When you are little, the whole world feels like a big playground. I was living in Conyers, Georgia the summer it all happened. I was a second grader, but my best friend Stephanie was only in the first grade. Both of our parents were at work and most of the time they let us go our own way.
It was a hot afternoon and we decided to have an adventure in Stephanie's basement. As I opened the basement door, before us lay the biggest room, full of amazing things like guns, dolls, and old clothes. I ran downstairs, and spotted a red steel can. It was paint. I looked beyond it and there lay even more paint in bright colors like purple, orange, blue and green.
"Stephanie, I just found us a project for the day. Get some paintbrushes. We are fixing to paint. "She screamed with excitement as I told her of my secret plans and immediately we got to work. We gathered all the brushes we could find and moved all of our materials to my yard. There on the road in front of my house, we painted big stripes(条纹) of colors across the pavement(人行道). Stripe by stripe, our colors turned into a beautiful rainbow. It was fantastic!
The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn't wait to show her my masterpiece. The car pulled slowly into the driveway and from the look on my mother’s face, I could tell that I was in deep trouble.
My mother shut the ear door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring, she shouted, "What in the world were you thinking I understood when you made castles out of leaves, and climbed the neighbors' trees, but this! Come inside right now!" I stood there glaring back at her for a minute, angry because she had insulted(侮辱) my art.
"Now go clean it up!" Mother and I began cleaning the road. Tears ran down my cheeks as I saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement.
Though years have now passed, I still wonder where my rainbow has gone. I wonder if, maybe when I get older, I can find my rainbow and never have to brush it away. I guess we all need some sort of rainbow to brighten our lives from time to time and to keep our hopes and dreams colorful.

A. To introduce Stephanie to her. B. To prevent her from seeing his painting.
C. To show his artwork to her. D. To put the materials back in the yard.
25.In his mother's eyes, the writer ________.

