“Five, four, three, two, one, blast off.” At 0:23 on October 16, 2021, China launched(发射) the manned spaceship Shenzhou-13, sending three astronauts to its Tiangong space station. About 6.5 hours after the launch, the spaceship successfully docked (对接) with the Tianhe core module of the station.
The three-person team is the second crew(工作组) to have entered Tiangong. The team is led by China’s first spacewalker Zhai Zhigang. The other two astronauts are Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu. They will live and work together at the station for six months. This will be China’s longest-ever manned mission(任务).
During their six-month stay, the crew will carry out a number of tasks. For example, they will do two to three spacewalks to fix equipment(装备) in preparation for future construction work. Wang Yaping, the first Chinese woman to perform spacewalk, said “Apart from the tasks we also hope to do more space science education. This will bring space closer to the general public. As a result, they will learn more about the astronauts’ life in space.”
Shenzhou-13 was China’s last major space mission in 2021. Another six missions are planned for this year to finish the construction of the space station. Once its completed, Tangong will be about one-fifth the size of the Internaional Space Station (ISS). The ISS will reach the end of its life in 2024. Tiangong is likely to be the only operational near-Earth orbit(近地轨道) space station by then. China looks forward to hosting astronauts from other countries.

Time to go home
The six-month stay for Chinese astronauts in the Tiangong space station will end soon. They face one last test-returning home safely. What needs to be done before they leave the station.
To go home after a long journey, you have to pack up. Besides their personal belongings (物品), astronauts also need to bring home experimental data and samples (样品) for further research on Earth.
The three astronauts also need to clean “the house”. They must collect leftover food and santiary (卫生) waste and waste from experiments. The waste is put into the orbital module (轨道舱), which burns up as it re-enters Earth’s atmosphere (大气层).
The astronauts must also put equipment back in place. It will be more than a month before the Shenzhou XIV astronauts enter Tiangong. They need to make sure that things like gym equipment are fixed to the walls for safety.
Astronauts experience microgravity (微重力) for long periods of time. This affects their bodies. They lose fluids (体液), their muscles atrophy (萎缩) and they lose bone strength. To ensure a safe return, they three astronauts do exercises to keep themselves strong.
Tiangong space station will be completed before the end of this year. Six astronauts will be sent there for the Shenzhou XIV and XV missions. The Shenzhou XV crew (全体成员) will fly to the station around the year’s end to meet their Shenzhou XIV colleagues (同事).

Eating food is enjoyable, but cooking can be challenging. For those who don’t have basic cooking skills, or are too busy working or traveling, one thing can save them — instant (即食的) noodles.
This year marks the 61st anniversary of the invention of instant noodles. Ever since they were created by Japanese businessman Momofuku Ando in 1958, instant noodles have been popular around the world. In China, the product has almost become a necessity for those who travel by train.
There are some fun facts about instant noodles: The total length of the noodles in one package is 51 meters. The first instant noodles were considered a luxury product. When they first came to Japanese supermarkets in 1958, they were six times the cost of fresh udon noodles (乌冬面). Japanese people even voted instant noodles as one of their best inventions of the 20th century.
For instant noodles, as well as many other “instant” foods, convenience is the key selling point. They are supposed to make our lives easier.
Food trends (趋势) often reflect changes in society. For example, in wars, soldiers eat compressed biscuits and canned meat because they don’t need to cook these foods. And in the 1960s, frozen dinners of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables became popular in the US. This is because more women started working and had no time to cook.
In recent years, however, online meal-ordering services have brought challenges to instant foods. Uber Eats is a popular app of this kind in the United States. In China, we have Ele.me, Dianping and Meituan. These services offer not only convenience, but also more choices and tastier food. According to the World Instant Noodle Association, instant noodle sales dropped by 17 percent in China as of 2016.
This might show that Chinese people are now more interested in having higher-quality diets and not just simply filling their bellies, experts say.
17.Which country did instant noodles start from
A.The UK. B.The US. C.China. D.Japan.
18.Which of the following is NOT the fun fact of instant noodles
A.The total length of the noodles in one package is 51 meters.
B.The usage of online meal-ordering services reduce the sales of instant noodles.
C.The first instant noodles were much more expensive than fresh udon noodles.
D.Japanese people even voted instant noodles as one of the best inventions of the 20th century.
19.What does the underlined word “luxury” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.奢侈的 B.必须的 C.营养丰富的味的
20.What can we infer from the passage
A.Everyone who travels by train takes instant noodles in China.
B.In 2016, only 17% of Chinese people bought instant noodles.
C.Many American women didn’t like cooking food in the 1960s.
D.Chinese people are interested in having higher-quality diets now.
The journey to the moon had been the first step towards future exploration in space. The distance between the Moon and Earth is very short indeed when compared with the distance between Earth and the other planets. Mars, the nearest planet to Earth is millions of miles away! Travelling to the planets will be man’s next aim. Such travels will be more challenging than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous (冒险的).
Recently, two American spaceships Vikings 1 and 2, landed on Mars trying to discover whether that planet has any life on it. So far the signs of life on Mars have neither confirmed (证实) nor ruled out (排除). Russians have discovered that the surface of Venus (金星) is so hot that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is extremely dense (稠密的) and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Scientists believe man may find planets which have the same conditions as the those we have on Earth, but man should realize Earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and care for it.

