Whether you’re traveling over your children’s spring break, summer vacation or winter holidays, you’ll find Miami is such a hot spot for families year-round. There are various activities for vacationing kids in Miami, and they can spend one day learning about some of Miami’s rich cultural heritage (遗产),as well as a bit of science and history.
Start your day at Bayside Marketplace. There are plenty of shops and souvenir stands here for all members of the family. Kids will particularly enjoy Art By God, a shop devoted to natural stone, especially fossils(化石).
From Bayside Marketplace walk two blocks north to visit what is perhaps Miami’s most famous historical landmark, Freedom Tower (located at 600 Biscayne Boulevard). It is a great place to expose your kids to the Cuban heritage that is so much a part of life in Miami.
Then you will visit Miami’s Little Havana, and since it’s probably getting close to lunch time, drive yourself to Versailles Restaurant(3555 Southwest 8th Street) in the heart of Little Havana. Then take some time to simply walk the streets and take in the music, the art and the personality of the people and their neighborhood before returning to your car.
On your way back to the hotel, visit the Miami Science Museum, where there are complete science and natural history museums. Or you may visit the Miami Seaquarium (水族馆).Though there are many such theme parks more modern and in better shape than this 1955 pioneer, it’s still worth a visit for their dolphin, sea lion and killer whale shows. A Swedish Professor at Natural History came out to the farm to ask me for help. He had come to Africa to find out at what stage of the embryo (胚胎) state the foot of the monkeys begins to differ from the human foot. For this purpose, he meant to go and shoot Colobus monkeys on Mount Elgon.
“You will never find out from the Colobus monkeys,” I said to him, “they live in the tops of the trees and are shy and difficult to shoot. It would be the greatest luck should you get the embryo you want.”
The Professor was hopeful. He was going to stay out till he had got his foot, he said, even if it was be for years. He had applied to the Game Department for permission to shoot the monkeys he wanted. The permission he was, in view of the high scientific object of his research, certain to get, but so far he had had no reply.
“How many monkeys have you asked to be allowed to shoot ” I asked him
He told me that he had, to begin with, asked for permission to shoot fifteen hundred monkeys.
Now I knew the people at the Game Department, and I assisted him to send in a second letter asking for a reply by return of post, since the Professor was keen to get off on his research. The answer from the Game Department did, for once, come by return of post. The Game Department, they wrote, were pleased to inform Professor Landgreen that, in view of the scientific object of his research, they had seen their way to make an exception from their rules, and to raise the number of monkeys on his license from four to six.
I had to read the letter over twice to the Professor. When the contents at last were clear to him, he became so deadly shocked and hurt, that he did not say a single word. To my expressions of sympathy he made no reply, but walked out of the house, got into his car and drove away sadly.

