On a sunny afternoon during my trip to Singapore, a simple yet impactful event unfolded that has left a lasting impression on me. I was enjoying a stroll through the bustling streets, sipping on a refreshing milk drink. As I finished the last drop, I looked around for a trash bin to dispose of the empty carton. Spotting a row of bins, I casually tossed the carton into one, assuming it was the right place for it.
However, my action was not as environmentally conscious as I had thought. A local Singaporean, noticing my mistake, approached with a polite smile. He bent down, retrieved the carton I had discarded, and placed it into a different bin. I stood there, slightly embarrassed, as he explained with a kind gesture that I had mistakenly thrown it into the bin for non-recyclable waste.
This small act was a powerful lesson in environmental awareness and the importance of following local recycling practices. It was a humbling moment, realizing that in a city-state known for its cleanliness and order, every individual plays a part in maintaining its pristine environment. The man’s action was not a scolding but a quiet demonstration of civic responsibility and respect for the environment.
This encounter in Singapore was more than just a lesson in recycling; it was a turning point for me. It inspired me to be more aware, more responsible, and more respectful in my travels. It was a small act that left a big impression, and it will forever be a part of my journey towards being a more conscientious global citizen.

Robot guide dogs may soon become available to the 17 million visually impaired people in China thanks to researchers from Northwestern Polytechnical University, who achieved a breakthrough using an artificial intelligence language model.
The AI guide dog can provide assistance in life such as crossing streets, using elevators and guiding indoor spaces without having to be connected to the internet. It is a big step in exploring the application of involved intelligence — an intelligent machine with a physical form that can interact with the environment in real-time using sensors to conduct instructions or make decisions. The research makes it possible to provide better guidance services for visually impaired people, especially for emotional companionship.
“Though in recent years there have been some electronic navigation aids(导航助手), such as electronic navigation helmets, navigation canes, and electronic guide dogs, they cannot engage in conversations with people or fully understand human instructions,” said Sun Zhe, an associate professor at the university’s School of Artificial Intelligence, Optics and Electronics, “They can only perform tasks according to pre-designed programs. They are just cold machines. That’s not enough. Visually impaired people face numerous challenges in daily life, including navigation difficulties and possible dangers, but smart guide dogs using the language model can offer them more convenient and safer guidance, effectively improving their life quality.” Sun said.
The research team began developing the smart guide dog based on the Al model at the end of last month. Its findings have been published in the Communications of the Chinese Computer Society. “The current results prove the possibility of this approach, but there is still some way to go before it can be put into practical application,” Sun said. “We will put more effort into it and make it available for those in need as soon as possible.”
28.What assistance can AI-guide dogs provide
A.Provide real-time guidance in daily life. B.Make emotional facial expressions.
C.Offer suggestions based on the internet. D.Replace you to make big decisions.
29.What does the phrase ‘cold machines’ refer to in the article
A.Machines that are not physically warm.
B.Machines that are outdated and ineffective.
C.Machines that are used in cold environments.
D.Machines that lack emotional understanding and interaction.
30.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.The team has developed AI-guide dogs for a long time.
B.AI - guide dogs have not been put into production yet.
C.Many scientists doubt the team’s research achievements.
D.There is a lack of funding for the project’s research.
31.What is the main focus of the article
A.The limitations of current navigation aids for the visually impaired.
B.The development of AI guide dogs for visually impaired individuals.
C.The emotional challenges faced by visually impaired people.
D.The advancements in artificial intelligence technology.

