As a clueless freshman, I took my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them.
When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits I earned from the course wouldn’t count toward my major. By the end of the class, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic.
But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the wait list. That’s when the teacher asked for a volunteer to submit the first workshop story. Silence filled the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a place in the class ” He said he would. So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite.
Years later, I’d completed a degree in creative writing and was working on a novel when a literary agent(经纪人) asked to read the first 50 pages of my draft. But I wasn’t comfortable showing her anything; the novel was far from done. Throughout graduate school, I’d been advised many times not to contact agents until I have a complete draft. In the meanwhile, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the agent might not remember me after a year. So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact. I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed me on the strength of those chapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication of three novels.
Determination, focus, perseverance- the virtues that I consider crucial in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I’d trained my gaze only on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities to look up, raise my hand, and say yes.

Robots doing housework is nothing new, with Tesla revealing its latest achievements in robotics. Recently, a robot called Mobile Aloha caught the attention of many at the beginning of 2024, with short videos of it cooking at someone’s home going viral in January.
Developed by a team of researchers at Stanford University in the US, the robot can handle everything for a dish, whether it is chopping vegetables or cracking eggs. It also excels(擅长) in various household tasks like watering plants, petting cats, cleaning the floor and doing laundry. It even knows to shake the pillow after putting on a pillowcase(枕套). An Internet user joked under one video that as long as this thing doesn’t try to kill him while he is asleep, he is in real need of it.
However, a following video posted by one of the researchers, Tony Zhao, and showing Mobile Aloha’s failures proved that the idea of having a robot servant may just be wishful thinking. In the video, Mobile Aloha randomly broke glasses and plates, crashed on cabinets(橱柜) and even burned a pot.
It turns out that Mobile Aloha is not a complete self-learning system that can independently work in new environments. It relies on demonstrations by human operators in its surroundings, meaning that the robot needs to learn from human behavior before completing each task. Also, according to the team, the robot achieves a 95 percent success rate in wiping red wine stains(污渍), 80 percent in pushing chairs, and a mere 40 percent in frying shrimp(虾). In short, it’s far from perfect.
The behavioral problems of AI robots have been troubling scientists for years. Although AI robots do pretty well in things requiring high-level reasoning like math, they perform worse than a one-year-old child when it comes to simple tasks demanding abilities of emotion, reflexes(反射) and mobility, among others.
The new housework-helping robot gets people excited but also shows its shortcomings. There is still a long way for robots to take place of human to do household tasks.
61. What does Paragraph 2 focus on about Mobile Aloha
A. Its online popularity.
B. Its potential risks.
C. Its design principles.
D. Its main uses.
62. What does Tony Zhao’s video suggest according to the text
A. Mobile Aloha needs further improvement.
B. AI robots are ready for household tasks.
C. Robot servants should work under supervision.
D. It is expensive to have robots do household tasks.
63. How can Mobile Aloha best complete a new task, according to the text
A. By learning from previous tasks. B. By operating independently.
C. By imitating how humans do it. D. By seeking help from programmers.
64. Which type of tasks may AI robots be better at than others, according to the text
A. Quick reflex. B. accurate counting.
C. Emotional response. D. Simple mobility.
65. What is the author’s attitude towards the household robots

People have long noted the importance of physical activity. It can not only improve your appearance but also help to reduce the risk of some diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and even some kinds of cancer. But many people don’t know
how to do exercise.
Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control released its first ever Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. To get the most from your exercise plan, experts say adults should get at least two and a half hours of exercise each week. More intense(剧烈的) activities reduce the suggested amount of time to one hour and fifteen minutes. And it doesn’t matter whether you exercise for short periods in five days or longer time in two or three days.
Most importantly, experts say people should choose physical activity that they find fun. This helps to guarantee that they stay with the program. According to them, walking tops the list. More than 79 million Americans walk to stay physically fit. Another popular form of exercise is jogging(慢跑). Jogging provides great physical conditioning for the heart and lungs. And it increases the flow of blood and oxygen in the body. Swimming is a third most popular sports activity in the United States. Swimming also presents less risk of muscle and joint injury because of the body’s weightlessness in water. This makes it a great choice of exercise for people with special needs, like persons who are overweight. Dancing can also be a fun way to exercise. This is especially true for those who see exercise as a necessary evil(坏事).
Whatever kind of exercise you choose, experts agree that you should start small first. Start by exercising ten minutes a day two times a week. After a few weeks, work your way up. You’d better increase your time to fifteen or twenty minutes, and increase the number of days.

A Dream City to live
When referring to a dream city to live, Beijing comes to my mind first.
Located in the north of China, Beijing is the political and cultural center in our nation. The reasons why it is my dream city to live can be seen as follows. First and foremost, with long and glorious history, Beijing is the ideal place for me to take in relevant knowledge as I’m exceedingly obsessed with history. Besides, due to its advanced transportation, I find it convenient to go out at any time. Additionally, so enthusiastic and generous are local people that it is extremely easy to make friends with them, offering a friendly atmosphere.
In conclusion, I do hope that one day I can live in this marvellous city.