B.It allowed the Professor to shoot only six monkeys.
C.It was set up to help researchers to find wild animals.
D.It made rules about where to shoot Colobus monkeys.
26.Why did the Professor say nothing after the author read the letter to him
A.The Professor found his research was meaningless.
B.The Professor realized his cruelty in shooting monkeys.
C.The Professor couldn’t carry out his research as expected.
D.The Professor felt sorry for brining trouble to the author.
27.Which of the following is covered in the passage
A.The scarcity of Colobus monkeys. B.The change of the Professor’s mood.
C.The origin of the Game Department. D.The significance of animal protection.
During the summer of 2021, I flew to Greece to learn more about the wildfires there. I wanted to hear people’s stories, to understand what it meant to be displaced by environmental disaster.
In a cafe for people surviving the fire, I met brave children who now have to live with terrible scars, physical and emotional. I met a man who could not even speak to me, his eyes filling with tears.
I was expecting to hear a lot about loss; I was not expecting to learn so much about the attribution (归因) of blame. I came to understand how desperately people needed to blame a tangible entity (实体) –a person, a group of people, the government. Indeed, this was understandable and reasonable. The outbreak and mishandling of the fire needed to be explored, looked into and dealt with.
What surprised me, however, was that the survivors were completely silent over any mention of the climate crisis and global heating. It was made clear to me that this subject was unacceptable. Survivors felt that these issues had nothing to do with what they had suffered, and that the people actually responsible needed to pay.
But when it comes to climate breakdown, blame did not come to just one person, one corporation, one country. In Greece, the fire didn’t rage so hard because someone had set off a spark—— it raged so hard because years of global heating had dried up the land, part of a set of unsustainable (不能持续的) practices and inaction that had set our planet on fire. And now the fires are even worse.
The more I spoke to people, including climate scientists, the more I came to see that there is often a gap that separates science from public awareness. In her book “Engaging With Climate Change” Sally Weintrobe says that “many people who accept global warming continue to regard it as a problem of the future”. To my astonishment, this seemed to apply even to people who had themselves been affected directly by wildfires.
28.What did the author hardly expect to learn in Greece
A.Kids’ scars. B.Economic loss.
C.Survivors’ blame. D.Duration of the fire.
29.What did the survivors think of the fire
A.It was closely related to global heating.
B.They couldn’t accept its massive destruction.
C.The government should be responsible for it.
D.It resulted from someone’s setting fire to the forest.
30.What does Sally Weintrobe say about global warming
A.Much attention has been given to it.
B.People don’t consider it serious now.
C.Scientists are urged to apply efficient way to it.
D.People should make their opinions about it heard.
31.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To inform readers of wildfires in Greece.
B.To encourage readers to donate to survivors.
C.To equip people with surviving skills in wildfires.
D.To raise people’s awareness about the climate crisis.
Weekends are a time to relax and a chance to leave your work behind and have some me time instead. But working from home has tended to blur (模糊) the lines between people’s personal space and workspace and many people are feeling stressed by the middle of the week. That’s why accepting the Swedish tradition of lill rdag or “little Saturday” might be the answer to getting through the week.
This midweek celebration isn’t a vacation day; it’s more like a pause or break after work on Wednesdays to do something like enjoying a meal with your family or just watching an interesting TV show. “You let yourself enjoy something,” said Hanna Hedenius living in Stockholm. “You can see people celebrating on social media. On Instagram, you’ll see a picture of a glass of wine and some cheese, or ice cream, on Wednesday because people have a reason just to do it.”
There’s a national radio show that plays popular music on Wednesdays and there’s a podcast with topics that connect to the celebration of “little Saturday”. While not every Swede practices lill rdag, most do see the pause as a way of getting through the workweek.
Self-care is important for people’s body and mind. Paula Gill Lopez, a professor of Fairfield University in Connecticut, told Everyday Health that the need for self-care is conspicuous. “We have an epidemic of anxiety and depression,” she said. “Everybody feels it.”
Self-care and wellness activities can range from eating healthy foods, to exercising, to taking time to relax. Many people don’t make time to care for themselves and that’s where lill rdag comes in.
“Something like lill rdag can be quite wise in helping people relax,” said Constanze Leineweber, associate professor at the Stress Research Institute of Stockholm University. “You can become encouraged with smaller goals within the week which you can reach and get a reward for.”
So if you’re feeling stressed, have a happy lill rdag!
32.Why may people use lill rdag as a way to get through a week
A.They are under a lot of pressure at work.
B.They want more time to work from home.
C.They are easily affected by Swedish culture.
D.They want chances to share their workspace.
33.What does Hanna Hedenius mainly talk about in Paragraph 2
A.The origin of lill rdag. B.The requirements of lill rdag.
C.The importance of lill rdag. D.The celebrations of lill rdag.
34.What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Amazing. B.Different. C.Obvious. D.Possible.
35.What’s Constanze Leineweber’s attitude towards lill rdag
A.Approving. B.Uncaring. C.Doubtful. D.Dismissive.

