Here are some of London’s best parks for you to explore.
St. James’s Park
At 23 hectares (公顷), St. James’s is the second-smallest of the eight Royal Parks after The Green Park. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty, with brightly-colored flower beds, a lovely lake and a fountain. It is famous for its pelicans (鹈鹕), which were introduced to the park in 1664 as a gift from the Russian Ambassador to King Charles Ⅱ.
Hyde Park
From hunting to ice-skating, central London’s largest green space really has seen it all. Today Hyde Park is a center of activity throughout the year. If you’re with kids, visit the nearby Princess Diana Playground, where unaccompanied adults are turned away at the gate. The summer season means festivals, with a large section of the park used for open-air concerts.
Regent’s Park
As one of the largest park of central London, Regen’s Park is also one of the loveliest green spaces. Among its many attractions are London Zoo, Regent's Canal, a boating lake, and sports pitches. Performances take place here in an open-air theater during summer. To the north of Regent’s Park is Primrose Hill, a lovely spot for a relaxing walk or picnic, offering extraordinary views over the city skyline.
Hampstead Heath
With its rolling woodlands, grasslands and abundant wildlife, Hampstead Heath feels far away from the city. Swimmers head to the three bathing ponds, two of which are open year round. Hampstead Heath is home to a variety of butterflies and bird species. This is a wonderful place for a walk, especially to the top of Parliament Hill, which offers expansive views across London.
21.Which is the smallest of the eight Royal Parks
A.St. James’s Park. B.Regent’s Park.
C.The Green Park. D.Hyde Park.
22.What do Hyde Park and Regent’s Park have in common

Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of kilometers that make up the complete Appalachian Trail. Harvey, or “little man”, was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.
The Appalachian Trail, which many people call simply the “AT”, is a 3,530-kilometer hiking trail that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains and passes through 14 states in all. Hiking the Appalachian Tran is tough, and only one out of every four hikers completes all the sections of the trail. The people who hike it must carry everything they need with them, including tents, sleeping bags and other supplies, along with food and water.
Harvey’s parents, Josh and Cassie Sutton, have been hiking with Harvey since he was two years old. They made reasonable arrangements, and especially prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes. It took Harvey and his family 209 days to complete the entire AT. Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tents and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to set up camp again.
During his days on the AT, Harvey liked to use his imagination. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun while he hiked. He played games with his mom and dad and other hikers, Kart Sakas hiked with the Suttons through seven states. Mr. Sakas said Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game.
Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together. Harvey has now turned 5 and has started kindergarten. But at some point in the future, he says, “I want to hike the AT again!”
24.What can we learn about hiking on the AT
A.It takes every hiker 7 months to finish it. B.Hikers like to celebrate their birthdays on it.
C.Only a quarter of hikers finish the whole trail.D.Hikers spend lots of money hiking on it.
25.What made the Suttons’ hiking successful
A.Using their imagination. B.Being full of energy.
C.Managing time well. D.Having good preparation.
26.What kind of person is Harvey Sutton
A.Energetic and team-spirited. B.Imaginative and funny.
C.Naughty and tough. D.Considerate and brave.
27.Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A.The AT—A Challenging Trail B.Why Do People Like Hiking
C.Hiking—Suttons’ Hobby D.The Little Man’s 209 Hiking Days

It’s said that Thomas Edison found an unusual way to enjoy piano music. As someone played, the famous inventor, who had been deaf, would move close to the instrument and bite it. In his own words, it allowed him to “hear through his teeth”.
Robert Friedman, who was in the business of buying and selling pianos, recently showed off marks on a piano that was once owned by Edison. The piano had groups of small marks above the keyboard. He was surprised by the tooth marks left by the inventor of the phonograph(留声机) , a music playing device.
Edison invented the phonograph in 1877. Edison ever asked for the piano at the lowest price. When he bought the piano and put it in the lab, he was experimenting with sound recording. He owned the instrument for many years, so it was possibly used in early recordings.
There aren’t photographs of Edison biting this piano. But he was thought to bite into phonographs and pianos to help him experience music as his hearing worsened. His daughter once remembered that a guest cried on the spot at the sight of Edison biting into a piano as someone played it.
Friedman calls himself the piano hunter. He finds and buys the famous pianos from people and then sells them, usually to dealers. But this piano is more complex. He is now looking for the right home for the instrument. Friedman says that he believes that it belongs to someplace where many people can see it. Friedman does not want it to go back into private hands because of its connection to Edison. He has to find a historical group that will buy the piano, which he is offering to sell for what it cost him.
28.What was Edison’s purpose in biting the piano
A.To record his day. B.To enjoy its music.
C.To express his anger. D.To mark its importance.
29.Why did Edison buy the piano
A.To perform music. B.To decorate his lab.
C.To test the phonograph’s recording. D.To sell it at a very higher price later.
30.How did the guest feel about Edison’s behavior
A.Impressed.B.Pleased. C.Puzzled. D.Embarrassed.
31.What will Friedman do with the piano
A.Give it away. B.Make a fortune.
C.Sell it at the original price. D.Keep it somewhere for himself.

