For many, denim (牛仔布) is a type of cloth; but for London-based artist Ian Berry, it’s a creative medium. For the last two decades, Berry has used the navy blue cloth to create various portraits (肖像), and even photorealistic descriptions of California. And his latest creation continues to reveal the unexpected and innovative ways denim can be used. Titled Secret Garden and recently on display at the Garden Museum in London, this work reimagines a peaceful setting with a fish pond, flowers, and plants — all made from recycled denim jeans.
The Secret Garden show was first exhibited at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York in 2017 and has since been displayed in various site-specific locations and galleries worldwide. Originally designing it for a young audience, Berry aimed to inspire children to reflect on our interaction with nature.
“The idea came from thinking many kids don’t have their own gardens and thinking of community gardens located between buildings and trying to inspire them to seek them out,” Berry says. “It also gave the opportunity to talk about sustainability as well as helping young minds think about where things come from.” The artist even showed the kids a cotton plant to explain where jeans come from. “It was amazing to see so many confused at the idea,” he recalls. “It enabled educators to talk about how in the show plants were turned into pants, then back to plants again.”
While the most recent Secret Garden show isn’t specifically designed for children, it still arouses a childlike sense of wonder. Visitors can walk through the denim garden path and find plants hanging above them. Various plants and flowers are depicted in shades of indigo (靛蓝色). There’s even a peaceful pond at the heart of the garden, featuring denim koi fish, and a central water feature. Every area of the garden showcases such an impressive level of details that it’s easy to forget that the entire show is handmade from denim.
4. What did Ian Berry use denim for
A. A kind of cloth for clothing. B. Covers for various portraits.
C. Bags for flowers and plants. D. Materials for his works of art.
5. What’s the aim of the Secret Garden show
A. To raise children’s awareness of nature. B. To get children in New York interested in art.
C. To tell the great use of denim in daily life. D. To explain how to recycle denim jeans.
6. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Children’s lack of nature knowledge. B. People’s confusion about Berry’s art.
C. Motivation of Berry’s artistic creation. D. Process of plant of different periods.
7. What is the characteristic of the show described in the last paragraph
A. Costly. B. Complicated. C. Abstract. D. Lifelike.
C
The first thing most of us do when working with people from a new culture is to learn about differences. And there are very sensible reasons to do so. It helps you avoid cultural misunderstandings. But focusing on differences alone can have its downsides. For one thing, there’s a likely chance you’ll be wrong. Focusing on differences can also be quite mentally taxing. So, if you don’t focus on differences, what then can you do to be more effective across cultures In our experience, an equally reasonable and highly effective alternative technique is to focus on similarities. And this change in perspective can have some pretty powerful effects.
If you think about it, this is probably exactly how you establish connections and relationships in your own culture. You don’t approach a person thinking about all the potential ways you could be different; instead, you naturally gravitate to similarities, finding things you might have in common to form the basis of a relationship. Although we tend to approach cross-cultural interactions quite differently, the same technique actually works just as well across cultures. When focused on similarities, you’re open to — and, in fact, looking for — a potential connection. Perhaps it’s a hobby you share in common with a coworker, or maybe both of you at a business meeting abroad have families you’re trying to connect with. By focusing on similarities you have the power to create connections and build relationships that either eliminate cultural differences or make them irrelevant.
Another advantage of this approach is that your coworkers are more likely to feel that you see them as an individual. On the other hand, focusing on similarities means you are suited to the particularities of the specific person you are interacting with. This is more likely to result in the other party feeling seen and heard for who they are, and can kick off a positive lift of mutual (相互的) openness and trust.
8. Why do people focus on differences in a multicultural company
A. To emphasize their own culture. B. To reduce unnecessary troubles.
C. To take advantage of other culture. D. To make the workplace multicultural.
9. What’s the significance of focusing on similarities in a multicultural company
A. The origin of the hobbies. B. The start of work efficiency.
C. The foundation of connections. D. The improvement of your family.
10. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Maintain. B. Strengthen. C. Remove. D. Worsen.
11. Which is the advantage of focusing on similarities in the last paragraph
A. Making others feel valued. B. Making yourself centred.
C. Indicating your interest. D. Making others adapt to your culture.
D
Have you ever wondered what chickens are talking about Chickens are quite the communicators — their clucks, squawks and purrs are not just random sounds but a complex language system. These sounds are their way of interacting with the world and expressing joy, fear, and social connection to one another.
Like humans, the “language” of chickens varies with age, environment, and surprisingly, domestication (驯化), giving us insights into their social structures and behaviours. Understanding these sounds can transform our approach to poultry (家禽) farming, enhancing chicken welfare and quality of life.
Our research at Dalhousie University applies artificial intelligence (AI) to decode the language of chickens. It’s a project that is set to revolutionize our understanding of these feathered creatures and their communication methods, offering a window into their world that was previously closed to us. The use of AI and machine learning is like having a universal translator for chicken speech. AI can analyze vast amounts of audio data. Our algorithms (算法) are learning to recognize patterns and tiny differences in chicken sounds. This isn’t a simple task — chickens have a range of sounds that vary in pitch, tone, and context. But by using advanced data analysis techniques, we’re beginning to crack their code. This breakthrough in animal communication is not just a scientific achievement; it’s a step towards more humane and empathetic treatment of farm animals.
One of the most exciting aspects of this research is understanding the emotional content behind these sounds. Are they stressed Are they content By understanding their emotional state, we can make more informed decisions about their care and environment.
This project isn’t just about academic curiosity; it has real-world implications. We’re not only unlocking the secrets of avian (鸟类的) communication but also setting new standards for animal welfare.
12. What can be learned about chickens
A. They lack emotions. B. They behave randomly.
C. They are communicative. D. They talk oddly.
13. What benefit will chickens get from the project
A. Better care. B. Faster growth rates.
C. Better food quality. D. Enhanced social skills.
14. What is a highlight of the research
A. Revealing chickens’ behaviours. B. Understanding chickens’ emotions.
C. Analyzing chickens’ living environment. D. Discovering advanced feeding methods.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Enhancing animal welfare by AI. B. The secret of chickens’ life.
C. Unlocking chickens’ language by AI. D. The future of poultry farming.

