Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown's middle-grade trilogy (三部曲). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad ” he tearfully asked me.
The story is set on a remote island, where a robot named Roz learns to survive and communicate with the island's creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered on his own; the first to impact him with the mix of tragedy (悲剧) and joy.
When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our book club discussion, he described how Brown's pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final scene, where Roz leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. His previous reading experiences had cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this book introduced him to the beauty of complex emotions. I tried to explain how sadness can enhance the meaning of happy moments, but failed to fully convince him.
Once our discussion ended, Henry requested to buy The Wild Robot Escapes and instantly fell in love with it. He read the first two books repeatedly, so you can imagine his excitement when we finally got a copy of The Wild Robot Protects. We both agree it is worth the wait. Roz leaves the island again to stop an underwater threat: “the poison tide”. Brown expertly balances between breathtaking adventure and unsettling ideas—not just happiness and sadness, but also, given the climate-change undercurrents, hope and despair.
And, here's something special about Roz: her physical clumsiness and confusion about life, conveyed through her expressive eyes and downturned mouth. Her story reflects the challenges of surviving in a strange place, much like a child's journey. Readers love Roz. They learn from her. Even better, they learn alongside her. Roz gave Henry the power to push through the first book's sad parts, getting him ready to appreciate that, sometimes, sadness isn't a bad thing to feel.
24.What drove the author to read The Wild Robot
A. Its tragic ending. B. Henry's tearful recommendation.
C. Its attractive cover. D. Henry's emotional response to it.
25.What is one theme of The Wild Robot Protects
A. Family and community. B. Concerns of global issues.
C. The exploration of the ocean. D. The man-robot relationship.
26.What makes Roz in the trilogy special
A. Her childlike expressions. B. Her robotic power.
C. Her struggling experiences. D. Her adventurous spirit.
27.Which message does this text seem to communicate
A. Misfortune inspires great literary works.
B. Robot stories work like magic on children.
C. Book discussions help kids survive tragedies.
D. Reading literature facilitates personal growth.
C
Why do we find ugly animals so appealing And what makes odd-looking creatures so cute
Evolution (进化) plays a role. According to Austrian zoologist Konrad Lorenz, human attraction to childish features, such as big eyes, large heads and soft bodies, is an evolutionary adaptation that helps ensure that adults care for their young, guaranteeing the survival of their species. Odd-looking animals such as blobfish, pugs, and bulldogs all share these childish qualities that initiate an affectionate response among humans. And these childish characteristics increase a person's "protective behavior, attention and willingness to care" for the individual and reduce the "likelihood of attacks towards a child", says Marta Borgi, a researcher.
Ugly animals often have other value—some, like the blobfish or the naked mole rat, live in extreme environments that they have adapted to in remarkable ways. Scientists are keen to study these animals to understand whether their biology might provide fresh insights that could lead to treatments for human health conditions such as cancer, heart disease and other deadly diseases.
Our fascination with ugly-cute animals can also be traced back to culturally-based causes. "The ugly-cute thing is very fashionable," says Rowena Packer, a lecturer of animal behavior. "This is partly driven by social media, with many influential people showing off pet pugs and French bulldogs on the Internet," she says.
But there are some serious welfare concerns around this trend. Vets are urging people not to choose flat-faced dogs, because they suffer from serious health problems. Pugs and French bulldogs which have been selectively produced experience breathing difficulties, repeated skin infections and eye diseases.
We may want to rethink our love for "ugly-cute" animals because of their silly features like protruding(鼓出的) eyes and wrinkly faces.
28.Why do people like ugly animals according to Konrad Lorenz
A. People appreciate their efforts to survive.
B. People appreciate their super adaptability.
C. People are attracted by their childish looks.
D. People are fond of their fast response speed.
29.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. What media are changing people.
B. How public practices influence people.
C. Whether social media is worth believing.
D. Why celebrities show off their pet animals.
30.What's the author's attitude towards people's love for ugly animals
A. Opposed. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Cautious.
31.How does the author mainly answer the questions raised in paragraph 1
A. By quoting different researchers' findings.
B. By showing some examples of keeping pets.
C. By observing people's behavior towards animals.
D. By referring to authoritative evolutionary theory.
D
Out in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 60 miles off the northwest coast of Africa, lie the Canary Islands. In the 1950s, the boom in package tourism showed promise as a new cash crop. But while the Canary Islands had the sunshine, warm climate and ease of access from Europe needed for this new industry, they were missing a vital element—picture-postcard sandy beaches.
So the developers on Tenerife in the Canary Islands constructed a breakwater (防波堤) over half a mile long. And then, from the Western Sahara on Africa's northwest coast, they shipped in 270, 000 tons of sand. By 1973, the project was complete. As anticipated, tourists arrived. Along the engineered beach, rows and rows of tourists relax on beach chairs under umbrellas or walk across soft sand to cool down in the water.
Unanticipated was what their presence gave to one of the world's most endangered fish species, angel sharks—visibility. The gentle wind creates tiny waves on the water's surface, a magical cover for what lies beneath—an angel shark nursery. Female angel sharks regularly migrate(迁徙) to these ideally sheltered waters to give birth to pups(幼小动物), who remain in the shallows for about a year. Feeding on small fishes, they grow to around the same length as a newborn human baby.
Surveys have shown that other beaches in the Canary Islands are also potential nursery sites. Interestingly, most of them have been remade to make them more attractive to people. Playa Chica has another long sweep of imported sand. It's an attraction for divers as well as angel sharks, so the number of sightings of mature angel sharks of this shoreline is one of the highest in the islands.
Normally, massive, environmentally disruptive projects are bad for wildlife. But what's clear is that after the breakwater was built and the sand arrived, people followed, and in the calm, shallow waters they began to see baby angel sharks. And unlike the cases where an association between humans and wildlife ended in conflict and dead animals, this time it led to conservation.
32.Why did the developers on Tenerife carry out the project
A. To build a base for shipping. B. To fight against the rising sea.
C. To boost the local tourism industry. D. To protect the island's ecosystem.
33.What was an unexpected result of the project
A. It gave angel sharks a home.
B. It made a magical tourist attraction.
C. It caused the disappearance of some fishes.
D. It created conflict between sharks and tourists.
34.What is the author's attitude toward the engineered beach
A. Intolerant. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Favorable.
35.What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To highlight the financial benefits of tourism.
B. To explain the situation of endangered species.
C. To introduce potential human-wildlife coexistence.
D. To emphasize the importance of wildlife conservation.

