When you look up into the sky at night, have you ever felt that your eyes are deceiving you It seems that stars are moving all the time.
Actually, there’s nothing wrong with your eyes. This twinkle (闪烁的) effect is called scintillation (闪烁现象). Scintillation happens because of air movement in the earth’s atmosphere (大气). Light is “bent (弯曲)” when it travels through different parts of the earth atmosphere. As the air in the earth’s atmosphere is moving all the time, the light traveling through the atmosphere makes the stars look as if they are moving, too.
The same thing also happens to things on the ground. On a very hot and shiny day, if you look at the road, you will see that the image (影像) in the distance is not clear and things move slightly. You can also see the same effect if you drop a rock into water. The rock appears a little unclear under the moving water.
This twinkling effect causes a lot of problems for astronomers (天文学家), because they cannot observe the stars clearly. So, a telescope was needed in space so that the air movements in the atmosphere could be avoided. It took a long time to build the space telescope but finally in 1990, a huge space telescope called the Hubble Space Telescope was successfully sent into space. Since then, astronomers have made many important observations that have helped people understand space better.

Natural scenes often become the themes of poetry. Poets watch nature closely and present(呈现) its beauty in their poems. For example, poets may describe natural scenes such as a spring day or a snowy day. Besides, poets often express their feelings about nature by creating lively images(形象) in poems. With images, poets can describe the details(细节) of something colorfully. Readers, on the other hand, can connect their own experiences with the images in the poems so that they can share the poets’ ideas. Now let’s read the poem “Who Has Seen the Wind ”
When we read the lines “When the leaves hang trembling” and “When the trees bow down their heads,” they remind us of a windy day. The poet successfully creates an image of the wind by describing details of the scene. These help the readers think of the moment when the wind passes by. We might even bow our own heads, imagining that we are the trees.
In the poem “Night”, Blake describes many details of a night scene. People know very well what they can see at night, like stars or the moon. However, Blake sees more than just the moon itself; he sees the moon as a flower, smiling at us from up in the sky. So the moon is really compared to a flower and personified(拟人化) as a smiling person.

Two hundred years after Darwin’s birth, studies have found new details of his life at the University of Cambridge. Six learner-centered ledgers (账本) discovered in the university show this. 31
He lived in the most expensive rooms provided for a rich student at his time. 32 He had someone to clean his room, make his bed and take care of the fire in his bright rooms. He hired a dishwasher, a clothes washer and a man who cleaned his shoes. A tailor, hatter and barber made sure he was well presented. A chimney cleaner and a coalman kept his fire going. Christ’s College’s basic food was meat and beer. 33
Darwin’s bill topped 636 pounds during his three years of study at Cambridge. Later he described this time as the most joyful of his happy life. That large sum (金额) would have been fairly common for a student at Cambridge in the 19th century. 34
In those days, Cambridge was full of rich students living a pretty good life and Darwin was just one of them. 35 And so he had plenty of time for socializing (交际) or private study. He would be out shooting, collecting beetles, doing his scientific hobbies or visiting friends. He played cards and drank wine at night, just like students always have.
A.Thanks to the richness, he was able to hire servants to help with the daily life.
B.So he paid five and a half pence extra each day to have vegetables.
C.He enjoyed the kind of comfortable university life that most of today’s students can only dream about.
D.He had several people to help him to deal with the daily housework.
E.When you look at the ledgers, you can find there were many rich students in Cambridge.
F.The bills were paid by his wealthy father, Robert Darwin, a doctor.

After getting a master’s degree in Tsinghua University in 1944, Yang got the chance to further his studies in the United States. There he met another Chinese student, Tsung-dao Lee (李政道), who shared the same 40 . And they won the Nobel Prize in Physics because of the theory of parity non-conservation in weak interactions (弱相互作用中宇称不守恒). It made Chinese people 41 because Chinese scientists could be on the global frontier (前沿) to compete with their peers .
42 he has been, Yang Zhenning has always had his motherland in mind. Unluckily, the US government prevented Chinese scientists who got doctoral degrees from the US like Yang from 43 to China.
In 1971, Yang 44 got the chance to return to China for a visit. Later, to 45 education in China, Yang sold a house in the US, and gave all the money to Tsinghua University. In 2003, Yang returned to China and also taught at Tsinghua.
