I never thought I’d hear myself say it, but I’ve grown to enjoy lifting weights, and I’ve learned something from doing it. I enjoy the sense of strength and discipline that comes when the muscles are forced to resist. I’ve tried varying schedules —lifting every day, every other day, two days on and a day off. The every day approach is the least effective. I get the best strengthening results when I give myself a break.
The same is true with mind and spirit. Without giving a chance to reenergize yourself, you begin to break down all the connective fibers of your life. I used to just give myself Sundays off. Now I’m scheduling downtime in the midst of everything—and “everything” includes reading two magazines, building a house in Hawaii, working on an ABC movie —and, oh yeah, my day job. Keeping it all straight was beginning to feel a little stressful. So I told myself that just because I have ten free minutes on my calendar doesn’t mean I want to fill them. Breathing space has to become part of my daily routine.
So instead of having people lined up outside my office after the first show—I tape two a day —I do nothing for at least ten minutes. The change has worked wonders. I have more energy, and I’m in a better mood for the second show and all the business that comes afterward.
Now that I have the summer off to sit under the trees reading, napping, writing, and thinking, I know for sure it’s time well spent. I’m refilling my tank so that by fall, when the new season begins, I’ll be fired up and ready for whatever is to come. Fully restored.

School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D. C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market.
Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p. m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit organization that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed, or to learn the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.
28.What does Roshawn Little think of the summer outdoor activity
A.It is a good way to earn pocket money. B.It has improved her family relationship.
C.It contributes to her healthy eating habit. D.It is helpful to her performance at school.

A.To promote teachers’ teaching skills. B.To provide a creative way of learning.
C.To get students interested in science. D.To invite students to care for plants.

A.Its influence. B.Its strategies. C.Its operations. D.Its organizers.

B.Happy Holiday, Sweet Memory: How Kids Enjoy the Harvest
C.Outdoor Classrooms: Get out for the Weekend’s Farmers Market
D.Healthy Eaters, Strong Minds: What School Gardens Teach Kids

The way you learn most effectively will impact many different aspects of your life. Visual (视觉的) learners process information best when it’s presented with images drawn on a whiteboard, charts or graphs. Visual learners usually process pictures before they read printed text and are also able to visualize concepts quickly. People who are visual learners would prefer it if instruction is printed rather than given verbally (口头地), and may often write or draw when attempting to make sense of a new topic. Many visual learners remember something better once they’ve written it down or drawn it out.
Auditory (听觉的) learners process information best when it’s said out loud, such as in a lecture setting or spoken presentation. This type of learners can easily recall what others say and prefer to talk through topics they find complex or difficult to understand. People who are auditory learners prefer verbal directions and may use repetition or repeat things aloud to memorize things. They may ask questions to understand the subject matter better and may need to hear something repeated more than once before they fully comprehend. Auditory learners also often benefit from listening to recordings as a method of absorbing new concepts.
Kinesthetic (动觉的) learners process information through experience rather than by being shown or told. This type of learners prefer to do things that are more “hands-on”. They prefer to touch and feel items and can easily recall things they’ve done. People who are kinesthetic learners like to make and create things using their hands, and remember information best when they are physically involved. Kinesthetic learners like to take part in the process by shadowing or assisting (helping) others, and prefer to practice concepts as a way to absorb new information.
Take time to consider how you prefer to take in new information. Think about the last time how you worked to ensure you retained the information. The answers to these questions will help you discover which learning style works best for you.
32.What do visual learners do to form an idea in mind
A.Visualize or read something. B.Process or present something.
C.Recall or speak. D.Write or draw.
33.Who can underdstand something repeated better
A.Visual learners. B.Auditory learners. C.Kinesthetic learners. D.Lifelong learners.
34.What does the underlined word “shadowing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Listening carefully. B.Memorizing perfectly.
C.Following and watching closely. D.Asking repeatedly.
35.What is author’s purpose of writing this passage
A.To help readers explore learning styles.
B.To introduce effective learning methods.
C.To arouse readers’ curiosity about learning.
D.To inform readers of a new scientific study about learning.

Whether you’re heading out for a day trip or a quick weekend getaway, we will share some travel tips in this guide to help you make your experience more enjoyable.
·Think about how you want to travel.
36 Sometimes it means the most enjoyable. Too much consideration on short journeys is not worth it. If you’ve got a preference for a certain means of transport, it’s often worth traveling that way for short distances, even if it ends up taking you a little longer.
· 37
Some cities, like NYC, are quite walk able. Others simply aren’t. In Amsterdam, the best way to get about is by bike —whether you use the city’s shared bikes or rent one from your hotel. In Southeast Asia, you’d better rent a scooter (小型摩托车). 38 So don’t bother to find the so-called one-size-fits-all answer.
·Try all the available options.
If you’re not sure about the best means of transport for you, experience them all. See what catching the subway is like, try cycling or riding the bus. It’s hard to predict what will be the most convenient. LA has a low-cost public transport network but car-pooling is cheaper, and scooters are the best for getting around West Hollywood. 39
·Don’t rely on map apps.
Map apps are useful, but they don’t take into account the possibility of packed subways, queues for taxis and the heat of a train in summer. 40 So don’t assume something is a 30-minute drive just because a map app says so —by the time you’ve driven halfway, you might still have another 30 minutes to go.
A.Don’t limit your choices.
B.It takes time to find the best.
C.You won’t know until you try them all.
D.Study the city you will travel to.
E.What works here might not work there.
F.The best doesn’t necessarily mean the fastest.
G.Besides, they are a bit behind the real traffic time.

