Gideon Mendel, a photojournalist who has been documenting climate change through his series “Submerged Portraits”. Starting his project in 2007, Mendel’s goal is to make the impact of climate change on human deeply felt, moving away from typical imagery of glaciers and polar bears to focus on flood-affected individuals.
He goes where the floods are— floods typically linked to climate change. But instead of racing to capture ongoing storms and rainfall, he waits for the water to settle and tries to capture the trauma(创伤)endured by communities. His subjects stand still in their flooded homes, creating heart-breaking images that convey both aesthetic(美学的)beauty and profound content. These portraits come from 13 different flood zones across the globe, demonstrating the wide existence of climate change impacts.
As Mendel continues his work, he shifts towards video, creating installations(装置)like Deluge, which is part of the photography exhibition “Coal + Ice” at New York’s Asia Society. The exhibition, showing videos of flood survivors returning home, emphasizes the personal and global consequences of climate change.
“He makes it human and real, that we are all vulnerable and impacted by climate change, regardless of where we live or what our income is,” commented Tzeporah Berman, chair and founder of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, after viewing Deluge. “He brings to life not just what’s happening in the landscape but shows the despair in people’s faces.”
Mendel’s long-term mission to portray trauma connects deeply with his family history of the Holocaust, influencing both his artistic and activist pursuits. Despite the connection, he says, “Real activists take risks and go to prison and put themselves on the line. I only put my pictures online.”
24.What effect may Mendel’s photographs of flood survivors have on viewers
A.Calming. B.Touching. C.Refreshing. D.Challenging.
25.What do we know about “Coal+ Ice”
A.It focuses on historical flood events.
B.It highlights the impact of climate change.
C.It gives birth to installations like Deluge.
D.It displays the aesthetic beauty of flood zones.
26.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Mendel only cares about online exposure.
B.Mendel takes the same risks as real activists.
C.Mendel holds a humble attitude towards his efforts.
D.Mendel’s mission is irrelevant to his family history.
27.Which of the following best describes Mendel
A.Devoted and sympathetic. B.Passionate and humorous.
C.Ambitious and courageous. D.Thoughtful and generous.

Marmosets, those small and adorable monkeys native to South America, are far more sophisticated than they appear. According to a new study, members of marmoset troops use specific vocalizations— “phee calls”— to call each other by names. A naming system like this is no trivial discovery in any species, considering how few wild animals are known to have one. It is the first time such behavior has been observed in primates other than humans.
To reveal the secrets of marmosets, the researchers recorded natural conversations between pairs of marmosets, who could not see but could hear each other. They found that marmosets use phee calls to engage in turn-taking dialogues and even identify details about whoever is producing them. The distinctive features and flexibility of these calls suggest that marmosets might use them to label and communicate with each other within their social groups. Interestingly, this behavior extends beyond closely related individuals, indicating that marmosets learn names and pronunciation details from fellow troop members.
Marmosets inhabit thick rainforest canopies across a swath of South America, where vocally labeling each individual troop member might offer an adaptive advantage, the researchers note. Visibility is limited in these dense treetops, but using vocal labels as names might assist marmosets in staying connected and working together as a group while they are spending significant amounts of time out of each other’s sight. In fact, this might even hint at how some of our prehuman ancestors developed social communication and language.
“Marmosets live in small monogamous(一夫一妻制)family groups and take care of their young together, much like humans do,” Omer says. “These similarities suggest that they faced comparable evolutionary social challenges to our early pre-linguistic ancestors, which might have led them to develop similar communicating methods.”
28.What does the underlined word “trivial” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Rare. B.Significant. C.Complicated. D.Unimportant.
29.What did the researchers discover about phee calls used by marmosets
A.They are vocalizations unique to marmosets.
B.They are abandoned by closely related individuals.
C.They are fixed without flexibility in dialogues.
D.They are used for communication and identification.
30.In which way might vocal labeling benefit marmosets in the rainforest
A.Defending each individual troop member.
B.Enhancing the visibility in the rainforest.
C.Maintaining social bonds in low visibility conditions.
D.Spending more time with closely related individuals.
31.What might contribute to marmosets’ similar communicating methods as early human ancestors
A.Small family groups. B.Similar social challenges.
C.Identical living environments. D.Comparable linguistic system.
D
The approach is an early example of “self-healing grid(输电网)” technology, which uses AI to detect and repair problems such as power cuts autonomously and without human intervention when issues occur, such as storm-damaged power lines. Although further research is needed before this system can be implemented and scaled to real-world power grids, it is still an exciting development for the nation’s troubled power grid, according to researchers.
