Eight engineering enthusiasts from the Netherlands have built the world’s longest bicycle. Measuring an incredible 55.16 metres, it’s around the same length as two blue whales. The previous record was set in 2020 by Bernie Ryan (Australia), whose bike measured 47.5 metres.
The team was led by 39-year-old Ivan Schalk, who’s been planning this since he was a child. He said, “I’ve been thinking about the idea for years. I once received a Guinness World Records book in which I came across this record.” This record has been broken numerous times over the past 60 years. It was first set in 1965 by a bicycle built in Cologne, Germany, measuring 8 metres.
With a history of building decorations on floats, Ivan started this project in 2018 to fill his spare time. Needing help to build the giant bicycle, he sought out team members at the local carnival in his home village of Prinsen Beek. “Prinsenbeek is known for its volunteers and for having many people who can do skilled jobs,” Ivan said. “You can hang out in front of the TV, but we’re not like that here in Prinsenbeek. We have the technical knowledge and want to apply this knowledge to the maximum.”
Building the bicycle was a long process. The front and back parts were produced in-house, while the centerpiece was purchased from a company that produces long steel structures. For the purposes of this record, a bicycle is defined as a pedaled(踏板的) vehicle with two wheels, one behind the other, steered (驾驶) with handlebars attached to the front wheel.
Years of calculations and construction finally led to the official record try, where two of the team——one up front steering and another at the back pedaling - rode the bicycle over a 100-metre distance to achieve the Guinness World Records title. They also achieved another record for the longest tandem (多人的) bicycle by adding more pedals and completing the distance with multiple riders.
24.What inspired Ivan Schalk to start the project of building the world’s longest bicycle
A.A dream since his childhood after reading a book.
B.The need for a new means of transportation.
C.An assignment given by his engineering class.
D.A challenge initiated by another engineer.
25.Which of the following can best describe the people of Prinsen Beek
A.Lazy and unproductive. B.Selfish and uncooperative.
C.Well-trained and noble-minded. D.Technically-skilled and community-minded.
26.What can we know about the bicycle built by Ivan Schalk’s team
A.It measures 47.5 metres. B.It was entirely handmade.
C.It took little time to complete. D.It can be ridden by two persons.
27.Where might this text be taken from
A.A news report. B.A travel magazine. C.A scientific journal. D.A science fiction.

You may have bought a drink recently and noticed something odd: the once removable cap is now tethered(拴住) to the bottle by a small piece of plastic. In July, the EU made a new policy, requiring that all single-use bottles have caps that remain attached. This is one of several policies designed to limit the amount of plastic litter——particularly the caps from single-use plastic bottles which are far more likely to find their way into the environment and bring a big risk to wildlife.
Producers have included the tether on bottles sold across the European market, including in the UK. It is time everyone got on board. In my opinion, this tiny adjustment is the first effective anti-littering policy that contemporary politics has come up with. The design of a product affects how readily it becomes litter, and this is especially true for bottle caps. Tethered caps are not easily removed from plastic bottles——they are difficult to throw away even if someone wants to.
Plastic bottle caps are now among the top ten litter items found in rivers and the ocean. In the UK, 2023 beach surveys listed bottle caps as the third most common type of litter, while on the Dutch North Sea coastline, surveys recorded up to 128 bottle caps for each kilometer of beach in 2016.
It is worth noting that recycling has never been a realistic solution to the overproduction of plastic. Legislation (立法) could solve some of the issues coming from tethered lids(附着瓶盖). The UK aims to establish a national bottle return system, and will need new systems for handling mixed-material recycling anyway (not only bottles and lids, but coffee cups, tetra packs and straws, among other items). Elsewhere, legislation could soon fine producers that fail to address the environmental consequences of the packaging they have made.
Trying to solve littering by asking the public to stop is not working. Tethered bottle caps are a refreshing idea that puts the onus on those pumping out millions of litter-able items in the first place. This means that the duty to reduce litter falls on the companies that produce these items, rather than just on individuals to clean up after them.
28.What is the purpose of the EU policy requiring tethered caps on single-use bottles
A.To reduce plastic litter. B.To increase recycling rates.
C.To standardize bottle design. D.To promote the use of reusable bottles.
29.How does the author develop his argument in paragraph 3
A.By listing figures. B.By making a comparison.
C.By analyzing cause and effect. D.By following the order of time.
30.What does the underlined word “onus” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Stress. B.Responsibility. C.Punishment. D.Initiative.
31.What is the best title for this text
A.The Problem with Plastic Bottle Caps B.The Failure of Public Littering Efforts
C.The EU’s New Bottle Cap Policy D.The Importance of Mixed-Material Recycling

