local.
While Felipe can find a corner anywhere in the world and settle down for good, I can’t. I am infinitely curious and almost infinitely patient with minor disasters, which makes me a far better day-to-day traveler than he will ever be. So I can go anywhere on the planet — that’s not a problem. The problem is I just can’t live anywhere on the planet. I’d realized this only a few weeks earlier, back in northern Laos, when Felipe had woken up one lovely morning in Luang Prabang and said, “Darling, let’s stay here.”
“Sure,” I’d said. “We can stay here for a few more days if you want.”
“No, I mean let’s move here. Let’s forget about me immigrating to America. It’s too much trouble. This is a wonderful town. I like the feeling of it. It reminds me of Brazil thirty years ago. It wouldn’t take much money or effort for us to run a little hotel or shop here, rent an apartment, settle in ...” He was serious. He would just do that.
But I can’t.
24. The word “incompatibility” (paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A. harmony B. negotiation C. difference D. tension
25. According to the writer, what is Felipe’s traveling gift
A. He can speak dozens of languages.
B. He can make himself at home anywhere.
C. He can decide at first sight if he likes the place.
D. He can find interesting activities in boring places.
26. According to the writer, why is she a better traveler than Felipe
A. She is much more restless than he is.
B. She can travel for a longer time than he can.
C. She is more curious about local life than he is.
D. She can live better in poor places than he can.
For thousands of years, the Taklamakan Desert preserved more than the bodies of those buried in China’s Tarim Basin. Archaeologists found pebble-sized pieces of a yellowish substance: the world’s oldest cheese, scattering around the necks of some bodies in Xiaohe, a Bronze Age cemetery. A recent study, published in Cell, analyzes the DNA of this ancient dairy, shedding light on how it was made and how its production spread.
In a previous study, researchers took tiny samples of the 3,500-year-old cheese attached to the mummies’ necks. An analysis of proteins in those bits unveiled the presence of Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens, a microbe (发酵菌) used to produce a type of fermented cheese called kefir.
“That was really amazing”, says Qiaomei Fu, a scientist at Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. Having worked with ancient human DNA, she wanted to study the microbe’s DNA. However, extracting complete DNA from such ancient samples proved challenging, as it broke down over time and mixed with genetic information from the environment. In 2014, Fu began designing special molecules (分子) that could efficiently capture the microbe’s ancient DNA from the cheese. After years of work, Fu and her team managed to reconstruct 92 percent of the ancient microbe’s DNA.
From this microbe’s DNA, the team could explore the history of the cheese’s production. Kefir is made by mixing milk with an existing microbe, and as it spread, so did the microbes used to make it. By comparing the DNA from the Xiaohe cheese with that of others, two branches emerged: one from Europe and the Pacific Islands, and the other from Tibet and East Asia, which suggests a possible route for kefir’s spread from Xinjiang to East
Asia, possibly through migration.
The DNA analysis also pointed to the interaction of ancient peoples. It uncovered that samples from cows and goats were found. Interestingly, the goat DNA resembled that of other ancient Central Asian goats, suggesting the mixing of population in Xinjiang with other Bronze Age populations. Researchers anticipate that further analysis of microbes in the cheese, along with other biological samples, could provide deeper insights into interactions between ancient populations.
27. What’s the significance of the DNA analysis of the ancient cheese
A. It reflects the civilization of the Bronze Age.
B. It proves China to be the first to produce dairy products.
C. It uncovers the mysterious buried bodies in Xiaohe cemetery.
D. It reveals production methods and transmission routes of the cheese.
28. What obstacle did Fu’s team encounter in their study
A. The complete set of DNA was hard to obtain.
B. The team lacked working experience with DNA.
C. The previous study proved the absence of a microbe.
D. The cheese samples were resistant to DNA extraction methods.
29. What can be inferred from the research findings
A. Ancient people migrated typically with cows and goats.
B. Cheese played an essential role in ancient people’s diets.
C. Kefir originated in Europe and spread to Tibet and East Asia.
D. Kefir was possibly exchanged between peoples across different regions.
30. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. What’s in the Oldest Cheese
B. Can DNA Tell Secrets of Ancient Diets
C. Did Ancient Civilizations Perfect Cheese-Making
D. How Did the Oldest Cheese Connect with Cultural Exchange
The Human Spark
“What is civilization ” asked Kenneth Clark 50 years ago in the seminal BBC series on the subject. “I don’t know, and I can’t define it in abstract terms, yet. But I think I can recognize it when I see it, and I’m looking at it now. ”And he turned to gesture behind him, at the soaring Gothic towers and flying buttresses of Notre Dame (巴
黎圣母院).