New research has found a link between the height of ceilings in exam halls and the performance of students. While the shape of a room can’t make you smarter, the environments we’re in have an effect on us. The authors of the study suggest that big and open rooms, with high ceilings, make it harder for students to focus on what’s in front of them.
A previous study from some of the same researchers, making use of brain mapping technology and virtual reality, had found a relationship between cognitive ability and the perceived size of a person’s surroundings. Here, the team wanted to do some real-world testing.
“We were curious to apply our lab findings to a real-world dataset and see if being in a large space while having to concentrate on an important task would result in a poorer performance,” says Isabella Bower.
The study analyzed exam results from 15,400 students over eight years and across three campuses referencing their scores against what was expected based on the coursework they’ d previously submitted.
In exam rooms with high ceilings, students tended to underperform compared to those taking exams in rooms with a “standard” ceiling height, even after accounting for age, gender, time, subject and prior exam experience — other factors potentially affecting the results.
“The key point is that large rooms with high ceilings seem to disadvantage students and we need to understand what brain mechanisms(机制)are at play, and whether this affects all students to the same degree, says Bower.
Those are questions that future research can find out. It’s clear that environment matters — and that we might not give students the best chance for success by holding exams in rooms that aren’t custom-built for the purpose.
“Examinations have been a key part of our education system for over 1,300 years, shaping students career paths and lives,” says Jaclyn Broadbent. “It’s crucial to recognize the potential impact of the physical environment on student performance and make necessary adjustments to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed.”
32.Why did the researchers conduct the study
A.To prove that large rooms have no effect on exam performance.
B.To apply lab findings to a real-world dataset and see the impact.
C.To show that standard ceiling height is the best for exam rooms.
D.To demonstrate that the physical environment has no influence on students.
33.What is future research expected to find out
A.Whether exam rooms with high ceilings will disadvantage students.
B.Whether other factors could potentially affect the results of the study.
C.Whether students are equally affected in exam rooms with high ceilings.
D.Whether brain mechanisms affect students in exam rooms with high ceilings
34.What is the author’s view on the importance of the physical environment in exams
A.It is crucial and can impact student performance significantly.
B.It is important but only affects a few students.
C.It is not important as it does not affect exam performance.
D.It is important but only in the context of large, open rooms.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for this passage
A.The Impact of Room Shape on Intelligence
B.The Role of Physical Environment in Education
C.The Effect of Ceiling Height on Exam Performance
D.The Importance of Brain Mechanisms in Exam Rooms

Making good eye contact is a quite difficult but significant part of good communication skills. If you want to improve your ability to look people in the eye, you can practice making eye contact on your own to give the right impression in conversations. 36
Try to relax as much as possible. The more you think about what you’re doing, the more awkward you’ll feel. Your nervousness can then be misinterpreted as dishonesty. 37 If you’re going into an important meeting or interview, do some breathing exercises. A few big, full, deep breaths can do a lot to calm you down.
38 It’s actually physically somewhat difficult to keep your eyes locked on both of another person’s eyes. It’s more common to focus on one, or on a spot on the face, rather than trying to look at both eyes at once. If it helps, try moving back and forth between the two eyes.
Break your gaze to make other gestures while listening. 39 This looks natural as well as providing you with a needed break if necessary.
Try to keep your eyes focused while you talk as well as listen. It’s one thing to look while you’re listening. 40 Don’t be afraid if you have to break your gaze occasionally, but try to keep your face and eyes forward and up as you’re talking.

It was the tail end of the depression(大萧条), and things were tough. Mom had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC.My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake five years earlier----I still remember it as if it were yesterday.
Looking back, I realize what Mom went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles were worn out. Constant moving was typical for my family in these times. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mom couldn’t pay it. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar Christmas fund for social assistance. Mom said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mom, I had been selling Christmas trees to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. Boots with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They had a price of twenty-three dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was very excited, as I hurried up the road to catch the bus. It was only half a mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then that I realized that at our house, we had nothing for Christmas. I knew then that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.
Suddenly, I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots while Mom was home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents. I stopped. The bus drove off without me, and I stood alone, but feeling as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I changed my mind and I realized what I had to do.

Last Friday afternoon, our school held an event themed “First Aid and Sport,” which was both educational and engaging.
The event covered essential first aid skills tailored for sports injuries, including how to treat sprains, strains, and concussions. Students actively participated in practical demonstrations and learned the importance of immediate care.
The event was a huge success, receiving us students’ high praise. It not only enhanced our first aid knowledge but also prepared us to handle emergencies on the sports field effectively.
写作二范文
Possible answer:
Across the street was a big grocery store called the Piggly Wiggley. I went into the store, brimming with happiness. I realized that the twenty-five dollars I had worked so hard for went a long way for groceries. I bought a turkey, ham and all the Christmas treats. I spent every dime of my hard-earned money. The owner of the grocery store said, “Son, you can’t pack all those groceries and carry them home yourself.” So I asked two boys with carriers on their bicycles to run them the half- mile down to our house.
I whispered for boys to quietly unload the groceries and pile them against the door. Once they had done this, with great excitement, I knocked on the door. I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mom opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside, and she just stood there dumbfounded. I cheered, “Merry Christmas! There really is a Santa Claus!” That day I got enough hugs from Mom to last two lifetimes. To see my mother’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all!
