Not too long ago, I was at the grocery store with my husband, and an elderly man in front of us was using a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) card. The card reader kept rejecting his payment. He had apparently gone over his limit for the month. He was confused and more than a little distressed about the situation.
While I was trying to decide if I would offer to step in and pay the difference, the young man checking him out said, “Sir, this happens all the time. It’s not a problem.”
The line behind us was growing long, but the young man didn’t show an ounce of impatience or irritation. He confirmed that the man was, indeed, over his limit for the month. Turned out, he wasn’t over by much, so the checker helped the customer determine which two or three items that he could make do without until his account was topped up.
“You’ll definitely want to keep the milk and the butter and the eggs and the bread.” Then the clerk pulled out a jar of salsa, a bottle of juice and some crackers that he and his customer a greed could wait until the beginning of the new month.
The young man assured his older customer, once again, that this was a common occurrence and not a problem at all. The man left with his dignity intact(完好无损的) and, no doubt, with a renewed sense of loyalty to that grocery-store chain.
When it was my turn, I made note of the name on his nametag, and when I got home, I sent an e-mail to the manager of the store praising the employee for his kindness and customer service. I got a return e-mail that day with thanks from the manager, letting me know that my note would be included in the employee’s file and noted each time he was up for a raise or promotion.
While his act of kindness made a positive impact on the life of someone who was struggling that day, I hope my act of kindness at least had a positive effect on that young man’s career — and possibly his paycheck.

A. To call on people to help each other.

Have you ever joyously stepped out to your backyard garden, freshly brewed coffee in hand, only to find your cared-for plants and herbs wilted (枯萎的) and dying Was the soil too dry Did pests find their way in During times like these, some frustrated gardeners may wish their fickle ficus(榕树) would just tell them what it needs. A new Microsoft-partnered project in the UK is trying to see if that concept can be demonstrated in the real-world.
Next year, the Royal Horticultural Society in England will show off an “intelligent garden” that uses an AI model to monitor the garden’s environment and inform gardeners when it needs care. Visitors can ask the AI-powered garden questions. The model could then respond with phrases like “I need a bit more water,” or “I could use a haircut” depending on data captured in the soil.
The technical components of the garden are the product of a partnership between AI start-up Avande and Microsoft. The garden relies on a network of sensors nestled throughout the garden measuring environmental factors like soil moisture, alkalinity (碱度), and nutrient levels as well as wind and projected rainfall. All of that data is then sent to a specially designed AI model at the back of the garden. The model, powered by Microsoft’s Azure Open AI Service, can then analyze those factors and inform gardeners on best feeding, watering, or trimming.
In theory, insights provided by models like this one could help gardeners allocate resources efficiently and avoid over-watering plants before rainfall, both of which can aid in sustainability efforts. Those tools could be a welcome convenience for casual growers or businesses looking to reduce costs. It’s unclear, however, whether even the best models can account for something abnormal and individual plant tendencies with the same level of care as experienced gardeners.
Several currently available apps also use AI to help gardeners identify unknown plants by comparing a photo of them against a large online database. But as past reporting has shown, simply trusting an AI to tell you whether a plant or fungi of unknown origin is safe to eat isn’t wise, and could have dangerous results.
28. What will AI be used to do in gardening according to the text
A. Look after the plants in place of gardeners.
B. Help the gardeners interact with the plants.
C. Improve the condition of soil in the garden.
D. Design the environmentally-friendly gardens.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How the intelligent garden works.
B. Why the intelligent garden is popular.
C. How the intelligent garden was invented.
D. What advantages the intelligent garden has.
30. What does the underlined word insights mean in paragraph 4
A. Experience. B. Data. C. Methods. D. Tests.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward AI’s use in gardening
B. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Objective. D. Negative.
D
For a long time, psychologists believed in “catharsis theory,” or the idea that it’s better to release negative emotions than hold onto them. It can feel downright delicious to vent(发泄) to your loved ones about life’s annoyances, big and small. You may think it’s healthy to complain about that annoying work assignment or rude comment, but research suggests otherwise. Venting “is the worst thing you can do” when you’ re mad, says Brad Bushman, a professor of communication at the Ohio State University who studies the topic. It’s “adding more fuel to the fire.”
Bushman demonstrated in his study that when people expressed anger, such as by hitting a punching bag(沙袋), they only got more annoyed and aggressive. That’s not good, because research suggests anger is linked to a variety of mental and maybe even physical health problems. Discussing a frustrating conversation or social slight in details can cause rumination— the psychological term for focusing on negative thoughts and feelings— and blow out of proportion relatively minor annoyances. Neither is healthy. Indeed, venting was linked to poorer mental health, while methods like accepting, joking about, and positively analyzing the situation seemed to boost well-being. “You should generally act how you hope to feel,” Bushman says. For most people, that means trying to move past anger rather than getting stuck in it.
When you feel yourself getting stuck in the situation of venting, look for healthier strategies. If yoga and meditation aren’t your thing, try a quick shift in perspective. Bushman recommends the “fly-on-the-wall” technique, which challenges angry people to imagine themselves as a third party observing the situation that made them anger. It’s healthier to look for broader meaning in an annoying situation (Think: “you can’t always get what you want”) than to focus on every last annoying detail.
“And finally, don’t underestimate the impact of hanger— that is, getting angry when you’ re hungry. It’s a real phenomenon. So next time you feel yourself gearing up for a venting session, think of grabbing a snack and taking a few deep breaths instead,” says Bushman. ______
32. Which of the following belongs to catharsis theory
A. Having a good sleep when feeling upset.
B. Talking angrily about annoying situations.
C. Forgetting about the anger and staying positive.
D. Breathing deeply when facing rude behave ours.
33. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Releasing anger is harmful to our health.
B. Hitting a punching bag can lessen anger.
C. Accepting isn’t a good way to avoid anger.
D. Complaining can remove minor annoyances.
34. What is Bushman’s suggestion
A. See things differently. B. Be forgiving and tolerant.
C. Keep in the state of hunger. D. Seek for professional advice.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. How Can We Deal with Life’s Annoyances
B. Why Not Run When Facing Annoying Situations
C. Is Venting Healthy, or Does It Make Things Worse
D. Which One Is Better, Being Active or Being Peaceful

