"Twelve years ago, I was a professional dancer and black belt in taekwondo(跆拳道) when a disease went undiagnosed and wiped out my muscular system. I finally ended up on life support in intensive care with organ failure." Kaufman recalled, "I went from living this big life to not knowing how I was going to survive. Fortunately, on my birthday in 2009, I received a new heart and was given a second chance at life!"
After volunteering in Los Angeles hospitals, Kaufman started the non-profit, Ava's Heart. She and her organization offered transplant patients services that were often not covered by insurance, including food, gas, co-pays on medicines, and housing.
"What I found out was that if you didn't have post-transplant-housing, you couldn't get listed and admitted into the hospital," Kaufman said. She leaned that for the nearly 110,000 people in the US waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, it was not just a matter of adding your name to the list. Patients must be financially secure and be able to afford transportation. What's more, they must find accommodations near their transplant hospital: Kaufman runs two housing locations, which allows the patients to remain close to their transplant hospital during the period of their aftercare, typically about three months at no cost.
Her organization also helps donor families, which she thinks makes the whole circle complete. "One organ donor can save eight lives and then there's tissue and skin and eyes and blood vessels (血管) and so many other things," Kaufman said. "The donor is the whole story. Without the donor, there are no transplant centers, no transplant surgeons, no me. In my eyes, the donors are the heroes."
To date, Ava's Heart has helped nearly 90 families with burial costs for their loved ones whose organs have saved countless lives. Kaufman also works closely with those who receive donations to build relationships with donor families and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.
24.Why did Kaufman take about her memory in Paragraph 1
A. To illustrate the significance of life.
B. To recall her plain and boring days.
C. To indicate her motivation for paying back.
D. To confirm her enthusiasm for the profession.

C. financial security D. afford transportation
26.Which of the following best describes Kaufman
A. Brave and caring. B. Grateful and warm-hearted.
C. Considerate and hardworking. D. Sympathetic and easy-going.
27.What message does the text mainly convey
A. It's better to give than to receive.
B. The blessed bear the heart of giving.

In the effort to document endangered languages around the world, linguists and language enthusiasts have amassed a vast amount of data. Nowadays, most records of these languages are stored digitally, in the form of audio recordings, written transcripts, and online databases. While these resources are invaluable for preserving linguistic diversity, a recent Harvard study has revealed some limitations.
"With the advancement of technology, it's become easier for people to record and share samples of endangered languages," said Dr. Laura Martinez, the lead researcher of the study and a professor of linguistics at Harvard University. "But the sheer volume of these observational records doesn't necessarily mean we have a comprehensive understanding of these languages."
Using a global dataset of over 2 billion language samples, Martinez and her team examined how well these data represent the true complexity and diversity of endangered languages.
"We were particularly interested in the sampling biases," said Martinez. "For example, speakers might be more likely to record formal or ceremonial language, leaving out everyday conversations and dialectal variations."
The study found that the large number of digital records did not guarantee a complete picture. These data were often skewed towards certain regions, social groups, and language functions. This is because the people who contribute to these language databases are usually volunteers or researchers with specific interests, which can introduce biases.
So, what can be done with these imperfect datasets
"Plenty," Martinez explained. "Language preservation apps can use our findings to guide users to record underrepresented aspects of the language, like local idioms and slang. They can also encourage collaboration between different speakers to fill in the gaps in our knowledge."
28.What do we know about the current records of endangered languages
A. They are all handwritten. B. They are mainly digital.
C. They are difficult to access. D. They are only for academic use.
29.What is Dr. Martinez's study concerned with
A. Endangered animals. B. Physical artifacts.
C. Digital language records. D. Language learning apps.
30.What has caused the biases in the data, according to the study
A. Faulty recording equipment. B. Poor translation skills.
C. Unsystematic sampling. D. Inaccurate transcription.
31.What is Dr. Martinez's advice for language preservation apps
A. To limit the number of users. B. To hire professional translators.
C. To provide language courses. D. To direct users to record comprehensively.
D
What's in a name Quite a lot, actually. It's an inseparable part of human identity. However, it turns out that not only humans use names. A new study shows that alongside humans, elephants are the only animals currently known to use names when referring to one another.
It's long been known that African elephants are very social creatures with highly developed brains. They make all sorts of sounds, from low-rumblings, barely hearable to the human ear, to loud trumpeting sounds. It was these sounds, and his previous research on dolphin behavior that led Dr. Mickey Pardo to try and find out if any of those sounds were names. "Sometimes another bottlenose dolphin will copy somebody else's signature whistle in order to get their attention, thus effectively calling them by name," Pardo said. "The idea from the beginning of this project was to try to figure out if elephants have names."
In order to determine if elephants call each other by name, Pardo and his fellow researchers had Artificial Intelligence (AI) analyze the recordings of 469 rumbling noises made by wild African elephants from Kenya between the years 1986 and 2022. They hoped that the recording would contain identifying information, that is to say, a name, for the elephant the rumbling call was made to. The AI identified 469 distinct calls.
The researchers went out into the field. They worked with 17 elephants, mostly female, to see whether they reacted to the recorded sound of their own names. Amazingly, the elephants seemed to know when they were being referred to and they replied quickly and approached the loudspeaker when they listened to recordings that included the distinct call that referred to them.
Another interesting element of the study results is that many of the names seemed to be called by mothers addressing their young. In addition, adult elephants used names more often than young ones. This may indicate that name calling is a skill that takes some time to learn in young elephants.
Unfortunately, the researchers were unable to find out which exact part of the rumbling calls indicated the specific name. Knowing that information would open up a whole new world in terms of our understanding of elephants and their social structure.
32.What inspired Pardo to investigate if elephants use names
A. His observation of elephants' complex social behavior.
B. His knowledge of dolphins' signature whistles.
C. The similarity between elephants' and dolphins' brains.
D. The discovery of a unique language system among elephants.
33.How did the researchers conduct the new study
A. By observing elephants' response to the recorded sound.
B. By comparing the different sounds made by elephants.
C. By using AI to record elephants' reaction to the loudspeaker.
D. By performing laboratory experiments under controlled conditions.
34.What does the study suggest about the use of names among elephants
A. Young elephants use names more frequently than adult ones.
B. Male elephants use names more often than female ones.
C. Elephants' using names is not in their blood but acquired.
D. There's a complex sound system when mother elephants address their young.
35.What's the best title for the text
A. Elephants Call Each Other by Name
B. Elephants Communicate through Sound
C. Elephants Behave like Humans in Many Ways
D. We've Moved One Step Closer to Elephants

