Sleep is important to teenagers because it plays an important role in their physical and mental development. So how many hours of sleep does a teenager need
Age group Age range Recommended (建议的) hours of sleep every 24 hours
School-age 6—12 years 9—12 hours
Teen 13—18 years 8—10 hours
Adult 18 years and older 7 hours or more
A recent report shows that many teenagers in America are not getting the recommended amount of sleep. Here are the results.
Why is it hard for teens to get good sleep There is no single reason. Instead, several factors contribute (是……的原因之一) to this problem. One of them is late bedtime and early school start times. Now, more and more teenagers are developing a habit of being “a night owl”, staying up later at night and sleeping longer into the morning. If allowed to sleep as they wish, many teens would get eight hours or more a night, but most school start times require them to wake up much earlier in the morning.
The use of electronic devices like the smartphone and computer is another factor. Research has found that 89% or more of teens keep at least one device in their bedroom at night. Screen time late into the evening can cause sleep problems. Using these devices can keep teens excited and unable to fall asleep. Sudden phone messages can disrupt (扰乱) sleep. And being in the light from smartphones also makes people feel less sleepy.
So teens should improve their sleep environment and habits to get better sleep. Here are some tips.
◆ Get eight hours of sleep a night on weekdays and weekends.
◆ Put away electronic devices at least a half-hour before bed. Keep them on silent during the night.
◆ Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.

The post-1990s generation is often described as self-centered and always asking for help.
However, research results have painted a rather different picture. The post-1990s generation is independent, strong-minded and hardworking, according to a Peking University report. When it comes to learning and working, over 60 percent think their own interests are more important than others’ opinions.
Most of them see successful businessmen as their idols. But it’s not because they are rich. “Their strong belief in themselves and never-give-up spirit have won the hearts of the generation,” the report said. In addition, the post-1990s generation has a strong sense of social responsibility. Many of them have taken part in volunteer work. They also try to be responsible by studying hard and behaving (表现得体) online.
In the UK, many of the post-1990s generation have given up the drinking habits that the past generations had, The Telegraph noted. Most of them now have healthier hobbies, such as knitting (编织) and cooking.
“It’s hard to find time for a hobby if you are going out drinking,” Kate Payne, author of The Hip Girl’s Guide to Homemaking, told The Telegraph. Changes in their hobbies have also helped them learn good manners. The 2013 Youth Justice Statistics report in the UK showed that young people are less rude and noisy in public.
However, a generation’s traits don’t belong to every single person in it. “It’s what you do that can make you the kind of person you want to be,” said Cheng Dongfeng, director of the youth ideological and moral education center of West Anhui University.
11.How is the post-1990s generation often described

Free time is a good chance for teenagers to have fun. What about free time with parents around Some teenagers want free play without parents’ supervision (监管) while parents and experts (专家) may think differently.
Lin Tao, a middle school student, thinks teenagers should be free to play. “Last time I played with my parents around, I was nervous and just couldn’t enjoy myself to the fullest,” Lin says. “And my friend Chen Xiaoxin has similar experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates. Everyone felt uncomfortable with his mother’s supervision.”
Wang Min, a mother of a 14-year-old boy, thinks playtime needs supervision. She explains, “People usually say I like to control my kid, but that’s not true. I am just worried that he will get into trouble. Some guys may have a bad influence on him, and some games like LARP (剧本杀) may mislead him. He might even get indulged in the stories and can’t get back to real life.”
Mr. Ma, a doctor of social studies, says it’s understandable for teenagers to wish for freedom. Free play helps them to be independent. Parents can give them more space. They don’t have to supervise them all the time. However, teenagers should find out the exact details (细节) about the activities before playtime. Then they can communicate with their parents and decide together whether they can go out to play alone.

You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep” Recently, a British survey shows that there are many electronic products in teenagers’ bedrooms. They are influencing teenagers’ sleep badly.
The survey was done among 1,000 British kids from 12 to 16. It found that 50% of them got just 4 to 7 hours’ sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours.
Almost 25% of the kids said they often fell asleep while they were watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“This is very worrying,” said Dr. Chris, a British professor. “We call it ‘junk sleep.’ It means you don’t get enough sleep and the quality of the sleep is low, too. If you don’t get a good rest, you won’t do well in school the next day.”
The survey found that quite a few of the kids felt tired each day because of the junk sleep, especially girls between 13 and 16 feeling the worst. Nearly all the teenagers have a phone, a computer or TV in their bedrooms. And lots of them even have all the three.
Dr. Chris suggested that parents should help their children keep away from electronic products, and teenagers should spend less time on the electronic products.

