A year ago in August, Dave Fuss lost his job of driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift-$7,000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially,” says Dave.
But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive an unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $100,000.
It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million-they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.
Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They liked comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.
Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything,” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden. “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”
Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy, a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents, would enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.
Neighbors helping neighbors-that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story.
4. What can we learn about the Fusses
A. Dave used to work in the local school cafeteria.
B. They lost their home soon after Dave lost his job.
C. Gerrie worked as a truck driver for a small company.
D. Dave found it challenging to find a job after his unemployment.
5. How did the Hatches get more than $3 million
A. By saving and accumulating the money.
B. By running their enterprises and selling products.
C. By receiving the money from their last generations.
D By being compensated by the insurance company for the accident.
6. Why did the Hatches pay for local children to attend summer camp
A. Their parents lacked enough money.
B. Their parents turned to them for help.
C. The Hatches asked them if they needed anything.
D. The Hatches were looked after by their parents often.
7. How did almost all the people respond to the Hatches’ owning so much wealth
A. They felt doubtful. B. They felt quite pleased.
C. It was within their imagination. D. It was out of their expectation.

Every year thousands of people come to the city of Pamplona, in north-eastern Spain, for the opportunity to run for their lives as six fighting bulls are released to charge through the town. There are injuries and deaths every year, but the event is of interest to many people. A paper just published in Science describes the insight the event offers into the psychology of panicked crowds.
That is a useful topic to explore. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners must try to work out how people will behave in the event of a disaster like a fire, a flood or a terrorist attack so they can design their creations to avoid potentially deadly collisions (碰撞). Unfortunately, solid information is hard to obtain. Daniel Parisi, the paper’s lead author, realized that the Pamplona bull-runs offered the perfect natural experiment.
Dr. Parisi and his team went to two different rooftop locations in Pamplona in July 2023, and filmed the runners as the animals were released. Later in the lab, they calculated the speed of the runners, the density (密度) of
the crowd, the probability of a runner tripping and falling and the relationship between runner-group density and speed.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the researchers found that runners picked up speed when the bulls drew near. Less expected was the finding that the speed of individual runners increased with the density of the crowd, which was contrary to a long-held assumption in architectural and urban-design circles that people will slow their pace as group density goes up, in order to lower the risk of a collision, which could lead to a fall and, perhaps, injury or death.
Yet it seems that, in the heat of the moment, people pay little attention to the danger of colliding with each other, and do not slow down. The responsibility therefore falls upon urban designers to work out how best to plan the construction of future tunnels, bridges and other passages that restrict the flow. The only option may well be to make them wider.
8. What does the paper concentrate on
A. How six fighting bulls appeal to so many people.
B How bull-runs cause injuries and deaths every year.
C. How six fighting bulls are released to charge through the town
D. How bull-runs affect frightened people’s minds and behaviours.
9. Why is a disaster like a fire, a flood or a terrorist attack mentioned in paragraph 2
A. People should learn how to deal with such disasters in a proper way.
B. People can behave in the same way as they do when bulls run in the city.
C. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners often consider such disasters.
D. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners sometimes ignore such disasters.
10. What is the long-held assumption when there is a dangerous situation
A. People may lose their minds in disasters.
B. People will slow down in crowded areas.
C. People tend to speed up in high-density crowds.
D. People in panicked crowds can be unaware of the collision.
11. How did Dr. Parisi and his team carry out their research
A. By observing the event and analyzing the information.
B. By using the method of reasoning and judging
C. By consulting the organizers of the bull-runs.
D. By doing experiments with some volunteers.

Japan turns to more legal measures to support child-bearing as its total fertility (生育) rate and number of births hit new record lows in 2023. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan on Wednesday reported that the total fertility rate, which is the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime, fell to 1.20, continuously dropping for the eighth year.
The number of babies born in Japan in 2023 dropped by 43,482 from the year of 2022 to 727,277, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1899. Meanwhile, the number of deaths rose by 6,886 from the year of 2022, reaching a record high of 1,575,936.
The number of marriages also fell, dropping by 30,213 from the year of 2022 to 474,717, the lowest since World War II. Late marriages and financial concerns are often regarded as reasons for the declining (下滑的) birthrate. Officials said that various factors, such as economic instability and the challenge of balancing work and childcare, jointly led to the critical situation.
To address the declining birthrate, Japan passed a law on Wednesday that expands monthly child allowances (补贴) and parental leave. Starting in the year of 2026, this new child-rearing support will be funded by higher monthly health insurance fees.
Key changes include extending child allowance coverage from age 15 to age 18 and removing the income limit for parents and guardians. Additionally, the monthly allowance for a third or subsequent child will be doubled to 30,000 yen ($192) , with these changes set to take effect in a few months. Other measures include increased benefits for parents taking childcare leave and expanded daycare services for children, regardless of their parents’ employment (就业) status.
12. How many babies were born in Japan in 2022
A. 474,717. B. 727,277. C. 770,759. D. 1,575,936.
13. What is the main topic of Paragraph 3
A. Fall of the number of marriages. B. Causes of the declining birthrate.
C. Effects of the declining birthrate. D. Challenge of balancing work and childcare.
14. How can parents who have a third child benefit from the new measures
A. They will be supplied with free milk powder. B. They will be provided with low-rent housing.
C. They will get a higher monthly allowance. D. They will get more monthly salaries
15. What is the best title for the news report
A Japan passes new law to increase birthrate

