Long ago, there was a kind-hearted king in the country of Zhao. He cared deeply for his people.

King Zhao was wearing thick clothes and warming himself by the charcoal (木炭) fire in the palace. Still, he felt a bit cold. Looking at the heavy snow outside the window, he thought in his heart, “I feel so cold even in the warm palace. Those common people must be even colder. How can they get warm through the winter ”

An old man arrived in New York by plane. He came a long way—from eighty miles outside White Horse, Canada. He left the desolate* place for a good reason: to collect his prize. Several days earlier, he had received a colorful document which wrote:
Mr. Peter Finch
Rural Delivery, 33Y
White Horse, Canada
You, Mr. Finch, have won $1,000,000 US dollars
from The American Magazine Company.
A more skeptical* person would have read the small print, but Mr. Finch wasn’t a skeptic. Junk* mail wasn’t junk for him. Since he had no relatives or friends, junk mail was as close to a warm greeting.
Before his journey, Mr. Finch had shown his prize document to the villagers. Everyone was amazed.
He took a taxi from the airport to The American Magazine Company and was led to the receptionist, Betsy Anderson.
“I won the big prize,” Mr. Finch said proudly.
Betsy greeted him. Since they’d already identified all the real winners, obviously Mr. Finch was a loser. But she pretended to carefully check the document.
“I’m afraid you didn’t win, Mr. Finch. I’ve checked the numbers,” Betsy said, “I’m very sorry.”
“But it says that I’ve won,” Mr. Finch replied.
“It’s in the small print. It says that you may have been a winner,” Betsy said.
Mr. Finch didn’t believe it and refused to leave. Betsy had to call the Chairman to come. Mr. Finch told him about how he knew he must have won, and how he had read the magazine for over 50 years. It had helped keep him alive during the cold winters. He told of a thousand uses of the magazine. The American Magazine just couldn’t cheat him, he knew that.
After hours of discussion, the Chairman said they would be happy to pay his air ticket. Indeed, he thought it would be a good idea to do a story on Mr. Finch’s dependence on The American Magazine and would even pay him royalties*.
When Mr. Finch returned home with a photographer and a writer, he became famous. The villagers treated him like a celebrity*. When the story was published, they even bought one hundred magazine copies. Of course Mr. Finch never showed any signs of great wealth. Still, he seemed much happier for having visited New York. He also liked to describe to the villagers the huge building of the famous magazine.
When Mr. Finch, the White Horse Winner, died, he’d always be remembered and his experience filled many dark winters for the people of the desolate area of White Horse.

Marco Polo was one of the world’s most famous explorers. He was born in Venice, Italy in 1254. When he was seventeen years old, he went on a trip to Asia that lasted 24 years. Marco Polo’s travel later affected many people.
In 1271, Marco Polo left Venice with his father and uncle and set out for Asia. The purpose of their trip was to meet with Kublai Khan who ruled a large part of Asia. On their way to meet the king at his palace in China, they traveled through much of the Middle East and Central Asia.
In 1275, they finally arrived at the palace of Kublai Khan. Kublai Khan grew to like Marco Polo very much. In fact, he liked him so much that he wanted Marco Polo to work for him. So the king sent Marco Polo to different places in China, India and Myanmar. Marco Polo stayed in China with Kublai Khan for 17 years. Over that time, he collected many jewels (宝石) and lots of gold.
Marco Polo returned to Venice with his father and uncle in 1295. People often went to Marco Polo’s home to hear stories about his travels. He became a great storyteller. Marco Polo was known as “the man with a million stories”. He later met a writer who was crazy about his stories. The writer liked them so much that he wrote a book about Marco Polo’s travels.
The book about Marco Polo’s travels taught Europeans about places in Asia they knew little about. The book also taught people about the geography of Asia. Some of these people were explorers who used the information in Marco Polo’s book on their own journeys. The best known of these explorers was Christopher Columbus.

He left his home state of Kentucky and traveled across the country, trying to sell his recipe. He even offered the recipe for free, asking for only a small amount of the money that was made from it.
However, most of the restaurants wouldn’t take his offer. In fact, 1,009 restaurants said no. But even so, he didn’t give up. He believed in himself and his chicken recipe. When he visited the 1,010th restaurant, he got a YES. After two years of making daily sales, he signed up (签约) five restaurants.
But the story doesn’t end here. By 1963 he had 600 restaurants across the country selling his secret recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Soon he became a multi-millionaire (千万富翁). But he still worked for KFC, until his death in 1980 at the age of 90.
