During the three-day New Year holiday, over 3 million tourists poured into Harbin. Many of them came from southern China where snow was nowhere to be found. Harbin locals gave these visitors a cute nickname “Nanfang xiaotudou” or “Southern potatoes”. It is because southern people are usually shorter and they look like small potatoes when wearing thick jackets and hats. To Harbin people, this name is not to make fun of southerners, but to create a sense of warmth with humor.
Harbin tried everything to meet tourists’ needs, especially those from the south. Cooks carefully cut the local frozen pear into small pieces. Different kinds of concerts were held in shopping malls. A drone (无人机) lifted a man-made moon for tourists to take photos. Harbin really went all out to make them happy.
However, even though they did all these to please the southern tourists, this nickname “Southern potatoes” sparked a heat discussion on the Internet. While Harbin locals use the name to show warmth and good will, some sightseers feel that calling them “small potatoes” is making fun of their height.

Actually there is no rule that clearly states whether or not a guide dog is allowed on the bus in Beijing. In fact, the ways to deal with guide dogs are not the same in different places. In some parts of Jiangsu Province, guide dogs are allowed on the bus. It is one of the ways to express respect to the blind people.
There are lots of blind people in China, but we don’t see them often. Why The answer is clear. Guide dogs are not allowed to enter many public places. If blind people are not allowed to take the guide dogs with them, how can they go out What’s more, sidewalks (人行道) for blind people are often obstructed. Sometimes there are even cars taking up the space of the sidewalk for the blind. No wonder few blind people can be seen in the streets.
If discrimination (歧视) against them is always there, how can blind people feel they are a part of our society Blind people should be freed from their home so that they can play a part in our society.
