A voice reaches us, crying out from the depths of a silence: "I am alive, I can think, and no one has the right to deny me these two realities…"
The words were conveyed by a flicker(跳动)of the left eyelid. It came frons a book, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, by a former journalist, Jean-Dominique Bauby. He worked for journals like the Quotidien de Paris and Paris Match. For four years until December 1995 he was the very successful chief editor of Elle.
Then the unthinkable happened. A cardiovascular(心血管的)accident sent him into a deep coma(昏迷). His brain remained undamaged, but its connection to his body left him with only the ability to blink his left eyelid. The poor man was found to be suffering from the rare disease "Locked-in Syndrome". unable to breathe or eat without assistance.
In this body, however, his brain was working wildly, trying to make people understand what he was thinking. With the help of a specialized nurse, Claude Mendibil, he was able to write his book, using only his ability to blink at the most frequently used letters.
He would spend most of the night editing his thoughts and composing sentences. It took him about 200,000 blinks to write his book of more than 100 pages. In it, Bauby describes his paralyzed(瘫痪的)existence as being trapped in an old-fashioned deep-sea diving bell while the "butterflies" of his mind fly freely.
One would expect from this process formal factual report, but that is not the case. The book reads in flowing images that light up his dilemma. The style is clear and fresh, and not without elegance, imagination and humor.
He is also in search of past time, of memory itself, of the books he had read, the poems he had learnt by heart. Even sadder, he thinks of all the books he wanted to read and hadn't gotten to. He has to listen to someone else reading them to him. He recalls meals, a horse race, his life and work as an editor, and his struggle in his hospital bed to twitch(抽动)his nose when a fly lands on it.
"From this hell comes a great message of life and hope," said Antoine Audouard. a friend of Bauby's and the book's publisher.
24. We can learn from the article that Jean Dominique Bauby__________.

Researchers found that they could accurately predict how close two people were based only on their brain activity in response to a series of unfamiliar video clips. Simply put: You and your best friends really do think alike. According to a Dartmouth study finding, friends have similar neural(神经的)responses to real-world stimuli(刺激)and these similarities can be used to predict who your friends are. The study reveals that friends have the most similar neural activity patterns, followed by friends-of-friends who, in turn, have more similar neural activity than people three degrees removed(friends-of-friends-of-friends).
Published in Nature Communications, the study is the first of its kind to examine the connections between the neural reaction of people within a real-world social network, "Neural responses to dynamic, naturalistic stimuli, like videos, can give us a window into people's unlimited, unplanned thought processes as they unfold. Our results suggest that friends process the world around them in exceptionally similar ways," says lead author Carolyn Parkinson.
The study analyzed the friendships or social ties within a group of 280 graduate students. The researchers estimated the social distance between pairs of individuals based on mutually(相互地)reported social ties. Forty-two of the students were asked to watch a range of videos while their neural activity was recorded in a functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI)scanner. The videos covered a range of topics and genres, including politics, science, comedy and music videos, for which a range of responses was expected. Each participant watched the same videos in the same order, with the same instructions. The researchers then compared the neural responses pairwise across the set of students to determine if pairs of students who were friends had more similar brain activity than pairs further removed from each other in their social network.
The findings revealed that neural response similarity was strongest among friends, and this pattern appeared across brain regions involved in emotional responding and high-level reasoning. Even when the researchers controlled variables, including left-handedness or right-handedness, age, gender, race, and nationality, the similarity in neural activity among friends was still evident. The team also found that fMRI response similarities could be used to predict not only if a pair were friends but also the social distance between the two.
28. How did the researchers judge the relationship between two people
A. By asking them to complete a questionnaire.
B. By observing their interactions on formal occasions.
C. By analyzing their brains' reaction to videos.
D. By comparing their assessment of the same visual material.
29. What can we know about the study mentioned in the text
A. It has yet to win recognition from the academic world.
B. It involved more than 200 students watching various videos.
C. It proved people could make new friends easily by watching videos.
D. It is original and checks people's neural responses.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The conclusion of the study. B. The process of the study.
C. The working principle of an fMRI. D. The challenges of the researchers.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. A Study Revealing Social Ties Through Neural Responses
B. Neural Activity Patterns in Response to Videos
C. Predicting Social Ties Based on the Similarities of Nerves
D. A Study on the Connections Between Friends

