Edward O. Wilson, known as “ant man”, was born on June 10, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was moved frequently throughout his childhood. Wilson grew up exploring the forests and wildlife. One of these adventures left him partly blind, but they also set off his lifelong fascination (着迷) with ants and their social structures.
Wilson earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama. In 1955, he received his Ph. D. from Harvard and worked there until retirement.
Wilson’s early study of ants led to his first major discovery in 1959: how ants communicate through the release of chemical signals.
Later, in 1990, Wilson and German biologist Bert Holldobler published their Pulitzer-winning The Ants. It detailed the insects’ social structure that was both valued by scholars and accessible to general readers.
Another of Wilson’s major works started in the early 1960s when he teamed up with Robert MacArthur. The pair published The Theory of Island Bio-geography, where they sought to explain why different places have different numbers of species.
What many consider to be Wilson’s most important contributions to evolutionary biology came in 1975 when he published Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. The work explored the genetic roots of animal behavior and argued that genes shaped human behavior.
Wilson faced accusations (谴责) for these ideas but his work finally largely proved true. In 1978, his ideas on the role biology plays in human culture peaked in On Human Nature, which won him a Pulitzer in 1979.
Wilson published more than 400 scientific papers and 20 books. These accomplishments offered him a type of superstar status, but friends and colleagues say the polite Southerner remained down to earth. “Professor Wilson really listened and engaged with whomever he was interacting with,” said Corrie S. Moreau, who was one of Wilson’s final advisees.
4. What contributed to Wilson’s passion for ants
A. His accidental disability. B. His boyhood time spent in nature.
C. The school education he received. D. The discovery he made about ants.
5. What is Wilson’s first Pulitzer-winning book about
A. The social structure of ants. B. The distribution of different species.
C. The role of chemical signals in communication. D. The links between biology and human culture.
6. According to the last paragraph, which word best describes Wilson
A. Modest. B. Confident. C. Well-meaning. D. Independent.
7. What is the best title of this text
A. Discoveries in Evolutionary Biology. B. A Leading Figure in Popular Science.
C. The Pioneering “Ant Man”. D. The Adventure of a Pulitzer Prize Winner.

Adolescence is a period of significant change and growth, often marked by a variety of challenges and concerns that are unique to this stage of life. One of the most common issues faced by teenagers is the pressure to perform well academically. The expectations from parents, teachers, and society at large can weigh heavily on young shoulders, leading to stress and anxiety. Peer pressure is another significant source of stress, as teenagers often feel the need to conform to the expectations of their social group, which can sometimes lead them into risky behaviors or poor decisions.
The rapid physical changes that occur during adolescence can also be a source of discomfort and self-consciousness. Teenagers may struggle with their changing bodies and appearances, which can affect their self-esteem and confidence. Mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, are increasingly common among adolescents, and often become worse by the hormonal changes that accompany adolescence.
Furthermore, the arrival of technology and social media has introduced new challenges for teenagers. The excessive use of smartphones and social media platforms can lead to addiction and poor time management. The constant comparison with others and the fear of missing out can result in low self-esteem and a decrease in overall well-being.
In conclusion, adolescence is a time of both growing pains and gains. While teenagers face numerous challenges, they also learn resilience (韧性), independence, and the value of personal growth. It is of great significance for parents, educators, and society to provide support and understanding to help teenagers navigate this complex period of their lives.

C. Achieving the teachers’ goals. D. Facing the parents’ expectations.
9. Which of the following is a result of peer pressure

C. Enhanced academic performance. D. Engagement in risky behaviors.
10. What can be inferred about the impact of social media on teenagers
A. It encourages community involvement.
B. It improves academic performance.
C. It can lead to addiction and low self-esteem.
D. It promotes physical health.
11. What is the author’s view on the challenges faced by teenagers
A. They are unable to get over.
B. They are a necessary part of growing up.
C. They are only faced by a few teenagers.
D. They are entirely negative.