In 2019, Canadians were advised to accept plant-based proteins such as beans, nuts and tofu instead of meat. “Over the past years, we’ve seen a changing food environment with more access to plant-based food. So it’s necessary to examine the nutritional (营养的) results of children following vegetarian (素食的) diets in Canada,” said Dr Jonathon Maguire, a doctor at St. Michael’s Hospital of Unity Health Toronto.
Researchers tested 8,907 children in a study. The data were collected between 2008 and 2019. Children were grouped by their vegetarian status (状态)——defined as a dietary pattern that doesn’t include meat or non-vegetarian status.
The researchers found children who had a vegetarian diet had similar mean body mass index (BMI), height, iron and vitamin D levels to those who ate meat. But the researchers also showed evidence (证据) that children having a vegetarian diet were nearly twice as likely to be underweight. There was no evidence of a connection with being overweight.
Being underweight may be a sign that the quality of the child’s diet doesn’t meet his or her nutritional needs to support normal growth. For children who eat a vegetarian diet, the researchers stressed access to healthcare providers who can provide growth monitoring, education and guidance to support the children’s growth and nutritional intake.
The plant-based dietary pattern is recognized as a healthy eating pattern because of increased intake of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and a low fat content. However, the researchers didn’t judge the quality of the vegetarian diets. There are different types of vegetarian diets, and a child’s growth and nutritional intake may be greatly affected by the diet’s quality. So further research is needed to examine the quality of vegetarian diets in childhood, as well as growth and nutritional results among children following a vegetarian diet.

If someone said they’d pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for 6 years, could you do it Could you An American mom challenged her son to do just that, and he succeeded.
Sivert Klefsaas is the youngest of Lorna Gold-strand Klefsaas’ four children, and his three older sisters all used social media growing up. It was influencing their feelings, as well as their friendships. So, Lorna thought, “If I could, I’d be willing to do whatever to keep Sivert off social media as long as I could, whatever that looks like.” And that’s where the idea for this challenge came from.
It all started when Lorna heard about a similar “16 for 16 challenge” on the radio, where a mother called Amanda Green gave her daughter Teresa $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media. So, Lorna decided to create her own “18 for 18 challenge”. Not only did Sivert finally complete this challenge, but he would do it again, too.
“It wasn’t too difficult to live without social media, and I didn’t think about it much during the 6 years,” Sivert said. “As time went on, it was more of a proud thing.”
He had his friends keep him up to update on the latest information. Sivert added, “I got to avoid all the unnecessary things that were on there. It also meant I had more time to focus on my grades and sports instead.”
Now that he’s done with the challenge, Sivert joined Instagram (照片墙), but has no plans to let social media define (定义) him.
“Social media is great. We certainly need to use it,” Sivert said. “But also make sure you spend time in other areas of your life, especially those personal relationships.”
Still, Lorna is proud of her son’s success. “We are certainly not against social media, but it’s the healthy using of it,” Lorna told CNN.

It is often said that elderly people don’t understand youngsters, while many believe that children are too young to fully appreciate (理解) the wisdom of their elders. But in truth, both groups have a lot to learn from each other.
Sister Geraldine Tan runs the St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged and Hospice in Singapore. It’s mainly a facility (场所) for serving the elderly. But not all of its visitors are senior citizens (老年人).
The home also includes a childcare center for about 50 kids between the ages of 2 months and 6 years old. At the center of the home’s courtyard, there’s a playground where the elderly can play with the kids. By doing so, they can learn more about each other and gain mutual (相互的) respect and understanding.
I think this is quite an interesting idea. For one thing, we live in a world where aging societies are becoming more common. China itself is facing this problem as its population ages. It will be important for young people to be able to understand and care for the elderly in the coming years.
Sadly, my own grandparents weren’t around when I was little, as they had already passed away. I never got to learn what the world was like through their eyes, or what kinds of challenges they might have faced when they were my age. Their lives will always be a mystery (谜) to me.
But I suppose I can still learn from other people of older generations. I might find some of their ideas old-fashioned, and they might believe that my generation’s way of thinking is strange or incorrect. But we can still learn from each other anyway.

If I had a cold, I wouldn’t think twice about telling my friends or my doctor. For some reason, however, if I had a mental (心理的) problem, I might not treat it in the same way.
At my elementary school, mental health was not discussed even once as far as I can remember. This makes me wonder how many other schools are failing to educate their students on this topic. It makes me sad that children growing up with mental illness may feel like it is something to be ashamed of (对……感到羞耻的) because it is never discussed. When I reached high school, mental health was still seldom discussed. But when it was in the topic of health or biology class, I was given a broad idea that mental illness was a “thing” that really lies.
In my opinion, overstressed high school students could benefit (获益) greatly from more deep discussions about how to deal with mental health problems, such as how to know when you should care about yourself or a friend, or who to reach out for help. I know my friends and I could have benefited. Even if you personally have never faced mental health problems, someone you know is sure to have, and you can offer timely help.
I also believe we need to normalize (使……正常化) discussions about mental health at an early age, rather than hiding them from sight. At school, I saw a student’s report on mental health education and how it can be carried out in the American school system. The student used the film Iniside Out to explain feelings to younger kids. This report made me believe that it is possible to start these discussions at a young age if we try.
Although we can’t change the way people think about mental health over one night, there are still things we can do. Asking our friends how they’re feeling is a good start.
43.How does the writer introduce his topic in Paragraph 1
A.By showing facts. B.By giving numbers.
C.By making comparison. D.By sharing a story.
44.What does the writer learn from the student’s report
A.Kids who are healthy outside might be ill inside.