Pushed by the rapid pace of today's fashion industry, it's no wonder many clothes buyers find themselves with a "closet(衣橱)of regrets". All the clothes that don't get worn can bang heavy on a consumer's mind until finally thrown away. The trouble is, "There's no ‘away' for your clothes," says Maxine Bédat, author of a 2021 book, Unraveled: The Life and Death of a Garment, and an activist trying to change the industry's wasteful ways.
A few statistics tell the story. Fashion is responsible for about 10% of the carbon emissions(排放物)that are tipping our planet toward climate disaster. It produces 20% of all industrial water pollution. And it creates unimaginable quantities of rubbish, with about a garbage truck of clothes burnt or buried in a landfill every second.
Although some companies have voluntarily tried to minimize their environmental and social impact, little progress has been made. So, a bill known as the New York Fashion Act was introduced. It would help consumers better understand the impact of their purchases and require every large multinational fashion name operating in the state to map their global supply chains, reveal their environmental and social impacts, and set targets to cut emissions. Failure to meet the targets could bring a 2% fine on annual turnover.
However, the bill is pro-business, argues Ms. Bédat, who worked with the bill's co-sponsors(共同发起人)to craft the measure, because it would level the playing field for companies to operate at the same environmental standards.
Ms. Bédat is looking beyond the "more" of fashion to how people value their clothes. Her book closes with a vision of a future when "we will love our clothes because we have seized control of our own attention and removed the noise in our inboxes and on our social media channels that had taken our attention from our true needs and desires. And we bought them not to fill other holes in our lives, but from an aware and informed mindset." That could be just enough to clear out anyone's "closet of regrets."
32. What does the underlined word "story" in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Regrets left by over-consumption.
B. Worries generated by abandoning clothes.
C. Anxiety produced by falling behind the trend.
D. Problems caused by the fast-paced fashion industry,
33. What does the New York Fashion Act aim to achieve
A. Boost sales for fashion companies.
B. Control global fashion supply chains.
C. Raise environmental awareness of buyers and producers.
D. Limit the expansion of the fashion companies in New York.
34. What does Bédat think of the bill to the fashion companies
A. Fair. B. Costly. C. Complex. D. Demanding.
35. How can the "closet of regrets" be reduced according to Bédat
A. Follow trends and buy more clothes. B. Value needs and make wise purchases.
C. Plan budgets and shop eco-consciously. D. Stress beauty and cut down on buying.

The Power of "Like"
Like it or love it, social media is a major part of life. Teens spend more than half of their waking hours online. And most of what they do is read and respond to posts by friends and family. Clicking on a thumbs-up is an easy way to stay in touch. 36
Clicking "like" on a post can increase the number of people who see it. if other people have liked a post, new viewers will be more likely to like it too. 37 As a result, that popularity can feed on itself.
What's more, viewing one's own posts with a lot of likes activates the reward system in their brains. Positive responses to teens' own photos(in the form of many "likes")tell them that their friends appreciate the material they're posting. 38 Seeing someone else's popular photo, however, doesn't necessarily turn it on.
39 In one 2011 study, teens doing driving task in a lab took more risks when their friends were around, which suggested that teens were changing their behavior to try to get social approval. And they make similar changes when using social media according to a research conducted last year. The research showed that popular photos might signal to teens that what's in those photos is socially acceptable. For example, images related to alcohol may encourage teens to drink. That means that what you like online has the power to influence not just what others like, but even what they do.
Joining social media can give people a sense of being in the know. However, posts may exaggerate(夸张)how well our friends and others are feeling, making them appear much happier than we are. 40
A. It can also lower the viewer's self-control.
B. Teens use it to learn how to handle their social world.
C. Many social media sites share more of the higher-ranked posts.
D. It's no surprise that responses from peers affect how teens behave.
E. Their brains respond to those "likes" by turning on the reward center.
F. And that can, inappropriately, make us feel less successful than them.
G. But those "likes" can have power that goes beyond a simple connection.