It seems inhuman to care more about a building than about people. That the sight of Notre Dame going up in flames has attracted so much more attention than floods in southern Africa which killed over 1,000 arouses understandable feelings of guilt. Yet the widespread, intense grief at the sight of the cathedral’s collapsing steeple is in fact profoundly human – and in a particularly 21st-century way.
It is not just the economy that is global today, it is culture too. People wander the world in search not just of jobs and security but also of beauty and history. Familiarity breeds affection. A building on whose sunny steps you have rested, in front of which you have taken a selfie with your loved one, becomes a warm part of your memories and thus of yourself.
This visual age has endowed beauty with new power, and social media have turned great works of art into superstars. Only a few, though, have achieved this status. Just as there is only ever a handful of world-famous actors, so the pantheon of globally recognizable cultural symbols is tiny: the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s David, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid – and Notre Dame. Disaster, too, is visual. In the 24 hours after the fire started, videos on social media of the burning cathedral were viewed nearly a quarter of a billion times.
Yet the emotions the sight aroused were less about the building itself than about what losing it might mean. Notre Dame is an expression of humanity at its collective best. Nobody could look up into that vaulted ceiling without wondering at the genius of the thousands of anonymous craftsmen who, over a century and a half, realized a vision so grand in its structure and so delicate in its detail. Its survival through war and revolution connects the present to the past.
The fire also binds people to each other. The outpouring of emotion it has brought forth is proof that we are all in it together. When nationalism is a rising threat, shared sadness makes borders suddenly irrelevant; a love of culture has the power to unite. When extremism divides Muslim from Christian and religious people from non-religious, those of all faiths and none are mourning together.
And it will be rebuilt. The morning after the fire, the many Parisians who went to the cathedral to mourn its destruction found comfort instead. Although the spire is gone, the towers are still standing and it seems likely that the whole building can be revived. The effort to rebuild it, like the fire, will bring people together. Within 24 hours, ?600m ($677m) had been raised from businesses and rich people, and a rash of crowdfunding campaigns started. A high-resolution laser scan of the building, carried out recently, should help.
It will never be the same, but that is as it should be. As Victor Hugo wrote in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, “Great edifices, like great mountains, are the work of centuries. Art is often transformed as it is being made...Time
is the architect. The nation is the builder.”
31. According to the author, ______.
A. we should not care more about a building than we do about people
B. it’s understandable that the floods in Africa has attracted more attention
C. it’s human for people to feel deeply sorry for the destruction of Notre Dame
D. people are supposed to feel guilty if they are more concerned about buildings
32. In 21st century, what make great works of art even more popular
A The beauty of art and value of culture
B. People’s search for jobs and sense of security
C. The expression of humanity and amazing craftsmanship
D. The arrival of visual age and popularity of social media
33. The author believes that culture ______.
A. is an expression of humanity at its collective best
B. arouses emotions and reminds people what they are losing
C. brings people together regardless of their nationality and religious belief
D. threatens the outpouring of emotions and makes people’s sadness irrelevant
34. Which word can best describe the writer’s attitude towards the rebuilding of Notre Dame
A. Positive B. Negative C. Neutral D. Concerned

The game of baseball has long been woven into the fabric of American life. It is no surprise then that the baseball glove is associated with fond memories. ____35____ It is also an example of a product that has been perfected over time.
Originally, baseball was played without gloves because the balls were home-made and soft. Made from string covered with leather or cotton sacks stuffed with rags, the balls were easier on the hand. The late 19th century saw baseballs made by machine and standardized across the United States to be tighter and harder, and they were capable of hurting a catcher’s hands. ____36____ Baseball gloves were initially just leather work gloves adapted to suit the player’s needs
____37____ However, the simple padded work gloves could not prevent knuckles (指关节) from bursting, fingers from splitting and bones from breaking. The solution More padding was added to the glove.