My five-year-old daughter Ruthie seemed very small standing at the base of the huge rock-climbing wall as a young employee double-checked her equipment. It was our second time at this indoor crowded climbing gym. On our first visit, Ruthie had begged my husband and me to let her try climbing the wall, but I denied her, afraid that she was undersized.
But life had dramatically changed since then. After receiving a cancer diagnosis (诊断), I felt that my life was too short to deny her a chance. I stood outside the waiting area, watching the employee attach Ruthie to a safety rope. Then he gave her a thumbs-up sign, and my daughter began climbing!
With that rope, she couldn't possibly fall. She might slip, but she wouldn't fall. I was surprised at how she did that so easily and joyfully. "If my cancer is the rock wall, I want to be Ruthie," I thought.
When she touched the ground again, I leaned over the low fence and asked, "How do you do that "
"I just trust the rope. It's very easy," she said with a shrug, and started on her second climbing.
Apparently, if I had known the secret, I could have climbed the wall myself. When I was sixteen, I once failed to climb a rock wall. With added weight and reduced muscle tone, I doubted if I could even do it. I didn't see any other moms trying to climb the wall. Several months earlier, embarrassment would have stopped me from trying. But my cancer did funny things to my brain. It made me realize that I needed to be braver than I thought.
With determination, I decided to try it and the same young employee checked my safety rope and gave me the thumbs-up sign. As I began my climb, I was excited by my own bravery for trying something so new. However, only ten feet up, my fingers and toes started to tire, and there was absolutely no place to rest. My excitement began to disappear and I was afraid that I was going to slip and fall.

解析: W: I’m really glad to see so many people signed up for this training course. With graduation coming up soon, I know that many of you are preparing to enter the workforce for the first time. Job interviews can be an enormously stressful experience, but like most things, interviewing is a skill, not a talent, and a little practice is really important.
I know many of you feel nervous just at the thought of being interviewed, but you need to remember that you’ve been invited for an interview because your potential employers think you’d be suitable for the job. So, first, be confident in yourself. Next, be prepared and professional, which will help you make a strong first impression.
Before an interview, you’d better review your résumé and application. You’ll be needing that later. Once your résumé is solid, then you can start preparing for possible interview questions. I’m going to hand out a list of those questions now. You need to think about how you’d answer each of them. Don’t bother making notes—you can’t bring notes to an interview. OK, that’s all, does anyone have any questions for me

解析:细节理解题,根据第二段中It’s long been known that African elephants are very social creatures with highly developed brains. They make all sorts of sounds, from low-rumblings, barely hearable to the human ear, to loud trumpeting sounds. It was these sounds, and his previous research on dolphin behavior that led Dr. Mickey Pardo to try and find out if any of those sounds were names. “Sometimes another bottlenose dolphin will copy somebody else’s signature whistle in order to get their attention, thus effectively calling them by name,” Pardo said. “The idea from the beginning of this project was to try to figure out if elephants have names.”(正是这些声音,以及他之前对海豚行为的研究,促使米基帕尔多博士试图找出这些声音中是否有名字。

In addition, adult elephants used names more often than young ones. This may indicate that name calling is a skill that takes some time to learn in young elephants.
35.答案: A
解析:主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“A new study shows that alongside humans, elephants are the only animals currently known to use names when referring to one another. (一项新的研究表明,除了人类,大象是目前已知唯——种在相互称呼时使用名字的动物)”可知,本文主要介绍了一项新研究发现大象会使用名字来指代彼此,A项Elephants Call Each Other by Name(大象互相呼唤对方的名字)最能概括文章主旨,适合作文章标题。故选A项。

I realized that even though slipping might make me nervous, I would be perfectly safe. With newfound trust in the rope, I started climbing again. As I continued, my rope caught me many times. And I also reminded myself to be brave. Five minutes later, I was at the top of the wall. I made it!
That day’s successful experience inspired me in my cancer battle. During the medical treatment, I kept telling myself the secret of doing something hard and scary: just trust the rope. My family, my friends, even my doctors could all be the rope that I could rely on all the time. They tried their best to help and support me, just like the rope that had lifted me up that day at the indoor climbing gym. Their love, care and company gave me the courage and confidence in the battle against my cancer.