Power grids worldwide face challenges from increasing extreme weather events, cyberattacks, and rising demand. Therefore, it’s crucial to develop tools that modernize the system and make it more resilient(有适应力的)against future power cuts. The North American grid is a vast, complex network of transmission and distribution lines, generation facilities, and transformers that inefficiently delivers electricity from power sources to consumers.
Using various scenarios in test networks, the research team demonstrated that its solution can automatically identify alternative routes to transfer electricity to users before a power cut occurs. Once trained, the AI-driven system can reroute electrical flow in microseconds, vastly outpacing current processes involving classical engineering techniques or human intervention, which can take minutes to hours.
Their goal is to quickly find the best path to send power to the majority of users. They use machine learning algorithms on graphs to understand complex relationships in power networks. This helps them see how components are connected and how electricity flows. They also rely on reinforcement learning, where a virtual agent is positioned in a simulation(模拟)environment of the real problem— to systematically play out scenarios and progressively learn from this experience. An example of knowledge gained from such experience would be if a line fault blocks electricity, the system can rearrange using switches and draw power from neighbouring sources, like solar panels or batteries on a university campus or business.
After focusing on preventing power cuts, the researchers now aim to develop similar technology to repair and restore the grid following disruptions, like those caused by natural hazards.
32.Why is the North American grid mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.To showcase the necessity for grid modernization.
B.To illustrate the complexity of modern power networks.
C.To emphasize its unique challenges not found elsewhere.
D.To show it has adopted “self-healing grid” technology.
33.What is the advantage of the self-healing grid system
A.It allows the power grid to generate more electricity.
B.It involves necessary classical engineering techniques.
C.It automatically transfers electricity to users on demand.
D.It significantly quickens the process of rerouting electricity.
34.How might the system handle a line fault blocking electricity
A.By waiting for human intervention.
B.By getting rid of solar panels and batteries.
C.By redirecting and using power from nearby sources.
D.By using a traditional power distribution mapping system.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Grid Modernization: A Road to Self Healing
B.Self-Healing Grid Technology: Full of Potential
C.Al-Driven Rerouting: Key to Energy-Efficiency
D.Al: Preventing Power Cuts with Machine Learning

In a small town, there lived an old woman named Mrs. Thompson who was known for her kind heart. However, she had been living alone since her husband passed away and her reclusive(隐居的)nature kept her a bit apart from others. She lived a lonely life, with her well-tended garden as her only comfort. The garden was an abundance of colors, filled with roses, daisies, and various herbs. Each plant was cared for with her full love and attention.
One day, a young girl named Lily moved into the neighborhood. Lily was a curious and friendly child, but she had been through a difficult time as she was recovering from a serious illness and was often sad and lonely.
One afternoon, Lily was walking past Mrs. Thompson’s house and was attracted by the beautiful garden. She pecked over the fence and saw Mrs. Thompson tending to the flowers. Mrs. Thompson noticed Lily and invited her in. Lily was hesitant at first but then walked in with a shy smile.
Mrs. Thompson showed her around the garden and told her about the different plants and their uses. She picked a few herbs and made a cup of tea for Lily, saying it was good for her health. Lily drank the tea and felt a warmth and comfort she hadn’t felt in a long time.
As the days passed, Lily became a frequent visitor to the garden. Mrs. Thompson taught her how to plant seeds, water the plants, and take care of them. Lily’s health gradually improved, and she started to smile and laugh more.
However, one day, Mrs. Thompson fell ill and was hospitalized. Learning of this, Lily rushed to the hospital to ensure her well-being. During their conversation, she knew Mrs. Thompson was worried about her garden, fearing that without her care, the flowers and herbs she cherished would wither(枯萎).

第一节
An Unforgettable Eco-Friendly Hiking Event
Last weekend, I participated in an eco-friendly hiking event organized by our school, themed “Protecting the Green Begins with Me.”
The event commenced at 8 a. m. on Saturday and concluded around noon. It started from the school gate and led us through a picturesque route within the nearby national park. Throughout the hike, participants were buried in actively picking up litter on the ground to maintain the natural beauty. Moreover, we made every endeavour to spread the importance of preserving the environment to others and encouraged them to adopt greener habits.
In conclusion, this experience was so meaningful that it reinforced my responsibility of protecting our environment as an individual.
第二节
Lily decided to take up the responsibility in her place. Equipped with the skills Mrs. Thompson had taught her, Lily began to tend the garden. She watered the plants gently, making sure each one got the right amount and carefully removed the weeds that threatened the flowers. Lily treated the garden as if it were her own, determined to keep it blooming until Mrs. Thompson recovered. She even made herbal tea and took it to the hospital, hoping it could also help Mrs. Thompson recover faster. When seeing the tea, Mrs. Thompson smiled an understanding simile and drank it. With time passing by, Mrs. Thompson was getting better and the day of her hospital release arrived. Lily went to collect her merrily.
