A primary school has announced that it no longer requires parents to sign their children s
homework.
A newspaper comments: Putting an end to the requirement that parents sign the homework
of their children eases the burden on many parents, as otherwise they would have to do primary
school homework after a hard day s work. But there are worries that if parents stop signing their
children s homework, the children will not get good grades.

However, the most efficient way for children to study is to cultivate their willingness to
learn and do their own studies. When doing homework, students practice and hopefully apply
what they have learned. True teachers are supposed to check students homework and identify
their mistakes. But some parents correct their children s mistakes by themselves when signing
the homework.
It is students duty to do their homework, be responsible for their studies and correct their
mistakes. Parents supervising their homework, checking their answers and dealing with the
harder problems will only make children less aware of their mistakes and encourage them to wait
for their parents help when they face any problems.
Children have to manage their own learning and develop the ability to study by themselves,
as competence will not be achieved if a student simply repeats rigid tasks in which he is assisted
at school by teachers and at home by parents.
An experiment conducted by American psychologist Walter Mischel in the 1960s proved
that children with better self-discipline performed better in their studies and relationships.
There is little doubt that parents supervision can make children s homework better. But it
does not give children the chance to solve problems independently.
24. What can we learn about the announcement
A. Parents don t support it. B. It makes everyone pleased.
C. It makes parents worried. D. It reduces parents burdens.
25. What s the most efficient way for children to study
A. Teachers check students homework.
B. Parents sign their children s homework.
C. Children are willing to learn by themselves.
D. Parents supervise their children s homework.
26. What will happen to children if parents supervise their homework
A. They will lack confidence. B. They may feel great pressure.
C. They will be more independent. D. They may not realize their mistakes.
27. What s the author s attitude to parents signing their children s homework
A. Opposed. B. Neutral. C. Optimistic. D. Unconcerned.

After Taylor Swift, the “Mona Lisa” is probably the most recognizable female face in the
world. Every day around 20,000 people stare at the Leonardo da Vinci s painting in the Louvre.
Yet it became famous not because of a tempting semi-smile. Until a worker stole the masterpiece
in 1911, it was still mostly unknown. Viewers flooded in to see what a French newspaper called
“an enormous, horrific, gaping void(空白)” .
Classics of art, literature and music are supposed to carry some mysterious appeal that
endures across the ages. But as Rochelle Gurstein, a historian, writes in a new book, the
“ timeless classic” is anything but permanent. “ What I believed was written in stone was
actually written in water”, she argues. Classics come and go.
Take other celebrated works of art for example. Until the end of the 19th century
Michelangelo s “David” had only his fig leaf to protect him from the weather in Piazza della
Signoria in Florence. He attracted more pigeons than visitors; visitors preferred the artist s
sculpture of Moses in Rome. Before the famous “Venus de Milo” was discovered in 1820,
viewers were crazy about “Venus de Medici”, a delicate sculpture most people alive today have
never heard of.
Much as in art, the classics of music and literature have not always been set in stone either.
Today, Johann Scbastjan Bach is often regarded as the master of classical music. But after his
death in 1750, Bach s compositions fell out of fashion until Felix Mendelssohn, a German

composer, rediscovered them in the 1820s. Herman Melville s masterpiece “Moby Dick” was
largely forgotten until critics such as Raymond Weaver, a professor at Columbia University
rescued him from the depth of a nobody around the centenary of his birth in 1919.
“The status of classics” depends on critics and shows the power of passionate writers to
change the way people look at art. Tastes evolve, and they should. But culture lives on only as
long as people continue to argue over what counts as a classic today. The true enemy of the
classic is not relativism or awakening. It is silence.
28. According to the passage, what made the painting “Mona Lisa” famous
A. Its mysterious semi-smile attracted viewers.
B. It was the most recognizable female painting.
C. It was stolen and gained widespread attention.
D. A French newspaper praised its artistic value.
29. What happened to Bach s compositions after his death
A. They were forgotten for decades. B. They became widely popular.
C. They inspired many other composers. D. They were preserved by his critics.
30. What is the main factor determining the status of a classic
A. Timeless quality of the work.
B. Influence of passionate critics and writers.
C. The artist s ability to inspire debate.
D. Popular trends at the time of creation.
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. The mystery of classic works of art.
B. How cultural tastes influence classics over time.
C. The lasting appeal of famous artworks.
D. How critics create timeless masterpieces.