Nora lives in a low-lying section of Emsworth with her young children. Her husband died in a car accident two years ago. The accident left Nora with a disability, and her leg now aches with a constant reminder of the pain that day brought.
One summer, as the sky turned dark, a violent storm hit the town. The rain was so heavy that the rainwater could not flow away in a short period of time. The rainwater was about to flow into Nora’s home. Because of the disability, she was unable to evacuate (转移) her children to safety, and panic began to set in. In desperation, she cried out for help.
Nora’s neighbor, William, a young man known for his kindness and strength, heard Nora’s cry. He rushed out into the storm. The rain stung (刺) his face like a thousand needles, and the wind knocked him off his feet. A mix of fear and determination pushed him forward.
William reached Nora’s house. He found Nora stayed at the corner with the children, and their eyes were filled with fear. With a comforting smile, William picked up the children one by one and guided Nora, who leaned heavily on him for support. The journey to his home was dangerous, as the storm grew stronger. But William’s resolve was unwavering, and he managed to get them all to safety.
After they became safe, William wasted no time in calling upon the other neighbors. Together, they brought abandoned door panels, filled bags with dirt and piled the bags up behind the panels. They built a temporary wall in front of Nora’s house. The wall prevented the rainwater from flowing into Nora’s house. The crisis was finally resolved.
The next day, the storm stopped, but the town was in a mess. The streets were littered with fallen trees and thick mud. William led the charge in the cleanup efforts. He and his neighbors worked tirelessly. It wasn’t long before they were sweating heavily in the summer sun.

The competition started with a written test that assessed our understanding of traffic rules and safety measures and it required a deep knowledge of traffic regulations. The next round was an oral quiz, where we had to answer questions on the spot. This was where I felt my preparation paid off, as I was able to recall much I had studied.
As far as I’m concerned, the competition is not just about passing a test but about saving lives. I hope more students will join in future events to raise awareness about traffic safety.

Nora was grateful for the help she had received and wanted to make her contribution. She decided to make lemonade, a refreshing drink to stop the thirst of those who were working hard outside. She asked the oldest child to go to the supermarket to buy lemons, sugar and paper cups. The children volunteered to help Nora when they found what their mother was going to do. Nora made lemonade and poured it into paper cups and the children served drinks to the neighbors who were sweeping the streets.
The neighbors stopped to drink the lemonade the children served. They instantly felt much cooler, and the tiredness was disappearing. William called the children over and asked who made the lemonade. After knowing that it was Nora who made the lemonade, William was very touched. William asked the children to show his appreciation to Nora. But the oldest child said, “It was you and the neighbors who helped us weather the storm. We would like to thank you.” The truth was that when we are in trouble, kindness and unity shine brightly, creating an atmosphere of support and gratitude around us.