Australia is one of the largest island countries in the world. It is a little smaller than China. It is in the south of the earth. Australia is big, but its population is small. The population of Australia is early as large as that of Shanghai.
Enough laws(法律)have been made to fight against pollution. The cities in Australia have got little air or water pollution. The sky is blue and the water is clean. You can clearly see fish swimming in the rivers. Plants grow very well, too.
Last month we visited Perth, the biggest city in Western Australia, and went to a wild flower exhibition. There we saw a large number of wild flowers we had never seen before. We had a wonderful time. Perth is famous for its beautiful wild flowers. In spring, Perth has the wild flower exhibition. After visiting Perth, we spent a day in the countryside. We sat down and had a rest near a path at the foot of a hill. It was quiet and we enjoyed ourselves. Suddenly we heard bells ringing at the top of the hill. What we saw made us pick up all our things and run back to the car as quickly as we could. There were about three hundred sheep coming towards us down the path.

“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with Father standing on one side, and I on the other side.
We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed Father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.
The street lights were shining, causing rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.
A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree.
But now... I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions and codes of behaviour on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I wandered in the streets and didn’t know where to go. My heart was cold on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights with me. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself: “Is Father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me ”
Perhaps, Dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can’t stand his outrageous (蛮横的) words.
All the lights were off except Father’s.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of walking quietly into my room in my sleep and then tucking(把……裹住) me underneath the covers.
This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong ” I whispered, maybe... With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist (存在) at all. Love—is second to none.

So, it’s exam time again. Have you done the necessary work to get good marks Sleeping with the textbook under the pillow doesn’t work. The best way is to space your practice out, rather than cram(塞满)it all together. Just as a scientist called Tom Stafford advises, if you organize five hours of study into one hour a day, you’ll remember more than if you study for five hours on one day.
Don’t depend on memory alone. Get pens and paper, and start working! Students who can test themselves earlier will be better at retrieving(检索)the knowledge from the memory and keep it in the long run. John Dunlosky, suggests that “you start by reading a textbook with your favourite pens and colours, and then write down the important ideas on small cards. While doing so you actually try to test yourselves on them.”
Good revision should give you confidence, but if you are still worried, it’s not harmful to follow some special customs. In Japan, it seems to be a tradition for students to eat Katsudon before a test. This is a bowl of rice with egg and pork pieces. The name of the dish reminds people of the word “katsu”, meaning “winning”. For some students in South Korea, the key to success is not washing their hair before an exam, because they believe they could wash all the knowledge out of their heads. And in different countries there are always those who swear by their “lucky underwear”.
The bottom line is that you need to study, eat a good meal, sleep well on the eve of the test, and believe in their “lucky underwear”.
Good luck in your exam!
38.When you “space your practice out”, you ________.

A Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty
The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.
The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero(主人公) was separated at an early age. It also talks about love, getting on with others, being persistent (坚持不懈的) and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him, “You are not like a kid following instructions any more. You are diving like a young
man who knows where he is going.”
The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents (养父母). Yet he also has the qualities to take himself on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake stone, James’ parents, his diving coach, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.
The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity (辨认) of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil (化石), “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie.” It was written on a letter with parts of an address still there.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote county village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. He finally meets his mother, Anne, and comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery, The Snake Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. On June 17th, 2021, the Shenzhou XII manned spacecraft went into space. It took three Chinese astronauts Nie Haisheng, the astronauts came back to the earth. On September 17th, the astronauts came back to the earth. The return capsule(返回舱) touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in Inner Mongolia.
Before heading home, the astronauts first prepared their bodies. They did exercises to train their muscles, bones and hearts to prepare for coming into the atmosphere(大气层).
During the journey, the astronauts experienced radio blackouts after getting into the atmosphere because of too much heat. This means the astronauts could not talk with the ground for several minutes. But thanks to the radar, scientists on the ground still knew where the spacecraft was.
When the spacecraft was about 10 kilometers above the ground, it still travelled at 200 meters per second. That’s twice the speed of high-speed trains! Their parachutes(降落伞)helped the spacecraft in its return. It slowed the speed down to 7 to 8 meters per second. These special parachutes were made in China.
The three astronauts carried out two spacewalks and set up equipment(设备)outside the station. They also did a number of scientific experiments (实验)and tests. Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories, he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people.
Born in 1881 to a wealthy family, Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893, however, his father, a senior government official, was put into prison for taking money. At the same time, his father became seriously ill. From that time on, his family was no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing.
By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899, he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books, although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was in need of money.
After working for several years as a teacher in Beijing, Lu Xun again returned to writing. In 1918, he wrote his famous short story Diary of a Madman. It was the first Chinese novel published using the everyday language that people spoke, which helped make it a great success. This, together with his novel The True Story of Ah Q (1921) made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer. Although successful, Lu Xun still worried greatly about China’s future. In 1927, he moved to Shanghai and gave up writing stories in order to devote himself to what he called “pen warfare”. He only wrote articles which called on the people to fight against the government. For this, the government stopped him from publishing any more books. He was forced to write his articles using false names.

Tanitoluwa Adewumi, known as Tani, is a boy from Africa. On 10 March, 2019, the 8-year-old boy beat 73 other kids and became a state champion(冠军)for his age group at the New York State Chess Championship. But the boy, who was homeless at that time, just started learning to play chess in 2018.
Tani and his family arrived in New York from Nigeria in 2017. A church pastor(牧师)helped place the family of four in a homeless shelter. Soon after, Tani entered the primary school. Here the gifted boy was first introduced to chess by a part-time teacher Makofsky, owner of a chess club. Attracted by the game, the boy asked his mother to allow him to join the club. She emailed Makofsky because they didn’t have enough money to pay for the chess classes. To her surprise and joy, Makofsky agreed to waive all costs for Tani.
Though the chess club helps, it’s largely believed that Tani’s success lies in his hard work. The boy practises the game for many hours a day on the floor with his board. Every Saturday, Tani goes to a free 3-hour class to improve his game skills.
Not surprisingly, Tani’s story, first reported by the New York Times, has brought him great support from the American public. Soon after the young boy won the New York Chess Championship. Makofsky began a GoFundMe activity for Tani and his family so that he could continue his chess journey. It raised $200, 000 in just ten days, far more than they expected. Have you ever heard voices from the universe What secrets lurk(潜藏)in the signals of pulsars(脉冲星)Y 16, 000 light-years from Earth Our eyes may not be able to explore these distant mysteries.
China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope(望远镜)(FAST), commonly known as “Sky Eye”, the world’s largest single-aperture(单口径)radio telescope, officially opened to the world on March 31.
The giant telescope is the size of 30 soccer fields. “Before FAST was put into use, China’s radio telescopes usually had a diameter of fewer than 50 meters,” said Wang Qiming, FAST’s chief technologist, “ FAST marks a huge leap(飞跃)forward” Not only is the telescope leading in size, but it’s also leading in terms of sensitivity(敏感度).
FAST is about 2.5 times as sensitive as the second-largest telescope in the world, the Arecibo, Observatory in Puerto Rico, reported Shine, a Shanghai-based media platform. That is to say, if you make a phone call from the moon, it can detect the signal, according to CNR News.
Since its completion in September 2016, it has found more than 300 pulsars(脉冲星)-objects thought to be rapidly rotating neutron(中子)stars that emits(发射)regular pulses(脉冲)of radio waves. To date, FAST has expanded(扩大)four times the volume of the space range that radio telescopes can effectively explore, which means that scientists can discover more unknown cosmic(宇宙的)phenomena(现象), according to Shine.
Experts believe “Sky Eye” will surprise us in the future. “FAST has the potential(潜力)to detect signals from thousands of superior planets. Maybe aliens with much more advanced technologies live there,” Li Di, told China Daily.
“TAST may well be the instrument(仪器)enabling great discoveries, perhaps even discoveries that will earn Nobel or other, significant prizes” Sheldon Glashow, winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics, told China Daily. He also has high expectations(期望)for FAST.
Now “Sky Eye” has changed from “China’s eye” to the world’s eye”. About 10 percent of FAST’s observation(观测)time in the first year, roughly 450 hours(分配)to foreign scientists, said Li Di.
“FAST provides astronomical(天文的)capabilities not available anywhere else in the world. Astronomers and physicists who need those capabilities will surely take advantage of China’s generosity in making the tools widely available, Joseph Taylor Jr., told China Daily.
