Once upon a time, there was a poor man and a rich man. The poor man’s son was named Ham, and the rich man’s son was named Jim. They had been in the same school together since childhood and became good friends.
One day, the two youths began a discussion as to whether wealth or effort was more powerful. Jim said that wealth was most important, while Ham declared for effort. At last, Ham declared, “Let us put it to the test: Let us both go to some far country and try whether wealth or effort is more successful.” Jim agreed to this plan and they fixed a day for starting.
Then they both went home and collected some money and started off early one morning. After a time, they came to a certain country where Ham suggested that they should look for employment. But Jim did not like the notion of becoming a servant and he said that he would live on the money which he had brought with him, which would last for a year or two. “You may do as you like,” answered Ham, “but for my part, I must look for work.” So he went to a village and found employment as a teacher in a school while his friend rented a house and started making various friends, eating and having fun all day.
One year later, Ham earned enough money, built a beautiful house and also got married. However, Jim had already spent all his money, and his friends who indulged in wine and meat also left him. Hungry and sorrowful, he went to Ham and said, “My dear friend, regarding the question of ‘whether wealth or effort is more important’, I think I’ve already had the answer.”

TO GOOGLE is now in broad usage as a verb for getting information from the Internet. If the tech giant has its way, “I Googled” will become a standard reply to the question — “How did you get here ” On May 28th Google said it would build 100 autonomous (自动驾驶的) cars. It is the next stage in its obvious aim to be as common on the road as on computer screens.
People have dreamed about driver-less motoring since at least the 1930s, but only in recent years have carmakers such as Mercedes-Benz and Volvo given the matter more thought, equipping test cars with the sensors and complicated software required to pass through busy roads. Google has made rapid progress by designing a driver-less car from the ground up.
But bringing autonomous motoring to the world is proving harder than Google had imagined. It once promised it by 2017. Now it does not see production models coming out before 2020. The technology is far advanced, but it still needs to be made smaller and cheaper. Google’s current test cars are said to be filled with equipment worth $80,000.
Google’s latest efforts may have as much to do with convincing the public and lawmakers as improving the technology. The firm stresses that computers are more likely than humans to avoid accidents. The cars will have a top speed of just 25mph and a front end made of soft foam (泡沫) to protect careless pedestrians. The benefits could indeed be huge. Driving time could be given over to working, sleeping or surfing the Internet. However, the issue of liability (问责) in the event of a driver-less car crashing has yet to be resolved.
Turning cars into products may not be good news for traditional carmakers. But changing the concept of driving into service fits well with Google’s plans to become as big in hardware as in software. And unlike car firms. which talk vaguely of becoming “mobility providers”. Google has a lot of money to make this a reality and no worries about disturbing its current business. Google admits it still has “lots of work to do”. But I couldn’t agree more that one day Googling to the shops may be a common activity.
8. What’s Google’s next goal
A. To get driver-less cars on the road. B. To cut down the cost of making cars.
C. To become a tech giant in computer. D. To beat Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.
9. What benefits do Google’s driver-less cars have
A. There’s no problem with who to blame (责备) for a crash.
B. They can protect drivers from severe injury in the car crash.
C. Most of the accidents can be avoided due to the autonomous cars.
D. Drivers sometimes won’t be necessarily concentrated on the road.
10. What is the author’s attitude to the future of self-driving cars
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic.
11. What might be the best title of the passage
A. Google — the tech giant. B. Google’s Cars Trade.
C. Autonomous Vehicle Adventure. D. Google’s Driver-less Cars’ Journey.
D
Years ago, many Mexican gray wolves lived in the United States. In the 1800s, cattle farmers were worried that these wolves would hunt and eat their farm animals. During the 1800s and 1900s, farmers killed many of these wolves to try to protect their animals. These wolves almost went extinct.
In 1976, the U. S. government passed the Endangered Species Act. These wolves were finally protected! And with help, the species continues to survive today.
The White Mountain Apache Tribe (部落)has played an important role in keeping this species alive. They live on a large area of land in Arizona called the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. This area is also a wolf habitat.
Krista Beazley is a wolf biologist on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. She tracks the movements of Mexican gray wolves that live on the land. Scientists have put special radio collars on wolves. These collars send out beeping signals (蜂鸣信号)to a special hand-held antenna (手持天线). Biologists like Beazley use these antennas to track the wolves. She also follows their footprints and droppings. Wolf droppings tell biologists what the wolf ate, where it spends much of its time, and if it is sick. Beazley makes sure the wolves are alive and healthy.
The number of Mexican gray wolves living on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation is growing. Despite this remarkable progress, the species is still endangered. The White Mountain Apache Tribe continues to try to protect these wolves.
The White Mountain Apache Tribe also works to protect many other rare plant and animal species. For example, they saved the Apache trout from extinction by closing certain areas to fishing and by building trout habitats. They also protect habitats for animals like the Mexican spotted owl. The White Mountain Apache Tribe has a close connect ion with all of nature. Tribe members believe humans must honor the animals and nature around them.
12. Why did Mexican gray wolves almost die out during the 1800s and 1900s
A. They were eaten by farm animals. B. They were killed by cattle farmers.
C. Government passed laws to hunt them. D. They hardly survived in the extreme climates.
13. What was the result of the Endangered Species Act being passed
A. The Mexican gray wolf was protected.
B. The Mexican gray wolf disappeared completely.
C. The White Mountain Apache Tribe settled in Arizona.
D. The Fort Apache Indian Reservation became a wolf habitat.
14. What may best describe Krista Beazley
A. Kind and courageous. B. Careful and confident.
C. Hardworking and caring. D. Responsible and humorous.
15. What do we know about the White Mountain Apache Tribe
A. They care about animals and nature around them.
B. They work hard to build habitats for all animals.
C. Their unique task is to protect Mexican gray wolves.
D. They try to keep Mexican gray wolves from increasing.

David and George were best friends at school. They sat together in the same school classroom, shared sandwiches during lunch breaks, and had countless adventures together,
As George’s birthday approached, David noticed something that concerned him. It was George’s shoes, the soles (鞋底) of which were nearly worn through. They were no longer as comfortable as they should be, and David could tell that George needed a new pair of shoes and he decided to do something special for his friend on his birthday.
David’s thoughtful plan started with a conversation with his mum. He explained how much he cared for his friend George and how he wanted to gift him a pair of shoes for his birthday.
His mum, a kind and wise woman, agreed that it was a wonderful idea. She also wanted to teach David an important lesson about earning and giving. So, they discussed a plan together. “David,” his mum said, “I think it’s a lovely idea to buy shoes for George. But how about this I can give you some money for doing extra housework around the house. You can earn the money you need to buy the shoes. What do you think “David’s eyes lit up, and he smiled widely. “That’s a great idea, Mum! I want to do it. ”
David became a whirlwind (旋风) of activity around the house. He swept the floor, watered the plants, washed the clothes, and even helped his mum with the dishes. His determination to earn enough money for George’s gift shone through his every action.
