In some parts of the world, children don’t have enough food or money. Every year at Sun-shine Middle School, we do something to raise money for them. This year we will have a big event— A Market Day.
The Market Day falls on July 8. We are going to make our student centre look like a big shopping centre! People can come at any time from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and buy everything from clothes to books, cakes and flowers.
Lesson 25 Raising Money
Luckily, many volunteers will help us prepare for the big event. Last year, Ms. Grant and Ms. Alice made some wonderful cakes for our charity event.
They will do it again this year. Bill Thomas will visit the book shop and music shop, and ask the shops to give us things to sell. Philip White will e-mail all the teachers and ask them to come to our event. Jane Brown will put the news online to tell that the event is open to everyone.
However, there is more to do, and we need your help. We want you to offer us things like old books, old clothes and anything that we can sell to raise money for poor children. If you live in the United States, the law says you can’t have a full -time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part - time after school or on weekends, and during summer vacation you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn your own money Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Lesson 30 A Cookie Sale
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena,13, makes money by knitting ( 织 ) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbours, and Mary said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Lesson 30 A Cookie Sale
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.

Lesson 26 Cookies, Please!
Ⅴ. 阅读表达。
Zheng Lin is a middle school student in Hebei. Earlier this month, Zheng Lin and his friends stood on the street with a box to ask people for donations (捐款). Later they gave the money to the poor students in their school.
Chinese teenagers raise money with a group.Usually, they ask for donations on the street or in the park. And they sell things like their old books and clothes. They really do a great job. The money usually helps the children in poor areas with new clothes, pens and pencils. It also helps some sick children with their medicine.
Lesson 26 Cookies, Please!
Teenagers in the US make donations, too. But they raise money in a different way — by doing something for others. For example, they sell home-made food or have music concerts in their neighbourhood to raise money.
Chinese students like to wait for people to donate, or sell their things to raise money. They can help people in need and also show their love to the world. The US kids get donations and give people something useful in return (作为回报). In this way, they can show their talents and practice getting on with others. More importantly, they have to work hard to get a donation.

Ⅲ. 阅读理解。
An idiom has a meaning different from the meaning of each word in it. Today we are looking at some idioms about“air”.
To be in the air If spring is “in the air”,it’s about to happen:“The birds are singing and it feels a little warmer — spring is exactly in the air.” To be walking on air
It means to be very excited and happy because something good has happened to you. When she found out she would be a mother, she was walking on air.
Lesson 27 Business English
To be up in the air If a question or decision is “up in the air”, it is still not sure what is going to happen, and no decision has been taken. Here is an example. “They told me I might need to work in the UK soon, but at the moment the decision is still up in the air.” To clear the air
If a discussion “clears the air”, it makes all the
bad feelings go away because it gives everyone a chance to talk about their problems. For example, things had been tense (紧张) in the office for a long time, but the meeting we had last night really cleared the air.