George had his eyes on a scoring record. He took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. The gym was old and small, but it held a long history. "Maybe today I'll make history," George thought.
His basketball league was celebrating. Today's championship game marked its 50th anniversary(周年纪念) since the league's first championship.
George looked over the brochure for the anniversary. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped suddenly when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. He quickly went through the rest of the list. "Look!" he said to his teammate David, showing him the brochure. "You see who has the all-time record My dad! He never told me that."
"24 points," David said. "That's awesome!"
George's best record was 19 points. He was the Badgers' top scorer. "It seems that my dad never showed off something like that," George said.
When his parents arrived, George brought the brochure over to them. His dad laughed. "I didn't miss a shot in that game. But look at the score. I would have traded every shot for a win," he said with regret. George hadn't noticed that his dad's team had lost the game just by one point. "That was a great group of teammates," his dad added. "You have great teammates in the Badgers, too."
As George warmed up, he was still digesting his father's words. "This will be a struggle every second," the coach emphasized before they got on court to play. "I want to see tough defense, sharp passing, and, above all, smart play as a team.
George was confident he could lead the Badgers to victory, just as he did in their previous games against the Lions. And he played really hard. As the game neared its end, George had already scored 23 points. Another basket would break his father's scoring record.

第一部分 听力
1.答案:A
解析:M: Hey, Sarah. Your uncle told me you were hurt yesterday. Is that true
W: No, Matt. I went snowboarding yesterday and my whole body ached. And I never want to go again.
M: Don't worry too much about it. You'll feel the fun of snowboarding after some practice.
2.答案:A
解析:M: Kitty, that's a great kite. Did you make it by yourself
W: No, my elder brother made it for me.
M: My father had promised to make one for me but he was always busy. My mother said I couldn't depend on him.
3.答案:B
解析:W: Congratulations! Before you bring the car home, you have a few papers to sign up, and remember to put air in your tires once every two months.
M: That's six times a year, and it takes about five minutes each time. Anyhow, I'll try, since running on a flat tyre is as dangerous as drunk driving.
4.答案:C
解析:W: Did you get the invitation to my party, Robert
M: The invitation came in the mail yesterday. Unfortunately, I can't go to your party. My uncle is visiting that day. The next party you have, I promise I will be there.
W: What if your uncle visits again
M: Thankfully, he only comes once a year.
5.答案:C

M: Yes. Look at the ticket. It should have a website on it.
W: Oh, let me get the ticket. It's in my car.

M: You're right about the service. I think 20 percent.
W: Twenty percent That's a bit high, isn't it

第二节
答案:
However, his team was now one point behind the Lions. The pressure mounted as the final seconds ticked away on the game clock. George got the ball and he could feel the weight of his father's glory on his shoulder. And here came the final attack of the Badgers. Knowing what the Badgers' top scorer was capable of, the Lions tried to defend the lead by surrounding George. With the ball in his possession, he saw David, positioned perfectly for a shot. In a split-second decision, George passed the ball to his teammate, trusting in David's ability to make the crucial play.
With no defenders around, David turned and shot at the basket. The ball sailed through the air, tracing a beautiful curve before eventually swishing through the net. The gym erupted into cheers as the referee blew the whistle, signaling the end of the game. George's heart raced as he realized what had just happened. With that basket, his team secured the victory, but personally, he failed to achieve his goal of breaking his father's scoring record. However, as he glanced at his father's approving gaze from the sidelines, George felt a profound sense of accomplishment. In that moment, he understood that while individual achievements are noteworthy, the true essence of victory lies in playing as a team.
