Smile Train is a charity (慈善团体) that helps the millions of children around the world, who suffer from a facial defect (缺陷). The defect happens when a baby’s top lip or mouth doesn’t form properly before birth. Eating and drinking is very difficult for these babies. The charity provides free operations, which give these children a new smile, and with it, new hope and a new beginning.
Children with the defect need all the help. Although many sufferers are accepted by their families, sadly, others are not. In some countries, children with this defect are often abandoned at birth because their parents feel ashamed of them or cannot afford the operations. The good news is that the operation is not difficult. It takes less than an hour and costs the family nothing. The charity raises money and finds the right medical volunteers to perform the operations.
A Smile Train doctor from the UK said, “Each child who has the operation is given a second chance at life. After years of staying at home, the children can finally go to school and be happy. Every year I perform hundreds of operations free of cost through Smile Train. Some of the stories I have heard are quite surprising.
One newborn baby girl was found abandoned on a train. Luckily for her, she was found and adopted (收养) by a passenger. This lady then heard about Smile Train and brought the baby to our hospital. As a teenager, you may sometimes feel helpless when you are in conflict (冲突) with your parents. Chen Zanzao, a teenager from Shenzhen, has created a charity community (慈善社团) to offer professional help to families facing similar problems.
Chen’s idea came from the three-child policy. “My friend Sina and I thought it would bring problems like parental favoritism (父母偏心),” Chen said. “Most families still don’t know any methods to deal with this.”
They started to research both scientific parenting styles and people’s needs. They read a lot of books and studies, and surveyed more than 1,000 families. They found that the healthiest family relationships are built when parents take part in their children’s lives properly.
They then started the community to make more people know the idea. “We hold activities and discussions, get our own radio show, and take part in TV programs to encourage the spread of useful information,” Chen said. Chen and his friend Sina would do one-on-one conversations with people who felt embarrassed about sharing their stories. “It’s understandable at first, they need time to trust us since we are young,” Chen said. “But listening is the key, and slowly they will realize that we can help to deal with their problems.”

When I asked the class a question, nobody raised a hand to answer. It made me feel like my class was really boring. That half hour felt like a year. Finally, I finished my introduction, and it was time for the students to practice. I felt better when I saw that they were able to move most of the chess pieces. However, I found they still had some problems with the knight (马) and the pawn (兵). I had to explain the rules again and again. When the class was over, I felt like I was really poor at teaching others.
In the evening, I reflected on (回想) my lesson. What did I do well Why wasn’t my lesson good enough I thought about these questions, and then I practiced more for my second class.
The next day, I felt relaxed. I tried to make my class vibrant and my students showed interest in my lesson. When the class was over, they all wanted to play chess with me. To my surprise, they all played it correctly! This meant they had learned the game successfully and they were interested in playing it! I was happy. My efforts really paid off!
