When I was 16, my father, in a burst of entrepreneurial spirit, bought an old guesthouse in our village and decided to turn it into a luxury hotel. At the early stages, he experimented with everything. My dad had never dipped a toe into the world of hospitality himself, yet he had a vision of what guests might desire. His standards were exceedingly high and he firmly believed that hard work was the golden ticket to achieving them.
For a month that summer, my name was on the duty list as waitress at breakfast and dinner, which included laying the tables and glass polishing. This gave me the middle of the day to hit the books because my school report had not lived up to my father's high expectations.
Like all the other waitresses, I was equipped with a neat little uniform and instructions to treat the guests as though they were distinguished guests in my own home. Although I did not feel comfortable with this, I kept my feelings under wraps. Instead,I focused intently on performing the job as well as, if not better than, the older girls.
I soon learned how to handle the two most frightening elements in the kitchen: the dishwasher and the chef, Gordon. He had an impressive chef's hat and an ability to lose his temper for no clear reason. His breath was strong and fishy, and I always grabbed the dishes he set down with a forbidding expression on my face which was transformed into a charming smile between two battlefields.
Breakfast waitressing was more enjoyable than the dinner shift. The guests came walking aimlessly into the dining room from seven thirty onwards, their eyes lighting up at the breathtaking view of the sea and islands framed by our dining-room windows. If the day looked promising, I would note down requests for boats and packed lunches along with their breakfast orders. It was a matter of pride to me that everyone got their order quickly, and I took pleasure in my ability to get on with the people at each table. It was funny how differently people behaved in the evening, talking with louder, colder voices, and not always returning my smile.
24. How was the writer's father according to the first paragraph
A. Visionary and sensitive. B. Industrious and caring.
C. Ambitious and cautious. D. Daring and demanding.
25. What did the writer mean by saying“I always grabbed the dishes ... a charming smile between two battlefields”

B. She checked the food Gordon gave her in case it smelled fishy.
C She drove Gordon mad because of the way she look the dishes.
D. She forbade Gordon from getting angry as the owner of the hotel.
26. Why did the writer enjoy serving breakfasts more than dinners
A. The splendid daytime scenery lifted her mood.
B. It was more exciting to cater to challenging requests.
C. Distinguished guests were more punctual at breakfast.
D. She was delighted to establish friendly ties with diners.
27. What can be learned about the way the writer performed her job
A She managed to do it effortlessly due to the sense of duty.
B. She found all aspects of it enjoyable like the other waitresses.
C. She navigated it very well despite several difficulties she met.
D. She devoted herself to it at the cost of her academic performance.