Tesla’s self-driving cars have recently come under investigation as a report on crashes raises questions about their safety. Despite Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s claim that their Autopilot capability makes their cars “extremely safer,” data suggests otherwise.
According to The Washington Post, the number of deaths and serious injuries associated with Tesla’s driver-assistance technology is higher than previously reported. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded 736 crashes since 2019, with at least 17 of them being fatal. These figures include crashes involving both Autopilot, which allows cars to drive on highways without human intervention(干预), and the newer Full Self-Driving feature, which extends automation to city streets. However, these statistics can’t record incidents that were avoided due to the cars’ safety features. Additionally, when compared to the total number of car crashes that occurred last year, the number of crashes involving driver-assistance vehicles appears relatively small, but actually it’s not.
Tesla’s safety claims lack context as Autopilot is primarily designed for highways, while most accidents occur in more complex environments with cross-traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. Moreover, Tesla’s customer base consists mainly of wealthier individuals who live in communities with lower accident rates.
Concerns are raised by Tesla’s request to the NHTSA not to reveal whether Autopilot or Full Self-Driving was in use during fatal crashes. This lack of transparency(透明) prevents a comprehensive analysis of the incidents and raises questions about responsibility.
Safety exaggerations combined with Tesla’s aggressive marketing have led to accidents caused by drivers relying too heavily on the system. Full Self-Driving does not allow the car to fully drive itself, and drivers are expected to remain attentive and ready to intervene at all times. However, Tesla’s messaging may mislead some users into believing otherwise.
While a driverless future has the potential to be safer, it is crucial not to convince the public that underdeveloped capabilities are ready for widespread use. Tesla should address past problems, ensure their automation set can detect(检测) emergency vehicles, and be transparent with the public about the limitations of their technology.
32. What can we learn about Tesla’s driver-assistance-related crashes
A.736 fatal cases of self-driving are recorded.
B.NHTSA focused on the crashes on highways.
C.The total number of car crashes is extremely small.
D.The incidents avoided are not counted in the crash statistics.
33. What can be inferred about Tesla’s safety claims
A.They are supported by comprehensive data.
B.They are based on limited driving environment.
C.They are restricted to the experiences of satisfied customers.
D.They have been proven to be accurate and reliable by NHTSA.
34. What can we know about Full Self-Driving
A.It is ill-received. B.It is well-developed.
C.It needs the driver to stay focused. D.It reduces the accidents greatly.
35. Which title best summarizes the content of this text
A.Concerns and Questions Surrounding Tesla’s “Self-Driving” Cars
B.Tesla’s Self-Driving Cars: The Safest Option of Driving on the Road
C.The Future of Self-Driving Cars: A Closer Look at Tesla’s Technology
D.Reconstruction and Revolution of Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
All living things need clean, fresh water to survive. Ninety-seven percent of the water on earth is in the ocean. The salt in the ocean water makes it unusable for drinking. Another two percent is frozen in the ice caps and glaciers on the Earth. 36 There are many factors that affect the amount of water available for you. Where you live, the amount of rain that falls, and how water is collected and reserved all affect the amount of cool, clear water available.
One factor that we can’t change is where it will rain. The amount of rain an area receives affects the amount of water available for use. Some major cities are located in areas where they can get water from the ground. 37 Those places with no water readily available must pipe water in from far away.
According to a study done by the state of California, the average person uses over one hundred gallons of water per day. Water is used for drinking, taking a shower or bath, brushing teeth, washing hands, cleaning dishes, doing laundry, and flushing toilets. 38
No matter where you live, there are many ways you can help conserve water. Today, we have many helpful tools to help us save water. There are low-flow shower heads and faucets(水龙头), dishwashers and washing machines that use up to 50% less water. 39
There are many other ways you can help. 40 Take a shower rather than a bath. It’s also important to fix leaky faucets. If you find one, let your parents know. A good way to have cool water available all the time is to keep a pitcher in the fridge. This way you won’t have to wait for the water in the pipes to bring you colder water to drink. Only run your clothes washer and dishwasher when they are full. This can save hundreds of gallons of water a year.
All of these will help to conserve water. Leaning to use it wisely will ensure that it will always be available. So, make a fuss and conserve water. It’s worth it!
A.Using water wisely is important.
B.Water is an important natural resource.
C.Don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth.
D.Other areas use surface water from lakes, rivers, or streams.
E.This leaves one percent of the water on Earth available for us to use.
F.Installing these items in your home is the first line of defense against wasting water.
G.Wherever we live, we must be careful with the polluted water we have in our part of the world.

