Jeff Kromrey, 69, will sit down with his daughter the next time she visits and show her how to access his online accounts if he has an unexpected health crisis. Gayle Williams, 69, plans to tackle a project she’s been putting off for months: organizing all her financial information. These seniors have been inspired to take these actions by an innovative course for such “solo agers”: Aging Alone Together, offered by Dorot, a social services agency in New York City.
More than 1,000 people have participated in the program since it was launched in 2021. Dorot is working with partners across the country to expand its reach. The program consists of six 90-minute, interactive weekly sessions that focus on the seniors’ key concerns: building communities of support, figuring out where to live, completing advance care directives such as living wills, and getting financial and legal affairs in order.
The program is to help participants overcome fear and hesitation when planning for their uncertain futures. Practical tools, advice, and resources are provided to motivate people to take action. Additionally, it aims to develop a sense of community that promotes a “can do” attitude. As Nisen emphasized, “Solo aging doesn’t mean aging alone; instead, it means planning for the future.”
That message moved Davis deeply, a single artist in Manhattan, who is facing the challenge of finding meaningful activities as arthritis (关节炎) limits his ability to paint. Despite having long-term care insurance and a rent-regulated apartment with an elevator, he feels lonely without his artistic pursuits (追求).
“There are days that go by when I don’t say a word to anyone,” Davis admitted. “I have my friends, but they have their own lives, with their children and grandchildren. I’m turning to Dorot for more social contact. And Aging Alone Together has helped me focus on the here and now.”
4. Why does the author mention Jeff Kromrey and Gayle Williams in paragraph 1
A. To introduce Dorot’s program. B. To illustrate the daily life of the elderly.
C. To highlight family ties. D. To show the significance of a course.
5. What is one goal of Aging Alone Together
A. To donate money regularly to seniors.
B To guide seniors to embrace loneliness.
C. To encourage seniors to plan for the future.
D. To help seniors overcome the fear of living alone.
6. What is Davis’ attitude towards Aging Alone Together
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Challenges of Aging Alone
B. Approaches to Overcoming Loneliness
C. Dorot’s Initiative: Finding Balance in Solo Aging
D. Empowering Seniors: Aging Alone Together Program
C
Research shows that when social media use is high, depression is also high. But the question is — is that because social media causes that person to be depressed Or is it because people who are depressed tend to also use social media more, and spend less time exercising and being in green spaces “That is what we wanted to understand,” says Carol Vidal, the first author of the study, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.
In their study, 376 young adults in Canada were asked to complete three online questionnaires between May 2021 and January 2022. At each point, participants self-reported depressive symptoms based on the PHQ-9 — a nine-item scale (表) that is commonly used to measure depression — as well as social media use, green space exposure, and physical activity.
Researchers found that participants who had higher social media use tended to be more depressed, and people who were more depressed also tended to use social media more. However, researchers found that social media use did not cause an increase or decrease in depressive symptom levels over time.
Researchers also found that higher levels of social media use and higher levels of depressive symptoms were associated with lower levels of green space exposure. In addition, higher eveningness was also associated with higher depressive symptom levels.
One study author says these results show social media use and depression are associated, but do not provide evidence that greater social media use predicts an increase in depressive symptoms over time. Other professionals in the team also say these findings indicate people who suffer from depression should be careful about the amount of time they spend on social media and should be encouraged to integrate other healthy habits into their lifestyle.
Vidal and other investigators believe there are many aspects to social media, and there are important next steps to learn more about its impact on the mental health of people of all ages, including younger children and adolescents.
8. Why did Carol Vidal conduct the study
A. To explore how depression affects social media use.
B. To investigate if green spaces benefit mental health.
C To find the link between social media and depression.
D. To determine why social media contributes to depression.
9. How did the researchers measure depression in the study
A. By using a nine-item form called PHQ-9.
B. By observing the participants’ daily behavior.
C. By asking the participants’ friends and families.
D. By analyzing the participants’ social media posts.
10. What do the researchers advise people with depression to do
A. Avoid using mobile phones. B. Develop healthy eating habits.
C. Seek professional help regularly. D. Cut down the time on social media.
11. What does the follow-up study aim to find out
A. The types of social media.
B. The influence of social media on mental health.
C The popularity of social media among younger children.
