When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌) Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse — like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.
“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says. “You put organisms in new relationships and observe what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”
4. What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs
A. He was fond of traveling. B. He enjoyed being alone.
C. He had an inquiring mind. D. He longed to be a doctor.
5. Why did John put the sludge into the tanks
A. To feed the animals. B. To build an ecosystem.
C. To protect the plants. D. To test the eco-machine.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou
A. To review John’s research plans. B. To show an application of John’s idea.
C. To compare John’s different jobs. D. To erase doubts about John’s invention.
7. What is the basis for John’s work
A. Nature can repair itself. B. Organisms need water to survive.
C. Life on Earth is diverse. D. Most tiny creatures live in groups.
The film “Catch the Doll” is a poignant and thought-provoking work that, on the surface, delivers the signature humor of the Happy Twist team, but underneath, it presents a cruel allegory that resonates deeply with the audience. Here are my impressions of the movie, articulated in English:
“Catch the Doll” is a masterful blend of comedy and tragedy, a film that starts with laughter but ends with a profound reflection on life's ironies. The movie, starring the iconic duo Shen Teng and Ma Li, is akin to a sugar-coated shell that initially offers the sweet taste of humor but gradually reveals the bitter pill of social satire and a probing examination of human nature.
The film’s narrative is a stark portrayal of the extreme pressures and expectations placed on children by their parents. Shen Teng's character, Ma Chenggang, a wealthy businessman, and his wife, Chunlan, played by Ma Li, are the epitome of parents who are willing to go to any lengths, even to the point of deception and manipulation, to ensure their son’s success. Their approach to parenting is chilling, turning the concept of a nurturing home into a prison of expectations and control.
The movie cleverly uses exaggeration to highlight the absurdity of such an extreme parenting style. Ma Chenggang’s belief in the necessity of hardship for his son's growth is a twisted interpretation of the saying, “Heaven will confer a great responsibility on a person, it will first exercise his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil.”
“Catch the Doll” also invites us to consider the broader implications of such behavior. It raises questions about the value of individual freedom and the right of children to have their own dreams and aspirations, rather than being mere tools to fulfill parental ambitions. The film serves as a mirror, reflecting the often-overlooked issues of excessive expectations, out-of-control education, and the disregard for personal value in modern society.
In the end, “Catch the Doll” is not just a comedy; it’s a social commentary that provokes deep thought and self-reflection. It’s a film that, despite its humorous facade, leaves a lasting impact, urging viewers to question the nature of love, control, and the true meaning of success. The movie’s ending, which is both happy and tinged with regret, encapsulates the complex emotions that it stirs within us, reminding us that often, we spend our lives trying to heal the wounds of our childhood.
8. What is the central theme of the film “Catch the Doll”
A. The importance of parental guidance in children's success.
B. The balance between humor and social issues in filmmaking.
C. The paradoxical nature of extreme parenting and its impact on children.
D The journey of a child's pursuit of happiness and success.
9. In the film, the character Ma Chenggang’s parenting style is depicted as:
A. Encouraging and supportive of his son’s personal aspirations.
B. Strict but ultimately beneficial for his son’s character development.
C. Excessive and potentially damaging to his son’s well-being.
D. Indifferent and neglectful of his son’s emotional needs.
10. The film "Catch the Doll" uses the character of Ma Chenggang to:
A. Critique the societal pressure on children to succeed academically.
B. Advocate for a more lenient approach to parenting.
C. Illustrate the potential consequences of extreme parental control.
D. Demonstrate the effectiveness of traditional parenting methods.
11. The author’s tone in discussing the film “Catch the Doll” can be best described as:
A. Critical and disapproving of the depicted parenting methods.
B. Neutral, simply presenting the film’s narrative without bias.
C. Admiring and appreciative of the film’s social commentary.
D. Skeptical, questioning the effectiveness of the film’s message.
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has revealed a planet, WASP-107b. The planet, which orbits a K-type star in under six days, has already caught the attention of astronomers and been considered an odd thing, for its size is about 1,316 times larger than that of Earth but its mass only about 30 times heavier, earning it the name of the “candyfloss” (棉花糖) planet.
The latest observations give a strange world beyond our solar system. “Our understanding of other planets depends on what we know from our own planet,“ says Prof. Leen Decin, first author of the research. “That’s very restricted knowledge. But exploring space requires more.” The planet was discovered in 2017, after astronomers spotted light from its host star, each time the planet passed in front of it. “It’s like a fly in front of a street lamp,” says Decin.
James Webb takes these observations to the next level by measuring starlight shining through the planet’s atmosphere. Because distinct elements absorb light of distinct wavelengths, the band of colored starlight indicates which gases are present.
The latest observations of the “candyfloss” planet reveal evidence of gases like water vapor (水蒸气) in the atmosphere. It is also the first time that the chemical composition of clouds on another planet has been identified-in this case, a kind of special sand. The planet’s atmosphere would feature something similar to the Earth’s water cycle but involve sand cycling between solid and gaseous states. From the hotter, lower levels, with temperatures close to 1,000℃, some steam would rise up, cool and form grains of sand too small to see. Eventually, these clouds of sand would become heavy enough and they would rain back.
“The universe has so many surprises,” says Decin. “I do visualize various alternative ways for life to form on another planet. It might be very different from something you know here on Earth. We have to broaden our imagination.”
12. Why is WASP-107b thought strange
A. It has shining starlight. B. It orbits the parent star quickly.
C. It is large but relatively light. D. It is in the shape of candyfloss.
13. What restricts people’s knowledge of other planets
A. Unforeseen problems in space exploration. B. Limited information from Earth.
C. Strict requirements for direct observations. D. Lack of support for in-depth research.
14. Which aspect of WASP-107b is mainly talked about in paragraph 4
A. Its sand cycling. B. Its similarities to Earth.
C. Its weather patterns. D. Its atmospheric conditions.
15. What do Decin’s words imply in the last paragraph
A. Astronomy improves life on Earth. B. Life might exist in outer space.
C. Life on other planets brings surprises. D. Researchers should be more creative.