Animal populations across the world have been reduced by 69% in less than 50 years, according to a new scientific report. The report’s authors are calling for urgent action to restore the natural world.
The Living Planet Report (LPR) is produced every two years by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Zoological Society of London. The most recent report, released on October 13, 2022, shows that almost 70% of the world’s monitored wildlife was lost between 1970 and 2018. The report is based on research from 195 countries around the world. Data was collected from almost 32,000 populations of 5,230 species.
Although the average global loss of wildlife is 69%, the rate is greater in the global south. Latin America and the Caribbean in particular have seen the sharpest fall, having lost 94% of their wildlife since 1970. Across the world, the biggest drop was in freshwater populations of wildlife — including almost 1,400 species of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles — which have decreased by 83%.
The report identifies several causes for wildlife loss, including hunting, farming, the loss of forests, pollution and climate change. However, the report also promotes solutions, such as designing less destructive food production systems, urgently protecting the Amazon rainforest, limiting the use of fossil fuels, and creating new laws to protect our natural environment.
Commenting on the report, Marco Lambertini, director general of WWF International, called the figures “terrifying”, and said “we need to help nature recover and not simply halt its loss.” In December 2022, world leaders are meeting in Montreal for the 15th UN Biodiversity Conference, also known as COP 15. The authors of the LPR say that this is an opportunity for a global plan to deal with wildlife loss and restore nature. “Government leaders must step up at COP 15,” said Lambertini. “The world is watching.”
12. What does the author mainly want to show by listing the numbers in the first three paragraphs
A. The seriousness of wildlife loss worldwide. B. The causes of the urgent situation.
C. The detailed process of the research. D. The drop in freshwater populations of wildlife.
13. According to the report, what is a possible solution to population decline of wildlife
A. Stop hunting and farming. B. Not permit the production of wildlife food.
C. Offer legal protection of natural environment. D. Replace the fossil fuels with renewable energy.
14. What does the underlined word “halt” mean in the last paragraph
A. Accept. B. Fear. C. Suffer. D. Stop.
15. What is Lambertini’s attitude towards wildlife loss
A. Indifferent. B. Concerned. C. Positive. D. Satisfied.

Catherine had stayed at home all her life to look after her three children, but now, she, who lost her husband in a car accident, had to step out and earn money to make ends meet. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero.
One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site (工地). “I think I can work here,” she thought and walked close to the manager.
“Hi, are you hiring (雇佣) ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe.“Are you sure you can work here This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract (合同) to work a 12-hour shift (轮班). However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site.
Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks (砖块) on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming competition in school that required mothers to join. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why ” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom, I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at them,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly. A few weeks later, Peter was walking home when something unexpected caught his attention. In the distance, he saw a familiar figure in worn-out clothes, covered in dust and sweat, lifted heavy bricks with her weathered hands at the construction site. As he drew closer, he realized it was his mother, Catherine. Catherine tirelessly moved heavy bricks with her ugly and rough hands under the scorching sun. Her face was covered in sweat, and she didn't even have time to wipe it off as she rushed back and forth, working tirelessly. Peter stood there in shock, unable to utter a single word. Meanwhile, a wave of guilt and regret flooded over him. He shouldn’t have said those hurtful words.
On his way back home, he kept thinking about how he would apologize to his mother. Peter couldn't shake off the guilt and regret for his hurtful words towards his mother. He knew he had to make things right and apologize to her. The moment Catherine stepped into the house from work, Peter rushed up to her, gently took her hands in his and held them tightly. “Mom, I’m sorry” he murmured, tears welling up in his eyes, “I didn’t understand then, but now I see how hard you work for us. Your hands may be rough, but they are the most beautiful hands in the world because they care for us.” Tears welled up in Catherine’s eyes as she embraced her son, a wave of happiness washing over her. From that day on, Peter not only attended the school event with his mother but also stood by her side, holding her hands with pride.