With the start of university coming into view, for people who have a child that is getting ready to leave home for the first time, you may be feeling more than a little nervous. 36 Fortunately, there are several steps that you can take to help prepare your child for this important occasion in their lives.
Teach them how to budget. If your child has not yet been taught how to budget their own money, then now is the ideal time for them to learn. It can also be a good idea to try and determine how your child will deal with having their own money at university. 37
Offer them cooking lessons. Your child might already be able to cook a few simple meals that will stop them from surviving on noodles for the foreseeable future. 38 So why not spend the next week or so teaching them a few nutritious meals.
39 If you are worried about your child’s departure, then this is probably nothing compared to how your child is feeling. Not only are they leaving home for the first time, but they will also be starting a new life and having to make new friends. Therefore, just before they leave, it can be really helpful to sit down and talk to them about any concerns or worries they may have.
Get the missing link. 40 What memory or association between the two of you stand out the most Find a present that is symbolic of this. Thus, every time your child sees it, he or she will be reminded of you and the love that you share.
A.Have an open discussion.

The Differences Between the World Cup and the Olympic Soccer
You don’t have to be a soccer expert to know that the World Cup is the sport’s biggest international event. That’s right—it’s even bigger of a deal than participating in the Olympics. While most other sports see the Olympic games as the grandest stage, soccer holds its World Cup to a much higher 41 . You may feel surprised but this is exactly the truth. In fact, the two events are set apart by a fair share of 42
The calendar year
Many of the sports that have their own Olympic events have 43 that revolve around when the Games would be, so when it comes time to compete, the athletes are available. This isn’t the case for some of the bigger sports, 44 , and soccer is one of them. When the World Cup qualifiers(预选赛) 45 with the Olympics, even though there is a FIFA contingent(国际足联团队)that organizes soccer at the Summer Games, FIFA may not encourage its 46 players to compete at the Olympics.
Countries participating
The World Cup hosted 32 national teams in Russia in the 2018 tournament.(This is also what allows the World Cup to host so many games over the span of a month. ) 47 , the Olympics only hosts about half of that, with 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams participating in 2016Summer Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
48 requirement
You can’t put all the 49 on FIFA for players not participating in the Olympics when the Games also put restrictions on who can play at the event. Each team participating in the Olympics can only have three players over 23 on their roster(参赛名单), which has led to the Games being mockingly referred to as a U-23 tournament. The World Cup, 50 , doesn’t have such a limit.
Because of the age limit, many think the level of skill displayed at the Olympics isn’t a good 51 of what the world’s best soccer players are capable of. Keep in mind that FIFA is part of the organizing committee for soccer at the Olympics. So it always has the final 52 in whether the best players in the world can participate. As the New York Times summarized in 2008, FIFA’s message to the Olympics is clear: Soccer is one sport in which you will never be allowed to 53 an event with the best in the world.
Fans
Part of the World Cup’s appeal is that it runs over the course of the 54 , and viewers who don’t watch certain teams on a regular basis can become more familiar with the competition. The Summer Games 55 the games—again, made up of fewer teams—onto a much shorter schedule with less time for fanfare.

Eight o’clock on a May morning, and Mary, my 17-year-old daughter, was in our study upstairs. It had served as her classroom ever since schools moved to remote learning due to the COVID-19.
From the kitchen, I listened to the sound of her tapping on the laptop or her communicating in their Google Meet session s with her friends and teachers. I resisted the desire to check on her. Way too often, I would find Mary texting friends and commenting on their Snapchat and Instagram posts about the fun they were having together. I felt it safer not to care. After all, we’d barely left the house for 10 weeks straight.
“Mom, everyone is hanging out today!” Mary’s voice came from upstairs. “Why can’t I ” I went up the stairs. Mary was lying on the floor, her laptop, school iPad and cell phone in front of her. “It’s unfair,” she said. “I have no one I can be with. I can’t wait until I’m 18. and can do what I want.”
We’d had this conversation before. Still, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. I was sick of isolating (隔离) too. Even though Mary and I were at home together more than we had been in years, we might as well have been living in separate worlds.
“Wanna watch Netflix later ” I asked. “Bake some cookies ” “No, thanks.” Mary shook her head, as if the idea of doing something together was quite beyond her. I was used to Mary’s rejection, but it still hurt. Teenage independence is healthy, but I worried that if I didn’t find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close with her again. She’d be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn’t need me anymore. Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to reach her. That evening, I logged onto Facebook and saw a friend’s family playing with their new kitten together. My mind went back to the difficult period when I was in high school and our family moved to the new city. It was a gray tabby (虎斑猫) with which Mom surprised me that brightened my days and got me through that difficult, lonely time.

