In middle school, I was one of the “gifted” kids. For those three short years, I felt like I was on top of the world.
Then high school began. All of a sudden, I was no longer at the top of my class. My papers were filled with corrections, not praise.
My parents didn’t understand. From what they had known about me when I was younger, they thought that I was perfect, and so I had to be perfect all the time. Their concern grew — they began to search for private teachers and would often talk to me, trying to find out what was wrong with me. My concern grew too — the pressure to live up to their expectations only became greater. I found myself worrying about school all the time. I even questioned myself — who was I, if not the perfect student
Watching Simone Biles pull out of the Olympics made me think of myself. Simone Biles was the GOAT
(greatest of all time). If there was any person we knew we could count on to win, it was Simone.
Unlike me, Simone recognized the pressure she was under. She had the bravery and self- reflective skills to be able to realize that the pressure of perfection was too much for her. Simone Biles has taught me a very important lesson: to be the greatest person of all time, mental health must come first. Instead of getting down on myself for not becoming the best, I need to learn from Simone and be kind to myself by taking a break or even asking for help if need be.
24. How did the author feel in high school
A. Bored and tired. B. Nervous and anxious. C. Confident and proud. D. Excited and surprised.
25. What can we say about the author’s parents
A. They had great expectations of the author. B. They fully understood the author’s situation.
C. They managed to lower the author’s pressure. D. They pushed the author to learn from Simone Biles.
26. How did Simone Biles influence the author
A. She encouraged the author never to give up.
B She taught the author useful self- reflective skills.
C. She showed the author the true meaning of perfection.
D. She made the author realize the value of mental health.
27. What is the best title for this text
A. Pressure: how much is too much
B. Simone Biles: the GOAT of the Olympics
C. Simone Biles, me, and the pressure of perfection
D. How do schools improve the mental health of students
C
The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains have developed in this way because threats, like dangerous animals, have a more immediate effect on people’s survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you clearly know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy
Research suggests that our level of happiness is partly shaped by the choices we make. If you’ve been chasing wealth fame, power and some material things, you may be looking for happiness in the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following habits can make people happier.
People who own close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of our friends is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually consist of the sharing of feelings, acceptance, mutual (互相的) respect and trust.
People who exercise regularly can improve both their physical and mental well- being. Some research has shown that exercise can be as effective as some medicine in treating depression.
If we are so interested in an activity, we may lose track of time, and we can be in a state of flow. The activity could be playing the piano, surfing the Internet or playing a game... People who experience flow in their work or life tend to be happier.
People are more likely to be happy if they know what their strengths are and can use them regularly. People are especially happy when they can set goals and use their strengths to achieve them.
People, who think positively by being grateful, mindful and optimistic, are more likely to be happy. Being grateful means being thankful. Being mindful means considering, focusing on, and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful about the future.
28. Why do human brains remember negative things more easily
A. Because negative things are easy to remember.
B. Because negative things can make people live much happier.
C. Because negative things are much more important than other things.
D. Because negative things tend to affect human survival immediately.
29. According to this passage, in which of the following can people not find happiness
A. Chasing power. B. Doing sports.
C. Playing the violin. D. Making friends.
30. In the last paragraph, what does the author try to tell us
A. We should think more about our future. B. We should be positive in our life and work.
C. We should focus on everything in our life. D. We should only enjoy the present moment.
31. What does the passage mainly want to tell us
A. Some habits that make people happy. B. The habits people form in their life.
C. Why people remember positive things easily. D. Why people remember negative things easily.
D
Over the last seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.
Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse. Americans are still texting while driving, as well as using social networks and taking photos. Road accidents, which had fallen for years, are now rising sharply.
That is partly because people are driving more, but Mark Rosekind, the chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said distracted(分心)driving was "only increasing, unfortunately."
"Big change requires big ideas." he said in a speech last month, referring broadly to the need to improve road safety. So to try to change a distinctly modern behavior, lawmakers and public health experts are reaching back to an old approach: They want to treat distracted driving like drunk driving.
An idea from lawmakers in New York is to give police officers a new device called the Textalyzer. It would work like this: An officer arriving at the scene of a crash could ask for the phones of the drivers and use the Textalyzer to check in the operating system for recent activity. The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York's hands-free driving laws.
"We need something on the books that can change people's behavior,” said Félix W. Ortiz, who pushed for the state's 2001 ban on hand-held devices by drivers. If the Textalyzer bill becomes law, he said, "people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone."
32. Which of the following best describes the ban on drivers' texting in the US
A. Ineffective. B. Unnecessary.
C. Inconsistent. D. Unfair.
33. What can the Textalyzer help a police officer find out
A. Where a driver came from. B. Whether a driver used their phone.
C. How fast a driver was going. D. When a driver arrived at the scene.
34. What does the underlined word "something" in the last paragraph refer to
A. Advice. B. Data. C. Tests. D. Laws.
35. What is a suitable title for the text
A. To Drive or Not to Drive Think Before You Start
B. Texting and Driving Watch Out for the Textalyzer
C New York Banning Hand-Held Devices by Drivers.
D. The Next Generation Cell Phone: The Textalyzer-

