In one apartment in Jos, Nigeria, Wuni Bitrus and a dozen students gathered around a table covered with a toolbox, a 12-volt adapter (适配器), and a mix of colored wires. The students’ idea was to build a “smart” door that opens with the touch of a finger.
The students chatted in sign language, and Mr. Bitrus signed back. The group discusses using Arduino, an open-source electronics platform, and one student wondered how fingerprints could be stored. Mindful of Nigeria's electricity problems, Mr. Bitrus advised the group to use a battery- powered keypad lock system first and include a fingerprint feature later. After nodding in agreement, the students excitedly started working.
This is one typical scene in a club run by the Deaf Technology Foundation (DTF), a nonprofit co-founded by Mr. Bitrus. It coaches deaf Nigerian children and young adults in computer programming and robotics which are believed to maintain a rising trend in today’s labor market. The students also work to improve their reading skills and receive career guidance.
Mr. Bitrus’ desire to change Nigeria's deaf communities was awakened in 2014. While teaching, he noticed a 13-year-old girl was treated unfairly and he became determined to learn sign language. Three years later, he got funded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and established DTF.
One of the darkest memories that Mercy Samson Grimah, a student of the foundation, has about growing up is looking at the faces of people around her. Ms. Grimah says her private secondary school did not formally teach sign language to her, nor much of anything else. But fortunately, she formed a bond with the Deaf Technology Foundation. “I had never touched a laptop before in my life,” she says. Now, she wants to become a computer scientist.
So far, DTF has been struggling to keep the dreams of these students alive, as it can only afford two paid instructors and it is difficult to keep up with the growing number of students. DTF intends to take advantage of Nigeria's rapid tech development, joining hands with companies on self-driving car technology and automated wheelchairs to secure its existence.
24. What happened in one apartment in Jos
A. A classroom lecture on electronics.
B. A debate about door security issues.
C. A discussion on fingerprint technology.
D. A scene of deaf students doing research.
25. What is the primary goal of DTF
A. To bridge the mental gap for deaf youth.
B. To build smart devices for deaf students.
C. To create a social platform for deaf students.
D. To provide technological aid for deaf students.
26. What aspect of DTF does paragraph 4 focus on
A. Its influence. B. Its objective. C. Its challenges. D. Its origins.
27. What difficulty is DTF experiencing
A. Inaccessible learning materials. B. Shortage of skilled instructors.
C. Insufficient financial supports. D. Failure to attract more students.

Cleaning your hands with soap and water washes away bacteria. But the hot-air hand dryers found in many public restrooms seem to blow microbes (微生物) right back onto clean skin. That's what 16-year-old Zita Nguyen found by swabbing (用拭子擦拭) people’s freshly washed and dried hands.
Water going through toilets in public restrooms results in the bacteria from human. wastes entering the air. That same air is drawn into those wall-mounted electric hand dryers. These machines provide a nice warm home in which microbes can grow well, and cleaning the inside of these machines can be difficult, Zita says. “Freshly washed hands are getting dirtied with the bacteria that grow inside these machines.” she adds.
The idea for her project came from the pandemic (流行病). People stayed at least one meter away from each other to limit the spread of the pandemic. Zita wanted to explore that idea with hand dryers. Would drying hands farther away from the hot-air dryer lessen the number of bacteria that fall back onto the skin
The teen bad four people wash and dry their hands in the restrooms. The participants washed with soap and water. After each washing, they dried their hands using one of three different methods. In some trials, they simply used paper towels. In the others, they used an electric hand dryer. Sometimes, they held their hands close to the machine, about 13 centimeters below it. At other times, they held their hands about 30 centimeters below the dryer. Each hand-drying condition was performed 20 times. Right after this drying, Zita swabbed their hands for bacteria. Then she placed these swabs on Petri dishes for three days in suitable growing conditions.
Afterward, all the Petri dishes were covered with bacteria. Fewer than 50 bacterial colonies (菌落), on average, turned up in each dish exposed to swabs from hands dried with paper towels or from hands held farther from the electric dryers. In contrast, more than 130 colonies, on average, grew in Petri dishes from hands held close to the hot-air dryers.
Zita was amazed by all the microbes in these dishes and realized they represented what covered people’s hands after using a hot-air dryer.
28. What did Zita Nguyen discover in her research
A. Public restrooms are full of bacteria in the air.
B. Swabbing freshly washed hands is unnecessary.
C. Hand dryers can infect clean hands with bacteria.
D. Cleaning the inside of hot air hand dryers is hard.
29. What was the inspiration for Zita’s project
A. Her concern over the damage of bacteria to skins.
B. Safety distance for people during the pandemic.
C. Her curiosity about the structure of hand dryers.
D. The medicine of limiting the spread of the pandemic.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The process of conducting the experiment.
B. The reason for hand-dryers having bacteria.
C. The desire for better drying hands machines.
D. The result of drying hands with paper towels.
31. The number of bacterial colonies in the dishes is related to _________.
A. the application of hand dryers
B. the lasting time of swabbing hands
C. the growing conditions for bacteria
D. the functions of hot air hand dryers
D
The metaverse, a virtual universe that combines augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the Internet, is rapidly transforming various industries, including the travel industry. The metaverse’s ability to create immersive and interactive environments allows users to explore new destinations and cultures without leaving the comfort of their homes. This technological innovation has the potential to change the travel industry, providing opportunities for growth and sustainability in an increasingly digital world.
With the help of VR headsets and other devices, users can explore distant destinations and experience unique cultural events from their living rooms. This allows individuals who have physical disability to travel the world to engage with different cultures and environments. Moreover, virtual tourism can help address issues of overtourism, as it enables users to visit popular sites without contributing to overcrowding or environmental destruction.
Virtual tourism is able to provide immersive experiences. By using advanced technology, virtual reality developers can create realistic simulations (模拟) of various destinations, complete with sights, sounds, and even smells. These simulations can be tailored to individual preferences, allowing users to explore at their own pace and focus on the aspects of a destination that interest them most. What's more, virtual tourism can improve educational experiences, enabling users to learn about a location in an engaging and interactive manner.
In addition to virtual tourism, the metaverse offers other opportunities for the travel industry. For instance, AR technology can provide real-time information and interactive content. Imagine walking through the streets of Rome and having your smartphone or AR glasses overlay historical facts, accommodation recommendations, and navigation (导航) assistance directly onto your field of view. This combination of digital and physical experiences can enrich travelers’ understanding of their surroundings and create more memorable journeys.
However, the rise of virtual tourism also presents challenges for the travel industry. Traditional businesses must adapt to the changing landscape by embracing (欣然接受) digital technologies .and developing new strategies to remain competitive. Additionally, concerns about data privacy and security must be addressed to ensure that users feel safe engaging with virtual experiences.
32. How does the metaverse transform the travel industry