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Extinctions, where entire species are wiped out, are not unusual in our Earth’s history. In fact, over 90 percent of all species that ever lived are now extinct. In the last 500 million years, there have been five times ____36____ life on Earth has almost ended. These include the third mass extinction, ____37____ (know) as the “Great Dying” which killed 90% to 96% of all species. And the fifth event, which ____38____ (occur) 66 million years ago, caused the death of the dinosaurs. The reasons for extinctions are ____39____ (vary). According to scientists, they include volcanic eruptions, asteroids ____40____ (hit) the Earth from space, changes in sea levels, the decrease of the oxygen content of the sea and global warming. Many scientists say we are now entering the Earth’s sixth mass extinction. This time, human activity will be to blame.
Although it is not unusual for species to die out naturally, the rate ____41____ which this is now happening is cause for concern. A 2015 study by scientists who were based at Brown University and Duke University in the US, looked at how quickly species die out due to natural causes, that is, the “background extinction rate” They found that human activity is causing species to die out 1,000 times faster than normal. There is a long list of reasons why so many species are dying out: air and water pollution, forests being destroyed, factory farming and overfishing. ____42____ is clear that human activity has ____43____ (negative) affected all other species on Earth, including animals and plants.
If a sixth mass extinction occurs, scientists who have studied the issue believe that up to three quarters of all
species on Earth could die out. Of course, as we ____44____ (human) depend on so many species for our survival, we would also be at risk of dying out. Our world and our lives depend on the balance in nature between animals and plants. Without forests, we would have no air to breathe, _____45_____ without clean water we would be unable to survive.

Last Saturday, Grace and Martin, went to a restaurant to have dinner. There were lots of people in the restaurant so they had to share their table with another person, who was a girl in her twenties. When Grace and Martin were ready to return home, Grace noticed the phone. She quickly told Martin, “It must be the girl’s phone.” Martin looked at the phone which took his breath away. Then Grace saw a phone number on the plastic cover of the phone. “Why don’t we just call this number Maybe it is her family member’s. The owner must be worried. We can talk to her and ask her to come and take back her phone,” Grace was trying to persuade her brother to change his mind.

【答案】Dear editor,
I’m Li Hua a Senior Two student of our school. I’d like to share a funny story about myself that happened
last Monday. After breakfast, I went to school in such a hurry that I accidentally put on two different shoes. When I entered the classroom, my friends found that I was wearing two different shoes and couldn’t help laughing. It was embarrassing at first, but I soon realized the humor in the situation.
I felt a bit silly, but it also taught me to slow down and pay more attention to details. It’s a day I won’t forget, and it’s a great reminder to find humor in small things in our life.
Yours sincerely

【答案】After supper, Martin finished his homework and went to bed. However, that night, Martin turned over in
bed from time to time. He looked into the darkness and kept sighing, and then he covered his head with the pillow. It was difficult for him to return the new phone! Whenever he closed his eyes, the girl would appear in his mind. But how could he bear to think of the girl heartbroken for her lost phone How had he become such a boy Shame overcame him. Grace was right! The next morning, he found Grace. “I am going to phone the owner,” he told Grace, stressing each word.
“How have you changed your mind ” Grace asked. “It is a good deed to return something one has lost,” Martin replied. Grace was very happy to hear that. They phoned the girl by dialing the phone number and got through to the girl’s mother. After their telling her about the her daughter’s phone, then the girl answered the phone and expressed her gratitude repeatedly. Even on the other end of the line, Martin could felt her excitement. Then the three met at the same cafe. Seeing the girl’s broad smile, Martin never felt more relieved. He was grateful that he resisted the evil temptation and stuck to being honest.