One of the most obvious ways the family shapes us is through genetics (遗传). From an early age, we learn the habits, beliefs, and values of our family members. ____38____ We may not share all the same views as our parents or grandparents, but their influence is still there. In many ways, this influence is even stronger than genes when it comes to who we become as people.
____39____ The way our parents treat us and each other has a huge influence on how we see the world and how we treat the people around us. If we grow up in a household where we’re shown love and respect, we are more likely to show love and respect to others.
There’s no clear- cut answer to the question of nature or nurture (培养). ____40____ But many other factors (因素) also play a role. By understanding how our family shapes us, we can develop a deeper understanding of our own lives and relationships.

Ollie Simmons was good at maths, but Ruby Riley wasn’t. Well, Ruby didn’t think she was. She sat next to Ollie and so she just copied him. This was the best way she had found to do maths and she didn’t have to think at all.
One day the teacher said, “We will be having a maths test after lunch.” Ruby felt there were butterflies in the stomach. “Can I copy off you ” she whispered to Ollie. Ollie thought for a minute. “What will you give me ” he whispered back. Ruby showed Ollie a stone she had. It was round and smooth and the colour of the sea. “OK!” he said, “Give me the stone, and then you can copy my answers.” Ollie got full marks in the maths test and so did Ruby. Their names went on the top of the maths champion chart.
Every week there was a maths test and every week Ollie and Ruby got full marks together. Ollie had to share the top place with Ruby, but it was worth it. He had a torch, a key chain, a golf ball and a gift box!
One day, there was a maths test again. This time, Ruby picked a watch, thinking everything would go as usual—Ollie would let her copy and they would be on the top of the chart together again. But she was wrong. The headmaster came into Ruby’s class. “I want to see Ollie Simmons,” she said. Ollie was gone for a long time. Then the door opened. It was the headmaster again. “Ruby Riley,” she said, “Come with me, please.” Ruby felt like a bird in a cage—there was no way to escape. The headmaster told Ruby that every lunchtime for five weeks she had to do maths. “You have to learn to think for yourself,” she said. “And Ollie has to learn a lesson, too. He’s going to teach you.”

I am more than delighted to know that you have learnt Chinese calligraphy. Calligraphy is the essence of Chinese culture, which has developed into a special high-level art apart from satisfying the needs of daily writing.
It is rather valuable for it is like a window to better understand the Chinese culture. Thus, I advise that you shouldn't give it up.
I do believe you are such a hard-working girl that it will be easy for you to make it. Here are my sincere suggestions. To begin with be patient. The more you practice, the more confident you will be. Moreover, calm down. It is no use being upset when meeting problems. Take a deep breath and go on, and everything will go smoothly in the future.
I do hope you can take my words into consideration. Wish you success in learning.
Yours,
Li Hua

Hanging her head down, Ruby felt so regretful for getting Ollie into trouble. She realized it was her fault that put them into such a shameful situation. “I am so sorry that I’d like to make a sincere apology to you.” Ruby said to Ollie with tears rolling down her cheeks. Hearing this, Ollie felt ashamed with his cheeks burning and said, “I should also take the responsibility for the matter. To make up for this fault, I will try my best to help you.” Ruby wiped her tears and was determined to spare no effort to learn maths with Ollie.
Ollie proved to be a good teacher for Ruby. He was always ready to help whenever Ruby met with difficulties. As time went by, with the assistance of Ollie, Ruby gradually made great progress in maths. Eventually, they both got full marks in the final examination once again. The headmaster praised them for the progress they had made. It was at the moment that they really felt proud of themselves. What an unforgettable and meaningful experience, which taught them a lesson of honesty and true friendship.