【原文】 By the end of the term I hope you’ll be convinced that formal writing always requires revision. Sometimes it requires a fairly major rewriting of the paper. Some students may have the mistaken idea that revision means simply making corrections in spelling and grammar. I call that proof-reading. What I expect you to do as you revise is to value and improve the overall effectiveness of your paper.
But how can you tell if your paper is effective Well, for example, start by asking yourself these questions: Is the topic restricted enough to be fully discussed within the given links Are the main ideas clear Are they supported by the specific details in the examples Do they move smoothly from one idea to the next
You’ll need enough time for a possible major repair, that is, you may have to make a lot of changes before your paper becomes really clear to the reader. So I’ll expect a draft of each paper two weeks before the final due date. That way I can criticize it and get it back in time for you to revise it. Then you can turn in a final draft for grading. This process may seem like a great deal of trouble at first but I think you will find it valuable. In fact, after you finish this course I doubt that you will ever turn in a term paper without first revising it carefully.
Questions :
1. What should the students’ aim be when they revise their work
2. When should the first draft be turned in
3. What is the purpose of the talk
13.C 14.A 15.C 16.B
【原文】M: Where should we eat
W: I’d like some Chinese food.
M: Hmm… I don’t know about that. Last time we went to a Chinese restaurant, and the food was very spicy. I got a stomachache afterward.
W: Oh, not all Chinese food is spicy. Most of it is just tasty… not hot at all! I’ll take you to a different place this time. They make good soup at this restaurant.
M: Maybe… I kind of want some real British food, though. Maybe fish and chips. Let’s go to a restaurant that serves local food.
W: Why would you want British food It’s all tasteless to me.
M: You’re wrong. Traditional British food can be very good. There was a time when British food was very boring. I don’t know why. But now, people are trying to cook good food like they used to in this country. Many restaurants in London are cooking in the new style now, which is really the old style!
W: OK, we’ll go and get some British food this time. But next time I want to take you to that soup place.
M: Deal!

【原文】W: Excuse me. I'm doing research on bus service. Could I get you to answer a few questions It won't take long. M: OK. I’d like to help. W: Thanks. How often do you take a bus, every day, less than once a week or somewhere in between M: I go to school by bus. So it's usually twice daily, Line Four. W: I see. Could you rate its service If 1 is poor, 2 is fair, and 3 is good, which number would you choose M: I would say 2. The drivers are nice. The buses are clean and the seats are comfortable, but it's sometimes unreliable. There should be a bus every ten minutes. But yesterday morning I waited almost twenty minutes before the bus came and was almost late for school. W: Oh, that's too bad. Do you have some suggestions for the bus company M: Try to have the buses arrive on time, of course, and um, there can be a map on the bus. You know some passengers can not use the guidebook very well. W: Thank you very much for your help. M: You are welcome.

