A boy and a dog were in a field. It was getting dark. A spaceship was trying to land on an unknown planet.
The boy’s name was Billy and his dog was called Oscar.
In the spaceship, the captain was unhappy. Something was wrong. He sent a message to his own planet and got ready to land.
“Come on!” called the boy. The dog was happy. He was wagging (摇) his tail. Billy gave the dog a biscuit. Suddenly, Billy and Oscar heard an unusual noise. Then they saw a light near some trees.
Only the captain was alive in the spaceship. “I am alone, but I will find the strongest creature and control it. Then I will control the planet.”
Billy called Oscar again but he didn’t come. Oscar ran to the trees.
The captain got out of his spaceship. His spacesuit was uncomfortable. The air was fresh on this planet but he didn’t take off his spacesuit. He saw huge green leaves everywhere. He climbed to the top of one of them and looked at the sky. It was dark blue.
Oscar smelled something. Maybe it was good to eat. He picked up a metal object with his teeth.
The captain saw a huge monster. He jumped onto its leg. He climbed up and went into the monster’s head. “Now I can control you,” he said.
Billy found Oscar. He was moving his head strangely. Billy shouted “Come here!” But Oscar didn’t move. He just looked at Billy.
The captain was looking at the boy, too. “Kill that creature,” he said.
Oscar jumped at Billy and knocked him to the ground. “Oscar!” cried Billy. He was scared and hit Oscar on his head. Then something small fell out of Oscar’s ear and Oscar wagged his tail again.

Late last night, I was woken up by a sudden sound. I felt very tired and tried to sleep, but the sound didn’t stop to let me sleep. Finally, I got up to see where the sound came from. I went to the backyard of my house and saw a very bright light in the sky going towards the woods nearby. I felt anxious and decided to see what it was. I took my bicycle and followed the light. Minutes later, I was in front of a huge spaceship.
I was amazed. When I touched it, a wave pushed me aside. I felt as if my whole body was paralyzed. I could not move my body, but I could still see. I saw a human... no, a monster…Then I lost consciousness.
When I woke up, I was in a large cage. I saw other men and women—in nearby cages. They had either passed out or perhaps died. I examined the cage and found a small window covered with dust. I cleared the dust and saw through it. I saw space!
I also saw the Earth getting smaller and smaller as we moved away from it. I was confused as to how I got here. Suddenly, a strange creature caught my attention. He was half-human and half-monster. For sure, he was not an earthling—he was an alien!
The creature was examining each cage. Suddenly, he appeared in front of my cage. He said something like, “Zoom zappa zew zhumu zam zeus.” I didn’t understand it, but then a loud sound came. It said, “Hello, New Human. We are the Grays.” It was probably the translation of the words that the creature had just said, I guessed.
I felt frightened. “What is the alien going to do to me ” I fearfully wondered.
I had watched many alien movies, so I knew I had been kidnapped. I felt frightened: Was the alien going to do an experiment on me
But then I heard a loud crash. The spaceship was falling back to Earth. I also heard the sounds of shooting. I was confused: What was happening
Another alien appeared. He looked more like a human but had bright eyes and strange hands. He broke my cage and picked me up. I revolted (反抗), but my power was nothing against the alien’s. The alien put me down near the half-opened gate of the spaceship. He gave me a locket (盒式吊坠) and said in English, “Wear the locket and jump, or you will die.”
I wore the locket but was unwilling to jump—I didn’t believe in the alien. The spaceship was falling rapidly. The alien pushed me.
I started falling towards the Earth and soon entered the atmosphere. I couldn’t breathe and soon fainted (昏厥). When I woke up, it was morning and I was lying in my bed. My mother and some neighbors were talking to the local police. My mom told me that the police saw a bright light in the woods and went to investigate. They found me lying on the ground. The police asked what I was doing there. I told them everything I saw. Then, they went back. I don’t think they believed me.
I remembered about the locket that the alien gave me. It was still around my neck. The locket saved me. I really want to thank the alien with bright eyes!

