Water plays an important role in keeping you healthy. This should come as no surprise. Much of your body is made up of water, after all. It keeps your body working properly. But did you know that too much water can poison (毒害) you
Water poisoning happens when people drink too much water. This makes sodium (钠) in their blood too little.
You probably already know that too much sodium can be unhealthy. That’s true, but too little is also harmful. When you have too little sodium in your body, a lot of things will go seriously wrong in your body. Then you will feel really terrible.
Your brain may begin to go wrong. You may get a headache, feel very tired and want to throw up. In these cases, water poisoning can be deadly. You will need to be sent to a hospital right away.
Protecting yourself from water poisoning may seem easy—just don’t drink too much water, right In some situations, however, it is easier said than done. For example, when you do some heavy exercise, such as running a marathon, you may have to drink a lot of water. It is then important to balance the number of water you drink with the number of water your body is losing. This can help you stay healthy whenever you are exercising.
So, how much water should a person drink each day For years, we have been told to drink two liters (升) of water a day. But in fact, the actual number needed is different for each person. Today, most doctors are telling people that they should drink water whenever they feel thirsty. We can’t live without water. Neither can we live with too much water in our bodies. Make sure you take the right number of it each day—staying healthy is all about staying balanced!

Food allergies (过敏) can be very dangerous for people. Their bodies may itch (发痒). They may want to throw up and can even die from allergies. What’s worse, food allergies are becoming more common these days. Kari Nadeau, an allergy expert at Stanford University in the US, did a study of food allergies around the world. She found that while 3 percent of people had them in 1960, the number rose to 7 percent in 2018.
Nadeau said one reason for this might be that we have fewer interactions (相互作用) with microbiota (微生物群). Microbiota can “train” our bodies and stop us from getting allergies.
Our bodies have fewer chances to get close to microbiota these days. We live in cleaner homes. We stay indoors for longer hours. Doctors are using more antibiotics (抗生素) on us as children —antibiotics kill microbiota.
Scientists say it’s a good idea for babies to eat many different kinds of foods so that they can build up tolerance (耐受) in their early years. Having a pet cat or dog can also stop the development of allergies.

As we know, eating vegetables is good for us. Why do some people like them but others don’t A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vegetables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others.
People may make facial expressions (面部表情) when eating. How does it affect a person watching them A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem worried (mother happy but sad), or look disgusted.
The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous.
The research focused only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either.
How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food The team said they hope to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods.

A recent study in a British medical magazine shows that many kinds of foods we enjoy, such as chips, cookies, and ice cream, are all ultra-processed (超加工的). What are ultra-processed foods (UPFs) In short, we can’t re-create them in our kitchen. They are usually made in factories. They have long lists of additives (添加剂)—some we may never have heard of.
The study shows that people may strongly crave such food. We usually can’t stop eating it, or we may feel sad. But why do UPFs make us want to keep eating them all the time Usually, natural foods are either high in sugar or high in fat. UPFs, however, are usually high in both. It makes us feel happier and want to eat more.
It is said that 14 percent of adults and 12 percent of children crazily love UPFs. However, they cause problems to people’s health around the world. Eating too many UPFs will lead to poor diet and increase the risks of serious illness. For example, UPFs lovers are more likely to get heart disease and certain cancers.
Governments are taking action right now. Some governments put taxes (税) on sugary drinks to make them more expensive, so fewer people will buy them. This idea can be used on the UPFs as well. Besides, in order to let people know the dangers of UPFs, these kinds companies are required to print out the additives on their products. Finally, governments are asking companies to use less unhealthy additives in UPFs so that the food can be made healthier.