这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了一位自然历史的瑞典教授来到农场向作者寻求帮助提供疣猴,但是让教授失望的是,他最终被许可射杀的疣猴数量远远少于教授所期待的。
24.推理判断题。根据第二段“You will never find out from the Colobus monkeys,” I said to him, “they live in the tops of the trees and are shy and difficult to shoot. It would be the greatest luck should you get the embryo you want.””(你永远也不会从疣猴身上找到答案,”我对他说,“它们住在树顶,很害羞,很难射杀。如果你能得到你想要的胚胎,那将是最大的幸运。”)故可推知,通过“如果你能得到你想要的胚胎,这将是最大的幸运”,作者暗示弄到疣猴可不是件容易的事。故选A项。
25.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“The Game Department, they wrote, were pleased to inform Professor Landgreen that, in view of the scientific object of his research, they had seen their way to make an exception from their rules, and to raise the number of monkeys on his license from four to six.”(他们写道,游戏部门很高兴地通知兰德格林教授,鉴于他的研究对象是科学,他们已经设法破例,将他许可证上的猴子数量从4只增加到6只。)可知,从文章中我们可以了解到游戏部门只允许教授射杀六只猴子。故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中最后一句提到的游戏部门只允许教授射杀六只猴子。以及最后一段中“I had to read the letter over twice to the Professor. When the contents at last were clear to him, he became so deadly shocked and hurt, that he did not say a single word.”(我不得不把信读给教授听两遍。当他终于明白了事情的原委后,他感到非常震惊和痛苦,一句话也没说。)故可推知,作者把信读给教授听后,他什么也没说是因为他不能像预期的那样进行他的研究。故选C项。
27.细节理解题。根据第三段中“The Professor was hopeful.”(教授满怀希望。)以及最后一段中“When the contents at last were clear to him, he became so deadly shocked and hurt, that he did not say a single word. 29.细节理解题。第三段第二句提到“I came to understand how desperately people needed to blame a tangible entity (实体) –a person, a group of people, the government. ”(我逐渐明白人们迫切需要将责任归咎于有形实体——个人、群体或政府机构等等,这也是可以理解且合理的行为。)作者在听到了当地人对于希腊大火的陈述后,发现当地人最想要政府来为这一场大火负责,并且进行调查。故选C。

31.推理判断题。第一段提到“During the summer of 2021, I flew to Greece to learn more about the wildfires there. I wanted to hear people’s stories, to understand what it meant to be displaced by environmental disaster.”(2021年夏天,我飞往希腊,更多地了解那里的野火。我想听听人们的故事,了解因环境灾难而流离失所意味着什么。)但是在作者访问的过程中,当地人们并没有考虑到全球气候变暖也是导致这一大火的隐形原因,反而想要政府或者机构对这件事情负责。最后一段提到“To my astonishment, this seemed to apply even to people who had themselves been affected directly by wildfires.”(令我惊讶的是,这似乎甚至适用于那些自己直接受到野火影响的人。)作者发现经历过火灾的人,也几乎忽视了全球气候变暖在这场大火中造成的后果。因此作者想要引起人们对于气候危机的意识。故选D。

67.It suddenly occurred to me that having a cat in our house might help. “You want to get a kitten ” I asked Mary. “Oh, Yes!” she relied eagerly. “I want an orange tabby. A male!” The next morning, I called shelters, but no one had any kittens, let alone a male orange tabby. I was about to give up when one shelter responded telling me that an 8-week kitten who lost his mom was seeking help and they also sent a photo. Showing the photo to Mary, I was pleased to see her eyes round, sparkling with excitement. “This is exactly my dream kitten. Do get it for me, please, mom.” Mary begged in a thrilled tone, holding my arm with wild joy. It was so long since we got that close to interact that I was almost moved to tears.
We immediately decided to take the cat from the shelter home. Having made preparations together, we waited eagerly for the new member to arrive. Then came Ron, named by my daughter, a really active fellow who often brought laughter to us everywhere he popped up. Mary worked with me to look after him, train him and enjoy her time with Ron. To my great joy, I could hear more laughter from Mary, who shared loads of warm scenes of the whole family having fun together in her Instagram posts instead of locking herself in the study all day long. In a sense, the invisible wall between us seemed to have been broken down. Sometimes, there is no need to seek magic for a change, and a bond that clicks alive can work miracles .