The twelve new restaurants added to the Michelin Guide this month will be drinking to their success. Being in the guidebook of a former tire company that now reviews restaurants is the first step to getting a Michelin star, which is the most desired prize in high-quality dining. Yet according to a research recently published in the Strategic Management Journal, a source of culinary (烹饪的) intelligence, restaurants might be better off remaining starless.
Daniel Sands of University College London’s school of management tracked the fortunes of restaurants that opened in New York in 2000–2014 and received a starred review in the New York Times. He found that, of this promising group, establishments which went on to get a Michelin star were more likely to close down in the years that followed than those which did not. The relationship remained even when factors such as location, price and type of cuisine were taken into account. All told, 40% of restaurants awarded Michelin stars in 2005 – 2014 had closed by the end of 2019.
A Michelin star boosts publicity: the study found that Google search intensity rose by over a third for newly starred restaurants. But that fame comes at a price. First, Mr Sands argues, the restaurants’ customers change. Being in the center of public attention raises diners’ expectations. Meeting guests’ greater demands piles on new costs. Second, the award puts a star-shaped target on the restaurants’ back. Businesses they deal with, such as ingredient suppliers and landlords, use the opportunity to charge more. Chefs also want their pay to show they’ve won an award and might get taken away by other businesses.
Food is not the only industry where awards are a mixed blessing. Some research says that companies with bosses who won awards don’t do as well as they used to or as well as other companies whose bosses didn’t win awards. Like Michelin-starred chefs, superstar CEOs demand fatter pay packets and are more easily distracted(分心), spending more time writing books. In publishing, too, awards bring danger. Prizewinning books are reviewed more strictly than before their success, and worse than runners-up.
32.What is the first step towards receiving a Michelin star
A.Winning a food award.
B.Being recommended by a tyre-maker.
C.Being listed in the Michelin guidebook.
D.Receiving a starred review in the New York Times.
33.What did Daniel Sands’ research suggest about restaurants that received a Michelin star
A.They had better food quality. B.They were more likely to boom.
C.They had higher customer satisfaction. D.They were more likely to close down.
34、What’s the main idea of paragraph 3
A、How to win Mioholin star. B、 How restaurants boost publicity.
C、The cost of gaining Micholin star. D.Micholin star’s influence on restaurants.
35、What can we infer from the last paragraph
A、Awards may have negative efforts. B.Food industries benefit from awards.
C.Michelin-starred chefs are the best. D.CEOs with awards are more successful.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Many people are never taught etiquette (礼节) rules around great sorrow or how to talk about death、which can lead to some unfortunate mistakes. Expressing comfort in the right way is not an easy thing for you. Remember, first and foremost: People who are feeling sorrow need to be engaged with kindness and sympathy、 36 Then, find better alternatives that offer true concern and support. Here are a few important blanket guidelines.
Don’t use platitudes(陈词滥调). Think: common sayings like “sending thoughts and prayers” or “everything will work out for the best.” 37 Instead, aim for sympathetic connections that are sincere, heartfelt words individualized to that person.
Do tailor your statement to the relationship. 38 For instance, someone who has lost a parent may need to hear something a little different than someone who lost a high school friend. When someone is experiencing intense sorrow, you shouldn’t try to “fix” it or explain it. Say this instead: “Tell me about him/ her.”
39 It’s perfectly fine to say something like, “I don’t know what to say right now, but I’m so sorry for your loss.” Empathy (共情) is a powerful form of support. You can just be here with them in this moment.
Do apologize if necessary. Even when you go into it with the best of intentions, there are some mistakes people often make when talking about sorrow. For example, when you understandably want to love and support them, but your words don’t always come across as supportive or comforting as they mean them to be. Mistakes and misunderstandings are unavailable. 40
A.Do admit you are nervous.
B.Above all, figure out common phrases to avoid.
C.Do tell you know what they are going through.
D.Don’t claim that you fully know what they are going through.
E.The key is to face them, offer an apology and do better next time.
F.These types of impersonal messages can make the sufferer feel dismissed and unheard.
G.Acknowledge the relationship that the sorrowful person had to the person who has passed on.