Psychological science is full of interesting topics, many of which tell a coherent picture of human nature, but some of which create seemingly contradictory stories. A case in point is the tricky and misunderstood intersection between strength-based science and the research on narcissism(自恋)
There is now convincing evidence to show that narcissism is on the rise, especially in our youth. Some researchers have gone so far as to say that it is occurring in epidemic proportions, with about 25% of young people showing symptoms of narcissism. The inflated ego of Generation Me is reflected in reality TV, celebrity worship, out-of-control consumerism, materialism… perhaps even a new type of president.
We are correct to be concerned about this phenomenon but our fear that all kids are potential narcissists has caused an unhelpful counter-reaction to approaches that seek to make our children and teens feel good about themselves.
In my own research on strength-based parenting, it is common for people to wrongly label this approach as a recipe for self-entitlement. Their argument seems to be that a child who knows their strengths will automatically view themselves as better than everyone else. It is argued that the self-assurance that comes with identifying and using their positive qualities will make a child arrogant, selfish and uncaring. Earnest confidence about one's strengths is categorized as over-confidence; desirable self-knowledge is branded as excessive self-admiration.
Why does this occur It's partly because more is known about narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychology has largely stayed within the limit of academic journals or has been applied only within certain contexts such as the workplace, research on narcissism has made its way into the mass media and into our collective consciousness. The New York Times noted that narcissism is a favored“go-to” topic and that people everywhere are diagnosing others with it.
The fear that a strength-based approach will cause narcissism also occurs because we unwittingly fall prey to binary (非此即彼的) thinking. We mistakenly believe that one cannot be both confident and humble. We focus on Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. There's no way that Gandhi and Mother Teresa could have achieved what they did without confidence in their strengths, and yet they are both pillars of humility and selflessness.
When we assume that strength-focus is the same as a self-focus, we fail to entertain the idea that people who know their strengths are, actually, more likely to be pro-social and focus on helping others.
It's tempting to conclude that every young person is at risk of becoming a narcissist but I'd like to stand up for the thousands of young kids I have worked with who are caring, thoughtful and humble— even when they use their strengths.
28. What can we learn from the passage
A. Approximately a quarter of kids are potential narcissists.
B. Both strengths psychology and narcissism are difficult to understand.
C. An increasing number of youth are showing an inflated sense of self.
D. Knowing the kids' strengths has an opposite effect on making them feel good.
29 Why are teenagers' strengths often mistaken for narcissism
A. There is a lack of strengths in our collective consciousness.
B. Strengths psychology is less accessible to the general public.
C. Academic journals and mass media report more on narcissism.
D. A number of people are diagnosed with narcissism by doctors.
30. What's the author's attitude towards strength-based parenting
A. Neutral. B. Skeptical. C. Cautious. D. Favorable.
31. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage
A. Teens’ Narcissism Diagnosis. B. A Recipe for Self-entitlement.
C. Teens’ Confidence Misunderstood. D. Binary Thinking of Psychological Science.

For the arts “to mean more, to more people”, as Arts Council England(ACE) argues that they should, would be excellent. Music, drama, dance, visual arts, poetry and literature are among the most precious human achievements. To live in a country in which these are more widely shared and enjoyed would be proof that we are making progress. The point is not to entertain or educate people, or bring communities together. Nor is it all about boosting jobs and investment.Imagination has intrinsic (内在的) value, and research carried out by ACE in the course of preparing its 10-year strategy showed that people from all walks of life value and get pleasure from cultural activities.
Positioning itself as a development agency, ACE will now hope to win government backing for a change of direction that orients it away from the biggest and most famous national institutions and towards the towns, villages and grassroots organizations that should be similarly deserving of attention. There, it imagines a role for itself“building the identity and prosperity of places,” bringing professional artists together with voluntary groups, particular in areas that have previously not been well represented on the cultural map.
ACE's chair, Sir Nicholas Serota, quotes the first world war centenary project devised by the artist, Jeremy Deller, and theatre director, Rufus Norris, as the model of what he wants his organization to be about. By acting as soldiers, and orchestrating their encounters with members of the public in settings across England, the artists succeeded in“dissolving the barriers between artists and audiences.”
To what extent the vision that ACE wants to promote cultural engagement so as to transform the passive spectators into the active participants is realized will depend in part on whether ACE's ambitions catch the government's interest sufficiently to influence the upcoming spending review, and provide a counterweight to the scorn (轻视) that is regularly poured on the humanities.Around 400m has been cut from local government arts budgets since 2010, and ACE cannot meet the financial needs. The closure of youth clubs and live music venues, and growing financial pressures linked to the property market, are among other reasons for this worrisome narrowing of opportunities. So far Boris Johnson has offered few signs that he has in mind a starring role for the arts in post-Brexit Britain, although 2022's Festival of Brexit is one such event. ACE's plan should boost the profile of all those, in government and outside, who are arguing for more.
32. What is the purpose of making arts available to more people
A. To consolidate various communities. B. To maximize the natural value of art.
C. To create job opportunities for artists. D. To enlighten people from all walks of life.
33. What place is ACE most likely to promote the arts according to the passage
A. Rural settlements. B. Local governments.
C. Commercial centers. D. National organization.
34. Which of the following statements would Sir Nicholas Serota most probably agree with
A. Artists and audiences can create and enjoy the arts together without barriers.
B. Audiences with little education can also gain pleasure from cultural activities.
C. The soldiers and volunteers should vividly show scenes about the First World War.
D. Science, technology and maths are more important than humanities and arts nowadays.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The British government has done enough to promote arts.
B. For the arts to get revitalized more extensive efforts are needed.
C. ACE should narrow the financial gap left by the local government.
D. Many performing venues have closed due to the rising property market.