C. was a problem solver D. always caused trouble
26.The underlined word "rainbow" in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A. something imaginative and fun B. the stripes on the pavement
C. the rainbow in the sky D. important lessons learned in childhood
27.It can be learned from the passage that parents should ________.
A. encourage children to paint
B. value friendship among children
C. protect rather than destroy children's dreams
D. discover the hidden talent in children
C
It is no accident that so many fairy tale characters find themselves having to cross dangerous areas of woodland. In a most practical sense, as the ancients dreamed up those stories and even when the oral traditions were finally written down in the middle ages and later, the lands of northern and western Europe were thick with woodland. The dangers were obvious: from robbers lying in wait for unsuspecting travelers to opportunistic wolves hungry for the kill.
In many cultures, the forest is for god or ancestor worship. In An Illustrated Encyclopaedia Of Traditional Symbols, JC Cooper writes, "Entering the Dark Forest or the Enchanted Forest is a threshold(门槛) symbol: the soul entering the dangers of the unknown; the world of death; the secrets of nature, or the spiritual world which man must go through to find the meaning."
The forest is a place of magic then, magic that can be dangerous, but also a place of opportunity and transformation. In the tale of Beauty and the Beast, the merchant is directed by invisible forces within the forest to the Beast’s castle, only then to be directed by invisible hands to his fate.
As for Little Red Riding Hood, straying from(偏离) the path and into the woods is similarly dangerous and filled with treachery(背叛). Symbolically, those who lose their way in the uncharted forest are losing their way in life, losing touch with their conscious selves and voyaging into the state of the subconscious.
And yet, in legends such as Robin Hood, or the great Hindu love story of Rama and Sita, the forest becomes a hiding place. The forest provides refuge(庇护) for great heroes who after a period of hard time come back to fight for justice. Their time in the forest could perhaps be interpreted as a period of personal development.
Today, still, woodland remains as a refuge from institutional order, from control and limitation of personal freedom. Forests are places full of mystery, where imagination and the subconscious can run free, where we can return to our original selves.
28.What does the author think of the woodland dangers in fairy tales
A. They are created without reasonable basis.
B. They are a reflection of real-life dangers.
C. They differ greatly from those in real life.
D. They are apparent and can be easily avoided.
29.What does JC Cooper stress with her words in paragraph 2
A. The hidden dangers in the forest. B. The symbols in different cultures.
C. The symbolic meaning of the forest. D. The educational functions of the forest.
30.The woodland plays the role of a shelter for the hero in ______.
A. Rama and Sita
B. Beauty and the Beast
C. Little Red Riding Hood
D. An Illustrated Encyclopaedia Of Traditional Symbols
31.How is the text developed
A. By following time order. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By explaining a principle.
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-
held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations(估算) for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings(隆隆声) in the Earth. This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. "You don’t see earthquakes coming," explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). "It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help reduce economic and human losses and has the potential to greatly improve earthquake preparation worldwide."
While it is unknown whether the same way will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more right predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake stations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes. Eventually, the researchers hope to combine the system with physics based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. "That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward," concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
32.How does the AI forecast earthquakes
A. By identifying data from the satellites.
B. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
C. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
D. By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
33.What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 2
A. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
34.What does the follow-up research focus on
A. Conducting tests in different locations.
B. Applying the AI to other fields.
C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
35.Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology
A. Stable but outdated. B. Effective but costly.
C. Potential and economical. D. Pioneering and promising.
Handwriting is an essential skill for both children and adults. The following reasons demonstrate why it is very important to have good handwriting throughout life.
When in childhood, handwriting activates the brain more than keyboarding. 36._____ Good handwriting contributes to reading fluency because it activates visual perception(感观) of letters. Handwriting is a predictor of success in other subjects, because good handwriting has a positive impact on grades.
Cursive writing(草书) helps students, both young and old, with dyslexia(读写困难). 37._____ Also it can feel very uncomfortable and disjointed writing in print. Cursive writing offers each letter a very different look and allows the pupil to write in a flowing, comfortable way. This can decrease their dyslexic tendencies and make them more confident in their abilities.
As children get older, many standardized assessments are based on written work, particularly in time-limited written examinations. 38._____ Good handwriting remains as a major form of assessment for many formal qualifications.
39._____ Otherwise, pupils will achieve lower marks, even where the content may be good. Many state-standardized assessments and handwritten essays emphasize the importance of handwriting.
People are judged by their handwriting even after getting into adulthood. Good handwriting is essential long after graduation. In our modern world, in all walks of life—making a shopping list, writing a birthday card, taking down a phone message, completing a form at the bank, filling out immigration forms—handwriting is part of our daily lives. 40._____
A. Good handwriting is essential throughout life.
B. Examiners need to distinguish what is written.
C. Good handwriting shows the writer’s good personality.
D. This is because it involves more complex motion and learning skills.
E. Consequently, it is on show to others and may be used to make judgments about us.
F. Children can have a very hard time with writing in print because many letters look similar.
G. Without fast and clear handwriting, students may get low grades and fall behind.

Two days before Christmas, I got a call from my old and sometimes forgetful mom, "I sold my towels and made $ 200, two 100-dollar bills!" "That’s amazing," I said, glad that people bought the decorative towels she had made day and night.
For months, Mom had been making towels to sell at the local yearly holiday craft fair. "They bought every single one," she said. "Now I have money to buy Christmas presents for the girls on the fifth floor of my apartment building."
After having dinner on that happy snowy evening, Mom went to the grocery store to buy a bag of food for breakfast, Later, she safely drove back home. At 9:30 that night, I received a second call from her. She cried, "I lost all $ 200 I had earned. My Christmas is ruined." "Don’t worry, Mom," I said, completely unaware that she had gone out in the snow.
I told her I would drive to her place in the morning and that we would find it. "No. It’s gone. It was in my pocket when I went to the store. But when I checked it tonight, it wasn’t there," she said. "I searched my car. Then, I drove back to the store to see if I left it there. But it wasn’t there. Then, I walked through the parking lot, looking for it but it wasn’t anywhere."
My heart broke at the thought of her going out on the snowy and windy night, "It’ll be OK, Mom," I comforted her. "I’ll give you two 100-dollar bills..." However, I knew that wasn’t what Mom wanted.
It took me several hours to drive to Mom’s apartment the following morning. But before I got there, she had already driven back to the grocery store again even without having breakfast. She called me to tell me to wait for her in her apartment and she said she would be back soon.
With tears in her eyes, she shared her story about the money she had earned with the store manager and asked if he could check any other places for her two 100-dollar bills.