I liked things going according to my plans. But lately there had been lots of troubles in my life. My daughter Gabby had a disease, making it difficult for me to focus on my job. One day, I went for a walk on the beach. It was something I’d been too busy to do before. As I slowly walked, looking at the blue sky and sea, my mood gradually lightened.
On my way home, I came across an art supply store. Attracted by the beautiful decorations, I walked inside. I hadn’t painted since I was a child, and I had already forgotten what most of the tools were for. Therefore, I decided to leave after a while. Just then, a young man approached and asked whether I needed any help. I wanted to say no and get out of the store. But soon I changed my mind and replied, “I would like to paint, but I don’t know what to buy.”
“My dad is an artist. I can show you everything you need,” the young man offered. He carefully picked out a set of paints and recommended brushes and other necessary things. “Have fun!” he added before I left. “I expect you to show me a painting the next time you come in here.”
I smiled weakly. Not likely, I thought. Yet that night, after Gabby went to sleep, I set up the easel (画架) and the tools in the dining room and decided to give it a try. What should I paint I closed my eyes. Suddenly, I could imagine the blueness of the sky connected with the deeper, darker shades (色调) of the sea. I took a deep breath and began to draw.
I kept painting for the next few weeks. Whenever I felt stressed, I painted, and then I could forget all my troubles. I used my phone to take pictures of my paintings, so I could carry that feeling of peace with me. One afternoon, when I ran out of canvases (画布), I returned to the store to get some more.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The young man who had helped me before recognized me. As my interest in painting grew, my daughter began to ask if she could join me.

Possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The young man who had helped me before recognized me. “You're back!” he greeted me warmly and asked about my painting progress. I hesitantly showed him some photos of my work on my phone. He admired them carefully and said, “These drawings are amazing! You've really captured something special.” Encouraged by his words, I shared how painting had become my comfort during difficult times. He listened patiently, offering tips on new techniques and materials I could try. As I left the store with fresh supplies, I felt a sense of relaxation and confidence.
Paragraph 2:
As my interest in painting grew, my daughter began to ask if she could join me. Her eager request filled me with joy and hope. I gladly agreed and set up a small easel for her beside mine. Painting together became our special family time, full of creativity and laughter. As we mixed colors and created images, I cheerfully noticed a positive change in Gabby’s mood. She seemed more energetic, even on days when her treatments were tough. I gradually realized that although life hadn't gone according to my original plans, it had also brought some pleasant surprises.

