What Is Harvest Harvest is the time of year when crops planted in spring are ready to be collected. Long ago, a good harvest meant there would be enough food for the long winter months. In more modern times, the celebrations of the harvesting fall on the Harvest Festival, which is on the Sunday closest to the Harvest Moon. They include Saint Michael’s Mass on 29th September.
In the past, the arrival of the last crop meant the beginning of the Harvest Supper. A big meal of meats, vegetables, fruits and puddings would be shared by the community. Everyone, old or young, rich or poor, joined in with singing, dancing and games.
In more recent years, the Harvest Festival has been mainly celebrated by schools and other places. Dear David,
How are you these days Today I’m going to tell you something between me and my good friend. Last year, my good friend Carlos invited me to his birthday party. At his party I saw my first pinata (彩盒). It looked like an animal and was full of candies. People put it on the ceiling (天花板). Carlos hit (打) the pinata until it broke. All the candies fell on the floor, and we had a great time eating candies. Everyone shared. It was fun!
Carlos’s birthday party also got me thinking about how kids in other places celebrate birthdays. Did you know that in Vietnam kids do not celebrate on birthdays Instead (相反地), on New Year’s Day, all the kids celebrate their birthdays. Parents give kids red envelopes (信封) with lucky money in them.
In South Africa, kids do not celebrate every birthday. However, on their 21st birthday, their parents make a key. It can be made of paper or wood. Parents give their child this key. It is a sign from the parents that the child can now “unlock the door to their future life”.
In Japan, children get a new set of clothes on their birthdays. While in Italy, adults pull children’s ears—one pull for each year.
My friend Carlos also helps me to know more in many other ways. Do you have such an experience with your friends

Australia Fireworks are necessary in Australia on this day. People celebrate the New Year with midnight fireworks. On this day, people prepare picnic baskets and arrive early to get the best places to see the show.
Japan Just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, Japanese eat noodles. The long noodle means the crossing from one year to the next. It also shows that one lets the past year’s regrets go.
Spain In Spain, with 12 seconds left until the New Year, people eat 12 grapes. They believe that this will bring good luck to them in the coming year. Eating them up means the coming of 12 months of good luck.
Colombia On the last night of a year, Colombians place three potatoes—one peeled, one unpeeled, and one half-peeled potato—under their beds. At midnight, they take out the first potato they touch.