Accompanied by Lily, Mrs. Thompson returned home. As she stepped into her beloved garden, she was amazed to see how well-maintained it was. The flowers were blooming beautifully, and the herbs were flourishing. She felt a warm glow in her heart, knowing that Lily had taken great care of her precious garden in her absence. Mrs. Thompson expressed her sincere gratitude, tears blurring her eyes. From that day on, Lily continued to visit Mrs. Thompson and help her with the garden. Their bond grew stronger, and they became like family to each other. They no longer felt lonely and enjoyed together the beauty and tranquility the garden brought to them.

24.B 根 据 第 二 段“His subjects stand still in their flooded homes, creating heart-breaking images that convey both aesthetic beauty and profound content.”(他的拍摄对象站在被洪水淹没的家园中,一动不动,创造出令人心碎的画面,这些画面既具有美学之美,又包含了深刻的内涵。)
25.B 根据第三段“The exhibition, showing videos of flood survivors returning home, emphasizes the personal and global consequences of climate change.”(展览展示了洪水幸存者回家的视频,强调了气候变化对个人和全球的影响。)“Coal+Ice”摄影展通过展示洪水幸存者返回家园的视频,突显了气候变化的影响。因此,正确答案是 B。
26.C 根据最后一段“Real activists take risks and go to prison and put themselves on the line. I only put my pictures online.”(真正的活动家会冒险、坐牢,把自己置于危险之中。
此外,根据倒数第二段Tzeporah Berman 指出, Mendel 的作品“He made it human and real, that we are all vulnerable and impacted by climate change, regardless of where we live...”(他使其人性化且真实,即我们所有人都是脆弱的,并且受到气候变化的影响,无论我们生活在哪里或收入如何。)
28.D 根据第一段“A naming system like this is no trivial discovery in any species, considering how few wild animals are known to have one.”(在任何物种中,这样的命名系统都不是微不足道的发现,考虑到很少有野生动物已知拥有这种系统。)。
29.D 根据第二段话“They found that marmosets use phee calls to engage in turn-taking dialogues and even identify details about whoever is producing them. The distinctive features and flexibility of these calls suggest that marmosets might use them to label and communicate with each other within their social groups.”(他们发现狨猴使用phee calls进行轮流对话,并且这些叫声还能传递关于发出叫声者的细节信息。
30.C 根据第三段“Visibility is limited in these dense treetops, but using vocal labels as names might assist marmosets in staying connected and working together as a group while they are spending significant amounts of time out of each other’s sight.”(在这些茂密的树冠中, 能见度有限,但使用声音标签作为名字可能有助于狨猴在彼此看不见的时候保持联系,并作为一个群体一起合作。)。
31.B 根据最后一段“These similarities suggest that they faced comparable evolutionary social challenges to our early pre-linguistic ancestors, which might have led them to develop similar communicating methods.”(这些相似之处表明, 它们面临着与我们早期非语言祖先相似的进化社会挑战,这可能导致它们发展出类似的沟通方法。)。
32.A 根据第二段“Power grids worldwide face challenges from increasing extreme weather events, cyberattacks, and rising demand. Therefore, it’s crucial to develop tools that modernize the system and make it more resilient against future power cuts.”(全球电网面临极端天气事件增多、网络攻击和需求上升等挑战。
33.D 根据第三段“Once trained, this AI-driven system can reroute electrical flow in microseconds, vastly outpacing current processes involving classical engineering techniques or human intervention, which can take minutes to hours.”(一旦经过训练,这个由AI驱动的系统可以在微秒内重新路由电流,在速度上大大超过当前涉及传统工程技术或人为干预的流程,这些流程可能需要几分钟到几小时。)。
34.C 根据第四段“An example of knowledge gained from such experience would be if a line fault blocks electricity, the system can rearrange using switches and draw power from neighbouring sources, like solar panels or batteries on a university campus or business.”(从这样的经验中获得的一个例子是,如果线路故障导致电力中断,系统可以通过开关重新配置,并从邻近来源获取电力,比如大学校园或企业上的太阳能电池板或电池。)。
G“This practice did help them maintain mental strength during hardship.”
这与后文提到的“Even briefly silencing one’s mind amidst work pressures or digital distractions requires practice.”(即使在工作压力或数字干扰下暂时静心也需要练习)紧密相连,表明了冥想的复杂性和挑战性。
F“That is why some schools have started teaching mindfulness techniques.”
B“To embark on a meditation journey,start small.”
A“Keep practicing and don’ t give up!”