It was a cold November night. The air was fresh, and the autumn leaves made a pattern of red and yellow on the streets. I was walking home from school, my mind lost in thoughts of upcoming exams, when I noticed an elderly man struggling with a heavy box at the corner of the street. He was out of breath, his face flushed (红) from the effort, and it was clear he needed help.
I approached him, my heart filled with sympathy. “Sir, do you need some assistance ” I asked, trying to sound as polite as possible. The man looked up, his eyes meeting mine with a mix of relief and gratitude.
“Could you please help me carry this box to my apartment It’s just around the corner,” he replied, his voice shaky but warm. I nodded and, together, we lifted the box and began our slow journey to his home.
As we walked, I learned that his name was Mr. Chen, and he had recently moved into the neighborhood. His children lived far away, and he was trying to settle into his new home alone. The box contained his most treasured belongings, books and photographs that held memories of a lifetime.
Our path was not easy. The box was heavy, and the streets were wet from rain. We slipped once or twice, but we managed to keep our footing and our spirits high. Mr. Chen told me stories of his youth, and I shared my dreams for the future. It was a strange connection, formed in the struggle of a single moment.
Finally, we reached his apartment building, and I helped him carry the box up the stairs. He insisted that I come in for a cup of tea as a thank-you. Over hot drinks, I told him that all of my family members are literature enthusiasts. My uncle works at a publishing house. He said he loves writing poetry. Despite my inability to be there with you, I hope you do really well in the contest.

第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
As I left, Mr. Chen handed me a pile of papers, on which were poems from his youth. I thanked him, putting the papers into my bag with a promise to read them later. Back at home, I carefully read through the poems, feeling a deep admiration for their beauty and sincerity. I was deeply moved by the raw emotion and the beauty captured in each verse. I eagerly recommended them to my uncle, who worked at a publishing house. He was equally impressed by the poems and immediately contacted booksellers, discussing the possibility of publishing Mr. Chen’s collection.
Upon hearing this good news, I contacted Mr. Chen to inquire if he would be willing to publish it. He was overcome with joy, his voice trembling as he expressed his gratitude. He had never imagined that his lifelong passion for poetry would lead to such an opportunity. With the support of my uncle and the enthusiasm of the booksellers, Mr. Chen’s poems began to take shape as a beautiful collection, ready to be shared with the world. It was a heartwarming reminder that even in the simplest of moments, we can make a lasting impact on others’ lives.

Text 10
Have you ever tried to hide your emotions from someone during a conversation Maybe you’re surprised that the color of your face can tell the truth.
Scientists from Ohio State University studied pictures of people’s facial expressions. They found every facial expression has a unique color pattern. For example, happiness makes our faces red around the cheeks. Hate creates a blue-yellow color around the lips, but also a red-green color around the nose and forehead. But this raises a question: Is it the color alone, or also facial expressions, that can help people tell others’ emotions To figure this out, scientists added color patterns to pictures of faces that showed no facial expressions later. They asked volunteers to tell what emotions the faces were showing. Volunteers were able to tell the emotions 75 percent of the time. This might explain why there are some sayings that connect emotions to the color of one’s face. For example, when a person is very angry, we’d say he is blue in the face.