The Hardest Novel I' ve Ever Read
For the last three months, I have glared at its fat heavy form on my floor with a vague sense of personal failure. I have opened Ulysses twice, determined to fir: sh it, and managed to get all the way to page 46. 36
37 I like the community this book has created, its inherent sense of freedom and celebration of all things rude and true. I like that the style and language allow for readers to choose how they read it —— some recommend skipping chapter three, others suggest reading it only after reading ABOUT it but I still, get stuck.
Why do I get stuck 38 On the“Most Difficult Novels” list on the Goodreads website,Joyce takes the top two spots, with Ulysses ranking first and Finnegans Wake following it. I think what is restricting me to page 46 is the language: the big fat burst of Chaucerian English with slang and jaunty dialogue that, while entertaining me, is also leaving me a little lost.
There are a few other“worthy” works of literature I have yet to read, including Infinite Jest and War and Peace. 39 I really. want to love Ulysses. I feel deeply frustrated that I can't finish it, all the while appreciating its uniqueness, weightiness and special“Joyceness”.
The English writer Virginia Woolf thought Ulysses was nonsense as she complained in her diaries about the pressure to finish reading it. On the contrary, Vladimir Nabokov, the author who wrote Lolita expressed deep love for it. 40 I have read it similar to a long marriage(something unpleasant, big reward at the end), modern Jazz-fusion (an innovative genre) and boxing match with oneself(wanting to punch yourself in the face), which is how I felt by page 46.
Some people love Ulysses, so where am I getting wrong My ultimate hope is that the struggle will be worth the effort and I can proceed victorious onto page 800 or so, on my third, fourth, eighteenth try. Something tells me 1 will get there in the end.
A. I'm not entirely sure myself.
D. A lot of them are weighty tomes(巨著), but I like big books.
C. It seems that reading Ulysses is a big different experience for everyone.
D. I have read so little both times that I have never bothered using a bookmark.
E. Even when-staring at pages without absorbing a word, I thought nice thoughts about it.
F. They, however, only cause me a slight sense of shame that I have not read or enjoyed them.
G. I have been amused and charmed by the first two or three chapters, and then puzzled and bored.

I stood with my friends in a line. My heart was hammering like anything, my hands cold and wet, my head buzzing with excitement and nervousness at the same time. I earnestly listened to the names of the house captains being announced, but in my heart, I wanted it to end because then the head girl would be announced. I so wanted it to be me.
I had made countless posters, badges and bracelets for the campaigning. Instead of having lunch during the lunch time, I had gone from person to person, asking them to vote for me. I had shouted at the top of my lungs the slogan, “East or West, Maryam is the best! Vote for her and your year will be best!”
I had tried my hardest to convince people to vote for me. Now all I had left was hope.
“Guess who the head girl for the year. is ” teased the announcer.
A heavy silence fell, one that was full of hope and expectation, of fear and of nervousness.
The announcer teased for a minute or two before finally announcing the name of the head girl.
I felt confused as my friends pushed me out of the line. As I looked at the huge crowd clapping for me, I could not believe that I was the head girl of the school. The head of the council body. The student that was respected and liked by everybody.
From then on, I enjoyed the respect I got in and out of school. At home, my family members praised me and at school everyone looked up to me. They thought I was an inspiration as well as someone they could learn from. I had power. I could talk to the school principal and convince her to do anything. I could order around other council members and ask them to do anything.
But as days passed, I realized that with power comes responsibility.
