Karen Keech Swerling worked in Hollywood as a costume designer for three decades. She and her husband were looking for a change of pace in retirement, so eight years ago they traded their house in Malibu for an early 1900s Victorian in Richmond's museum district. Swerling turned the basement into a studio for her nonprofit organization, Richmond Really Sews!, and she offered free classes to anyone crazy about sewing.
Swerling said, “People chat while they' re sewing and become friends——I love it. Sewing allows us to express where we come from and how we feel. We can't do that if we go to the store.”
Members of Richmond Really Sews! are people of different backgrounds. Every Saturday afternoon, they gather around 30 work stations with different sewing machines. On Nov. 2nd, they showcased their work at their annual fundraiser, Richmond Frocktails, a fashion show featuring their handmade creations. While Swerling donates her time and talent, she relies on money raised at the event to cover sewing machine maintenance and supplies.
In the spring, the group went to New York City, where they encountered famous fabric designers at Elliott Berman and Metro Textiles, When they returned to Richmond, they received a surprise: a 60-pound box of fabric s from Elliott Berman. “They' re sustainable fabric s from France and Italy and really high-end fabrics,”Swerling said.

Deeply rooted in the oral traditions of indigenous(土著的) communities, indigenous stories carry great significance. Such stories often convey moral lessons, societal norms and the shared wisdom of the community.Through these stories, the younger generations learn about their ancestors, the struggles they faced and the success they achieved. This develops a sense of continuity, strengthening the structure of indigenous societies. Moreover, by listening to and retelling these stories, community members contribute to the survival of indigenous languages.
Indigenous stories serve as windows into the different cultures worldwide. Each story is a unique expression of a community's worldview, shaped by its history, environment and spiritual beliefs. Through these stories, we gain a deeper appreciation for the different ways people view the world. And by telling their stories, indigenous peoples invite others to look into their traditions, developing empathy(共情) and promoting a more interconnected world where different cultures are celebrated and respected.
Many indigenous stories explore themes of creation and the interconnectedness of the spiritual and material fields. Through these tales, individuals find a sense of purpose and connection to something greater than themselves.Indigenous stories provide stories of overcoming challenges, of not giving up in the face of hardship, and of the interconnectedness that combines communities together. In this way, storytelling promotes healing on both individual and communal levels.
While indigenous stories are of great importance, their continuation is threatened. For example, the impact of modernization has disturbed traditional storytelling practices. The use of indigenous stories for commercial purposes also hurts their authenticity(真实性). Fortunately, despite these challenges, there's a growing global recognition of the need to preserve and reinstate indigenous stories.
Language restoration programs play an important role in preserving indigenous stories. They focus on teaching and bringing endangered languages back, which helps oral stories pass down. Cooperative projects between indigenous communities and external partners, such as researchers and storytellers, contribute to the record and preservation of oral traditions. Digital platforms, podcasts, and interactive media provide opportunities to share indigenous stories with a global audience, raising awareness about the importance of indigenous storytelling.

Everything including 3D printers is bigger in Texas. The Lone Star State will soon be the site of the world's first 3D-printed hotel, El Cosmico, which has begun construction in the desert north of Marfa. Photos of the site show a large 46.5-foot-wide and 15.5-foot-tall 3D printer laying sand-colored material onto the foundations, creating sand-colored walls. This machine, called the Vulcan, was created by Texas-based 3D printing and robotics company ICON.
The project is a cooperation between Liz Lambert, El Cosmico's owner, ICON and architects at Bjarke Ingels Group. Lambert wants to expand the existing El Cosmico hotel, adding 43 new units and 18 homes on a new 40-acre land. Model images of the hotel's inside part show cream walls and rounded wooden surfaces full of colors that reflect the surrounding desert. In addition to the hotel, El Cosmico will include several 3D-printed homes, which are now priced for $2.29 million. It's reported that the hotel units will cost between $200 and $450 per night.
The structures’ walls are made of a concrete called“lavacrete”, a particular low-carbon material created by ICON, which has a compressive(压力的) strength of 2,000 to 3,500 pounds per square inch.
ICON was founded in 2018, and its technology has since been used to build 3D-printed homes in Texas and Mexico. Besides printing houses and hotels, a few years ago, ICON built Mars Dune Alpha, a 3D-printed environment that copied conditions on the Red Planet's surface. In 2022, the company got a $57 million contract for their Project Olympus, which is exploring ways to build 3D-printed structures on the moon using locally available materials.
Back on Earth, this 3D-printing technology has the potential to help deal with America's affordable housing problem. In 2020, ICON constructed several houses for the Community First! Village in Austin, a program for people experiencing homelessness.
In the future, the expansion of El Cosmico may include affordable housing for hotel staff. Lambert said these plans were“in the background” but still moving forward. Construction on the new hotel is scheduled to conclude in 2026.
32. What is a feature of the 3D-printed hotel
A. It is eco-friendly as well as strong. B. It is surrounded by wooden houses.
C. It is out of place from the surroundings. D. It's the result of a single company's effort.

The side door of the small aircraft was opened wide, and the wind rushed through the cargo hold(货仓).Packed tightly were fourteen silent people. Two of them were my adult children. Holding themselves perfectly still, they stared out at the endless sky.
When we reached a height of 4,300 feet, my son's face turned pale as he carefully inched next to the opening, leaned(倾斜) sideways, and fell out of the airplane. Something went cold in my heart when I realized he was gone. But, only seconds later, instructions were being barked, and my daughter suddenly appeared in the same space just occupied by my son. She seemed a little nervous and then fell away into the wild blue sky after her brother.
For a quick moment, a desperate fear overcame me, and I wondered if that was the last time I would see them and whether they would land safely. But the thought soon passed as I felt a strong pull on my pack and was moved into position by our instructor.
With a big birthday approaching, two of my adult children had chosen to surprise me with an unforgettable way. I'd wanted to chicken out once we reached the airport, but when I heard a woman celebrating her fiftieth wedding anniversary decided to skydive, I thought that I had the courage to do it, too.
The wind blew louder as we went up further, each second feeling like an eternity(永生). My heart pounded in my chest quickly. Below me, the world seemed so distant, a patchwork of green fields and shining water. As I watched my children disappear into the vastness, a part of me wanted to scream, to pull them back into the safety of the aircraft. But another part, a deeper part, understood the excitement they sought and the freedom they had although they were afraid before skydiving.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