14.答案:C
15.答案:B
16.答案:C
解析:M: Lily, did you need to spend a lot of time practicing windsurfing before you’re good at it
W: There’s certainly a lot to learn, but I suppose it depends on the individual in terms of their fitness, previous experience, and of course how much effort they put in. Interestingly, the equipment doesn't seem to make much difference to the progress beginners can make.
M: What in particular helped you progress
W: Well, I didn’t make the mistake of thinking that I could teach myself to windsurf, or that I could learn from a friend. Instead I signed up for a six-month course, and it was money well spent.
M: Tell me, what is it about windsurfing that gives you most pleasure
W: Oh, lots of things, such as becoming physically fitter, or doing things I’d never tried before. But if I had to choose one, it would be the way that it lets you empty your mind of all the stress and concerns of daily life, and just enjoy being out there on the water.
M: Lily, how do you see your future in windsurfing
W: Well, I’ve thought of coaching but that would mean spending a lot of time in pools. The place I like to be is the open sea, perhaps racing other people. In fact, that’s probably what I’ll do. I may not win any prizes but I’ll certainly enjoy it.
17.答案:A
18.答案:A

20.答案:B
解析:Hello, my name is Harris. I ordered a pool table online from you last Tuesday and it arrived three days later. I was amazed and happy at the speed of service. But then the problems started unfortunately.
The first problem is that the instructions included were written only in Spanish and Polish. I can’t believe you wouldn’t include the instructions in English. Anyway, I managed to follow the diagrams and get the pool table put together in about two hours.
Once I had put it together, I noticed the white ball wasn’t in the bag of balls. How am I able to play any games without the white ball Luckily, a friend of mine came over with his white ball and we were able to play a game. However, the roll of the balls was not very true—they kept bending to the left or the right. I don’t really know enough about pool tables to know what the problem could be.
You can reach to me on my home phone number: 348-28841. Or send me an email to tell me how you will resolve these problems. I am also going to write a letter and post it to your head office as I think it’s important to have this complaint down in writing.
A
根据第一段第一句中的"you are considering Marist School for your child's next chapter"可知,本文是写给考虑Marist学校的学生家长的;根据第一段第二句中的"Marist has two primary entry points for students in 7th and 9th grades"可以推断,要进入7年级和9年级的学生现在正在6年级和8年级。
22.答案: A
Ravenna, an application management system, for all aspects of the admissions process"可知,Ravenna是一个用于录取过程方方面面的申请管理系统,由此可知,它是处理入学申请的,故选A。
February 1, 2024: Deadline for Marist to receive... teacher and administrator evaluations"可知,2024年2月1日之前可以提交教师评估,选项中早于该日期的是A项和B项;结合表格第一行的"September 2023-March 2024"和常识可知,2023年九月之前申请活动未开始,排除A项;2024年1月26日比较可能,故选B。
B
I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn’t wait to show her my masterpiece."
My mother shut the ear door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring, she shouted, "What in the world were you thinking " (我妈妈关上了耳门,向我走来。她瞪着眼睛喊道:"你到底在想什么 )可以推断出,母亲特别反感作者的一些行为,所以很生气,认为作者是一个麻烦制造者。故选D。
26.答案:A
故选A。
It is no accident that so many fairy tale characters find themselves having to cross dangerous areas of woodland. In a most practical sense, as the ancients dreamed up those stories and even when the oral traditions were finally written down in the middle ages and later, the lands of northern and western Europe were thick with woodland .The dangers were 0bvious:from robbers lying in wait for unsuspecting travelers to opportunistic wolves hungry for the kill.(许多童话人物发现自己不得不穿越危险的林地,这并非偶然。
In many cultures, the forest is for god or ancestor worship. In An Illustrated Encyclopaedia Of Traditional Symbols, JC Cooper writes, "Entering the Dark Forest or the Enchanted Forest is a threshold(门槛) symbol: the soul entering the dangers of the unknown; the world of death; the secrets of nature, or the spiritual world which man must go through to find the meaning."(在许多文化中,森林是用来祭祀神灵或祖先的。
30.答案:A
And yet, in legends such as Robin Hood, or the great Hindu love story of Rama and Sita, the forest becomes a hiding place. The forest provides refuge(庇护) for great heroes who after a period of hard time come back to fight for justice .Their time in the forest could perhaps be interpreted as a period of personal development.(然而,在像罗宾汉这样的传说中,或者印度伟大的《罗摩与西塔》的爱情故事中,森林变成了一个藏身之处。 故选A。
The Al was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team's knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the Al provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings(隆隆声)in the Earth..(人工智能根据团队的地震物理知识获得了一组统计特征,然后被指示使用五年的地震记录数据库进行自我训练。
This work is clearly a milestone in research for Al-driven earthquake prediction......Even with the 70%accuracy, that's a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide."(这项工作显然是人工智能驱动地震预测研究的一个里程碑。即使有70%的准确率,这也是一个巨大的结果,有助于最大限度地减少经济和人员损失,并有可能显著改善全球的地震准备工作)可知,这项工作显然是人工智能驱动地震预测研究中的一个里程碑。由此推知,Alexandros Savvaidis旨在说明开发人工智能预测地震的重要性。故选C项。
34.答案:D
解析:细节理解题。根据第四段中的The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT's Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake stations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.(下一步是在得克萨斯州测试人工智能,因为UT的TexNet局有300个地震站和超过六年的连续记录,使其成为实现这些目的的理想地点)可知,研究人员接下来是在德克萨斯州测试人工智能,因为德州大学的地震监测网络局拥有
故选A项。
This work is clearly a milestone in research for Al-driven earthquake prediction'"(这项工作显然是人工智能驱动地震预测研究的一个里程碑)以及"Even with the70%accuracy,that's a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.(即使有70%的准确率,这也是一个巨大的结果,有助于最大限度地减少经济和人员损失,并有可能显著改善全球的地震准备工作)"可知, A1在地震预测方面的应用是一个里程碑式的研究成果。该技术可以帮助减少经济和人力损失,并有望显著改善全球地震预防工作。由此推知,该地震预测技术是富有开创性和前景很好的。故选D项。

