During the two sessions (会议), Lei Jun, the CEO of China’s technology company Xiaomi, called for more e-waste (电子垃圾) recycling plans in China.
“China should come up with different recycling methods to make full use of the huge number of unwanted smartphones and computers to reduce the country’s carbon footprint,” Lei told CCTV News.
According to the 2020 UN Global E-waste Monitor, the world’s e-waste will reach 74.6 million tons by 2030. That’s almost a doubling of e-waste in just 16 years.
Now, technology companies are looking for different ways to solve e-waste problem. For example, US company Apple built a robot called Daisy. With Daisy, valuable materials in used iPhones can be pulled out more easily. Samsung plans to use recycled materials in all of its new products by the year 2025. This year’s bushfire (森林大火) season in Australia has brought damage like never before. The fires have been terrible for humans, and worse for animals.
Early on, most reports about the bushfires focused on the loss of land and cost to humans. Recently, people have become more aware of the effects of the fires on animals. Chris Dickman, a scientist at the University of Sydney, tried to find out how many animals might have been killed by the fires. The number he came up with was surprisingly large; over 1 billion animals. Fast animals, or those that can fly, may be able to escape a bushfire. Slow-moving animals like koalas, may not.
In New South Wales, around 8. 000 koalas about a third of the state’s koalas-are believed to have been killed. In other areas. like Kangaroo Island in South Australia, as many as 25. 000 may have died.
The loss of animals would be a tragedy (悲剧) anytime and anywhere, but it could be especially bad news it Australia. Because it is home to many special animals that can’t be found anywhere else. Scientists worry that the bushfires might put an end to some kinds of animals that were already in danger of dying out.
It’s not just about animals killed directly by the fires. Even when animals survive (幸存), it can be hard for them to stay alive in the world left behind by the fires. That’s because many of the places they live and their sources (来源) of food have been destroyed. For that reason, workers for Australia’s National Park are using helicopters (直升飞机) to drop sweet potatoes and carrots onto 12 different areas where rock wallabies (小袋鼠) live. Rock-wallabies often survive bushfires, but can have difficulty finding enough to eat after the big fire.
Other animals, like thousands of wild camels, are being killed on purpose in order to protect farms and homes. Because of the drought, thirsty camels have been invading (入侵) places where people live, looking for water. Insects and fish are also not included in the “over 1 billion” number. For fish, the worst could still be in the future. There is so much ash (灰烬) on the ground from the fires that when strong rains finally do arrive, rivers and lakes will be heavily polluted with ash.

Blue whales are the largest animals in the world. They can be as heavy as many, many cars! These friendly whales live in the ocean and feed on the smallest sea animals called krill (磷虾).
Now, blue whales are in great danger. Some people make their ocean home dirty and others kill whales for their meat. Another big problem for blue whales is the Earth getting warmer. As the ocean water gets warmer, the krill they feed on move to cooler places, so it’s hard for blue whales to find enough food.
But some good things are happening too. People are helping blue whales. Governments (政府) are working together to make special places in the ocean where blue whales can be safe. Scientists are also studying blue whales to learn more about them and how to protect them.
And we teenagers can do something to help blue whales. We shouldn’t throw litter like glass bottles or food waste into the ocean. We can also take part in beach activities to make the ocean a better place for blue whales to live in. We can try to use less energy (能源) to keep the Earth cool. Doug Tallamy is an American scientist on wildlife and insects (昆虫). He always hopes people can grow native (当地的) plants in their gardens.
His new book, Nature’s Best Hope, came out on Earth Day of 2023. The book tells middle school students how to save the world in their own yards. He hopes the new book will carry its message into classrooms around the US. “The idea is that children are the future of our earth,” he said.
The new book tells that children can make easy changes at home to give insects and birds better living places. For example, the students can use metal pots (金属罐) to build a “bee hotel”. “Or you just plant a flower. It’s free and easy to watch it grow, and it makes a big difference,” Tallamy said.
Tai Montanarella, another scientist, helps lead programs for New York Botanical Garden. She said Tallamy’s new book is helpful to share the idea that Americans can do things at home to improve the environment.
Tallamy starts his new book by asking readers to look closely at their yards. “Nature is everywhere. That’s a good thing because humans like you and me wouldn’t live a day without it.” Tallamy writes. “That’s what this book is about—how to create a yard that is a real part of the natural world.”