D.Because this would happen in many of the alien movies he had watched.

(Ned, Conceil and I were taken to the ship. Captain Nemo showed us around. He led us into a room as a museum with a great deal of collection and then took us to the library and the galley (画廊).)
Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and the ship—the Nautilus. Then, he took me to my cabin (房舱). It was a very comfortable bedroom and was next to his cabin. His cabin had an instrument panel (仪表板), and on this he could see everything that he needed to know to sail the Nautilus.
He told me that he had found a way to make electricity using salt and mercury (汞). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps (泵) filled and emptied tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise. I was surprised to find that the Nautilus even had a small dinghy (小艇). Captain Nemo could enter the dinghy from the Nautilus while it was underwater and go to the surface. Then, the Nautilus would come up to collect him. As we walked to the engine room (发动机舱), we passed the large kitchen and crew (船员) room. The door of the crew room was closed, so I could not see how many men were asked to work on the Nautilus.
Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. It was difficult to understand how the tanks, rudders and batteries worked. However, I had to believe it because the engine was working! The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical (圆柱形的) shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500tons. A pilot sat in a small room with strong windows, and a powerful electric light showed him where he was going.
“It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed.
“I love it as if it were my child.” he replied.
“How did you build it in secret ” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops.”
“It must have cost a great deal of money!” I exclaimed again.
“Millions of dollars,” he replied. “However, I have billions.”

My father was busy fixing Belinda’s spaceship all afternoon. In the evening, I went to the landing place. “Dear Father,” I said politely. “Have you found Belinda’s parents yet ”
“Not yet, my dear.” He shook his head.
I felt relaxed. I didn’t want to meet Belinda’s parents — they might be ten times as loud and bossy (专横的) as she was.
But Belinda had followed me.
“Not yet ” she shouted. “Why not I’ll send them a message! They’ll listen to me!”
Belinda ran to the radio. She shouted into it so loudly that I had to cover all my four ears. “Mummy! Daddy! I’m on an awful spaceship full of purple people! Come and find me now!”
“Poor Belinda!” my sister came and said. “Her parents must be missing her.”
“Huh!” I snorted (发出哼声). “Missing her You’re joking! Who would want such a bossy kid back They probably lost her on purpose (故意地).”

“Oh, help!” said Roa. “Is she dying ”
I felt terrible. “Don’t die, Belinda! I didn’t mean it.”
Then Belinda opened her mouth wide and shouted, “What if it’s true What if they’ve gone away and left me here forever ”
We were all so busy comforting Belinda that we didn’t notice the soft knock of a ship landing outside. We didn’t see two tall people come out of until Belinda ran out in excitement.
“Mummy! Daddy!”
Belinda’s parents were even uglier than she was, but they looked polite. “Hello, dear,” the woman said. “We’ re sorry we kept you waiting.”

None of us answered. We waved (挥手) cheerfully as the ship took off and went far away into the stars.

Hai Ya’s story with science fiction began in his childhood. “When I was a child, the bookstore in my hometown helped create a beautiful garden in my mind that belonged to me only. In it, science fiction offered the most beautiful ‘flowers’. Science fiction opened up a new world to him as a kid,” said Hai Ya.
Hai Ya’s works are a mix of history and science fiction. These two styles seem opposite. One looks back at the past, and the other faces the future. However, in Hai Ya’s works, they find a perfect balance.
“If we can only imagine the future and things in space like rockets, it will only limit our imagination. I don’t think history is something completely in the past. It is flowing, and we can look forward to the future by looking back at history. History is also part of our future,” Hai Ya said.
Science fiction lovers in China feel inspired (激发) by Hai Ya. More Chinese writers today are trying to mix traditional culture with modern stories. Hai Ya believes that it is not a choice but a natural process (过程). “Our history and culture have universal values (普世价值) that can touch everyone,” he said.