C.The earlier, the better! D.How to pay attention to mental health
It’s a scene in many homes around the world: tired-eyed teens wake to the sound of their alarm clock. Another school day begins, and we all wish we could have just one extra hour of sleep.
For lucky high school students in England, they’re now going to reset their alarm and get an extra hour of sleep. Instead of starting school at 9 am, students will begin the academic day at 10 am.
This is part of a huge study by Oxford University. The experiment will see whether later classes can improve exam results.
More than 100 schools across England will join the four-year experiment, which includes tens of thousands of students. It is based on scientific evidence that teenagers are out of step with traditional school hours.
“We know that something funny happens when you’re a teenager,” lead sleep researcher Colin Epsie told The Telegraph. “Your parents think it’s because you’re lazy and everything would be ok if you could get to sleep earlier. But science is telling us that teenagers need to sleep more in the mornings.”
A similar experiment in 2009 saw an improvement of 19 percent in exam scores for major subjects—such as math and science.
Teenagers’ sleep cycles, on average, begin two hours after adults. Neuroscientists say teens have a built-in clock, which makes them more likely to go to sleep around midnight. As well as not feeling fully awake until between 9 am and 10 am. This body clock stays until the age of 19 for females and 21 for males.
Schools are places for learning, as well as education laboratories—finding out the best ways to learn and increase knowledge. Yet we’ll have to wait until 2018 to find out these exciting results!

This year, the China Youth and Children Research Center made a report. It said that 30 million Chinese children under the age of 17 are facing a great number of emotional and mind challenges. The mind health of young students has raised the focus from everyone in the whole community. It is a common situation in recent years.
Lately, the Education Office and 17 other groups started a plan called “Shared Improvement and Upgrading (提升) of Students’ Mind Health in the New Era (2023—2025)”. The report mentioned, with the quick society and money growth, the world where students grow is always changing quickly. And mind health problems are becoming more common among students. So, a national guidance team on students’ mind health is being created to improve the scientific decision-making about students’ mind health. Work is being done to improve mind health services for students and increase their mind health knowledge.
It is understood that this plan aims to fully improve students’ mind health services and increase their mind health knowledge. It has been put into the “Healthy China Action 2023 Work Points”.
In my point of view, every student is the future of their family and the community. Taking care of and helping students’ mind health is on the top of a hill of education. Strawberries look nice, but a light pressure can make them out of shape. Nowadays, there are many young people who are just like strawberries. They easily break down when they face difficulties. They don’t know what to do when they are in trouble. They have a common name—strawberry kids.
Why are many students so easy to break down Parents and schools are a main reason. Parents do almost everything for them in their daily life, while schools care more about their grades instead of developing their personality.
Liu Yue, 13, is from Fujian. His mum hardly criticizes (批评) him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him strictly, he felt surprised and sad. He began to doubt his ability.
Students should do something to make themselves mentally (精神上) strong. An expert said, “When you are in trouble, don’t ask for help too quickly. You should try to deal with problems first by yourself. I also advise you to take an active part in sports and social activities. That can make you mentally strong.”
Growing up is not just a happy process. Pains also go along with it. The most important thing is to face the pains bravely and learn from them.

Happiness has become a big deal in the past ten years. Hundreds of books, speeches and even the media tell us that happiness is within our reach. All we have to do is to follow some simple steps, like going to deep thoughts, living in the moment and doing yoga (瑜伽). But if you are going through a difficult time, none of these may work.
In fact, feeling deeply sad is a normal (正常的) part of getting better. It is said that if you are going through a hard time, it’s important for you to do something that can make you feel better. Here are some skills that have helped me and many people. Perhaps they can work for you too.
Looking at water while you are in nature can bring quietness. Being outside is also good. But if you’re not anywhere near an ocean, lake or river, looking at shapes of moving water on TV can be soothing.
But if you have lost the ability to find some pleasure in your daily life or from the people around you, think about the time you were at your happiest. Doing this actually sends chemicals to your brain, and it can make you feel better. If it still doesn’t work, something worse may have happened to you. You’d better think about getting yourself checked out by doctors.
We can’t allow our feelings of low points to rule our lives, but we can’t think little of them, either. They must be treated carefully so that we can move on.

Success is often considered to be the opposite of failure. To teenagers, it is the achievement of a goal or completion of something they really need, such as good grades and the ability to get along well with their classmates. Some schools used to agree with most parents who measured the success of their children according to grades, but now they pay special attention to moral (道德的) education and character-building to make sure teenagers achieve success in building human relationships.
Schools give chances to students to discover their hidden abilities so that they can enjoy some form of success. For example, those good at speaking skills are advised to take part in speech competitions while those interested in arts are expected to perform in front of their classmates. Teenagers also get the pleasure of success when they join their favorite clubs.
Teenagers are often told that success is not easy to achieve and that success lies in hard work. Great efforts have to be put into project work. Doing things much later than planned should be avoided as this will lead to a mountain of work which finally makes them nervous. Another good quality (品质) is a sense of responsibility which makes them remember that a task has to be completed.
Sticking to moral values is the key to success, too. Honest teenagers will win the trust of friends leading to good relationships.