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was a great success. China has kept the promise to hold a green Olympics. Many green actions made it possible, like providing environmentally friendly smart beds, using new energy cars, supporting sporting places with 100% clean energy and reusing rain and snow water.
Take making ice as an example. China didn’t use R507, a common material, to make ice because it isn’t friendly to the environment. Through 18 months’ hard work, China independently developed the CO2 direct cooling technology.
Tubes runs under the ice. Liquid (液态) CO2 goes through them to create heat exchange. The CO evaporates (蒸发) under the ice surface. It takes in heat and turns water on the surface into ice. And the CO2 goes into another circle. This technology helps to make ice better and faster. And above all, it is much greener because there’s no new CO2 produced. Among all the 15 ice sporting places in the Winter Olympics, 7 used the CO2 direct cooling technology to make ice. As a result, much less pollution was caused.
Beijing did so much more to save energy. Beijing built the new sporting places with green materials. As for the old ones, Beijing used new glass walls to replace traditional walls to let more natural light in. 70% of the waste heat was also reused to keep warm and dry. And many new energy cars were used at the Winter Olympics.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is the first to truly achieve carbon neutrality (碳中和), and it has set new standards in green technologies. Some newspapers say China has set an example for the world in environmental protection and green development.

All around the world, buildings are going green! People are making green buildings. What does it mean to go green or to make a green building A green building is designed (设计) in a way that is not harmful (有害的) to the environment. The building uses energy, water, and other materials in ways that are good for the environment.
When planning green buildings, architects (建筑师) must think about how to use energy, water, and materials in an environment-friendly way. There are many ways to save energy. Architects can design buildings to use natural light. Buildings can also be made with solar power (太阳能) or wind power to get energy from the sun or the wind. To save water, green buildings can have areas on the roofs to collect rainwater. Kitchens and bathrooms can have sinks (洗涤池) and toilets (马桶) to keep water. As for the materials used to build the building, it is important to use materials that are not harmful to the air or water. Recycled (可回收的) materials can also be used for building.
Buildings around the world use all three of these ways to go green. An office building called CH2 in Melbourne, Australia, uses wind and solar power. A cultural center in London, England, is made from recycled train cars and is powered by solar and wind power. The Academy of Sciences building in California in the U. S. has recycled materials, solar energy, and a huge “living roof” of plants. A temple in Thailand is made out of one million recycled glass bottles! This is a good use of recycled material, and it also lets natural light into the temple.
More and more green buildings are being built and they are making the world a better place!

Some people feel very close to nature. Some feel calmer in green spaces, while others feel happier near the sea. A new study suggests that this connection to nature might have to do with people’s childhood. It could affect how much they care about the environment when they are older.
Researchers in Austria wanted to know what made people more likely to protect the environment. They did a survey with 2,370 adult volunteers. ▲ The questions included how often they spent time in green and blue spaces and how close they felt to nature. The researchers especially wanted to know how often these people visited places like rivers or the sea as children.
The study found something interesting. People who spent a lot of time near water as children felt more connected to nature when they grew up. They also spend a lot of time in both green and blue spaces now. The researchers think that spending time in blue spaces as a child might make someone care more about the environment when they are older.
The researchers also found that men spend more time in green spaces, while women do more things to preserve the environment, like recycling or using less electricity.
They hope to find a stronger connection between spending time near water as a child and caring more about the environment later in life. If they can make it, it might help solve environmental problems in the future.

Nature is all around us. It is the blue sky above our heads, the green grass under our feet, and the clear water in the rivers and lakes. We are a part of nature, and our lives are closely connected to it.
Plants are like nature’s little factories. They use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make food and oxygen. We need the oxygen that plants produce to breathe. And many of the foods we enjoy, such as fruits, vegetables, and grains, come from plants.
Animals also play an important role in nature. Some animals, like cows and sheep, give us milk, meat, and wool. Other animals, such as bees, are busy pollinating flowers. Birds are another wonderful part of nature. They build nests in trees and sing beautiful songs. Some birds also help spread seeds.
However, in modern times, we humans have caused some problems for nature. One big problem is pollution. Factories release (释放) a lot of dirty smoke into the air, which makes the air dirty and harmful to breathe. Cars also give out exhaust fumes (废气) that add to air pollution. And waste from factories and our homes is sometimes poured into rivers and lakes, making the water dirty and killing fish and other water-living creatures.
Another problem is the loss of habitats (栖息地). As cities grow and more land is needed for buildings and roads, forests and wetlands are being destroyed. Many animals lose their homes because of this. For example, pandas need bamboo forests to live, and when these forests are cut down, pandas are in danger.
We need to do something to protect nature. We can start by reducing waste. We can recycle paper, plastic, and glass. We can also save water by turning off the tap when we don’t need it. When we go out, we can try to use public transportation or walk more instead of always taking a car.
In conclusion, nature gives us so much. It is our responsibility to take care of it so that we can have a beautiful and healthy world to live in.