At present, the take-out industry has become a popular consumption pattern. Apart from 56 (buy) food from take-out stores, consumers can order food at different times and in multiple places 57 the help of the network. While we tend to think of take-out food as something originating in the modern era (时代) as a result of our “too busy to prepare my own meal” lifestyle, the 58 (true) is quite the opposite.

If there’s one thing I can’t stand people saying, it’s, “I’m no good at anything… I don’t have any talent.” I just don’t buy that at all. To me, everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist. There was a time when I didn’t believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in 2012.
At that time I was a high school student. I was a funny-looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds. I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned, in just about every other department I was a loser. I wanted to fit in, to be someone and do something well. But I hadn’t found anything I was good at. One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school’s running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events. I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin (标枪). Suddenly something inside me began saying, “Try it! Try it! ” I had to wait my turn, though, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw—the best throw going about 30 yards—I looked at the teacher.
“Hey, Orowitz, you want to try ” he asked. Embarrassed, I looked down, but managed to nod my head. “Well, come on then,” he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin. Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand, I was seized with a strange feeling—a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason, I was relaxed over what I was about to do, even though I’d never done it before. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go. The same voice that had urged me to throw it, now told me it was a good throw.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
I watched as the spear took off with my heart quickening
That night I took the javeli home with me.

Dear Miss Alisen,
It was a great honour for me to attend a recitation contest organized by you themed “Tang Poetry” last week. As a Chinese student, I appreciate foreigners admiring Chinese culture so much.
But I have some opinions about the recitation contest. First, some participants didn’t quite understand the real meaning of the Tang Poetry they recited, so they didn’t put many affections into them. Besides, some characters were wrongly pronounced, which made the lines sound funny.
So I hope later before the contest you should train the participants about the poems. Only when they truly understand them can they make excellent performances.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1:
I watched as the spear took off with my heart quickening. Honestly, afraid of failure as well as the scornful words that would follow, I didn’t dare watch the spear land and in-stead, took a glimpse at my teacher. To my surprise, there was no hint of disappointment on his face, but pleasure and appreciation. Then he came and tapped me on the shoulder, “Oh! 30 yards! Just as far as the present best throw! Is it really your first attempt ” Before I could utter a word, he added, “You are definitely gifted in this e to join our javelin team!” Determinedly, I nodded.
Paragraph 2:
That night I took the javeli home with me. Holding it tightly, I told myself I was born for this. The next day I started to participate in the regular training and before long became so strong that no one in the district could defeat me. What’s more, I got to know myself better through talking to others and therefore, discovered more talents inside me which had been unexpected before. So I would say that there is no such a person with no talent. All you need to do is keep trying and testing your limits. And thanks to my courage in 2012, I got to push my boundaries and improve my capabilities, which shaped the “talented” me today.

36.F 本空是段落的总起句,与下文提到的“Sometimes it means the most enjoyable.”

W: Why not I love musicals.

M: Alright. I promise I will. I feel really guilty about my mistake.
W: It’s useless to regret the thing that has been done.
M: I have apologized to Mr. Scott.

M: Sure, Maria. This Saturday.
W: Well, I’d like to have a party in our house this Saturday evening.

W: Thank you, Dad. I’ll go to the supermarket to buy something with Mum this afternoon.

M: Every October, farmers across the US harvest millions of pumpkins. Some are selected to win contests like the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off held annually in Half Moon Bay, California. Celebrating its 45th year in 2018, the contest has always been extremely popular with pumpkin growers. However, it has become even more so since supermarket chain Safeway, which sponsors the event, increased the maximum prize to $30,000 in 2015. To qualify for this world record prize, competitors have to produce a world record pumpkin. In 2018, that meant one heavier than the huge 2,624-pound pumpkin, which broke the previous world record at the Giant Pumpkin European Championship in 2016. If the heaviest pumpkin weighs less, the owner receives $7 per pound, which, given the size of the gourds (葫芦科植物), adds up to thousands of dollars in cash.
The event, which took place on October 8th, 2018, attracted more than 20 huge pumpkins. Though 12 came in at more than 1,000 pounds each, it was three-time winner Steven Daletas who took home the top prize of $15,190.