Chinese people are eating too much salt. On average, people in China eat about 10.5 grams of salt each day, much higher than the 6 grams suggested by Chinese Dietary Guidelines.
China now has one of the highest salt intakes (摄入量) in the world. To solve this, China worked out the first salt reduction guide for its food industry. If the guide is followed properly, the average salt intake for Chinese people will drop by 20 percent by 2030. The guide calls for food companies to lower the content (含量) in their products by improving their production techniques and changing tastes.
The salt we take in mainly comes from processed food. For example, a 104-gram can of potato chips includes about 0.66 grams of salt, which accounts for over 10 percent of the suggested daily salt intake. A 100-gram bag of instant noodles has nearly 2 grams of salt.
A small amount of salt makes food taste better and is important for good health, but eating too much increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart problems and stroke (中风). And there’s no need to worry that food will be less tasty in the future. A study by the Monell Chemical Center found that it’s easy for people to reduce their salt intake. Although you may think your food is not salty enough at first, your taste buds (味蕾) will gradually get used to it and you will feel that your food tastes the same as it did before.
28.How much salt are Chinese people advised to eat on average each day
A.4.5 grams. B.6 grams. C.10.5 grams.
29.What does the underlined word this in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Chinese eat salt much lower than the suggested.
B.China has one of the highest salt intakes in the world.
C.The first Chinese salt reduction guide for its food industry.
30.What can we know according to the Monell Chemical Center
A.People can easily reduce their salt intake.
B.People can taste food with less salt better.
C.People won’t get used to the food that isn’t salty enough.
31.What can be the best title of the text
A.Less Salt for Better Health B.Salt Is Important for Health C.The First Salt Reduction Guide
How many calories (卡路里) are there in every meal you eat That seems like a difficult question to answer. But students at Aitkin High School in the United States can easily answer it now. They put what they eat into an online calorie counter (计算器). It quickly measures the amount of calories in their meals.
In fact, this is part of the school’s health class. It includes heart health, nutrition (营养), and fitness. Students can learn basic knowledge about fats, proteins (蛋白质), calories and sugar.
Students learn how to balance calories in and out. They will know what happens when the balance isn’t there. “The online calorie counter has turned out to be a cool tool to help you make healthy choices. Making one healthy eating decision can really make a difference,” Adam Carlson, the teacher in charge, told local newspaper Aitkin Independent Age.
They also discuss good ways to burn calories in the gym (健身房). According to Carlson, the gym is a great place to burn calories and get stronger. But it doesn’t work for everyone. So they try to find different workout tips. “I’m trying hard to teach the students that working out can be fun, challenging and doesn’t need to take hours out of the day,” she said.
The class has indeed changed students. “I am now watching what I am eating and pay attention to the food labels (标签),” said seventh-grader Karena Burgstaler. Another student James Erickson began to control (控制) his sugar input (摄入量) because it almost went over his daily calorie intake goal.

Walk or drive to work Which way is lower in carbon To be friendly to the environment, you may choose to walk. Have you ever tried to live a low-carbon life through your diet
A new study from the University of Oxford has looked into the health and environmental influences of 15 foods common in western diets. Among these, plant-based foods included fruits, vegetables, nuts and potatoes. It also studied animal-based foods, including red meat, chicken, milk products, eggs and fish.
According to the study’s lead researcher, Michael Clark, “Choosing better and greener diets is one of the main ways people can improve their health and protect the environment.” That is to say, plant-based diets are much healthier for us and kinder to the environment.
To get this result, researchers compared the influence of eating another portion (一份) of each food with the increased risk of a few illnesses. They also find out the environmental harm for each animal-based food and each plant-based food.
By using this method, the study found that red meats were the most unfriendly foods to the environment. Keeping farm animals produces a large number of methane (甲烷) that keeps 30 times more heat than CO2. As well as making the earth warmer, eating too much red meat is known to increase the risk of a few illnesses, such as heart trouble.
Plant-based diets can give us the same health benefits (好处) in a much greener way. According to the study, without eating or using meat and milk products, global farmland use could be cut down by more than 75% and still feed the world.
Speaking to the Guardian (《卫报》), Tim Benton of Chatham House said, “If we can give people reasonable official advice of what a healthy and green diet is, the world and its people would be in a much better place.”

What is the best way to get kids to eat vegetables Well, a school in California has found the answer: make them grow their own at school. The Edible Schoolyard (可食校园) at the Martin Luther King Junior Middle School has been a place where students enjoy growing, cooking and eating vegetables.
Alice Waters came up with the programme, in hope of developing a new way to teach children about healthy eating.
“We have a huge problem of bad eating habits in the United States, and teaching about healthy eating cannot just be left to parents. Schools should do something, too,” Waters said.
She told us how it works. “In the Edible Schoolyard, there is a garden and a kitchen classroom. In the garden, students are the keepers of the garden. They plant and care for the garden. In the kitchen classroom, they learn to cook and eat what they have grown themselves.”
Over their three years, a student will have 60 classes in the programme. Students come to the garden with their science teacher and to the kitchen with their humanities (人文学科) teacher.
“If your kids always complain when they eat carrots, they may feel different after picking some carrots from the ground with their own hands. Some personal participation (参与) might make them love vegetables. That’s the idea behind the Edible Schoolyard,” said Waters.

A new report says people will eat 176 million tons of sugar by 2015. That’s about 20 percent more than that in 2010. While this may be good for the sugar industry, it is not good for the heart. Sugar is close to heart disease.
Dr. Vos shows eating a lot of sugar can make one fat. And that may bring the chance for heart disease. Eating sugar can also do harm to your health.
The researchers studied more than 6,000 adults for at least six years. According to the amount of sugar they ate every day, the volunteers were divided into five groups. The highest group ate an average of 46 teaspoons of sugar. The lowest group ate only about three teaspoons.
“We found that people who ate more added sugar are more likely to have heart disease,” said Dr. Vos.
The researchers say if people want to be far away from heart disease, they should be more aware of how much sugar is in their food, and put it less, if possible. And most American women should not eat more than 100 calories of sugar every day; most men, no more than 150 calories.