My sister-in-law Carol said she’d already picked out a kitten for me. I agreed to go with her… just to look. I made no promise to take one home. After all, only two months had passed since I lost my beloved calico cat, Mandi. Maybe I needed to be pet-free for a while.
When we got there, three of the four kittens remained in the litter. Carol picked up one and handed it to me. The beautiful face and white fur on the right side of her nose reminded me of a clown-like mask. How could I resist Then another kitten, with an evenly balanced white face, jumped into my lap and purred.
Driving home in my British sports car proved difficult with two mischievous kittens. One clung to my left arm and shoulder, watching the fast-moving scenery outside. The other paced back and forth from my lap to the passenger’s seat, making it hard for me to shift gears. Both mewed in a loud duet(二重奏) of protest. Of course, I hadn’t brought a cage. I had not planned to take home a kitten — or two.
The clown-like-masked female earned the name Squeakette with her tiny voice squeaking about each new discovery as she explored her new home. The male, lacking only a black tie in his formal clothes, took the name Sebastian for my favorite composer, Johann Sebastian Bach.
A few weeks later, a neighbor helped me carry down my six-foot artificial Christmas tree from the attic(阁楼). I thanked him with a batch of cookies, and then set up the tree in the comer of my living room.
Sebastian and Squeakette knocked it down before I opened the box of decorations. After setting it upright, I straightened the few bent wire branches back into place. As I checked for any other damage, a quick flash of black-and-white fur passed by me. Up they went, branch by branch. The tree danced around as the two kittens took turns climbing it together. Sebastian made it to the top a moment ahead of Squeakette.

W: Great. Well, tomorrow, we’ll begin exploring the great Alaskan outdoors. At sunrise, we’ll start our hike to the top of Mt. Denali, the highest peak in North America.
M: Great. This hike was the reason I came to Alaska.
W: Perfect. I’ve done it several times with national park leaders. Unfortunately, I can’t come tomorrow as I have a conference with my team members. But I’ll arrange for another local guide from our agency to join you.

【听力材料】M: If this condition worsens, I must see a doctor. It’s starting to affect my tennis game.
W: Is your elbow hurting again, Trevor
M: My coach already found a treatment for all my body pains. Now, I’m just dealing with getting a good rest at night.

M: Well, it’s a recent issue. I started university over three years ago, but I registered for more difficult classes at the beginning of this school year — that’s when this problem began.
W: I see. Many people have trouble relaxing at the end of a busy day, but a few lifestyle changes can make a world of difference.
M: Like what
W: Limiting coffee, turning down your screens’ blue light, and not using your phone or eating an hour before bed can all help improve sleep quality.
M: Good idea. I’ve already begun limiting daily screen time. And I think my next adjustment should be drinking fewer cups of coffee — hopefully that’ll help too.
W: Great. Please, let me know how this goes.

【听力材料】
Hi, everyone. It’s nice to see you all back at school. I’m sharing my last story because it’s a challenging memory. We’re all supposed to share stories about our school break from June to August, but my story is about only one moment from those months.
To provide some background, my family heads for the coast whenever we can leave the city. We barely stop at any lakes, parks, or mountain towns along the way because we love our beach house so much. This August, we were celebrating my uncle’s retirement. My parents cooked, my sister decorated, and I looked after our youngest cousins — caring for all these little ones is my specialty.
We were enjoying a wonderful barbecue when our youngest cousin suddenly went missing. Everyone panicked (惊慌失措). Then, I noticed him struggling in the water and jumped in after him. I was able to save him eventually, but only because I reacted calmly and quickly. By telling this story, I want to let all my friends here be aware of the hidden danger of the ocean, and whenever you face an emergency, just try to stay calm and think about any possible solutions. Do not hesitate to offer help if you can.

I felt a big, warm kitty sniffing my hand, the familiar purrs vibrating through my fingertips. Seeing her brother’s bold move, Squeakette jumped after him. I put them in my lap. They rubbed their soft heads against my palm, seeking more affection. With each stroke, their body were at ease in my presence. After a while, the two kittens took turns climbing it together again.
Sensing their interest, I found a smaller Christmas tree for them. This Christmas tree was too tall for them, who were still young kittens. I was afraid that they could hurt themselves if they jumped from high places. Later, this smaller Christmas tree became their favorite toy and they jumped up and down many times a day. Seeing them play happily, I heard a voice in my heart echoing “it is right to take them home.” They are my little miracle which shows me that love knows no boundaries.