____38____ This design changed little until the late1930s, when an extra flap web that looked like a fishing net was added between the thumb and the fingers. This made it possible for first basemen to catch thrown balls more easily, revolutionizing the function of the glove.
During the first half of the 20th century, fielders’ gloves evolved steadily to improve their catch. Field glove designs were adapted with longer fingers, deeper pockets and larger webs between the thumb and the fingers. New designs also added lace between the fingers, making it easier for players to catch the ball. Even more significantly, a new glove design was introduced in 1957, with a special feature in the heel of the glove’s palm, which allowed the glove to completely fold around the ball. ____39____ This characteristic has become the standard for glove design to this day. Catchers’ and first basemen’s gloves also adopted this style.
From fingerless work gloves to flashy gloves designed for each position, the evolution of the baseball glove since the early days of professional baseball is as fascinating as the game itself. Due to technological advances, we may look forward to even newer designs for baseball gloves.
A. Behind every glove is a great glove story.
B. If a glove is well cared for, it can last decades.
C. This led to gloves being designed to soften the catch.
D. However, the baseball glove is more than an item of emotional value.
E. Thanks to this new design, fielders could easily snatch (一下夺过) the ball with only one hand.
F. Early first baseball glove designs were specialized from the padded fielders’ glove to an open glove design.
G. For example, catchers’ gloves were work gloves without fingers to allow the player to better handle the ball.
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
We all love to criticize, but unfortunately, we also hate being criticized. We freely post and comment on others, but feel annoyed at the way others assess us, both online and in person. The world seems unlikely to change anytime soon. Fortunately, though, each of us can change how we give and take criticism, which will make us less likely to harm others, more resistant to being angry, and better able to benefit from feedback — even when it is negative.
Criticism is defined as judgment of the merits (优点) and faults of something or someone in written or spoken form. Technically, criticism can include praise, but that isn’t what concerns us here. What annoys us is criticism of
the negative variety, even when well-intentioned — so-called constructive criticism, which means to provide guidance so we can improve. Worst of all is destructive criticism, which aims to cause hurt or damage.
The culture of criticism isn’t going away. The only way to flourish (繁荣) in it, and despite it, is to adopt new habits of getting and giving critical feedback. One rule is to assume that criticism, even when it seems personal, is not actually about you personally. When we receive criticism, we make it personal in two ways. First, we may naturally analyze the critic rather than the criticism. Second, we tend to consider the criticism a judgment on our natural abilities, rather than on our performance. Interestingly, even among young children, research shows that viewing criticism as a judgment on one’s abilities can lead to lower self-worth, lower positive mood, and less persistence at tasks.
If taking criticism is particularly hard for you, you are not alone. However, taking criticism badly is more embarrassing, ultimately, than the criticism itself. If we do the work to learn to accept negative feedback, we will be much better off.
40. What will be the results of changing the way we give and take criticism

【答案】Possible version 1:
Dear fellow students,
This semester, our school’s “Let’s Be Healthy Together” sports initiative has seen a fair share of participation. Many students have been hitting the gym, joining team sports, or jogging around the campus, which is great. However, some issues have emerged. Some students are too occupied with studies to make time for sports, while others lack the motivation to start.
Here, I’d like to advocate for a more active lifestyle. We should view sports as an essential part of our daily routine, not an added burden. For those short on time, even a 15-minute brisk walk or a quick stretching session can make a difference. Let’s encourage each other to step out of our comfort zones and onto the field or court.
Let’s overcome these obstacles and fully embrace the benefits of sports and fitness. Together, we can build a healthier and more energetic body.
Possible versions 2:
Dear fellow students,
Our school has launched the remarkable “Let’s Be Healthy Together” sports activity this term, which has been wholeheartedly embraced by all of us.
Since its start, the campus has witnessed a series of vibrant activities. Every morning, after the second period, all the students gather on the playground and run 3laps together. Students are also encouraged to take part in team sports like football or basketball. In addition to these team sports, many students choose to practice badminton, table tennis or gymnastics.
These activities not only enhance physical fitness but also cultivate concentration and coordination. To make the sports activities more fruitful and beneficial, I advocate the school organize more professional coaching sessions to help students improve their skills and avoid injuries. Besides, it would be great if more fun is added, such as relays or obstacle races.
I believe through continued efforts we can ensure that every student can get full rewards of sports and fitness
That’s all! Thank you!