38. 语境衔接题。本段承接上段,继续讨论书写在测试评估中的作用。根据空前一句As children get older, many standardized assessments are based on written work, particularly in time-limited written examinations.(随着孩子年龄的增长,许多标准化的评估都是基于书面作业,特别是在有时间限制的笔试中。) Without fast and clear handwriting, students may get low grades and fall behind.(没有快速清晰的书写,学生可能会得到低的评分,会落后。)
Otherwise, pupils will achieve lower marks, even where the content maybe good. Many state-standardized assessments and handwritten essays emphasize the importance of handwriting.(否则,即使内容可能很好,学生也会得到较低的分数。 Examiners need to distinguish what is written.(测试者需要辨别写的是什么。)
In our modern world, in all walks of life - making a shopping list, writing a birthday card, taking down a phone message, completing a form at the bank, filling out immigration forms—handwriting is part of our daily lives.(我们的现代社会,在各行各业——制作购物清单,写生日贺卡,记下电话留言,在银行填写表格,填写移民表格——书写是我们日常生活的一部分。)可知,书写是我们日常生活的一部分,E项Consequently, it is on show to others and may be used to make judgments about us.(因此,它是向别人展示的,可能被用来评判我们。)是对上句的进一步展开,表明书写可被用于对我们作出评判。故选E。

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
The manager began searching for my mom’s money. After hearing her story, he was deeply moved and immediately organized his staff to conduct a thorough search. They checked the store’s security cameras, scrutinized the parking lot, and even searched the aisles where my mom had been shopping. To everyone’s surprise, they found nothing. Just when my mom was about to lose hope, the manager suggested checking the bag of food she had purchased. "Maybe the money accidentally fell into the bag when you were packing your items," he speculated. Hearing that, my mother called me immediately and asked me to check the bag.
Paragraph 2:
I took the food out of the bag and saw two 100-dollar bills in the bag, wondering how Mom had found her money in the grocery store. Mom was overjoyed, tears streaming down her face. She hugged the manager tightly, thanking him profusely. It turned out that the money had indeed accidentally slipped into the bag during the packing process. This unexpected discovery not only restored my mom’s Christmas spirit but also deepened her faith in humanity. The manager’s kindness and empathy had brought a happy ending to this Christmas tale, reminding us all of the true spirit of the season: love, compassion, and the willingness to help others.