Eating while doing something else can lead to unhealthy habits. You might consume more unhealthy food than you realize, or get into the habit of eating when you aren’t even hungry. 36 Mindful eating focuses on the why and the how of eating. There are some steps you can take to begin mindful eating.

Max and Mia were so excited to go to the city festival with their parents. They woke up early that day, put on their favorite clothes, and headed straight for the car. The anticipation was killing them!
As they drove into town, they could see flags waving in the air and hear music coming from every direction. “We’re here!” Max shouted as they pulled into a parking spot.
Mia’s eyes widened with amazement as she took in all of the sights around her. There were food stalls selling all kinds of yummy treats like cotton candy, popcorn, and ice cream. She couldn’t wait to try everything! Meanwhile, Max was already eyeing his first game booth(岗亭) where he could win a giant stuffed animal if he scored enough points throwing balls through hoops. They spent hours exploring different parts of the festival together: trying out games at carnival booths or enjoying exotic (异国风味的) dishes from food stands while hearing different types of music ranging from jazz bands to folk singers.
But then something scary happened. Max turned around to ask his mom a question when he noticed that she was no longer there. He looked around but couldn’t see her or his dad anywhere. Mia started to cry because she didn’t know what was going on.
“Where did they go ” Max asked himself as he nervously scanned the crowd for any sign of his parents. Mia clung(紧抓) to Max’s hand tightly as they walked through the busy street filled with people. “We need to find them,” Max said calmly but firmly. “Let’s try calling out for them.” They shouted at the top of their lungs, hoping that somehow their voices would reach their parents over all of the noise at the festival. But still, no answer came back from any where in sight!
As minutes stretched into what felt like hours, Max started getting really scared too— how could they ever find each other in such a huge sea of people

Just then, a kind lady approached them with a warm smile. The kind lady, introducing herself as Ms. Johnson, gently asked if everything was alright. Feeling relieved that someone noticed them, Max nodded his head eagerly while Mia clung tightly to his hand. Ms. Johnson offered to help them find their parents. “Let’s go to the information booth, where we can make an announcement and your parents can find you more easily.” Ms. Johnson suggested. Max and Mia, still holding hands, followed her through the crowd. Along the way, Ms. Johnson constantly comforted them and assured that they would find their parents. As they were nearing the information booth, suddenly they heard familiar voices calling their names.
Turning around, they saw their parents rushing towards them. “Max! Mia!” their mom exclaimed, pulling them into a tight hug. Their dad, equally relieved, knelt down to their level. “You two did the right thing by staying together and going to the information booth,” he said, his voice choked with emotion. Max told their parents how Ms. Johnson helped them. Their parents turned to her, and thanked her for helping keep an eye on their kids. Although it was scary to get separated from their parents in a crowded place like that, Max and Mia felt the warmth from the stranger and also learned a valuable lesson about staying safe when out in public places like city festivals.
