In many English-speaking countries, people often use some idioms related to animals. These idioms not only add color to the language but also reflect the cultural background of the speakers. Here are some common animal idioms and their meanings.
“A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”
This idiom means that it is better to hold onto something you already have than to risk losing it by trying to get something better that may not be possible to obtain. For example, if you have a job offer that is good enough, it may be wiser to accept it rather than waiting for a better offer that may never come.
“It's raining cats and dogs.”
This idiom is used to describe very heavy rain. The origin of this phrase is not entirely clear, but some theories suggest that it may have come from the idea that heavy rain could cause cats and dogs to seek shelter and seem to be falling from the sky.
“The early bird catches the worm.”
This idiom encourages people to be early or prompt. It implies that those who are early or take action quickly will have an advantage or get a reward. For example, if you want to get a good seat in a theater or on a bus, you should arrive early like the early bird.
“Let the cat out of the bag.”
This idiom means to accidentally reveal a secret. For example, if you tell someone a secret that you were supposed to keep, you have let the cat out of the bag.

A small recording room outside the Congolese capital Kinshasa has become a safe space for homeless teenagers. They sing about their life on the streets and dream of a better future. The homeless sing about their childhood, living conditions, and living experiences at the Mokili Na Poche cultural center. It is a safe space that allows young people and children to wash and eat.
“It really makes me happy when I sing,” said 19-year-old Mavakala. He has slept on the streets for years. There are more than 20,000 homeless children in Kinshasa. Other teenagers looked on with happiness as Mavakala turned on the recording equipment at the center in late August.
Mavakala dreams of bigger goals after having the chance to record in a real recording space. He said, “It stimulates me and I tell myself — ah, life belongs to (属于) brave persons.” He added that U. S. rapper Lil Wayne and Congolese star Fally Ipupa influenced his music.
He has been coming to the center for the past three years, taking part in the music, art, and reading classes it offers throughout the day. Founder Cedrick Tshimbalanga hopes these skills and daily experiences will help the children build a base for their life and their voices.
“With music, young people are able to talk about their daily experience — everything they live through daily: happiness and sadness,” said Tshimbalanga, who plans to release (发行) their music soon.
The classes are also a chance for young people to make up for lost chances in life. While the Democratic Republic of Congo has made progress in education, over 7 million children aged between 5 and 17 still do not have schooling, UNICEF found.
“Break free from the homeless life, my friend. It's time to see what the future holds for you,” Mavakala sang during an excitement-filled performance at the center in August.
28. What do the homeless children do at the cultural center
A. Meet some famous musicians.
B. Express their feelings through songs.
C. Find a suitable job to support themselves.
D. Protect themselves from any possible dangers.
29. What does the underlined word “stimulates” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Encourages. B. Worries. C. Surprises. D. Warns.
30. What is Tshimbalanga’s goal in doing his work
A. To offer children a happy childhood.
B. To prevent poor children sleeping in the street.
C. To prepare the homeless for a better future.
D. To train young people to become future artists.
31. What are the words of Mavakala’s song used to do
A. Remind people to make up for the lost chances.
B. Tell about the difficult life of the homeless.
C. Describe his hope for the wonderful life.
D. Call on those in trouble to change their lives.

What you do after studying could have a big effect on how well you learn and remember. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.
When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after your study may help you remember what you have studied.
The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games.
While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning—what is called “wakeful rest”.
A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember information they learned after doing wakeful rest.
If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is
really that easy!
Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school’s website explains that “a sleep-deprived(睡眠不足的)person cannot focus attention well and therefore cannot learn well”. It also says, “Sleep itself helps us to memorize and that memorizing is very important for learning new information.”
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less.
Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That’s it—a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.
32. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The importance of sleep. B. The good ways to get a rest.
C. The reason for having a rest. D. The types of resting activities.
33. Which activity might be recommended shortly after studying
A. Reading a newspaper. B. Playing a video game.
C. Sitting there doing nothing. D. Having a nice sleep at night.
34. How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF
A. Less than 7 hours. B. Just 7 hours.
C. No more than 9 hours. D. Around 9 hours.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Low-cost Tips on Working
B. Good Things to Do After Your Study
C. Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep
D. How Long Should We Rest After Learning

One day, Emma’s mother brought Emma to her favorite steak house (牛排餐厅). She was excited all the way when she was sitting in her mother’s car. Listening to the wonderful music, she couldn’t help but dance in the back seat. Considering her safety, her mother had to stop her and said, “Hey! My sweety! Please be quiet and fasten your seat belt!”
“Okay! Mom,” she answered while continuing to roll down the car window.
“Emma! Don’t head out of the window! This is very dangerous! No hands either!” Mom raised his voice as she spoke.
She said yes and then quietly sat back in place. But there was no previous happiness. She got off in silence and ordered meals silently. Her mother thought that perhaps her tone had just been too urgent, and she tried to make her happy. “Sweetheart, this is a monthly steak appointment. Can you enjoy it with your mom happily ”
Emma nodded silently but continued to stare out of the window. Ten minutes later, Emma looked at the large plate of steak and potatoes as if she had no intention of eating them. Mom sighed (叹气)and asked, “Isn’t it your favorite steak, sweetheart ” “It is, mom,” Emma said in a low voice. After listening to her answer, Mom brought the steak and planned to help her daughter cut it into small pieces as before.
“No, mom, she quickly reached out for the plate. “I can only eat it once a month, right ” “Yes, we made a promise about this,” said the mother.
“Can I just give it to him ” Emma cautiously asked, and her-eyes filled with expectations. Following the direction of her finger, there was a homeless man in tattered (破烂的) clothes. And she realized that the man was the person that flashed by the roadside when her daughter leaned out of the window in the car.
“Of course, you can,” her mother agreed.

Emma quickly left the table with the full plate of food in hand. As Emma approached the homeless man, her eyes filled with empathy. She greeted him with a warm smile and handed him the plate of food. On receiving the food, the man could hardly conceal his excitement and thanked her joyfully. Meanwhile, Emma sat down beside him, engaging in a heartfelt conservation. Witnessing the moving scene, the mother felt a sense of satisfaction.
As Emma returned, her mother smiled proudly. Moved and delighted, her mother gave her a big hug and praised her for extending a helping hand to the homeless man outside. With another large plate of steak ordered on the table, a surge of happiness and warmth running Emma, she was so relieved that she tasted the steak happily. At that moment, the mother realized that Emma had taught her an invaluable lesson—the joy of giving. While the steak may have been Emma’s favorite, Emma understood the importance of sharing and making a difference in someone else’s life.