Three-quarters of Earth s land has become drier in recent decades due to human-caused
global warming, according to a UN report released during a desertification summit in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia. Industrial emissions of greenhouse gases are the primary driver of this trend,
which the report described as a “global, existential danger. ” Without significant efforts to halt
rising temperatures, more regions may face sand and dust storms, wildfires, water shortages,
crop failures, and desertification. Currently, nearly one-third of the global population lives in
moisture-deprived areas, up from one-fifth in 1990.
Major food-producing regions like Argentina, Spain, and the Black Sea are among those
most affected, alongside politically unstable nations like South Sudan. Every year, nearly 400,
000 square miles of productive land degrade globally. The UN Convention to Combat
Desertification, in place for 30 years, seeks to reverse this trend, but progress remains limited.
Saudi Arabia, host of the summit and the world s largest oil exporter, has a complicated
role. While it favoured international agreements to combat climate change, it has also worked to
weaken commitments to reduce fossil fuel dependency and limit plastic pollution. These actions
highlight the tension between environmental goals and economic interests.
The report outlined measures to build resilience, such as rethinking agricultural practices.
For example, regions with long histories of water scarcity, like Los Angeles, are exploring ways
to grow less water-intensive crops. However, such adaptations may prove challenging for many
large urban areas worldwide.
Drylands, which cover more than 40% of Earth s land outside Antarctica, experience
persistent moisture deficits. Europe has been particularly affected, with over 95% of its land
becoming drier in recent decades. While some regions, like Central Africa and India, may see

increased rainfall due to heavier bursts of precipitation(降水) in a warming climate, no current
drylands are expected to become consistently humid in the near future.
The report warns that the ecological impacts of the drying trend may be irreversible within
human timescales. Many organisms adapted to current conditions may not survive the rapid
changes, emphasizing the urgency of global action to address this crisis.
32. According to the UN report, what is the primary cause of the drying trend of Earth s land
A. Increased rainfall in dry regions.
B. Political instability in certain nations.
C. Industrial emissions of greenhouse gases.
D. Agricultural practices in drylands.
33. What does “moisture-deprived” most likely mean in the passage
A. Lacking adequate rainfall or water.
B. Experiencing occasional drought.
C. Losing water due to poor soil quality.
D. Gaining excessive moisture from heavy rains.
34. What can be inferred about the global drying trend s impact on ecosystems
A. Ecosystems will quickly adapt to rapid climate changes.
B. Ecosystems will remain unaffected due to long-term resilience.
C. Most organisms will migrate to less affected regions.
D. Ecosystems in drylands may not survive the fast changes.
35. What is the main focus of the UN report
A. Global warming s effects on food production.
B. The impact of human-caused global warming on land dryness.
C. Saudi Arabia s role in combating climate change.
D. Strategies for improving water conservation.

When it comes to WeChat profile pictures, many Chinese people avoid using their face
photos. There are several reasons.
Privacy is a priority to consider. Chinese people are vigilant ( 警 惕) about protecting
personal information. They fear strangers might misuse their face photos, perhaps in
advertisements or for creating false identities. 36 . Therefore they are extremely cautious as
they don t want their pictures exploited without permission.
37 . Influenced by traditional Chinese culture, people are rather reserved in self-
presentation. They prefer expressing themselves subtly rather than via face photos. Also, they
are concerned about others opinions and wish to avoid negative remarks about their appearance.
38 . They think showing faces may draw excessive attention and criticism.
Psychological factors play a part. Some individuals lack confidence in their looks and
believe other images can better convey their inner qualities. Using non-face photos can add an
air of mystery and make them more appealing in social interactions. 39 .
Habits and traditions also matter. In the early days of the Chinese Internet, platforms like
QQ provided default avatars(头像) . Unlike Western platforms with a strong real-name culture,
Chinese ones offer more flexibility. 40 . This has influenced the choice of profile pictures,
allowing people toselect avatars according to their preferences rather than being restricted to face
photos. It makes them more likely to choose symbolic pictures. They thus have more freedom to
use other pictures as avatars.

Frank, a six-year-old boy, was interested in playing piano, so his mother found him a
tutor. He showed great passion at the very beginning. However, bored with day-after-day
practice, Frank couldn t tolerate sitting at the piano. Sometimes when he was required to play a
bit difficult melodies, the results were not exactly graceful flowing music, even though he tried
his best. Gradually, his enthusiasm began to fade away.
Wishing to encourage her young son s progress on the piano, his mother took the boy to a
Paderewski concert. When they reached the entrance of the theatre where the concert was held,
they saw a crowd of music lovers stream into the hall. The little boy was awed by what he saw
and he felt a little thrilled. They then walked in with the crowds and found their places. After
they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet
her.
Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose to his
feet and eventually explored his way through a door marked “NO ADMITTANCE. ” When the
house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and
discovered that the child was missing. The mother glanced around the hall and her little son was
nowhere to be seen. Feeling desperate and trembling with fear, she fished in the bag for her
phone and was about to call the police when suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused
on the impressive Steinway (斯坦威钢琴)on stage.
Paragraph 1 The mother saw her little boy sitting at the key-board, playing Twinkle,
Twinkle Little Star.
Paragraph 2 At that moment, Paderewski made his entrance and sat beside the boy,
whispering “Don t quit. Keep playing. ”