M: I need to update the software on my computer, so I can’t work on my paper the whole day.
W: Well, let’s spend the afternoon watching the BBC’s latest natural history documentary series Dynasties II and then we can take a ride along the park.
M: That is a good plan.
Text 2建议带孩子进行户外活动
M: Jennifer, why don’t you ask your kids to play outdoors
W: I’m afraid they will get hurt if they are not careful.
M: But I think parents should allow their children to take risks, challenge themselves, and gain new skills.
Text 3丢失重要法律文件
W: I can’t find the important legal document! I left it on my desk, then we went to the meeting, but now it is gone.
M: Oh no! Maybe some colleague took it and kept it safe until you came back. Have you asked anyone else
Text 4保持健康的方法
W: Tom, you already know there are many great reasons to exercise- from improving energy, sleep, and health to reducing anxiety and depression. So how do you stay fit
M: I usually do jogging in the morning. And in the evening I like lifting weight at the gym. What about you
W: Jogging is boring and weight-lifing is too demanding, so I usually cycle with my friends.
Text 5理解他人
W: Hello, Jason. This is Susan. Sorry for returning my call so long.
M: Hi, Susan. You finally called.
W: I should have called sooner, but I’ll be burning the candle at both ends this month.
M: I see. You must have been busy getting things set up in your new home.
Text 6参加诗歌活动
W: David, I heard you’re going to participate in a poetry event in China.
M: You can say that. Altogether, more than 71 poets from BRICS countries will go to it.
W: What will participants do during the event
M: We will express thoughts through poetry and engage in a series of literary activities. ⑥But what I look forward to most is to gain insight into different cultures. I’m excited to meet other poets.
W: So when will you go to it
M:⑦I plan to leave for China on July 18th.
W:⑦There are just five days left. Have you already booked a flight ticket
M:⑦Yes. I did that three days ago.
Text 7工作面试
M: Good morning, Ms.Wilson. You are applying for the position of advertising designer. Could you tell me about your previous job experience
W: Well, I’ve been working at a company for the last three years and I’m familiar with the latest art and design trends.
M: Excellent. But the advertising industry is a competitive field. ⑧Besides good communication skills and rich experience, a high degree is a decisive requirement.
W: Well, I have got my master’s degree.
M: That is pretty impressive. Do you mind telling me why you want to leave your current job
W:⑨I ended up doing a lot of overtime work and I got so exhausted that I couldn’t find time for myself anymore. This position allows for flexible working hours, so I can balance my work and study.
M: I’m glad you’re interested in our company. ⑩We should know by next Tuesday whom to hire. If your application is successful, we will notify you by email.
W: Thank you for making the time to interview me for the open role. I am excited at the prospect of working in this position and being part of a reputable team.
Text 8营养食品标签
M: I’ve still got loads to do for our report on nutritional food labels.
W: Me too. Professor Smith's assignment is really not easy, is it
M: No, it’s not. It requires a commitment of time and energy.
W: Anyway, have you learned something from it
M: Yes. Before doing the project, I only checked labels to make sure there were no peanuts because of my allergy. Now I'm starting to pay more attention to other information, for I want to know how healthy a product is.
W: That’s good. You know by reading those food labels more carefully, I begin to realize that the “healthy” yogurt I've bought for years is actually full of sugar, which means it’s not “healthy” at all.
M: That’s definitely not a good thing since you always try to stay on a diet.
W: Right. I think having nutritional food labeling is really a good idea. It can prevent customers from buying the wrong things.
M: Well, that might not be the case, I’m afraid. From the data I've gathered so far, somehow
people don’t necessarily stop buying unhealthy products even if they see the labels.
Text 9在菜园种植蔬菜
W: Bob, every time I look out of my window, I can see there are many vegetables in your
garden. Do you grow them to sell
M: No. Growing vegetables helps me stay active and it has become an important part of
my life.
W: I haven’t grown anything in my garden yet. What vegetables do you suggest I grow
M: You can try broccoli. It’s a cool-weather plant that grows best in spring and fall. They can be harvested in sixty to ninety days. If you grow them now, they can be harvested in fall.
W: OK. What else can I grow
M: You can also grow peppers. But you should watch out for two common insect pests that target peppers.
W: Can I grow peppers now
M: Sure. So is there anything else you want to grow
W: Yes. I also want to grow beets.
M: This is a good vegetable to grow. You can harvest the beet roots, but you can also harvest and eat the greens. The roots are best when they are harvested small---between one and two inches across.
W: Well, there are so many vegetables I want to grow, but I don't know where to begin.
M: You can come to my garden tomorrow. I'll tell you more.
W: Thank you. I'm lucky to live in a neighborhood with you.

M: Good evening, everyone. I’m your old friend Kevin Brown. Are you planning to travel somewhere where you can do some volunteer work If you are, the town of Lahaina, on the Hawaian island of Maui is a good option for you. Lahaina is a town rich in history and culture. In addition to its historical significance, Lahaina has an impressive architectural highlights, cultural experiences, and natural attractions. However, wildfires swept through this town. The fires destroyed 1,400 homes and 200,000 trees. Today, some Lahaina residents displaced by them are still in need of permanent homes. Maui's mayor is working to pass laws to help people get easier access to new housing. Local groups are working to rebuild. More than half of Maui’s money typically comes from tourism, but because of the fires, the island had to close to tourists. It officially reopened in November. When it did, it advertised a new type of trip. Now when people travel to Maui, they're asked to help. Tourists are given opportunities to volunteer, to support locally owned and eco-friendly businesses, and to leave the island better because of their visit. If you travel there, you can pull weeds and plant baby trees and native seedlings in nurseries across the island on volunteer days.