D. Effective ways to limit social media use among the youth.
D
Companies may unintentionally hurt their sales by including the words “artificial intelligence (AI)” when describing their offerings that use the technology, according to a study led by Washington State University researchers. In the study, published in the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management, researchers conducted experimental surveys with more than 1,000 adults in the U.S. to evaluate (评估) the relationship between AI inclusion and consumer behavior.
The findings consistently showed products described as using AI were less popular, according to Mesut Cicek, clinical assistant professor of marketing and lead author of the study. “When AI is mentioned, it tends to lower emotional trust, which in turn reduces purchase intentions,” he said. “We found emotional trust plays a critical role in how consumers view AI-powered products.”
In the experiments, the researchers included questions and descriptions across diverse product and service categories. For example, in one experiment, participants were presented with similar descriptions of smart televisions. The only difference was that the term AI was included for one group and omitted for the other. The group that saw AI included in the product description indicated they were less likely to purchase the television.
Researchers also discovered that negative response to AI inclusion was even stronger for “high-risk” products and services, those which people commonly feel more uncertain or anxious about buying, such as expensive electronics, medical devices or financial services. Because failure carries more risk, which may include money loss or danger to physical safety, mentioning AI for these types of descriptions may make consumers more careful and less likely to purchase, according to Cicek. “We tested the effect across eight different product and service categories, and the results were all the same,” Cicek said.
Cicek said the findings provide valuable insights for companies. “Marketers should carefully consider how they present AI in their product descriptions or develop strategies to increase emotional trust. Emphasizing AI may not always be beneficial, particularly for high-risk products, and mainly focus on describing the features or benefits,” he said.
12. What is the primary focus of the study
A. Why consumers fail to trust AI. B. How AI affects product sales.
C. Why Al is considered innovative. D. How AI impacts companies’ strategies.
13. What does the underlined word “omitted” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Removed. B. Added. C. Repeated. D. Highlighted.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. The risk of financial loss is the biggest concern from consumers.
B. Consumers are more careful when AI is used in high-risk products.
C. Researchers tested the effect of AI mainly on expensive electronics.
D. This is the first time for people to test AI’s effect in service categories.
15. What should companies do according to Cicek
A. Highlight AI only for low-risk products.
B. Improve the product quality to attract customers.
C. Enhance consumers’ emotional trust in products.
D. Avoid mentioning AI in their product descriptions.

Although I felt nervous at the starting line, I pushed myself to run as fast as I could. When I crossed the finish line, I was out of breath but extremely proud. This experience not only tested my physical ability but also strengthened my determination and perseverance.
Through this, I realized the importance of challenging oneself and appreciating the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship. Such activities are truly memorable and inspiring.

【答案】One possible version:
With a big smile on his face, Evan told his mom the whole story. Evan described how he met Mrs. Carter, how she offered him a job to earn a bouquet, and how he worked hard for a week at her flower shop. Hearing her 8-year-old say such things, Stacey couldn’t hold back her ears and hugged him tightly. She was proud of her son’s determination and hard work. “Thank you for caring for me, darling. I love you so much!” Evan smiled and was about to give her the bouquet when he suddenly noticed something. “Oh wait, Mom! There’s something inside…”
When Evan looked at the envelope, he thought of Mrs. Carter immediately. Evan and his mom opened the envelope and a ticket to the City Art Museum dropped. They thought Mrs. Carter must have made this by mistake, so they decided to return it. When Evan and his mom arrived at Mrs. Carter’s shop the next morning and explained their purpose, the old lady smiled and said that she didn’t leave it by mistake, explaining that it was a gift for the mother’s birthday, with which she could relax herself. Evan and his mom were moved by Mrs. Carter’s kindness. To return her kindness, they invited Mrs. Carter for dinner that night, and they celebrated Stacey’s birthday together. Mrs. Carter’s support meant a lot to Evan and his mom and they also made Mrs. Carter feel the warmth of home.