How Your Brain Deceives You
Your brain possesses some incredible abilities, from recalling conversations with close friends to tackling complex math problems with ease. ____16____ At times, it may even overlook critical information, resulting in errors that could be bad for your well-being or health. ____17____
One of the biggest shortcomings of your brain is that it can get lazy. When trying to solve a problem or make a decision, your mind often falls back on solutions that have worked in the past. While using shortcuts can be a useful and effective approach, they can also trip you up and cause you to make mistakes. For example, maybe you’re terrified of flying because you can think of several tragic, high-profile plane crashes. In reality, traveling by air is much safer than traveling by car. ____18____
Moreover, your brain might fail to detect significant changes occurring in your surroundings, a phenomenon referred to as change blindness. ____19____ — otherwise, it will get overwhelmed. Seemingly not like a huge problem, it can have major consequences according to some research. For example, people who have jobs like air traffic control can make potentially disastrous errors as a result of change blindness.
____20____ In the process, we twist reality to protect our self-esteem — in other words, we don’t want to own up when we mess up. Why do we participate in the blame game Researchers believe it’s to safeguard our self-esteem and shield ourselves from the fear of failure. When adopting this mindset, we attribute negative outcomes to factors beyond our control.
A. Your brain has to prioritize what it pays attention to.
B. But it is not that perfect and open to imperfections.
C. This realization can carry you through some unnecessary errors.
D. However, you can avoid some of these errors by acquiring a better understanding of them.
E. It goes without saying that your brain is incapable of processing all information at the the same time.
F. When something goes wrong, your brain instinctively seeks someone or something to hold responsible.
G. However, your brain is using a mental shortcut to fool you into believing flying is more dangerous than it is.

The school year was coming to a close, and the air was filled with anticipation for the upcoming annual school fair. Our class had eagerly decided to host a bake sale, with each student ready to contribute their favorite recipes.
Spirits were high. Every spare moment was devoted to perfecting the art of baking, from experimenting with different flavors to mastering the art of cake decorations. Our classroom became a hub of activity, filled with the sweet scent of freshly baked goods and the sound of laughter and chatter.
The day of the fair finally arrived, and our table was beautifully decorated with a mouthwatering baked goods. There were freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, warm and crispy, alongside homemade fruit pies. The attractive scent was irresistible, and it wasn't long before a long line of students and parents formed, their eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
However, as the morning wore on, we couldn't help but notice that the neighboring class’s booth (摊位) was appealing to a significantly larger crowd. There was a buzz of excitement surrounding their table, and it was clear that they were onto something special.
Among our class, a sense of healthy competition began to emerge. Sarah, our natural leader, suggested we step up our game. “We need to find out what they're doing differently and improve our booth,” she said with determination. Out of curiosity, we sent our most inquisitive member, Mark, to investigate.
Soon, Mark returned with good news. “They've got a ‘Taste of the World’ theme going on over there,” Mark reported. “They’re serving up a variety of international desserts, and it’s quite the hit!”
We were intrigued by the idea and asked Mark for more details. He went on to explain that the students had gone the extra mile by dressing up in traditional costumes from the countries they were representing. “It's like a cultural feast for the senses,” he added with enthusiasm.

【47题答案】
【答案】Inspired by their creativity, we began to brainstorm ways to enhance our own booth. After a heated discussion, we decided to adopt a similar theme, but with a unique twist. Our booth would become a 'Tour of Sweets: A Journey Through Time'. Each member would present a historical sweet from a different era, ranging from ancient civilizations to modern innovations. We worked tirelessly to prepare for the transformation. Our booth was adorned with ancient Egyptian decorations for the earliest known desserts, and Renaissance-style tablecloths for the sweets of that period. We even set up a small 'time machine' prop to add to the immersive experience. As the visitors approached, they were not just purchasing desserts, but taking a trip through the history of sweetness.
As the day drew to a close, it was clear that our efforts had paid off. The crowd at our booth was just as large as the neighboring one, with people lining up to experience our unique take on the 'Taste of the World' theme. We received countless compliments on our creativity and the effort we put into making our booth a memorable experience. The fair concluded with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Not only had we matched our competitors in popularity, but we had also learned the power of innovation and teamwork. The bake sale was a sweet success that we would remember for years to come.
