At 10, by chance I heard Whitney Houston’s song titled “I will always love you”, which made a great deep impression on me though I didn’t understand what I heard. I kept trying to repeat the song but in vain; because I didn’t speak English, I tried to remember the melody only in order not to forget the song because maybe one day I’ll come to know this song’s title.
About five years later and by chance again I bought a cassette that included the song. It was amazing that I found what I was looking for! Then I started to listen to my local radio stations which aired English songs. Then, with time going by, I started to understand a few words. Of course I was a secondary school student at that time but I want you to know that what was driving me is love, the love of that language.
After I was grown up a little bit I decided to study English Literature at the university, because I said to myself this is the best subject I’ve been good at during my school life. And that’s what happened; I studied English Literature at university and graduated recently.
My native-like speaking didn’t develop because of the university education, but from hard work and self-study. I used to listen to native speakers almost all the time and imitate (模仿) their pronunciation. And I had to repeat and practice even with myself. You know, I didn’t have a person to speak English with. So I decided to chat with English people on the Internet.
Finally, one of the best ways to improve your English is using it. Use it or lose it.
21.What does the underlined phrase “in vain” in paragraph 1 mean
A.For no reason. B.In no time.
C.Without success. D.At no cost.
22.What made the author study English Literature at university
A.The influence of local radio stations. B.Success in learning English.
C.A deep love for the language. D.Desire to be like a native speaker.
23.How did the author achieve the native-like speaking
①By listening to native speakers. ②By imitating native speakers.
③By speaking English repeatedly. ④By taking university courses.
⑤By practising with a partner. ⑥By chatting with native speakers.
A.①②③⑥ B.①②⑤⑥ C.②③④⑤ D.②③⑤⑥

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages. English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible; but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
24.According to the passage, ________.
A.boxing rings should be round B.there should be an egg in an eggplant
C.sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things D.pineapples are the apples on the pine tree
25.Which of the following is the correct plural
A.Beeth. B.Geese. C.Meese. D.Tooth.
26.Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning
A.Quite a lot and quite a few. B.Overlook and oversee.
C.A wise man and a wise guy. D.Hot as hell and cold as hell.
27.Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ________.
A.curious B.crazy C.confident D.clever

Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world — Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey — rats will soon be man’s new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake We send in rescue dogs, why Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat .
How does it work First, the rat is trained to smell people. when this happens, the rat’ brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’ s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell university, New York, says,“ Robots, noses don’ t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project ” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’ t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
28.Why will rats become popular in the world earthquake capitals

Every year thousands of high school seniors walk across the stage in caps and gowns and get their high school diplomas. Every college student knows how bittersweet this achievement is. Here are some wise words that every high school graduate needs to hear before going to college.
36
When you get to college, you may feel like you have no cares in the world. 37 Your parents aren’t there to be your reminder anymore, so now, it’s all on you. Even when it’s a beautiful day outside, and you’d rather be anywhere else, go to class. College is an expensive investment. Therefore, you shouldn’t let your parents’ money go to waste.
Eat healthily.
College and pizza may go hand in hand, but your body needs more than pizza to function correctly. Don’t forget to add some greens to your diet and eat a salad now and then. 38 . If you’re lucky enough to have a mini-fridge in your room, pack it with tuna packets and small servings of cut-up fruit and vegetables. Don’t forget to drink lots of water and stay hydrated.
Be kind-hearted.
There’s a quote that goes, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” Show kindness and be friendly to everyone, from the cafeteria. staff to the faculty and your fellow students. If you’re shy, showing a smile will work until you get the nerve to say hi. 39 Recognize that you’re in a new experience and won’t know everything, and that’s okay. All you can do is try your best and learn along the way.
Don’t forget to call your mom.
That you’re not living in your parents’ house anymore doesn’t mean they won’t worry about you. 40 Moms especially tend to worry when they don’t hear from you. It would be best to text or call them every couple of days so they won’t worry. You could include your dad in your text so he won’t feel left out.
A.Go to class.
B.Take morning classes.
C.However, that’s not the case.
D.Also, don’t forget to be kind to yourself.
E.Try your best to eat some healthy snacks.
F.You’ll realize that your parents only want the best for you.
G.In fact, they may worry more because they don’t see you as often.

附:听力原文:
1.W: Hey, did you know there are so many languages in the world
M: Yeah, I heard there are about 7,000 languages. Isn’t that amazing
W: That’s a lot! I think learning different languages can help us understand other cultures better.
M: Yes! It’s like opening a window to new worlds.
2.M: Hi Mary, I’m on the train for a business trip. I won’t be able to meet you in town this afternoon. I’m afraid I have to work late. Really sorry.
W: That’s Okay Mike, let’s arrange something for next week.
3.W: Peter, what do you think of the speech I think it’s inspiring.
M: I don’t find it inspiring at all. Quite the contrary, I just want it to be over with.
4.W: When will you leave for the station
M: The train leaves at 4:30. I plan to arrive there forty minutes before it leaves. So, I’ll have enough time to have my ticket checked.
5.M: Is this your first time in New Orleans
W: No, I came here from Jackson last year. On the way back, I went to Baton Rouge to visit my sister. She moved there two years ago.
M: Nice. I love the city.
6-7.W: Hi, David. What would you like to be when you leave school
M: I have no idea. But my cousin is a sailor in the navy. He sent me postcards from the ports where the ship stops. It’s exciting.
W: Are you going to be a sailor then
M: Well, I don’t think it’s a good job for me.
W: What do you think of my job, teaching
M: It’s quite boring. I would prefer to work as a journalist.
8-9.M: What will you do while you’re in Rome
W: I’d like to visit the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain.
M: Anything else
W: Well, also that tower that leans to the side.
M: You mean the Leaning Tower of Pisa
W: Yes.
M: Well, that isn’t in Rome. It’s in a town called Pisa. If you’re going to travel anywhere outside of Rome, I suggest Venice instead. You’d like it a lot because you can travel around in boats there.
W: I’m only in the country for a week, though. Would I have time to get to Venice
M: I think you could spend two days in Venice and the rest in Rome.
W: Great! I’ll do that.
10-12.M: Mrs. Smart, where is Turkey on the map in our geography book

M: My mom told me about the recent earthquake there. I was sad about the news.
W: It is terrible. Lots of people suffered from the damage, but there were some positive aspects that we can take from it.
M: Like what
W: People from all over the world came to help.
M: I didn’t know that.
W: Yes. For example, rescue (救援) teams from England and Australia helped find people trapped (困住) under buildings.
M: They are all heroes.
W: They certainly are.
13-16.W: Do you think I should go to college, Mike
M: Of course, Brenda! Why not
W: Well, my friend Landon started his own computer software business right out of high school. He didn’t go to college, and he made a million dollars!
M: OK, congratulations to him. But that success story is not common. People should receive as much education as they could.
W: But college is so expensive nowadays. When my brother Jason went to school, his fees were maybe twenty thousand dollars a year. His same school is charging twice that amount now!
M: That’s nothing! New York University costs much more!
W: See! That’s what I mean! Is it really worth the money
M: Listen, I agree that education is too expensive, but college life is such a beautiful part of one’s life. Besides, students can borrow money from the bank.
